Episode 47 - Murdock and Marvel: 1998 Part 2 Things continued to be grim in the comic world, but it seemed as though the freefall might be over.  Marvel had escaped bankruptcy without missing even a single month of publishing, most of the other companies still in business made it through the year (but not all) and some very interesting new players entered the scene.  This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story. The Takeaway for 1998 - which is a look back at volume 1 of Daredevil - will be released next week as it's own episode.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances:  Daredevil #371-380, Marvel Knights: Daredevil #1-2, Uncanny X-Men #351, Thunderbolts #10, Unlimited Access #2, Shadow & Light #1, Cable #55, Ka-Zar #15, Spider-Man Made Men #1, Nighthawk #1-3, Avengers #10-11, and Bring Back the Bad Guys graphic novel.  Writing: Joe Kelly (#371-373) Kelly and Jonathan Barron (#374), Kelly and Chris Claremont (#375), Scott Lobdell (#376-379), Dan G. Chichester (#380)  Pencils: Ariel Olivetti (#371-372, #374), Richie Acosta (#373), Cary Nord, Olivetti, John Paul Leon, Tom Lyle, Brian Denham and Rick Leonardi (#375), Cully Hamner (#376-379), Lee Weeks (#380)  Inks: Pier Brito (#371-372, #374), Bud LaRosa (#373), Mark Lipka, Brito, John Paul Leon, Robert Jones, Chis Carlson and Scott Hanna (#375), Jason Martin (#376-379), Robert Campanella (#380)  The year begins with Black Widow and Daredevil discussing their recent run-ins both professionally and personally. Meanwhile Karen goes shopping with Rosalind. Matt and Karen do make up despite Daredevil leaving for a bit  Next Mr. Fear pops back up after we learn something weird happened during the prison riot he planned last year. DD tries to talk to the warden, but Ghost Rider beats him to it. Fear and DD play cat and mouse for a couple issues before things come to a head. Meanwhile, we are introduced to Charlie, a likely cop whose working for Fear, who first tries to kill Fogy's sister Candice before going after Karen.  In a double sized issue #375, We learn Charlie has been killed and Karen is awaiting trial for his murder. Mr. Fear is trying to manipulate things so that she will go to jail and DD will suffer a breakdown as a result. Matt is Karen's lawyer and while the case slowly slips away from him, he continues to search for Fear as Daredevil hoping it will save his case. We won't spoil the ending, as this is the spotlight story for the week.  And just like that, the story quickly shifts to France...  In the final named story arc of volume 1, Flying Blind, we meet Laurent Levasseur whom very much seems like our man without fear – though he thinks his just an artist. Turns out Murdock is working deep undercover for SHIELD and had his memory reprogrammed. Murdock is there to stop the sale of agent information to international buyers of the Kingpin. After spending most of the story trying to remember who he is and save the doctor who initially treated him at the start of this tale, Murdock gets his memories back from a mutant named Synapse just as SHIELD locates him and busts in as the cavalry.   One side effect of the reprogramming was Murdock was able to actually see. He loses it after getting his memories back but he's able to see his friend Foggy for the first and only time.  In November, Volume 1 ends with one last issue – issue #380 – and the return on Dan G Chichester and Lee Weeks for “a tale from Daredevil's past” dedicated to Archie Goodwin. A pretty straight-forward story though told non-sequentially in which the Kingpin tries to frame a Middle Eastern man for terrorism so he can get his hands on a shipment of weapons; Matt defends the patsy and wins in court; Meanwhile DD takes on several of his deadliest foes to foil the Kingpin's scheme. (The Hand/Bushwacker/Bullseye)  The final page sees Murdock and his mom Maggie walking and having ice cream with narration “You want to know the truth? The good guys don't always win. But because of who they are, they never stop fighting. There's always a Daredevil willing to take a risk on our behalf. And in a city that never sleeps, we can all rest easy knowing we have that to protect us.”  