As lead painter and art department manager for Willet Studios in Winona, Minnesota, Melissa Janda will speak about Willet's large-scale projects at the upcoming American Glass Guild Conference, being held in Mesa, Arizona, from May 22 – 24, 2025. With 30 years of experience in the field of stained glass, Janda is adept at all aspects of stained glass production, specializing in glass painting, design and restoration work. From St. Agnes Catholic Church in Key Biscayne, Florida, to St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church, Bethesda, Maryland, the results are stunning and speak for themselves. Before entering the world of stained glass, Janda received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, where she majored in drawing with a minor in illustration. Her professional experience with the craft first began in 1993 when she worked at Conrad Schmitt Studios, New Berlin, Wisconsin. Janda then went on to work at Jaeger Studios before leaving to manage her own studio, Melissa Janda Studios in Chicago, Illinois, and later Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for 10 years while she subcontracted work as a glass painter. During her time in Chicago, the artist also worked for a handful of studios, including Curran Glass Studio, Regina Art Glass, Glass Art and Decorative Studio, Two Fish Art Glass, and others. In 2008, Janda returned to Conrad Schmitt Studios before relocating to Winona, Minnesota, to manage Willet Studios' art department in 2014. In addition to decades of experience, Janda offers Willet Studios a dedicated spirit to the craft, in which she is constantly striving to learn new techniques through the participation in a multitude of workshops and classes. She has a deep appreciation for the great traditions of stained glass and explains: “I have one foot firmly planted in the rich past, with the other stepping forward into the future of contemporary innovations.” A close look at Janda's work process and unique methodology was featured in an Artist Profile for NPR. The video interview follow's Janda's process in creating a commissioned stained glass piece of art and features some of her favorite personal pieces. https://www.pbs.org/video/broad-and-high-artist-profile-melissa-janda-stained-glass

Send us a Text Message.Unsure about North Carolina's changing marijuana laws and whether you can still get into trouble? You're not alone. That's why Shoresides is analyzing police records to uncover who's still being penalized for marijuana possession and why.In May, the federal government advanced a measure that'd remove marijuana from the most restricted drugs list. But in North Carolina, the situation is more complex. Small amounts of recreational marijuana have been decriminalized for decades, making it quasi-legal to carry a half-ounce or less and pay a $200 fine. Police officers have the option to issue citations for larger quantities. Additionally, Hemp stores in North Carolina now openly sell “hemp” products containing small and legal amounts of Delta 9 THC, and there's an ongoing effort–Senate Bill 711– to legalize marijuana here for medical use.Despite the progress, marijuana enforcement remains a concern for community members, particularly in cities like Wilmington, where officers file several hundred marijuana charges per year. Public records obtained by Shoresides show that from 2016 to 2023, the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) filed over 5,000 marijuana charges, with roughly 84 percent filed as misdemeanors and the majority– 70 percent–for minor marijuana infractions like possession of more than a half ounce or paraphernalia, according to a Shoresides analysis. “In North Carolina marijuana possession is still illegal,” Lieutenant Willet Greg, a spokesperson for the department told Shoresides in an email. “Is it a priority or something we are focusing resources on? No it is not, social norms change and over time the laws enacted by the legislative branch of government typically catch up with those norms.” All of the infractions turned over to Shoresides through our public records request involved amounts of marijuana that were equal to or in excess of a half-ounce. But that doesn't mean the department has ceased penalizing people for carrying less, Willet explained. Data related to those charges aren't readily accessible. “In order to find data for anyone charged with below a half ounce of marijuana it would require our one analyst to go through every marijuana arrest within those years. That is due to the way the law is written regarding amounts of marijuana and how the data is retained within our records system,” he said. “I'm sure there are people that have been charged with that amount.”In October 2016, a 12-year-old identified in a police report as an African-American male was arrested for marijuana possession and paraphernalia at Williston Middle School. (Paraphernalia might be anything from a plastic baggie to a glass pipe.) In July 2023, a 33-year-old identified in a police report as a white female employed by John Metts Insurance, was arrested on roughly the same charges at a local hotel. Unlike many shorebirds, Willets breed inland. When nesting is done, they migrate south to both Atlantic and Pacific coastlines in the U.S. and Central and South America. What they all have in common, wherever they have bred and wherever they spend the winters, is an unmistakable voice, combining the insistent petulance of a hungry chipmunk with the lyrical rhythms of a whip-poor-will.