I spoke to iconic Irish artist and songwriter Perry Blake who released his latest album called "Death Of A Society Girl" on Moochin' About Records. This album features Paul McGann, best known for his roles in BBC's "Doctor Who'", "Withnail & I'" "Empire of the Sun'", '"Alien 3'" and "Queen of the Damned ."This album also marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. It's also his first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise' (5 Stars MOJO). Hailing from Sligo county, Perry Blake has been dubbed one of music's great untapped resources. Polydor UK released his debut album ‘Perry Blake' in 1998 (with three singles chosen as 'Singles of the Week' on Jo Wiley BBC Radio 1). After which he moved to France. He achieved cult status there and across Europe, releasing a string of critically-acclaimed studio albums, a live album recorded at Cirque Royal Brussels with a full orchestra, as well as the soundtracks for ‘Presque Rien' and 'Trois Petites Filles'.The "Death of a Society Girl'" album was co-written and co-produced with long-term collaborator Graham Murphy (Clannad, Sharon Shannon, Marie Brennan). These nine compositions feature Blake's hallmark surrealist lyrics and original artwork by Syrian-born artist Helen Abbas.https://moochinaboutltd.bandcamp.com/...https://moochinabout.com/perry-blake/To Watch The Rest Of The Interviews- Go Herehttps://www.youtube.com/@DJNocturna

In this episode of "Concerts That Made Us," Brian interviews the enigmatic and talented musician Perry Blake about his recent album "Death of a Society Girl" and his extensive, multifaceted career. Perry delves into the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on his music, detailing how the isolation and global uncertainty influenced his songwriting and recording process. He also highlights his fruitful collaboration with renowned producer Graham Murphy, known for his work with Clannad, Sharon Shannon, and Marie Brennan, shedding light on the creative synergy that propelled the album's unique sound.Perry reminisces about his time working with the late, legendary French singer Francoise Hardy, sharing intimate stories and the invaluable lessons he learned from her. He recounts anecdotes from memorable gigs, including a euphoric festival performance in Spain that left an indelible mark on his career, contrasted with a disastrous show in London where technical difficulties and unforeseen mishaps tested his resilience and professionalism. In discussing his pre-show routines, Perry reveals the rituals and practices that help him center himself before stepping onto the stage, emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional preparation. He passionately talks about the significance of staying true to his artistic vision, resisting industry pressures to conform, and maintaining authenticity in his work.Looking ahead, Perry shares his future plans, which include not only continuing to create music but also venturing into the world of screenwriting. He expresses excitement about exploring new storytelling mediums and the potential for cross-disciplinary projects. This episode offers a deep dive into Perry's creative process, his experiences in the music industry, and his unwavering commitment to his craft, providing listeners with a rich and inspiring narrative of an artist dedicated to his art.Find Perry Blake here: https://moochinabout.com/perry-blake/Find CTMU here:https://www.concertsthatmadeus.com/Newsletter: https://concertsthatmadeus.aweb.page/p/f065707b-2e34-4268-8e73-94f12bd2e938Save 10% on Band Builder Academy membership by following this link https://bandbuilderacademy.com/Brian_Concerts/join and using promo code "concerts" at signup Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/concerts-that-made-us. Irish singer-songwriter Perry Blake, who largely came to fame in France and flourished with a career that brought opportunity throughout Europe, presents his new album 'Death of a Society Girl', released via Moochin' About Records with nine compositions on offer, including the focus track 'Let's Fall In Love'. His first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise' (5 Stars MOJO), this album also marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. Very much of the here and now, this album also offers traces of Perry's previous heady work - not dissimilar to his French Top-40 eponymous debut album - finding Perry at the height of his powers. Earlier, Blake released the epic title track 'Death of a Society Girl' featuring British actor Paul McGann, known worldwide for his roles in BBC's 'Doctor Who', 'Withnail & I', 'Empire of the Sun', 'Alien 3' and 'Queen of the Damned'. He also teased the light-filled cinematic single 'Concertina' shortly before the album's release. Co-written and co-produced with long-term collaborator Graham Murphy (Clannad, Sharon Shannon, Marie Brennan), this album features Blake's hallmark surrealist lyrics and original artwork by Syrian-born artist Helen Abbas. Known for his delicate, downtempo and beautifully melancholic output and uniquely soothing timbre, he is well known as a collaborator of Françoise Hardy, who sang on 'War in France' (from his album 'Still Life'). He also contributed lyrics for her platinum-selling album 'Tant de belles choses', having co-written, mixed and produced two songs ('Moments' and 'So Many Things') on this record, together with Marco Sabiuhe. Blake would later release his own version of the latter track. Hailing from Sligo county, Perry Blake has been dubbed one of music's great untapped resources. Polydor UK released his debut album ‘Perry Blake' in 1998 (with three 'Singles of the Week' on Jo Wiley BBC Radio 1), after which he moved to France. He achieved cult status there and across Europe, releasing a string of critically-acclaimed studio albums, a live album recorded at Cirque Royal Brussels with a full orchestra, as well as the soundtracks for ‘Presque Rien' and 'Trois Petites Filles'. #Music #Interview #ContentCreation