That same month, Volume 2 begins under the Marvel Knight branding begins with a new creative team – Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti. In the first 2 books of the Guardian Devil storyline, we learn Karen left Matt and NYC for LA 6 months ago and Matt has been trying to move on with his life. A teenage girl brings a baby to Matt that she claims is the new Messiah and leaves the kid in his care but then Murdock is approached by a mysterious old man claims the same child is the Anti-Christ and a curse to those around it.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #375 May 1998 “With a Little Help From My Friends”  Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway - Next week The Takeaway was a recap and discussion of volume 1 of Daredevil. Episode 43 - Murdock and Marvel: 1996 Part 2 Well, here we are, Duane.  At the End of Days.  I have been promising you that everything was going to explode eventually.  And finally we have arrived.  Welcome to the fateful year 1996, when Marvel came crashing down.  This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1996.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances:  Daredevil #348-359, Punisher #4, What if…? #83, Marvel versus DC / DC versus Marvel #2-3, Green Goblin #6 and 12, Doom 2099 #40-42, Over the Edge #6 and 10, Wolverine #103-104, New Warriors #73, Spider-Man Unlimited #13, Essential Wolverine #1, Essential X-Men #1, Spider-Man #74, Elektra Megazine #1-2, Essential Spider-Man #1 and Age of Innocence: The Rebirth of Iron Man, Spider-Man's Greatest Team-Ups and Elektra Lives Again graphic novels  Writing: J.M. DeMatteis (348-350), John Rozum (351), Ben Rabb (352), Karl Kesel (353-357), Joe Kelly (358-359)  Pencils: Cary Nord (348-349, 353-357), Ron Wagner (350), Shawn McManus (351-352), Pasqual Ferry (358), Nord and Larry Hama (359)  Inks: Bill Reinhold (348, 350), Al Williamson (349), Shawn McManus (351-352), Matt Ryan (353-357, 359), Pasqual Ferry (358)  The year begins with Matt trying to reconcile his recent identity crisis while Foggy is angry about the secret he's finally learned. Matt tries visiting with his mother Maggie, but it's his old Mentor Stick that helps him – though in the process he ends up taking on the Chaste.  Foggy and Matt begin practicing law together again. From there, things return to normal (or at least what's normal for Daredevil or Matt Murdock), He takes out Agent Vice who's extorting money from other criminals. Daredevil must take on Mastermind who is also Matt Murdock's client.   In June we get a new creative team that was teased at the end of issue 352. Karl Kesel and Cary Nord. We also get a re-imagined Mr. Hyde from John Romita Jr. Hyde seems to be totally unhinged (with an equally terrifying look). Daredevil confronts Hyde in an old Osborn warehouse where a woman has been murdered. Hyde continues to act crazy and is ultimately arrested.   During this issue Foggy and Matt (mostly Matt) are asked to partner with hotshot lawyer Rosalind (Razor) Sharpe. Sharpe tells Matt privately that the two are a package deal. She doesn't just want Foggy. Foggy seemed weirdly eager to join her so Matt accepts.  And as a first case under the new partnership, Sharpe was Murdock to represent Mr. Hyde. At first, Murdock doesn't want to do it, but after meeting with Hyde – Matt doesn't think he killed the girl. The leads to Daredevil taking on Pyro and looking for clues at the warehouse – with the help of Misty Knight – which leads to a secret tunnel and a group of criminals called the Enforcers and their newest member the Eel – who captures our hero. The story ends when Daredevil escapes and captures the Eel and presents the Eel to the courtroom waiting for the trial of Mr. Hyde to start.  The year ends with two standalone stories that have a much different look and feel from the rest of the year. In the first, Daredevil takes on Mysterio who's working on a super-hero insurance scam. This fun story will be our spotlight story for the week. In the second, we see a night of Daredevil fighting crime while Karen Page talks to people of New York about their thoughts on Daredevil (now that the Fantastic Four and Avengers are gone) during her late-night radio call in show.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #358 November 1996 “Aftermath”  Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Stick to what you are good at.  Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.