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Dr. Walter Willett is a physician and Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He also co-chairs the EAT-Lancet Commission, a group of 37 world-leading scientists working to determine how to provide a healthy diet for a future population of 10 billion people while respecting planetary boundaries. Dr. Willet's career has centered on the development of methods to study the effects of diet on the occurrence of major diseases. His research has provided unparalleled insight into the long-term health consequences of our food choices.Walter Willett: “Look at where you are and start off working there. Ultimately at a much larger scale, you'd like to have an impact. But if you don't have control of the dials and the levers at that level, your own food service and wherever you happen to be working or studying can often be improved a lot, and you learn a lot from that experience. Episode 2414 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Nina Teicholz about the price of propaganda at Harvard, in the food industry, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/11/price-propoganda-with-nina-teicholz-episode-2414 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - The Price of Propaganda Harvard is consistently putting out incorrect studies led by Walter Willet. (2:00) Nina has done an extensive deep dive on why this is happening. The big question is, why are Harvard and Walter Willet so anti-meat? She gives a great example of why correlation is not causation. (3:45) She elaborates on her deep dive into Walter Willet. (7:15) He keeps trying to assert that the science is settled on the topic of red meat to avoid debate. (14:30) Vinnie asks Nina a pointed question—What's in it for Willet? (16:45) There are a lot of parallels between him and Ancel Keys. Nina gives more details about the research she has done for her book. (19:30) There are many conflicts of interest regarding funding; there is a price for propaganda. She has written about this topic several times and revealed such conflicts. Actual clinical trials do not support Willet's claims. He always makes hypotheses but never completes clinical trials. There are so many data points that he ignores. Follow the Money There are plenty of fake food companies that are expanding their business interests. (31:00) They are the ones creating the narrative that meat is bad for the planet so they can claim they are saving the planet. Coincidentally, the claim of cow burps affecting the climate didn't arise until after the low-carb movement became popular. (34:45) The Barilla pasta company came up with a $40 million campaign to get meat off the plate, so you could replace it with pasta. (44:50) Ruminants are essential for soil sustainability and health, so why the attack on cows? (38:30) They chat a bit more about recent funding behind Harvard; it includes a donation of $350 million. (40:00) Even the Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper, called out the $350 million donation as disingenuous. (43:00) Nina ends on a positive note that there are plenty of people who conduct N=1 experiments who find their health improving when going low-carb and eating meat. A fine woodworker has a chest full of tools, each designed for a specific task. Birds also have highly refined tools-their bills. The size and shape of a bird's bill match perfectly the food they seek and the way in which they obtain their meals. Different species of shorebirds that forage shoulder to shoulder in tidal estuaries (like this Marbled Godwit and Willet) have bills of different lengths. As a result they don't compete for the same food. More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. A son of Santa Barbara, Justin Tyler Willett began Tyler in 2005 at the age of 24 with a few barrels tucked away in the corner of the Sta. Rita Hills cellar he was working in at the time. It was there, as the assistant winemaker, he honed his approach to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Here, Justin makes wines of clarity and poise wines lead with structure and persistence; they evoke confidence, focus and vibrancy. Justin is the first to tell you that these are virtues of terroir: they are not created in the cellar, but delicately drawn forth. The unique combination of marine soils, a long mild growing season, and cool ocean influence make this a truly wonderful place for growing pinot noir and chardonnay.

In 1976 my mom and dad brought my sister Renee my brother DJ and me to this incredible mountain range called The Sawtooths. I was nine. We basically never left. A far cry from Cleveland, Ohio. Thanks, Mom and Dad. My husband Dan and I have been fortunate to raise our beautiful children Gabrielle, Gunner, and Drew here in the Wood River Valley. As they began to leave "the nest" I instinctively knew what I had to do. That was to find out Who I truly was. And so the heart and hard relationship with myself began in 2016. I began to take Mastery classes online. Self Mastery, The Conscious Creation Process, The Language of Feelings, Karma and Dharma, Spiritual Distinction Meditation, Chakra Work and science of Ayurvedic Medicine. I knew that was just the start. I completed my Yoga Certification in 2018 and have been teaching classes since. Early in 2020, a yoga practice called Kundalini found me. I began to take classes immediately through several modalities. Digging deep during the "pandemic" was beyond a blessing. I am currently in Teacher /training for level one Kundalini.
