Following the program on this topic two weeks ago, Rob Hattam and Marie Brennan discuss how Australia's policy regime silences the voices of teachers who are treated as mere technicians who should just carry out instructions. In this regime teachers are treated as stupid, requiring dumbed down instruction about what to do in classrooms.Rob and Marie offer an alternative way, based on good social science, rather than the pseudo science spouted by our leaders. Based on his extensive research about 'what works' in teaching, Rob says that social science refuses universal truth claims (or 'laws' that work in every case), instead paying attention to context, and documenting and exploring what works in a particular place.Rob and Marie discuss how a good social science approach would involve teachers and students as researchers, in their teaching-learning contexts. Both have worked with teachers as researchers, and this has been essential to finding new ways to address challenges for schools and students.Finally, Rob talks about his project work supporting teachers as researchers to build new knowledge, particularly to build culturally responsive curriculum and teaching practice.

She is joined by Professor Rob Hattam from Adelaide University, who talks about the ways that government policy has been impeding the ability of schools and teachers to carry out good education for several decades.Rob Hattam argues that we've been infected by a 'GERM', a Global Education Reform Movement. As communities across Clare prepare to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, there are plenty of family-friendly events taking place across the county. In Sixmilebridge, final preparations are underway for the annual Sixmilebridge St Patrick's Day Parade, which gets underway from Mount Ievers at 12:45 on the day with this year's theme “Big Dreams, Bright Futures.” In Fanore, the finishing touches are being added to their St Patrick's Day celebrations which kick off on the 15th of March at 2pm for Fanore Beach, there are lots of exciting events to look forward to like DJ John Carey with live music and possibly a circus surprise. Meanwhile, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park will be hosting a special Shamrocks and Shenanigans celebration this Sunday, featuring traditional music, Irish dancing, family entertainment and even a chance to meet St Patrick himself. There's growing debate about the future of asteroid mining, as technology keeps making new advancements. These new developments have prompted concerns about how this process can be regulated, as it looks more likely asteroid mining will take off by the end of the decade. Waikato University Senior Lecturer in Law Anna-Marie Brennan says there's plenty to be mined from asteroids - and it will likely reduce the environmental impacts on Earth. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park will mark the start of spring with its annual Imbolc Celebration on Sunday, February 1st, from 11am to 5pm. The family-friendly event celebrates Celtic tradition and St Brigid, with seasonal crafts, storytelling, live music and a chance to meet a range of native Irish animals, including Bunratty's resident Irish Wolfhounds. An inquiry into the disappearance of Tom Phillips and his children will analyse if New Zealand met its obligations under international law. The four year search for the group ended in a shootout last September, where Phillips severely injured a police officer before being shot dead. An inquiry into their disappearance will begin hearing evidence today, looking at whether agencies should have done more or acted faster to protect the children. Waikato University Senior Law Lecturer Anna-Marie Brennan told Andrew Dickens New Zealand has obligations to protect children under UN conventions. I spoke  to iconic Irish artist and songwriter Perry Blake who released his latest album called "Death Of A Society Girl" on Moochin' About Records. This album features  Paul McGann, best known for his roles in BBC's "Doctor Who'", "Withnail & I'"  "Empire of the Sun'", '"Alien 3'" and "Queen of the Damned ."This album also marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. It's also his first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise' (5 Stars MOJO). Hailing from Sligo county, Perry Blake has been dubbed one of music's great untapped resources. Polydor UK released his debut album ‘Perry Blake' in 1998 (with three singles chosen as 'Singles of the Week' on Jo Wiley BBC Radio 1). After which he moved to France. He achieved cult status there and across Europe, releasing a string of critically-acclaimed studio albums, a live album recorded at Cirque Royal Brussels with a full orchestra, as well as the soundtracks for ‘Presque Rien' and 'Trois Petites Filles'.The "Death of a Society Girl'" album was co-written and co-produced with long-term collaborator Graham Murphy (Clannad, Sharon Shannon, Marie Brennan). Irish singer-songwriter Perry Blake, who largely came to fame in France and flourished with a career that brought opportunity throughout Europe, presents his new album 'Death of a Society Girl', released via Moochin' About Records with nine compositions on offer, including the focus track 'Let's Fall In Love'. His first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise' (5 Stars MOJO), this album also marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. Very much of the here and now, this album also offers traces of Perry's previous heady work - not dissimilar to his French Top-40 eponymous debut album - finding Perry at the height of his powers. Earlier, Blake released the epic title track 'Death of a Society Girl' featuring British actor Paul McGann, known worldwide for his roles in BBC's 'Doctor Who', 'Withnail & I', 'Empire of the Sun', 'Alien 3' and 'Queen of the Damned'. He also teased the light-filled cinematic single 'Concertina' shortly before the album's release. Co-written and co-produced with long-term collaborator Graham Murphy (Clannad, Sharon Shannon, Marie Brennan), this album features Blake's hallmark surrealist lyrics and original artwork by Syrian-born artist Helen Abbas.