At last, The High Republic -- The Nameless Terror #1 (of 4) is in comic shops. Was it worth the wait?Yes, very much so.Will it be difficult to wait almost two months until issue #2 is released?Yes, if #1 is anything to go by, since George Mann, Eduardo Mello, Ornella Savarese, Studio RAM, Matt Dryer, Sanjay Dharawat, Stephen Reichert and Samantha Hummer have delivered a crackling debut issue that ties into The High Republic mythology with ease while creating an aura of suspense. In Yoda #4 (of 10), writer Jody Houser returns to the galaxy a long time ago, reteaming with artist Luke Ross for a three-issue arc that features Yoda in a story set before the Prequel Trilogy and featuring Jedi Master Dooku. THey're joined by color artist Nolan Woodard and letter Joe Caramagna of Virtual Caligraphy. It's a well-paced start that gives us more elements of the Count before his faith in the Jedi was lost and features a trio of young Padawans -- a togorian, wookiee and trandoshan -- that echoes Dooku's own relationship with SIfo-Dyas. Astute readers will recognize a key event in this issue from the pages of Age of Republic: Count Dooku #1. That issue has more emotional heft now. Finally, in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #29, Aphra finds herself in an unusual spot: Completely oblvious to the Spark's dire plans. The story by Alyssa Wong, artist Natacha Bustos, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg and letter Joe Caramagna, blends long-ago history with the effort by Chelli's friends to come to her rescue in a brisk story. SLOW CITY BLUES is an ongoing series following Detective John Loris, who gets trapped inside his imagination after a horrible accident causes him to try and take his own life. John instead ends up in Slow City, a construct of his mind's eye, a place where anything is possible – except a way out. There, he must battle his deeply-rooted inner demons and examine who he truly was before entering this purgatory. I had the privilege to sit down with Samuel Haine And John Livesay to talk about this new series and how it came about! Samuel Haine came up with the premise for Slow City Blues after being turned down for a staff writing position at a video game company in 2013. Soon after, he saved up enough money waiting tables to commission the first set of sample pages while living off food stamps. From those first pages, he was introduced to John Livesay, who liked the story, but knew the art needed direction and Sam needed guidance. John connected Sam with Legendary Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, who taught Sam the ins and outs of writing for comics – what Sam calls the “Shooter School of Storytelling.” John, acting as Coordinator, put together the art team, as well as landed a host of A-list cover artists. Sam found that the world of Slow City helped him reflect and better understand what was happening in the world and his part in it. He hopes the story connects in an authentic manner and inspires tough conversations and loving introspection. This amazingly fun series also sports some world-class artwork on the variant covers, including David Finch, Paul Pope, Derrick Chew, Doug Mahnke, Brett Booth, Julian Totino Tedesco, Francesco Mattina, Yasmine Putri, Howard Porter, Phillip Tan, Cary Nord, Pat Olliffe, and Randy Green. To purchase this series click here, anyone who purchases the early bird special in the first 48 hours will be entered to win a piece of original artwork! EPISODE 69Happy Holidays, Explorers! Join the gang as they take a look at The Authority/Lobo: Holiday Hell. Keith Giffen, Alan Grant, Tom Peyer, and Will Pfeifer wrote the stories. Art by Simon Bisley, Scott Iwahashi, and Cary Nord. DC Comics published the book in 2018.The stories that make up the two parts of the book are The Lobo Paramilitary Christams Special and The Authority Vs. Lobo — Jingle Hell. In the first story, a rival of Santa Claus contracts Lobo to take him out. In the second story, Jenny, a little girl, discovers what Lobo did to Santa. She enlists The Authority to get revenge on Lobo for Santa's demise.Dennis and Johnny (Frankie was up at the North Pole) kick things off by discussing why it's so much fun when the North Pole is portrayed as a paramilitary operation; if Santa, Saddam Hussein, and Tony Montana all hired the same decorator; and if the art reflects how Lobo sees existence. Furthermore, they look into the time DC tried to make a My Chemical Romance Lobo instead of a White Zombie Lobo.Further topics include the fight between Lobo and Santa; Wildstorm comics; the overall fun of this holiday book; the joy of Elseworld stories, the fun warning at the beginning of the book; DC's successes and missteps; and last, but not least, the storytelling and art of The Authority/Lobo: Holiday Hell.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode Notes This is the episode in which I talk about Conan Volume 1: The Frost Giant's Daughter and Other Stories by Kurt Busiek, Tim Truman, Haden Blackman, Cary Nord, Thomas Yeates, Richard Starkings, and Dave Stewart"When the internationally famous barbarian hero returned to comics, with an all-new fresh start by award-winning writer Kurt Busiek (JLA/Avengers, Astro City) and dynamic artists Cary Nord, Thomas Yeates, and Dave Stewart, the result was instant sell-outs and multiple printings to keep up with the demand. Now Conan's earliest adventures are collected in a handsome 192-page collection. Catch all the action and savagery as he wars with the murderous Vanir, meets the Frost Giant's Daughter, and is taken as a slave by the ancient sorcerers of Hyperborea! This top-selling new series faithfully expands on original author Robert E. Howard's literary creation. Collecting issues #0-#6 and fourteen pages from issue #7 of the ongoing series."Published by Dark Horse on March 30, 2005.Most of this episode was originally published on January 13, 2019. