Congrats on the Power Girl Special, and thank you for bringing these characters into the Dawn of DC initiative! To start at a baseline: What are your histories with these characters? All of these are characters with a good bit of baggage, both emotionally and in terms of decades of continuity. How did you create these stories as jumping-on points for new readers? At the same time, these characters have all lent themselves to various interpretations over the years. Human Target, the New 52, etc. How do you go about synthesizing and building off of all of the different women they have been? - i accidentally did this tooPower Girl Special feels like it gets to a lot of emotional areas for Power Girl, especially grief and self-doubt. These emotions are so resonant and deeply powerful, how do you achieve the emotionality in the character and make it so real?Johnny Sorrow, what makes him so fun to write?Leah, we loved X-Terminators – and it got us wondering - and feel free to jump in here, Joanne: What DC characters or team would be ripe for an X-Terminators-style grindhouse book?Joanne, superhero breakups seem to be the worst. Are they actually more difficult than they are for civilians, or just louder?Something tells us Smallville won't be all cornfields and apple pie. What does this series have in store for our heroes?Joanne - Sirens of the City is finally coming to print from Boom in July! How did this come about?Do you have anything else to promote today?Lighting roundFavorite ice cream flavor?Favorite pet type?Favorite Kryptonian?Do you play Marvel Snap? If so, what deck do you run?

At last, The High Republic -- The Nameless Terror #1 (of 4) is in comic shops. Was it worth the wait?Yes, very much so.Will it be difficult to wait almost two months until issue #2 is released?Yes, if #1 is anything to go by, since George Mann, Eduardo Mello, Ornella Savarese, Studio RAM, Matt Dryer, Sanjay Dharawat, Stephen Reichert and Samantha Hummer have delivered a crackling debut issue that ties into The High Republic mythology with ease while creating an aura of suspense. In Yoda #4 (of 10), writer Jody Houser returns to the galaxy a long time ago, reteaming with artist Luke Ross for a three-issue arc that features Yoda in a story set before the Prequel Trilogy and featuring Jedi Master Dooku. THey're joined by color artist Nolan Woodard and letter Joe Caramagna of Virtual Caligraphy. It's a well-paced start that gives us more elements of the Count before his faith in the Jedi was lost and features a trio of young Padawans -- a togorian, wookiee and trandoshan -- that echoes Dooku's own relationship with SIfo-Dyas. Astute readers will recognize a key event in this issue from the pages of Age of Republic: Count Dooku #1. That issue has more emotional heft now. Finally, in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #29, Aphra finds herself in an unusual spot: Completely oblvious to the Spark's dire plans. The story by Alyssa Wong, artist Natacha Bustos, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg and letter Joe Caramagna, blends long-ago history with the effort by Chelli's friends to come to her rescue in a brisk story. APHRA IMPRISONED IN HER OWN MIND WHILE THE SPARK ETERNAL RUNS RAMPANT! For ep 117, Mike delves into the 5 issues of Doctor Aphra set after Crimson Reign, but before the Hidden Empire crossover event, which features an ancient being called the Spark Eternal possessing Aphra, trapping her inside her own memories with no one to speak with aside from a long-dead Chadra-Fan. While this unfolds, Sana Starros puts a crew together to find Aphra while Just Lucky is hotly in pursuit! As well as this plot, Mike provides further information on Cortosis, the Mairan species, the Droid Crush and more! This story is set after Empire Strikes Back & after the Crimson Reign & War Of The Bounty Hunters events, but before Hidden Empire & Return Of The Jedi. Doctor Aphra 22-26 are written by Alyssa Wong, with Minkyu Jung as artist on all issues and Natacha Bustos also as artist on issue 22, and Rachelle Rosenberg is colour artist on all issues. Issue 22 was released July 27th 2022, issue 26 was released 16th November 2022 and the trade paperback collection (for issues 21-25) was released December 27th 2022. This week the CDB Crew dives into the water and swims with the fantastic Graphic Novel, The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. There is so much to talk about when it comes to this story that the Crew decided not to have an additional discussion. However, don't fret, there's a lot of discussion to be had in this episode. I know you're receiving a lot of requests about quarantine reading, but this one is a bit different. My name is Jennie and I am a state unemployment employee. We are working 60+ hours per week and we're still going into the office every day. I'm struggling with relaxing during my meager downtime. I'm looking