A year ago, Scott Morse found himself adrift, severed from a stable income and a defined creative path. Panic was an option. So was fear. Instead, he chose collaboration and creation. This Ink Runs Cold: Short Stories from the Space-Crime Continuum smashes two of his favorite genres between its pages. It's an anthology of one-page pulp stories written by 89 different writers, all drawn by Scott Morse and colored by José Villarrubia. Many of these writers are seasoned comic veterans, animators, and filmmakers. The table of contents includes Mike Allred, Brian Michael Bendis, Jorge Gutierrez, Derek Kirk Kim, Dave McKean, Fábio Moon, Scott Mosier, Eric Powell, Stan Sakai, and on and on and on. Even better, for our purposes anyway, This Ink Runs Cold includes numerous comic book newcomers, including us - Brad and Lisa Gullickson! As of this writing, This Ink Runs Cold has one week left on Kickstarter. Scott Morse and Allen Spiegel Fine Arts offer two editions: the Full-Color version featuring José Villarrubia's wizardry and the limited Black and White Noir version, showcasing Scott Morse's beautiful brushwork. Having knocked out some stretch goals, those backing the Bookplate and Noir/1-2 Punch tiers will get an extra book, The Brush-Offs. This is a 24-page bonus book featuring unused art, abandoned pages, scripts, an alternate prologue/epilogue, and an analysis of this unique writer/artist collaboration. We're beyond honored to contribute one page to This Ink Runs Cold; we're practically in disbelief. Today's podcast is the first time we have featured a story we helped create, and it's an incredibly emotional experience. We're grateful to Scott Morse for coming on the show, explaining how This Ink Runs Cold grew from a mini-devastation, and why this intense injection of collaboration reinvigorated him. We also had the opportunity to explain what our short story "The ADHD P.I." means to us and how it helped us process some anxiety and self-loathing. Working with one page was ridiculously challenging, and what's most exciting is seeing how 88 other writers tackled that challenge and used that finite space in infinite ways. We also start this week's episode with our recent trip to WonderCon and an LAX nightmare we will never forget. If you're here only for the Scott Morse chatter, we won't begrudge you for skipping ahead, but you'll miss out on another outlandish story. This Week's Sponsors: You wake in a hospital bed. Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? is a 2021 graphic novel that pairs historical true crime author Harold Schechter and Eric Powell, writer and illustrator of the monster punch-up comic The Goon. Jack and Kate revisit the horrifying true tale of the Butcher of Plainfield–this time, in comic book style. What impact did this case have on pop culture, and why does it continue to fascinate us? How were the ‘90s a different country, and why did that country smell like grunge? Is the true crime genre Horrible Exploitation or Cool Exploitation? All these questions and more will be explored in this episode of the podcast. BBfBP theme song by True Creature. This week, we're talking comic book news and covering FOUR comics. Our topics include: The Thunderbolts Asterix, How lucky Marvel is to have casted Florence Pugh when they did, Bleeding Cools "Big Vague Article" claiming massive industry news is coming soon, a Joker graphic novel coming out featuring stories from around the globe, DC Elseworld reprints inbound, & X-Men books popping up in value due to X-Men 97 (cartoon) hype. For our comics, Feral is a cat based comic from the team who brought you the indie hit Stray Dogs, Morning Star is shaping up to be an eerie family thriller out on Mad Cave, Bad Girls 1 is kind of misleading as a first issue (You should view it as a Local Man Annual), and Eric Powell's Goon returns for a new four part mini-series called "Them That Don't Stay Dead".