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .More stuff:The theme song used in each episode is Night Drive by The Oldfield Victory. The pod returns with a guest we have been trying to get on for quite a while. Longtime comics creator Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) is here to discuss his current Kickstarter project Section Zero 1959, a continuation of the series he and Tom Grummett started almost 20 years ago. We talk about the creation of that series in 2000 and its return as a Kickstarter project in 2017., with the hardcover out now and the story being serialized by Image Comics in April. We talk about the book's inspirations , notably the work of Jack Kirby. (I interviewed Karl way back in issue 27 of the Jack Kirby Collector about his love of the King and some of his more esoteric characters). We also do a deep dive into Karl's career, featuring some of our favorite books over the last couple decades. We chat about a few books he did with Stuart Immonen, Adventures of Superman, the Fantastic Four Annual from 1998 and the DC event series Final Night. We also discuss one of my all-time favorite (and all too brief) comic books series his run on Daredevil with Cary Nord.On the day of our interview, Section Zero 1959 had two weeks left to go in its Kickstarter campaign and was just over 80% funded. For information on the book and some very cool incentives if you pledge, head over to SectionZero1959.com.Two other pieces of business: We will soon be starting our series on the website called High Wire Act, which is an episode by episode break-down of the classic 1960s spy show Danger Man (aka Secret Agent). We hope to have a pod up soon discussing that with a returning podcast guest. Also, we are in talks to do our first convention in a few years in the summer. If we do the show, we will likely have a new issue of the magazine out to go along with the appearance.

Just to mix things up a bit we have decided to take a look at the original The Tower of the Elephant story by Robert E. Howard and two, count 'em two, comic adaptations of the same story.  The first Conan comic Dave ever came to love is  The Savage Sword of Conan, and it contained the beautifully illustrated Alfredo Alcala, John Buscema and Roy Thomas version that we review here.  And we compare it to the Dark Horse Comics version of said Conan story by Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord.  Now there is something a bit different for our show; a comic book and book comparison.  We hope you enjoy the discussion and digressions!    Music kindly provided by Erdenstern.  Readings by Rick Hollander and Daryl McDaniel.

Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke may be the worst dad in DC Comics but the solo series he stars in, by writer Christopher Priest and artists including Larry Hama, Carlo Pagulayan, Cary Nord, Diogenes Neves and more, is one of the hottest comics today. Deathstroke is full of politics, violence, poor personal choices, byzantineplots and Episcopalian philosophy. Join us for a deep dive into the current series with our Esteemed Guests: Hub is the writer, producer, and co-host of Titan Up the Defense, a podcast that covers the two entirely unrelated Bronze Age series the New Teen Titans and the Defenders. It's one of Elana's favorite comics podcasts ever. Leslie Lee III is a writer and host of Struggle Session, a podcast that takes a leftist look at the reactionary wasteland of American pop culture. Spencer Ackerman is an aspiring comic book writer and a senior national security correspondent for the Daily Beast. As the US national security editor for the Guardian, Ackerman was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team reporting on Edward Snowden's NSA revelations, and as a senior writer for Wired, he won a National Magazine Award for reporting on Islamophobic counterterrorism training at the FBI.

The Joy of Geek Podcast, Episode 54: Netflix's The Punisher and Alias Grace, Crisis on Earth-X, and GNBC on X-O Manowar Vol. 1 On this episode of the Joy of Geek Podcast, we (Rich and Kevin) try to retain our composure in the lead-up to the release of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and talk about a variety of recent TV, Movies and Comics releases. Our conversation includes the new Doomsday Clock series from DC Comics (AKA the Watchmen sequel), a discussion of the 4-part Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Earth-X, our final thoughts on Netflix Original Series The Punisher and Alias Grace, recent films Coco and Wind River, the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, our fever-pitch anticipation levels for Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars, and much more. And for the main event we take a deep dive into the wonderful world of Valiant Entertainment. With a new web series on the way (Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe) and feature films based on Bloodshot and Harbinger on the horizon, it's an excellent time to talk about the rebirth of a publisher whose books are consistently at the top of our must-read piles. We start by discussing the book that re-launched the Valiant imprint, with a Graphic Novel Book Club chat about X-O Manowar Vol. 1: By the Sword, by Robert Venditti and Cary Nord. We'll go full spoilers on the first four issues, and offer some intriguing hints about where the series goes from there. So join us, for an episode that takes us all over the universe (and multiverse): from modern superheroes on page and screen, to Margaret Atwood's take on 1843 Canada, to the Land of the Dead and a Galaxy Far, Far Away. This...is the Joy of Geek!

