At last, The High Republic -- The Nameless Terror #1 (of 4) is in comic shops. Was it worth the wait?Yes, very much so.Will it be difficult to wait almost two months until issue #2 is released?Yes, if #1 is anything to go by, since George Mann, Eduardo Mello, Ornella Savarese, Studio RAM, Matt Dryer, Sanjay Dharawat, Stephen Reichert and Samantha Hummer have delivered a crackling debut issue that ties into The High Republic mythology with ease while creating an aura of suspense. In Yoda #4 (of 10), writer Jody Houser returns to the galaxy a long time ago, reteaming with artist Luke Ross for a three-issue arc that features Yoda in a story set before the Prequel Trilogy and featuring Jedi Master Dooku. THey're joined by color artist Nolan Woodard and letter Joe Caramagna of Virtual Caligraphy. It's a well-paced start that gives us more elements of the Count before his faith in the Jedi was lost and features a trio of young Padawans -- a togorian, wookiee and trandoshan -- that echoes Dooku's own relationship with SIfo-Dyas. Astute readers will recognize a key event in this issue from the pages of Age of Republic: Count Dooku #1. That issue has more emotional heft now. Finally, in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #29, Aphra finds herself in an unusual spot: Completely oblvious to the Spark's dire plans. The story by Alyssa Wong, artist Natacha Bustos, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg and letter Joe Caramagna, blends long-ago history with the effort by Chelli's friends to come to her rescue in a brisk story. Shawn welcomes back his good friend, Jim Mello, as they tackle an interesting question: is it possible to become addicted to religion? And what would that even mean? Along the way we also discuss black-and-white thinking, the stages of faith, and what all this has to do with mission and discipleship.
Let’s go to the beach and watch for sharks – this is episode 37 of Encyclopodia. It’s Jaws! Summary: Monster shark eats people from an island community and is generally not very nice so the tired police chief has to recruit some friends and try to stop it but it is very big and mean … Continue reading "Jaws (1975 film) with Jim Mello"

Plenty of discussion about not just Star Wars #60, but A Star Wars Comic #18, too. Fresh of the heels of being deemed too obscure for the Star Wars Celebration podcast stage (Q: Who reads Star Wars comics anyway?A: About 200,000 do, every month.), we're looking at last week's Star Wars comics this week, including a rather stirring start of a new story arc in Doctor Aphra #26 and a thoroughly entertaining chapter of "Fortress Vader" in Darth Vader #23 that deftly blends subtle humor with a deeper lesson on the notion of maintaining balance in the force. There's also news and views, given Marvel's decision to scupper -- not cancel -- Chuck Wendig's Star Wars: Shadow of Vader five-issue mini series; A Star Wars Comic's decision to postpone its November release until December; the passing of Stan Lee and John Tyler Christopher's Yavin Princess Leia action-figure variant cover for Star Wars #58.This week's Star Wars comics include:Solo: A Star Wars Story #2Star Wars #57Stay in touch and up to date by following us on Twitter and Facebook.Like what you hear? The adventures of Black Squadron concludes its run in the pages of Star Wars: Poe Dameron #31 in an inspiring, almost poetic manner, while the mysteries of the force prove to much to ignore as a former employer comes calling in Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #24.In A Star Wars Comic #17, Jim Mello and Alex Ray proffer a compelling story of duty, honor and sacrifice, but ask if it's forced, and note embraced, is it the same? This week's Star Wars comics include:Star Wars #55 (The concluding episode to the "Hope Dies" arc)Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle #1Stay in touch and up to date by following us on Twitter and Facebook.Like what you hear? We're so deep in smit with Doctor Aphra right now it's not even funny. The latest issue, #22, found Jeff and Matt enjoying the rollicking tale, despite the awkwardness of having not one but two lovers show up! The same with Lando: Double or Nothing #3, which is proving to be a worthwhile addition to Lando's long history and is required reading.Did we mention that the latest A Star Wars Comic hit us in the feels? Listen to find out why as we discuss Jim Mello and Alex Ray's latest creation and wonder aloud why these two aren't writing and drawing Star Wars comics for Marvel or IDW. (Seriously, c'mon. Give 'em a book. Now.)We also dive deep into the Star Wars comics news at SDCC.This week's Star Wars comics include:The Last Jedi adaptation #5Star Wars #52Stay in touch and up to date by following us on Twitter and Facebook.Like what you hear? It’s an extra-special special episode as we sit down with Alex Ray and Jim Mello, co-creators of the wildly popular and strikingly imaginative A Star Wars Comic as we mark the completion of a year’s worth of stories and tales from a galaxy far, far away in our respective head canon. They’ve taken us — and you — from one end of the Star Wars galaxy to another, introducing new characters alongside with old favorites. In short, it’s been a wild ride and while we knew it’s time would come to an end with the final six-page issue on Dec. 27.Except for one thing: WE WERE WRONG! Listen to find out why!
Plenty to be thankful for when it came to Marvel's November slate of Star Wars comics, including a pair of double-dips for the Star Wars and Darth Vader series. Reading Poe Damerongave us all kinds of feels, especially if you harbor affection for not just Leia Organa, but Padme Amidala.Meanwhile, Alex Ray and Jim Mello struck gold with their latest issue of A Star Wars Comic where a Gonk droid serves as the focal point of a certain view from A New Hope. It's a shame the series is drawing to a close, but we've got high hopes they'll find a way to keep it going.Star Wars comics reviewed this month, include:Star Wars #38 and #39Doctor Aphra #14Darth Vader #7 and #8Poe Dameron #21A Star Wars Comic #11Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic — Mace Windu #4Looking ahead through December, we’ll be reading several issues, too. Shawn sits down with his good friend Jim Mello to discuss the importance of safe communities, emotional intelligence, and his faith journey - which has had many twists and turns. We discuss Jim's experience with church and being drawn into our missional community.
April proved a pivotal month for Star Wars comics. From the first issue of Marvel's Rogue One adaptation, which provided some context and details not seen in the film, to the conclusion of story arcs in Star Wars 30 and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra 6, along with the passing of a beloved member of the Resistance's Black Squadron in Star Wars: Poe Dameron 13, there was plenty of pathos and high adventure to be had.Co-hosts Matt Moore and Jeff McGee were suitably impressed with Star Wars: Darth Maul 3, which continued to build nuanced layer after nuanced layer on a Zabrak who began life seemingly as a throwaway character, but has grown to become one of the Star Wars Saga's most enduring and utterly complex characters. And there's the fourth installment of A Star Wars Comic, the monthly six-page tale by Jim Mello and Alex Ray that continues to attract with thoughtfully written and artfully composed stories. Also featured on this month's episode? The debut of the new Facebook page (hello, 2012!), reminiscing about Star Wars Celebration Orlando (no wrist bands needed for that portion of the show) and Jeff's short chat with the director of the Starlight Foundation, a charity that works to bring
We're two years in and then some in this grand experiment of Marvel's Star Wars comics. We have to admit, it's been a heck of a run.In this episode, we're talking the releases from January and the first week of February.Listen to the show here.We interview with comic creators Alex Ray and Jim Mello. The artist and writer from Florida created A Star Wars Comic, a monthly fan-made comic that takes readers -- in just six pages -- deeper into the Star Wars head canon. They join us to discuss the first of what's expected to be a monthly offering, the tale of Benthic Two Tubes, seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The duo has an amazing history together. If the first issue is any indication, it won't be long until we're reading their tales in the pages of Marvel. From there, Jeff McGee and Matt Moore tackle the latest titles from Marvel. They include Star Wars: Doctor Aphra 3, Star Wars 27 and 28, Star Wars: Poe Dameron