In the latest episode of CBR's Dynamic Duos Podcast, Eric Powell and Becky Cloonan discuss their work in Dark Horse Comics' Four Gathered on Christmas Eve. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I'm super excited this week to welcome Eric Powell onto the show. As a huge fan of Hillbilly, I've wanted to have him on for quite some time. We're chatting about the launch of his new Victorian ghost story inspired anthology, Four Gathered On Christmas Eve, from Dark Horse Comics. Recruited for the project were Mike Mignola, Becky Cloonan, and James Harren so it's a creative powerhouse. When I was doing my background research, I came across a video Eric had posted of his grandfather, a harmonic player of some renown in the Nashville scene who contributed a special bit to the Roy Acuff version of The Wawbash Cannonball. You'll have to tune in to hear more about it but the link is below. Make sure to check it out. Onie Wheeler interview Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One of the most charming DJs in the business. A musical ambassador and a veteran of acid house, a champion of techno, a dance music pioneer, label owner, King of Ibiza – you name it, Carl's been there and done it, never losing sight of his passions – playing music, breaking tunes and celebrating life. **TRACKLIST** * How It Makes You Feel (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Nicole Moudaber * Speed Trials On Acid (feat. Dan Diamond) [LF SYSTEM Remix] (Extended Mix) - Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Dan Diamond * Get What You Paid 4 (Marco Bailey Remix) * Inferno (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Reinier Zonneveld, Christopher Coe * Nexus (Foamo Remix) * Nocturnal (Original Mix) - Carl Cox, Christopher Coe, Cox and Coe * The Player (Onionz Remix) * The Latin Theme Feat. Savanah Blount (Roel Salemink & Steve Mulder Remix) * Sentimento Latino (Ben Sims Remix) * Family Guy (Layo & Bushwacka! Remix) * Sand, Moon & Stars (Eats Everything Remix) * I Want You (Forever) (Tribute Mix) * PURE (Brennen Grey Remix) * Moroccan Chant (Rory Marshall Remix) It was at the age of 15 that Carl bought a set of turntables and began working as a mobile DJ. Disco was the first music that captivated him but by the early 80s Cox had moved on to playing the same music as other young London DJs – rare groove, New York hip-hop and electro. He was perfectly placed to hear Chicago house music in its earliest forms, and when the epic ‘Acid Trax' by Phuture (a.k.a. DJ Pierre) came out in early '87. “It was then that I thought, ‘This is it,' says Carl. “I would do my parties, and I'd play old rare groove and hip hop and soul and I would say ‘Right you've got to hear this Phuture track' and people would just stop and listen.” As a founder of the sound, Carl rode the exploding British rave scene. He played the opening night of Danny Rampling's legendary Shoom, co-promoted The Project with Paul Oakenfold, where he also DJ'd and did the sound system. He held a residency at the Zap Club in Brighton and at the Sunrise rave in 1988, hooked up a third turntable for his dawn-breaking set, got 15,000 people back on their feet, and established a personal rep for three-deck wizardry. The next step was to make music, and Carl's 1991 debut single for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label, ‘I Want You,' reached Number 23 in the national UK charts and gave Carl his first Top of the Pops appearance. Two more singles also made the charts. But Carl was a reluctant pop star and as the masses moved onto fluffy house and trance, and the hardcore created jungle, Cox retreated into the club world that had nurtured him, and instead embraced the underground sounds of techno. “Techno drives home somewhere,” he says of his core music. “It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you're going. It's scary but wonderful at the same time.” Carl's classic releases include his 1995 mix CD, ‘F.A.C.T,‘ which became a techno benchmark, selling over 250,000 copies, and the 1996 EP ‘Two Paintings and a Drum,‘ which again broke the British top 30. Alongside Carl's ‘Ultimate Music Management' company, which counted Josh Wink and Laurent Garnier among 27 clients, there was the Ultimatum record label, for which Carl recorded his third top 30 UK single, ‘Sensual Sophis-ti-cat.' In 2005, Carl's third album, ‘The Second Sign' caused a stir across Europe and reached number 3 in Spain's national chart. Also gaining critical acclaim was ‘Dirty Bass,' a collaboration with Christian Smith, and the funky ‘Give Me Your Love', both released on 23rd Century Records, an outlet for his own burgeoning production output. Carl formed his own label, Intec Records, in 1999, scoring a series of underground hits and enjoying eight years at the forefront of electronic music. After its closure in 2006, Carl was still inundated with new music, finally deciding to re-launch the label as Intec Digital in 2010, and it's been a triumphant return, thanks to exclusives from some of the biggest names in techno. Intec Digital was also the home for Carl's 6th studio album, ‘All Roads Lead