Another Dallas Comic Con was held this past weekend, October 4-6, at the Irving Convention Center. Derek was there looking through comics, taking in the sights, and talking with a variety of creators and publishers. He recorded his conversations, and you'll find the fruits of his labor in this new episode. This con was filled wtih celebrities, cosplayers, and comics sellers, but Derek headed straight for the people who are actually the heart and soul of the event: the writers, artists, and publishers of comics. While on the floor Derek was able to get brief interviews with Joe Eisma, Cary Nord, Robert Wilson IV, Josh Howard, Andy Hirsch, Richard Dominguez, Michael Golden, Steve Niles, and comics legend Neal Adams. He also took the time to engage with folks at several independent publishers such as Terror Comics (where you can find Life Is Brutal and Thought Nog), Overground Comics (home of Absent Captain and Graduate), Space Gun Studios (publishers of The Old Ones and Dash Bradley), Comic Book Divas (with Miss Misery's A Haunting Desire and Penny Dreadful's Cauldron of Terror), and the local distributors of Vamplets. There's lots of fun talk and interesting insights, so listen along as Derek meanders the convention floor.

We’re going to HeroesCon! If you’re going to be in Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend, come find us and say hello! Your beloved hosts will be moderating some panels and wandering around the con all weekend. This week Brett (X-Men devotee) and Ben (self-described Trekkie) join forces to read two of the strangest crossover stories in comic book history: Star Trek/X-Men #1 (1996) by Scott Lobdell (with art provided by pretty much everyone that ever worked at Top Cow) and Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Second Contact #1 (1998) by Dan Abnett, Ian Edginton and Cary Nord. Spoiler: these books are actually pretty good, crazy as they may be. Topics discussed include: the Top Cow hip hop crew; are the X-Men helping out Star Trek, or vice versa?; Gary Mitchell and other villain names; the relative sizes of things in outer space; the late ‘90s multimedia craze; and how to induce sentimentality with judicious use of time travel and alternate realities. Where’s Matt? Well, due to technical difficulties (which also made this episode late) we had to re-record this one, and schedules did not work out. But we were able to salvage some audio from the first session, so his comments are here too. These issues are out of print, so enjoy looking at some of these excerpts as you listen. Star Trek/X-Men #1 Scotty says “Laddie” a lot Gladiator in space Did he just punch my ship?“ Detailed Wolverine, featureless Scotty. Dr. McCoy? Check out Wolverine’s bone claws! Wolverine speaking to an instrument panel. Friend of yours? Bishop is impossibly buff. Cyclops throws Phoenix under the bus. Gary/Proteus is defeated, everyone go home. Gambit flirting with Uhura. Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Second Contact #1 Painstaking attempt at continuity. Brief cameo by The Thunderbolts. Colussus sneaking up on Mr. Data, who is dressed like your dad. Kang and his color-coded costume. The far flung future of 2013. Battle of Wolf 359. John Proudstar serving aboard the USS Saratoga. Kitty is growing up, right? Kitty destroys a sentinel. Kitty finally sees her mind travel. Kitty Pryde kissing Wesley Crusher. Riker and Banshee (two of Brett’s crushes) team up. Wolverine gave Worf a cigar. Computer coloring creates Deanna Troibot. You can also watch/read (most) of the first comic on YouTube. And, as always, you can click the comic book covers to purchase these issues on MyComicShop.com. See you at HeroesCon! Matt, Brett, and producer Ben sneak away from a big Memorial Day picnic in order to talk about the latest Star Trek film, why it’s so divisive, and how long-term exposure to comic book continuity has influenced Matt and Brett’s take on the film. Also: how important is Peter Parker’s financial situation to the Spider-Man mythos? Matthew Yglesias on Star Trek in movies versus on television Next week we will be reading Star Trek/X-Men #1 (1996) by Scott Lobdell with art provided by pretty much everyone that ever worked at Top Cow, and Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Second Contact #1 (1998) by Dan Abnett, Ian Edginton and Cary Nord. Ben’s a super Star Trek fan and Brett’s a super X-Men fan. Who will be more let down?! Click the links above to purchase these issues on MyComicShop.com.
