In this complete military history of Britain's pacification of the Arab revolt in Palestine, Britain's Pacification of Palestine (Cambridge UP, 2019), Matthew Hughes shows how the British Army was so devastatingly effective against colonial rebellion. The Army had a long tradition of pacification to draw upon to support operations, underpinned by the creation of an emergency colonial state in Palestine. After conquering Palestine in 1917, the British established a civil Government that ruled by proclamation and, without any local legislature, the colonial authorities codified in law norms of collective punishment that the Army used in 1936. The Army used 'lawfare', emergency legislation enabled by the colonial state, to grind out the rebellion. Soldiers with support from the RAF launched kinetic operations to search and destroy rebel bands, alongside which the villagers on whom the rebels depended were subjected to curfews, fines, detention, punitive searches, demolitions and reprisals. Rebels were disorganised and unable to withstand the power of such pacification measures. Learn more about your ad choices. In a far-future world of wizards and walled cities, Lieve Reder has risen from being a small chandler's daughter to become the captain of a riverboat owned by House Bernaglio in the oligarch-run city of Exley. She has ambitions to rise higher and when her employer, the widow Philaria Bernaglio, asks her to travel to the remote desert town of Ur Nazim to retrieve a mysterious item her dead husband, Nulf Bernaglio ordered, she signs on to the quest.Accompanied by Dai, an artificial human created by one of the mad thaumaturges of Olliphract to be part of the wizards' deadly war games, she sets out on the perilous journey. But the object she is sent to collect turns out to be one of the abandoned, semi-sentient tools the demiurge used to create the cosmos in which she lives. It's the kind of entity that can become a god. And other forces seek to possess it for their own purposes. One challenge leads to another, leading Reder to embark on an even more dangerous quest, to the far northern rim of the world where she must awaken a powerful godlet that just wants to be left to dream in peace.Along the way, she must contend with the assassins' guild, secret agents of the Duke of Vanderoy, corruptible officials, a pair of quarreling, elderly wizard brothers, an ensorcelled flying reptile, ogres, cannibal weremen, and a surprise visitor who has the power to upend all of Phenomenality.Through it all, Reder keeps her eyes on the prize: to move up in the world and make her own destiny.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Video has become a commonplace and indispensable tool for small business owners. My often repeated adage that ‘people buy from people' is exemplified perfectly by the amazing engagement and communities we see grow around brands and founders when they share the realities of their business, whether that's through behind-the-scenes videos or product showcases. We're all familiar with the various forms of social media short-form content such as TikTok skits and Instagram Reels, but it seems that not many of us have dipped our toes into, and reaped the benefits, of producing longer-form content. So, in episode 169 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I speak to the “King Of Video” Matthew Hughes, who helps small business owners and entrepreneurs strategically launch and grow their YouTube channels. In this podcast, we discuss the power of playlists, repurposing content from long-form productions and putting your USP first. We also talk about the importance of being committed to consistent content creation and how leveraging people's curiosity is key to attracting customers. Praise for The Emir's Falcon “One peregrine falcon raised in a breeding facility, to be released into the wilds of northern Alberta. Three older teens from different cultures, their lives already mapped out by parental expectations. An impulsive action by one places that falcon at the crux of a potential international incident and brings all to the brink of catastrophe in the wilderness. A fascinating and insightful read.” - Alison Lohans, author of Timefall, Don't Think Twice, and twenty-eight other books for young people and adults “The Emir's Falcon is a rich story that soars with action, drama and detail. It raises important issues of cultural and environmental conflict and still entertains and surprises right to the last sentence.” - Arthur Slade, author of Dust, winner of the Governor General's Award http://matthewhughes.org Gayle M. Smith, author of Thickwood, grew up on a mixed subsistence farm in central Alberta where, as a young child, she developed a love for animals, especially horses, and a love for reading and writing illustrated stories. In 1989, Gayle married a Saskatchewan farmer and settled into rural life to raise three children, numerous crops, purebred and commercial cattle, and horses. In 2011, Gayle was accepted into the 2011 Saskatchewan Writers' Guild Mentorship program, where she wrote the first draft of Thickwood, which then became her master's thesis in 2015, when she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Master of Fine Arts in Writing.Yearly wilderness pack trips in Northern Saskatchewan with her horses inspire her writing. She also rides in the mountains, competes in numerous equestrian events, and owns and operates a horse boarding facility. Gayle's love of the environment, history, and adventure shines in her writing. She daily interacts with her beloved partner, her family, her horses, and her rural home, while contemplating and exploring through her writing the struggle and dilemma of being human. About the book Raised on a ranch in Saskatchewan's rugged Thickwood Hills, where the prairie transitions to forest, Willomena Swift, home from playing for the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, finds a precious foal killed by a rogue stallion. The stallion's owner, once Willo's baseball coach, now chairs the committee heading up the new cooperative pasture—a pasture that is set to swallow her family lease, where she grew up, learned to love and understand horses, and dreamed of returning to raise them. Facing numerous challenges with both the stallion and his owner, Willo remembers her past years playing professional baseball as she struggles to realize her dreams in the present. Amid romance and tragedy, Willo must find a way to stand on her own and assert her rightful place in her beloved Thickwood.
