It took a little creativity to find the Ojibway words for a sci-fi glossary fit for Star Wars, but concepts like "The Force" and "The Resistance" are familiar concepts to Indigenous people. It made Star Wars: A New Hope a rewarding challenge to dub into Anishinaabemowin. Rosanna speaks with the actors who brought the words to life, and the translators who are passing language to the next generation. Plus, we step into the triology and hear how Padme Amidala looks with a little Choctaw flare.

"Synergy!" Find your magical earrings everyone and let Synergy transform you into a Hologram as Saturday Morning Adventures continues to be totally outrageous as we revisit Jem and The Holograms 2015 movie. The Human Star Wars Encyclopedia, The Padme Amidala of Anime, and co-host of The Socially Distanced and Anime x Pop podcasts Amanda Rivas is joined by her unofficial sister and long-time best friend Marissa Ruiz, as Amanda's blood rival, Vanessa Gonzales, is on assignment searching for Synergy's missing robotic pieces. The movie follows Jerrica Benton who becomes famous as mysterious alter-ego Jem when a video of her singing in Jem's hair and make-up is uploaded to YouTube. Jerrica, her sister Kimber, and foster sisters Shana and Aja put on three shows after being courted by Starlight Records executive Erica Raymond while searching for the missing pieces of SYNERGY, a robot Jerrica's dad left her before his passing. Marissa and Amanda briefly discuss their love of the 1985 Jem and the Holograms cartoon, their initial reactions to the 2015 film's release, cast performances, and why they love Erica Raymond and her bodyguard Zipper. They also discuss how they thought the film could have succeeded and major plot changes the film made.
"Synergy!" Find your magical earrings everyone and let Synergy transform you into a Hologram as for the next two weeks, Saturday Morning Adventures becomes totally outrageous as we revisit Jem and The Holograms. The Human Star Wars Encyclopedia, The Padme Amidala of Anime, and co-host of The Socially Distanced and Anime x Pop podcasts Amanda Rivas is joined by her blood rival, real-life sister, and Bridgerton enthusiast Vanessa Gonzales to talk about this animated musical TV series created via a joint collaboration between Hasbro, Sunbow Productions, and Marvel Productions that ran from 1985 - 1988. This series follows the adventures of Jerrica Benton, record company owner, who transforms into her singer alter-ego Jem with the help of her computer Synergy, and the adventures of her band Jem and The Holograms. Vanessa and Amanda reminisce about why they fell in love with the series, talk about the message behind the show, and who was more interesting between Jerrica and Jem. They also talk about the legendary rivalry between Jem and The Holograms and The Misfits, series villain Eric Raymond, and the eternal love triangle between Jerrica, Jem, and Jerrica's long-time boyfriend Rio. Lastly, they talk about the legacy the show left a whole generation of 80's babies with. Join us next week as Amanda watches for the first time ever and Vanessa revisits the 2015 live-action Jem and The Holograms film. Will the movie be truly as outrageous as the show? You'll have to tune in to find out.

Met with ambivalence by most, genuine revulsion by others upon its initial release in the summer of 1999, the film (and the prequel trilogy more broadly) have seen a continued reappraisal, especially in the era of so many soulless Disney-era Star Wars productions. The Phantom Menace is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary with a recent limited re-release on IMAX screens. On this episode, we make a case for the film not just as comparatively good, but a genuinely excellent entry in the Star Wars canon. We discuss the film's place within the the decade-spanning saga as well as its position within the film landscape of the era - how it pushed the boundaries of digital effects integration, and signaled (in non-alarmist terms) an evolving style of blockbuster filmmaking. Then, we talk about the film's narrative highs and lows, and share our thoughts on the critical points of 25 years of criticism: Midi-chlorians, Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, Watto and more. Finally, we praise the film's many incredible formal qualities - its relationship to Lucas's early student films visual experiements, The Phantom Menace's debt to classic cinema greats like Kurosawa and Douglas Sirk, and the brilliance of the film's multi-phase finale, cross-cutting between four different theaters of action seamlessly.Follow Neil Bahadur on Twitter and LetterboxdWatch 'The Beginning: Making Start Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace'Watch '1:42:08 To Qualify', George Lucas's 1966 short film....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