for something funny to read or a fun romance or even a chill cozy mystery. As far as funny books go, my humor is more dry, so I can be picky and I don't like gross humor at all. Romance I like things that don't really have sex on the page but that's not a real deal breaker. I'm not a huge romance person so I haven't read a lot. Please don't recommend Red, White and Royal Blue. I did not enjoy it... It just wasn't for me. Any thoughts on books that could help me wind down after my long days would be great. Thanks ladies!!! -Jennifer 2. I don't have good words about the situation we're all in right now, only hopes that you and those you love are well! I'm writing because I need a little help with a birthday gift for my daughter. She will be 11 on April 30, and had been looking forward to hosting a Harry Potter-themed sleepover with her besties. Obviously, that will not be happening. Of course, we will still celebrate her like whoa, and the party can still happen at some time in the hazy future, but for now, but for now, she's pretty bummed. I would like to get her a book (or several) or her birthday to help fill the hours and distract her a bit. She is an advanced reader, and reads widely, but lately has been wanting to read some graphic novels and/or manga. So far she has enjoyed a manga of Pride and Prejudice and another of Emma, as well as the Zita the Space Girl series (thanks for that rec!), the graphic novels of the Baby Sitters Club, and everything Raina Telgemeier has ever done. She also LOVES Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl, and I just ordered the first trade of Lumberjanes, thinking some combination of Baby Sitters Club plus supernatural content might be a hit with her. Her tastes are all over the map right now. Favorite recent reads have been the Harry Potter series, the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, the Hunger Games series, The Land of Stories series, all of Karina Yan Glaser's Vanderbeekers books, and every old Baby Sitters Club book I had (she found a box in my parent's attic over Christmas, and has blazed through them), and she is on the second book of the School for Good and Evil Series currently. She also recently read and enjoyed "The Selection" by Kiera Cass, which she said she liked "because of the romance;" she enjoyed the romance subplots of the Hunger Games as well. She's really grooving on the identity of being a self-described "nerdy girl" right now, loves theater, and plasters all her notebooks with cat stickers and NASA stickers (to give you a little bit more of who she is). We don't really limit what she reads, and she chooses for herself what she's comfortable with. Clearly violence/peril isn't a deal-breaker because she loved the Hunger Games. However, she picked up a manga shelved in our library's YA section that featured some nudity, and she was NOT a fan. Can you help me find some graphic novels/manga/comics that might appeal and help brighten up her birthday? Thank you!!! -Jenn 3. Hi, I hope you guys are staying safe and healthy! I’ve recently read Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and Normal People by Sally Rooney and I fell in love with the complex dynamics between characters, power shifts, and ESPECIALLy the upending of a seemingly pristine, wealthy veneer. In Little Fires Everywhere I loved how there was the seemingly perfect planned community of Shaker Heights and the equally perfect, wealthy Richardson family, but as the plot develops and you dive deeper into the characters’ psyche and background you realize that it’s all hanging on by just a thread. A similar concept happens in Normal People as Marianna lives in this beautiful mansion in the nice part of town but although raised in material wealth you soon realize she lives in significant emotional deprivation which has negatively affected her sense of self. I would love to find another book that touches on this same idea, the uncovering of a seemingly perfect, wealthy and beautiful setting, life, person or family. In a book I love discovering that there’s more to the story than a person’s projected image, that the surface is just the touch of the iceberg. Other books I’ve enjoyed: The Mothers by Brit Bennett (SO GOOD!), Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney and The Learning Curve by Mandy Berman. Thanks!! -EW 4. I'm looking for a light read to recommend to a friend as a distraction. She recently had to cancel her wedding because of COVID and could use some fluff (but maybe not anything with too much of an over the top love celebration HEA just yet). Typically she reads more non-fiction (David Sedaris is a favorite) or literary fiction with her book club but I'd like to gift her the book-equivalent of binge watching Great British Bake Off or Project Runway. Any suggestions? -Heather 5. I recently read a couple of New Adult college romance books. For the first time in a while