To the Dancefloor,' released to critical acclaim in 2011. In 2013 Carl re-launched his seminal Pure Intec series, nine years after the hugely successful original ‘Pure Intec.' Pure Intec 3 followed in 2016 and this year sees the release of the 4th installment in the series – Pure Intec 4. “I've always been about nurturing artists and supporting new talent,” says Carl. “Sometimes a release gets missed, or overlooked. Pure Intec is a great way to collate the best of our output and celebrate it.” And of course Carl's name cannot be mentioned without Ibiza. His legendary Ibiza residency at Space came to an end in 2016, after an unbelievable 15 consecutive years. Since 2001 Carl helped establish Space as one of the biggest clubs in the world. With carefully thought out line ups, and as much emphasis on new talent as big names, Carl always strived to keep his night at the forefront of Ibiza clubbing making it one of the most successful residencies in Ibiza history. Starting out in 2001 with just 6 nights, his residency grew and adapted as the club did, so for Carl it was only right to end his residency as Space itself closed its doors. And what a way to go out. Carl's final 15 week season was his biggest ever, with every single night selling out, heralded by fans and critics alike as a triumphant finale to a piece of dance history. In summer 2018 Carl caused huge excitement, when it was announced he had joined forces with Space's founder Pepe Rosello, general manager Juan Arenas and Ibiza promoter Dave Browning and that together they were working on bringing back the legendary club to Ibiza. “Space club Ibiza has always been my home for the last 20 years,” said Carl. “To pave the new way for the future of Space is really exciting, and now forming a partnership with Pepe, Juan, and Dave Browning to run the newly-formed team, it feels solid in the way that we are a family team, and I feel we can bring everything back to where it belongs.” Those plans are still very much under way, although Carl admits their hands are tied currently in terms of opening a new club on the island. “There's a protocol in place beyond our control, but we still 100% want to do it and I'm confident it will happen. Until then we're concentrating on keeping the Space flag flying with some great events across the world.” These include an upcoming Steel Yard London Carl Cox Presents Space Ibiza, a special Space stage at Tomorrowland and various Studio 338 parties, with more Space events being planned. Ibiza is still priority for Carl, where he has returned to play every summer since Space's closure, carefully picking and choosing which nights he'll play. He now has his roaming club series ‘One Night Stand' which returns in summer 2019 with two nights at DC-10 and he's enjoying being back at Privilege Ibiza, as part of Resistance, acting as curator and headliner for another four parties this year. On top of that he'll be joining Nic Fanciulli for two nights at Ushuaia and playing Pacha's closing party with Marco Carola. In my early days of playing Ibiza it wasn't alien for me to play all the clubs,” says Carl. “I had the opportunity to do my own night at Space and define my sound in one club. It's now nice to be able to share the love with some of the other clubs.” Carl continues to be one of most in demand DJs in the world, with countless club dates and festival appearances every year. After 12 years delivering his Carl Cox & Friends stage at Ultra, Carl is now proud to be ambassador for the Resistance parties, for Ultra worldwide. He also now has his own concept party Pure – started with Richie McNeill and Eric Powell, and which turns five this year. Built on the idea of taking things back to basics, Carl put the music first and foremost for some no nonsense, no frills techno parties, which grows by the year, with this year's Pure events being the biggest to date. “Pure is my thing. I've nurtured it from day one, striving to bring the best purveyors of techno together to deliver it in its purest form, and it works.” On top of the Australian events, Carl has taken Pure to Ibiza and the UK, with further Pure events planned for New York, Montreal and Prague. Carl became an official partner of Babylon festival in Australia in 2018, a role he continued this year, helping curate the lineup, the event's ethos, and jumping onboard as Babylon's headline act. Carl also has a long history with Burning Man, having performed at the annual event in Black Rock City since 2008. Carl started his Playground camp as a way to celebrate all that Burning Man is and as a way to give back to a culture that he loves. It started small and most who landed in the camp that first year were those just passing by to get someplace else, but the music and vibe pulled them in. From that humble start it has steadily grown over the years and in a very organic way because the energy, music and people are what makes Playground so special. On top of all this Carl has also found the time to launch another label, Awesome Soundwave (ASW) with label partner, Christopher Coe, AKA Digital Primate. Launched in May 2018, the label