Paranormal investigator, author, and filmmaker Jason Hewlett takes a deep dive into some of Canada's most legendary cryptids and supernatural phenomena. Jason shares the chilling childhood encounter that launched his lifelong exploration of the unknown, and we dig into the terrifying lore of the Wendigo—part cryptid, part cautionary tale—tied to Indigenous traditions. We also explore his thoughtful approach to researching these stories with cultural sensitivity and hear about the strange and unsettling moments that occurred during his recent Wendigo investigations, which will form the basis of an upcoming book and documentary. In addition to the Wendigo, Jason discusses his work on Cursed Waters, a film exploring the legend of Ogopogo, Canada's most famous lake monster, and shares details about his current Bigfoot research in British Columbia. From lake creatures to forest spirits to elusive Sasquatch sightings, Jason reflects on what these phenomena reveal about the mysterious world around us. Whether you're a believer, skeptic, or somewhere in between, this conversation is packed with insight and eerie intrigue. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today we're diving into one of Canada's most mysterious and legendary stories. This episode was recommended by one of our awesome listeners—Eileen—so a big thank-you to Eileen for sending us on this adventure.Get ready to meet a creature that has frightened and fascinated people for centuries. Some say it's a sea monster. Others say it's a spirit. But most just call it… Ogopogo. So grab your life vest, pack your flashlight, and hang on tight—we're heading to the deep, dark waters of Lake Okanagan in British Columbia.
We head to the great white north (Canada) to discover the secrets of their most famous lake monster, Ogopogo!
Live from Odds & Ends in Olympia, Washington. I tell a revamped version of my Ogopogo episode, with updated sightings and new information. The wildly talented and creative Jonah Barnett does a reading of Boggy from their book Moss Covered Claws. We wrap the whole thing up with an informal sit down Q & A with each other. Thank you to Jonah for organizing this event, to Odds & Ends for opening up their doors to the local cryptid lovers of Olympia, and Gorgeous Gorgeous girls for providing spooky tunes.
In this segment of "The Strange Reality with Dave Emmons," my guest is Mike Bass. Mike has written an entertaining book about "Frightful Folklore of North America." He tells us short stories that originate from Greenland to the Panama Canal. There are some stories that most people might remember, like the Headless Man and the Headless Nun, Sasquatch, the Goat Man of Texas, Vampires of Mexico, Chupacabra of Puerto Rico origination, The Haint Spirit of the US, and The Banshee of the Badlands. Mike gives a history of some of these Folklore Tales. He claims these stories have some truth to them throughout history. Mike tells us stories from Canada, including Ogopogo from British Columbia, Canada, and the Devil's Island Giant from Manitoba, Canada. Most stories you might have heard as a young child. We had a fun time reliving these age-old stories - campfire stories, I called them. Mike Bass started in the supernatural as a child growing up in a house with spirits. Since then, his interest in folklore expanded, and he began researching these stories. He is a printmaker, and he and his wife developed artwork using ink and pencil drawings. The book has the illustrations they drew. They make opaque palettes that work well with folkloric subjects. Together, they own The Zip Dang Shop in Madison, and Mike is the author of two Folklore books: Frightful Folklore of North America and Folklore Oracle. They drew cards of Folklore creatures for the book Folklore Oracle. Mike's book can be found on Amazon and other outlets. You can also look up The Zip Dang Shop on Google or http://www.watkinspublishing.com

Darkness Radio presents: The Legend Of Ogopogo: Canada's Loch Ness Monster with Filmmaker/Podcaster/Author, Jason Hewlett! Located in British Columbia, Lake Okanagan is over 80 miles long and is a popular destination for fishers and boaters. It has a storied and rich history, with tales told by native populations for centuries - including the legend of Ogopogo. Ogopogo is said to be an enormous serpent-like creature, which has haunted the deep waters of Lake Okanagan for centuries. Sightings both old and new, as well as a wealth of indigenous tales have led many to believe that the existence of Ogopogo is much more than just a story. As sightings continue to this day, in many ways the legend has become Canada's very own Loch Ness Monster. Author of the new book from Small Town Monsters Publishing, The Legend of Ogopogo: Canada's Loch Ness Monster, Jason Hewlett, joins Darkness Radio today to talk about the creature. Happy Friday, coven! This week takes us on a wild adventure. We have animal travel - cats being shipped and dogs flying on airplanes. Speaking of airplanes, did y'all know there are people in charge of coordinating caskets flying across the world and sometimes they mess up their job?! We delve into the true crime world, with an abduction (and thankful recovery) of a 10 month old baby, and the disappearance and murder of 3 surfers in Mexico. This week sadly also brings about another pedophile teacher and continues to reaffirm our thoughts that the safest place to be is sitting on your couch. Before things get too dark, we'll talk about some of our fave cryptids including Ogopogo, Bigfoot, and Cheeseball Man. We've got something for everyone this week, so be sure to tune in! Happy Haunting!