I've found characters that I can identify with. I'm also in my early twenties, in college and doubting my career path. The problem is that in these books boys and relationships are always the answer to their problems. Do you know of any books with this kind of setting without the relationship being the answer to everything? I really dislike YA and would prefer the characters to be more mature. -Rose 6. I discovered your show about 3 months back. I love it. Can't get enough of it! I recently read the book "Night Boat to Tangier". More than the plot I loved the way the book is written. Long, winding conversations between two old friends. I also love the "Before Sunrise" movie series for the conversation between the leads. I would love to read more books of this type. I read all genres. -Pragna 7. I've just finished All the Single Ladies (Rebecca Traistor), as recommended by one of the Book Riot podcasts! I'd love something similar, strong single women having great lives and dealing with the judgmental parents, but with less statistics and politics than All the Single Ladies. Female led chick lit? Bio of a fab business woman? Anything to combat the "but don't you want a boyfriend?!??" people! -Caroline Books Discussed Spirit Run by Noe Álvarez The Outrun by Amy Liptrot To Have and To Hoax by Martha Waters An Elderly Lady is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten, transl. by Marlaine Delargy Jonesy #1 by Sam Humphries, illustrated by Cailtin Rose Boyle Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Vol. 1: BFF by Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare, illustrated by Natacha Bustos (also, Rocket Girl) Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty by Ramona Ausubel (rec’d by Rebecca) The Clancys of Queens by Tara Clancy Naturally Tan by Tan France (tw: discussion of racism, depression, and suicidal ideation) Normal People by Sally Rooney (tw: emotional abuse) Chemistry by Weike Wang (tw: bad parents) This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone Outline by Rachel Cusk (rec’d by Jessica) Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes All Grown Up by Jami Attenberg (tw: sick child)

Images for this episode will be at http://wp.me/p42KN3-ESt starting 7/25/2017 9am EST. On this week’s Comics Syllabus podcast, researcher, teacher, and podcaster Grace Gipson joins Paul to talk about “Black Panther: World of Wakanda” by Roxane Gay, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Alitha Martinez, and others, and “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” by Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, and others from Marvel Comics. We’re really excited to have Grace (on Twitter @GBreezy20) as a guest, and she talks about her comics origins, her research, and her podcasting on the #BlackComicsChat team. Then, Grace and Paul explore her approach to these portrayal of black female characters in current Marvel comics, and we dig into the significance of Lunella Lafayette (Moon Girl) and Ayo and Aneka, the protagonists of “World of Wakanda.” But first, in the opening “General Ed” segment, we’d happy to have “The Non-Fiction Section” with Michelle White, Multiversity contributor and lifeblood of the “Keep It Real” column that looks at reality-based comics and graphic novels. Michelle offers a wide-ranging list of three non-fiction comics recommendations for us, “Feynman” by Jim Ottaviani and Leland Myrick (First Second), “The Green River Killer” by Jeff Jensen and Jonathan Case (Dark Horse), and “The Influencing Machine” by Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld (WW Norton). I’m Paul, and I’m inviting you to join us for another episode of The Comics Syllabus, a comics analysis podcast. Our mantra is, we read widely and we dig deep. Each week, we choose one work from a wide breadth of current and classic comics, including superhero fare, comics from independent publishers and small presses, global comics, newspaper strip archives, and various collected editions. We spend time digging deep into the work from various perspectives, sometimes in actual live conversation with others, sometimes with just me on a mic surrounded by a pile of comics studies and academic books. It’s like a comics seminar, where the only prerequisite is that you love comics. Download the podcast episode here. You can find the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Soundcloud, or copy this RSS feed to your podcatcher: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:235183739/sounds.rss or find archives for this podcast (previously named “Study Comics with Paul”) here: http://studycomics.club/ A rating, review, or star on whatever podcast source would help make the world a slightly better place. (No, Really!) Follow Paul on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TwoPlai It’s the only place on earth he stays under 140 characters. Thanks for listening!
