Ep 560 Courtney Taylor Taylor of the Dandy Warhols on ROCK REMAKER, song writing, life and ladybugs!

The Dandy Warhols formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994, born from the city's gritty alternative scene. Fronted by the charismatic and sardonic Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the band initially carved out a niche with a sound that merged psychedelic rock, shoegaze textures, and garage grit. Their name, a clever play on pop artist Andy Warhol, reflected their art-house attitude and offbeat sensibility right from the start. The band's 1995 debut Dandys Rule OK was released on the indie label Tim/Kerr Records and earned them a deal with Capitol Records. It wasn't until their third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000), that they broke through internationally—led by the iconic single “Bohemian Like You.” The song's catchy riff and slacker spirit captured a moment, helped along by a high-profile feature in a Vodafone ad, which made it an anthem of early-2000s alt culture.Known as much for their aesthetic and attitude as their music, The Dandy Warhols often played with the line between satire and sincerity. Their early 2000s feud/friendship with Brian Jonestown Massacre—documented in the acclaimed film Dig!—added to their mythos, painting them as the more commercially savvy counterparts in a tale of two brilliant but volatile bands.Despite ups and downs with labels and shifting public tastes, the Dandys have remained prolific. Their sound evolved over time, incorporating synth-pop, glam, and even industrial influences, while keeping that core fuzzed-out irreverence intact. Albums like Welcome to the Monkey House (2003) and Distortland (2016) showed their willingness to shift gears while poking fun at pop culture and themselves.Still active today, The Dandy Warhols continue to tour and release new material, including 2024's “Rockmaker”—a return to heavy grooves and wry commentary. Whether you're revisiting their hits or diving into deeper cuts, the Dandys remain a band that defies easy categorization, staying true to their motto: “It's not about being famous, it's about being cool.”Official Links:

fWotD Episode 2533: Kurt Vonnegut Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 11 April 2024 is Kurt Vonnegut.Kurt Vonnegut ( VON-ə-gət; November 11, 1922 – April 11, 2007) was an American writer and humorist known for his satirical and darkly humorous novels. In a career spanning over 50 years, he published 14 novels, three short-story collections, five plays, and five nonfiction works; further collections have been published after his death.Born and raised in Indianapolis, Vonnegut attended Cornell University, but withdrew in January 1943 and enlisted in the U. S. Army. As part of his training, he studied mechanical engineering at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and the University of Tennessee. He was then deployed to Europe to fight in World War II and was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. He was interned in Dresden, where he survived the Allied bombing of the city in a meat locker of the slaughterhouse where he was imprisoned. After the war, he married Jane Marie Cox. He and his wife both attended the University of Chicago while he worked as a night reporter for the City News Bureau.Vonnegut published his first novel, Player Piano, in 1952. It received positive reviews but was not commercially successful at the time. In the nearly 20 years that followed, he published several novels that were well regarded, including two—The Sirens of Titan (1959) and Cat's Cradle (1963)—that were nominated for the Hugo Award for best science fiction or fantasy novel of the year. He published a short-story collection, Welcome to the Monkey House, in 1968. Vonnegut's breakthrough was his commercially and critically successful sixth novel, Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). Its anti-war sentiment resonated with its readers amidst the ongoing Vietnam War, and its reviews were generally positive. It rose to the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and made Vonnegut famous. Later in his career, Vonnegut published autobiographical essays and short-story collections such as Fates Worse Than Death (1991) and A Man Without a Country (2005). Since his death, he has been hailed for his dark humor commentary on American society. His son Mark published a compilation of his unpublished works, Armageddon in Retrospect, in 2008. In 2017, Seven Stories Press published Complete Stories, a collection of Vonnegut's short fiction. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:55 UTC on Thursday, 11 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Kurt Vonnegut on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.

Along with special guest Longinus, the boys drink and review Sam Adams' Just the Haze, a no-alcohol IPA, then review some short stories by Kurt Vonnegut. "The Foster Portfolio" has an investment advisor who finds a client who appears to be poor, but secretly has enormous wealth, which he has no interest in. It examines one man's struggles with his moral failings. "All the King's Horses" is about a horrifying chess game played with real people's lives, including a Colonel's wife and two sons. It's a parable about parents' choices in sending their children off to war. "Tom Edison's Shaggy Dog" is clever and fun story about a dog who is smarter than Thomas Edison. "Welcome to the Monkey House" is a futuristic story about an over-populated planet where society takes extreme measures to reduce the number of people. But then Billy the Poet comes along and throws a wrench in the works. "Harrison Bergeron" is a brilliant anticipation of modern nonsense about "equity." The only way to make everyone equal is to make the smart people stupid, the pretty people ugly, and the talented just as dull as everyone else.