With today's biggest talking points being cameos, leaks, spoilers. Some of our culture's biggest content creators and the super fan media have sadly focused largely on the novel and turned away from the substance and science of good story telling. Unknowingly contributing to the subsequent dumbing down of geek kind. We'll share our observations and discuss what you the listener can do to combat this and diversify your diet. From there we discuss the apparent return of Natalie Portman to the world of Star Wars and the role of Padme Amidala, we'll explore possible story ideas, examine the merit of a prequel post Obi-Wan Kenobi, and pitch a few story ideas of our own. All this and so much more on this episode of Meanwhile Back On The Podcast.
Brek Schutten is a family man with five children that spends his days working as a nurse in the intensive care unit. But that hasn't stopped the Michigan native from dominating the live tournament circuit for more than a year now. The 34-year-old topped a record-field of 2,482 entries in the 2021 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open to win a life-changing $1,261,095, and in the months since has parlayed that score into even more cash. After making two final tables at the Poker Masters last September for a combined $162,900, Schutten took down the $15,000 high roller at the Wynn in March for $219,300. This summer he packed up the family for a trip to Las Vegas, where he opened with a win in the MGM Grand Mystery Bounty event for a total of $71,000. Then at the World Series of Poker, Schutten jumped into the big high rollers, taking fifth in the $25,000 event for $323,730 and second in the $50,000 event for $820,808. He now has $3.4 million in live tournament earnings. Highlights from this interview include finding poker through a radio ad, why he got into nursing, being cool under pressure, 15 big blinds and a dream, celebrating in Florida with Mickey Mouse, gambling on himself, battling Jake Schindler for the poker community, House vs. Grey's Anatomy, bagging groceries with big bro, a backyard batting cage, being kicked out of the band, Padme Amidala and brown sugar rice, and getting mistaken for David Peters.

This is Pete Fletzer and welcome to disturbances in the Force. All the links to the original sources can be found in the notes and I urge you to check them out. 1.The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will debut in less than two weeks on Disney Plus and the press tour surrounding it is in full swing. This past week Director Debora Chow and stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christense and Moses Ingram were seen in Berlin and London. In talking about her character, an Imperial Inquisitor named Reva, Moses Ingram said QUOTE “She is ruthless. She doesn't care about what people think about the way she does things. She'll cut people down and get the job done whatever it takes.” The actress went on to say about her costars, “even on set there were lifelong fans who would just get so moved by being around Ewan or Hayden. I think it's going to be a big deal for fans to see them at the center.” There have been no new nuggets of information about the story shared so far on the press tour but Ewan did say that it took him some time to get back to the Alec Guiness style of speaking for the title role. Obi-Wan Kenobi debuts on Disney plus on Friday, May 27th with the first two episodes of the six-part series.2.Video game industry insider Jeff Grubb said on a recent Grubbsnax stream that the title for the sequel to the wildly popular Jedi: Fallen Order game will be Jedi: Survivor. Grub has also said in previous scoops that gameplay footage from the sequel to the EA RESPAWN game would be shared at Star Wars Celebration later this month. The video game reporter also claims that Jedi: Survivor will be a next-gen console game only. There is no release date or confirmation of the title at this time.3.Keeping with video game news, Lego, the Skywalker Saga continues to make waves in the industry. According to the website GamesBeat, the brick-based Star Wars game is already ranked as the number two selling video game of 2022 so far ahead of the latest Pokemon offering and the epic Horizon Zero Dawn sequel trailing only Elden Ring in sales. 4.Bryce Dallas Howard was interviewed by friend of the podcast, Germain Lussier at io9 recently and of course the topic of Star Wars came up. The daughter of Solo 2 director Ron Howard, has been behind the camera for two episodes of the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett episode titled “Return of the Mandalorian.” When asked if there was a story that would spark her interest in direting a Star Wars film she said quote “Oh my goodness, I think it would take someone asking me.” Bryce will next be seen ON screen reprising her role as Claire Dearing for the third time when Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters June 10th.5.Speaking of directors on Disney Plus Star Wars shows, this week, in a simple photo of a an Ahsoka-logo emblazoned directors chair and a signature cowboy hat belonging to one Dave Filoni, the official star wars twitter account revealed that production has officially begun on the Ahsoka live-action series. Shortly thereafter, rumors emerged from movie scooper Daniel RPK and Adam Frazier that actor Mathew Law has been brought on to the show in a quote “big role.” The Six-foot one Law is best known for a role in four episodes of Agents of Shield. This unconfirmed casting joins other rumored actors including Natasha Loo Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, and Mary Elizabeth Winsted, Ivanna Sahkno (SOK-NO) and Ray Stevenson in unidentified roles. The Ahsoka series does not yet have an official release date.6.Michael Waldron, the writer who worked on Loki and Doctor Strange among other Marvel projects, is finally turning his attention to the long rumored Kevin Feige Star Wars film. He told Variety QUOTE ““We're finally into it in earnest. I mean, I'm writing away. It's a lot of fun…It just doesn't have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you're servicing on top of it, the way I did with Doctor Strange. So it's nice..” The Feige film was first mentioned in 2019 and is expected to be a one-off project. There is no title or release date from Lucasfilm for the movie at this time.7.In Star Wars book news, friend of the show Mike Chen is officially a Star Wars novelist. His new book hit shelves on May 10 called Brotherhood and it chronicles events at the start of the Clone Wars and features the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Included in the book are familiar characters Padme Amidala and Asajj Ventress. You can buy the book now at the link in the show notes from Amazon. 8.Also this week, the cover for Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel was revealed featuring Han Solo and Leia Organa in a romantic pose with the Halcyon Starcruiser and the ewok village on Endor in opposing corners. But trouble lurks in the form of stormtroopers charging in at the edge of the artwork. Beth Revis' novel is expected to hit shelves on August 16 this year. That wraps it up for this week's Disturbances in the Force.