This week, it's two folktales - one if by land, one if by sea!First up, Felicia goes in between the pages of the classic folktale of Sleepy Hollow! From “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” - the original 1820 short story by Washington Irving featuring the famous Ichabod Crane & the Headless Horseman with his flaming jack-o'-lantern - deeper to the mythical Headless Horseman's origins and roots in Irish and Scottish folklore, as well as the English tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. And of course no conversation about Sleepy Hollow would be complete without touching on Tim Burton's 1999 film Sleepy Hollow along with Disney's 1949 animated short “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.”
Episode 2.6 Ogopogo Switching it up! This week Mike is interviewed by Doc about the mysterious and ancient lake monster, the Ogopogo! About this podcast: MONSTERS! They haunt our days and chill our dreaming nights, to paraphrase Emily Dickinson. There's not a population on earth that does not have its own unique monster stories to tell to frighten, but also to instruct on the nature of good and evil, right and wrong. But what happens when monsters get out of control, when the monstrous imagination starts to bleed over into the real world? What are the effects of monsters on real people's real lives? This podcast examines the histories and mysteries of some of our favorite monsters to unlock their secrets and expose their influence on our lives. About the hosts: Michael Chemers (MFA, PhD) is a Professor of Dramatic Literature in the Department of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. In this road trip special recorded in the forests of Jordan River, BC, Josie tells Taylor about the Militant Mothers of Raymur, who stood in front of speeding trains to make a better world for their children. Plus: a blurry glimpse of two of British Columbia's most elusive residents—the serpentine marine monsters, Cadborosaurus and Ogopogo.
We hope you enjoyed Part one of the Ogopogo and learning so much about Secwépemc "the people". In Part 2 we hear the story passed down from the elders of what the Ogopogo might be. Also, some creepy encounters of what people believe may have been the creature. Did they really encounter the Ogopogo? Some have the pictures to prove it, you decided. The Secwepemc called the creature the Naitaka, as "an evil supernatural entity with great power and ill intent." The word "n'ha-a-itk" has various translations, such as "water-demon", "water god", or "sacred creature of the water". Suwapma means “The People”. Early settlers had trouble pronouncing the word and chose to say “Shuswap” instead. The Suwapma originally had 30 bands located in BC's Southern Interior. This is our first in our new format. We will have an episode drop on Monday and then Thursday will be part 2. So sit back and enjoy the show. Remember we are pausing the patreon and the merch store. On this installment of Expanded Perspectives, the guys start the show off talking about Halloween, Cam's recent deer hunt and more. Then, a listener writes into the show with a lifelong experience with ghosts or Shadow Beings. For their entire life, this person and several of their family members have seen over time, these strange Shadow Beings. What are they? What do they want? And, why are they following the same family from home to home? After the break, Cam brings up some truly bizarre sightings that have occurred in our brother to the north Canada. From strange sightings of Devil Monkeys, which are large baboon-like primates to water cryptids like Ogopogo. Ogopogo is a cryptid lake monsterreported to live in Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. In 1926 a sighting is claimed to have occurred at an Okanagan Mission beach. Then, the Tunnel Monster of Cabbagetown, Ontario. One summer's day in 1978 in an area of the city known as Cabbagetown. A man named Ernest stumbled upon a secret entrance to the tunnels while searching for a lost kitten. Certain he had heard distressed mewling down in the alley beside his Parliament Street apartment the night before, he decided to army-crawl into the culvert about ten feet, flashlight in hand. The tunnel gradually widened, its black depths like an abyss. Something skittered ahead and he steadied the flashlight beam, hoping to see his kitten. But it was no cat caught in the beam. A pair of slanted red eyes bulged at him above the gaping, large-toothed mouth of a hairy, grey, bi-pedaled creature about three feet long.