Bill Reichenbach grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Takoma Park, Maryland where he studied trombone with Gene Brusiloff and Robert Isele. After high school, Bill was accepted to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. There, he studied with the great Emory Remington.

She's had an amazing and eclectic musical journey, that's seen her both live and perform globally.  She's performed with some of the world's top artists (Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Sting and JohnnyHallyday, to name but a few), had a number-one dance hit in America and has been in a major West End musical.  She's currently collaborating mostly with her husband, Paul Caplin, producing music that's been drawn from a wide variety of influences, such as reggae, dancehall, soul and jazz. Paul himself is no stranger to the musical limelight either.  Caplin began his musical career in his early twenties in the New Romantic group ‘Animal Magnet', and co-wrote their dance track, "Welcome to the Monkey House" in 1981.  He left Animal Magnet to become the “mastermind” behind the 1980's avant-garde pop project Haysi Fantayzee.  The group disbanded after releasing an album that went gold and three hit singles.  He then launched his own record label, “The Love Organization”,  going on to have success with the artist, Marilyn, with whom he also co-wrote his hit songs.

It is truly unbelievable that this story was written in 1909 - E. M. Forster's dystopian world feels all too real in our increasingly digitally connected and physically isolated real world. The story is about ritual & superstition, resistance to change, the dangers of reliance on an all-powerful authority, the origins of knowledge and creativity, and a tumultuous relationship between a mother and son who see the world in very different ways. We're joined to talk about the story by actor and writer Kiran Subramaniam, who also joined us to record our full cast, unabridged audiobook of this story! No spoilers here as usual, but we do highly recommend listening to the story as well, whether before or after the analysis & review. It's an incredible story and isn't too long - the audiobook episode is just over an hour. You should see that free audiobook available as our episode 19.  As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar books if you are looking for more great books to read. This week we recommend 1984 by George Orwell, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut, and Foundation by Isaac Asimov.Or you can watch the show on YouTube here if you prefer video.Happy reading y'all!

GHIT 0347:  Jeremy Hall from Monkey House Racing Over the past few years, we had met Jeremy at many events, but it was more in passing.  Jeremy usually races with his team called Monkey House Racing, but for the Pittsburgh event he was racing with the Skunk Oil Racing team and our team in a 1999 BMW 3 series, an E36 for all the cool dudes.  Unfortunately, the event did not go well with two incidents, one Saturday and another Sunday, both at turn 2 of PittRace.  Jeremy was driving for the second event and the car may not be repairable.  During the episode, we talk about the event, make several blatant attempts to draft Jeremy and his team onto ours.  We think he is weakening.  This episode was recorded several weeks ago just after our PittRace endurance race with the 24 Hours of Lemons series. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/TheJeremyHall If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. Today, he has left that environment, is fully LGBTQ2S+ affirming, and now leads a "love directed learning community" called The Banquet in Brantford, Ontario - but on his path to get there he encountered church abuse and religious trauma, not just to the evangelical communities he was a part of, but to himself and his family as well. It is tempting to dismiss T.S. Eliot's musings on class, society, and education as the complaints of a cranky reactionary. But the great Anglo-American poet is worth reckoning with - if for no other reason than how profoundly he challenges the democratic norms that in the 21st century we simply assume as first principles. Jonathan and Ryan take a look at Eliot's chapter on education from his book Notes Towards the Definition of Culture, and they try to square Eliot with the egalitarian promises of the American Dream.T.S. How exactly do we define terrible books?  Is there a statute of limitations on being offensive? Can we enjoy a book at the same time that we recognize its failures?  Do people and ideas ever evolve beyond books?  And what does it mean to have the freedom to choose what to read? Her numbers are often interactive and nostalgic, referencing the beloved (Golden Girls, Mad Madam Mim, Wayne's World) to the slightly horrific and bizarre (Silence of the Lambs, Lotso Huggin' Bear, Tammy Faye Bakker, Young Frankenstein). Katniss won 1st place and Audience Favorite in Green Mountain Cabaret's 2018 Newcomers Show and 1st place at Lady Luck Burlesque's 2019 amateur showcase.