This audio was recorded by Annie McLouglin from Solidarity Breakfast.7:35 - Marie Brennan has been Professor at several universities and has researched and written about the dire changes in our university system since the 90s. In this interview with Jennifer Borrell for Think Again, Marie outlines the moves to a more commercialised, top-down management model, in which academic staff have less say, and many have become demoralised and burnt out. This is a gender equity issue, as many of the casual staff left carrying the load are women.8:00 - Shannon Meilak is one of the lead campaigners for the No 3rd Tulla Runway. Marie Brennan and Lew Zipin talk about their research and action-research projects with schools and universities. They present a direction for education that is intertwined with commmunities - with students researching issues that matter to them, while drawing from a range of sources and 'knowledges', and forming relevant relationships in the process. This is contrasted with the current top-down, command-and-control approach of our schools and universities, within a Neoliberal, corporatised model. Certainly, Marie and Lew's approach is much better suited to meet the many challenges facing us, such as economic disadvantage, global warming, and the effects of colonisation. So you've got lore galore, complex sociopolitical tangles, and a history that reaches back through the ages. How do you show that on the page without infodumping? Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms, who together make up M. A. Carrick, help us explore building a world with deep historical roots while communicating that history in a way that feels natural and exciting for a reader. How do your characters think of their world's history? What different perspectives are there on historical events, and how have those perspectives shaped the present? Transcript for Episode 66 (with thanks to our scribes!) Our Guests: Alyc Helms prefers tea over all other beverages. They sometimes refer to their work as “critical theory fanfic,” which is a fancy way to say that they are obsessed with liminality, gender identity, and foxes (and tea!). They are the author of the Adventures of Mr. Mystic novels from Angry Robot and, as M.A. Carrick, the co-author (with Marie Brennan) of The Mask of Mirrors, first in the Rook & Rose trilogy from Orbit Books. Marie Brennan is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for inspiration. She recently misapplied her professors' hard work to The Night Parade of 100 Demons and the short novel Driftwood. She is the author of the Hugo Award-nominated Victorian adventure series The Memoirs of Lady Trent along with several other series, over sixty short stories, and the New Worlds series of worldbuilding guides; as half of M.A. Carrick, she has written The Mask of Mirrors, first in the epic Rook and Rose trilogy.

Travis interviews authors Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms about their latest book from Orbit Books, The Mask of Mirrors. Marie and Alyc are writing the Rook & Rose trilogy under the joint name M.A. Carrick, and their masterful worldbuilding shines through in this story of con artists, nobles, and vigilantes. The discussion takes a deep dive into worldbuilding, touches on tabletop games that spiral out of control, and just might feature some truly terrible accents. Marie Brennan joins us again, this time for a discussion about writing combat. She's studied fencing, combat choreography, and is *this close* to having a black belt in shotokan karate, bringing a valuable perspective to the discussion. Also, she's written an ebook called Writing Fight Scenes, so she knows how to talk about this stuff. We discuss some of our favorite fight scenes in movies and in books, why they work well, and how we can go about creating those sorts of things ourselves. That Scene We Couldn't Stop Gushing About: Here's a no-Netflix-membership-required version of the Daredevil fight scene. It's a teaser from Netflix, but it's unabridged. For context, Daredevil is looking for a kidnapped child, and has tracked the boy's captors to this hallway.
Marie Brennan joins us again, this time to help us field your questions about middles. Here are the questions we collected from the various social media feeds: How do you maintain interest without having something explode every other chapter? In short fiction, how do you prevent try-fail cycles from bloating the story? How do you prevent the introduction of POVs during the middle of the story from being jarring? How do you keep subplots from turning into side quests? In longer stories, how important are "breather" chapters that ease the tension? Do you have methods for weaving plot and subplot threads together? Do you outline this, or keep it in your head? Fifty-Cent Word: Proprioception, which serves as an excellent metaphor for what expertise with a set of tools feels like. Thank you, Marie, for simplifying the whole "the tool should be an extension of your hand" thing.
Marie Brennan joins us for a discussion of polytheism (and really any belief system) in our fiction.