is geared towards artists who make and perform their music live and has signed six artists so far. “My idea was to create a label where artists who can make and perform their music live, have a stable where they can be themselves and be able to create the music without any boundaries.” He is also still at the forefront of producing music himself. He now has his own state of the art studio in Australia which enables him to work production anytime he's not on the road. Carl's remix of Ninetoes ‘Finder,' went through the roof when released last year and he recently made his return to Circus Recordings for the menacing ‘Dark Alleys.' He's returned to the track that helped start it all back in 1987, remixing DJ Pierre's ‘Acid Track', for Pierre's upcoming 35 years of DJing celebration release. Elsewhere look out for Carl's masterful touch on remixes of Russell Small's ‘It Is What It Is,' Purple Disco Machine's ‘Body Funk' and a new mix of his own 2000 release ‘Dr Funk', out on Bush Records. And don't forget Carl's other major passion, his beloved motorsports. Having had a love of cars and motorbikes ever since he was a child, Carl has collected cars and bikes most of his life, with over 100 in his current collection. In 2013 Carl started Carl Cox Motorsport, which has quickly grown internationally with the incorporation of various teams and styles of motor racing. From the NZ & World road race Sidecar championships, The Ducati Tri-Options Cup in the UK, to the Post Classic motorcycles and V8 Drag racing in Australia, the teams continue to achieve amazing results with multiple lap records, race wins, championship placings and personal goals being reached. “To be able to utilize what I have learned from the marketing and brand side of my DJ career and to apply it to my passion for motor sport is a great thing. And it's already made a difference. I never thought the motor team would grow like this, it's been unbelievable. It's a huge passion for me and I'm dedicated to continue making it a success.” To those wondering how he finds the time for all of this, he says he's in his element, and just making the most of life and of the amazing opportunities he has. “There's still a lot more to come from me. There's still a lot more water in the well.”

Was it worth the wait?Yes, very much so.Will it be difficult to wait almost two months until issue #2 is released?Yes, if #1 is anything to go by, since George Mann, Eduardo Mello, Ornella Savarese, Studio RAM, Matt Dryer, Sanjay Dharawat, Stephen Reichert and Samantha Hummer have delivered a crackling debut issue that ties into The High Republic mythology with ease while creating an aura of suspense. In Yoda #4 (of 10), writer Jody Houser returns to the galaxy a long time ago, reteaming with artist Luke Ross for a three-issue arc that features Yoda in a story set before the Prequel Trilogy and featuring Jedi Master Dooku. THey're joined by color artist Nolan Woodard and letter Joe Caramagna of Virtual Caligraphy. It's a well-paced start that gives us more elements of the Count before his faith in the Jedi was lost and features a trio of young Padawans -- a togorian, wookiee and trandoshan -- that echoes Dooku's own relationship with SIfo-Dyas. Astute readers will recognize a key event in this issue from the pages of Age of Republic: Count Dooku #1. That issue has more emotional heft now. Finally, in Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) #29, Aphra finds herself in an unusual spot: Completely oblvious to the Spark's dire plans. The story by Alyssa Wong, artist Natacha Bustos, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg and letter Joe Caramagna, blends long-ago history with the effort by Chelli's friends to come to her rescue in a brisk story. We uncovered some lost audio from another discussion we had about Divided We Fall by David French, so we're releasing it a little belatedly as a part two! In this podcast Alex, Andrea, and Emily talk about how the community-wide read went, the challenges and benefits of leading book discussions, and how the library's Book Club is going. In spring and early summer, the Lodi Library handed out 200 free copies of Divided We Fall by David French and then had Daniel Kapust, a political science professor from UW-Madison, present at the library. Afterwards, the group had lunch together and discussed the book. Special thank you to Wisconsin Humanities and The Friends of Lodi Public Library for their support. Director Eric Powell explains what benefits are available to veterans and their families from the National Cemeteries Administration. Did you know that if you chose as a veteran, not to be buried in a National Cemetery that the VA will still provide a gravestone or appropriate marker for your internment in either a standard burial or in the case of cremation the columbarium? This is a program all in the family should listen to and keep as a resource for the future.
Composition by Eric Powell. "My goal in creating Please_wait was to embrace the theme of "obsolete sounds" on as many levels as possible. After selecting the sound of a Siemen's ventilator–a rather rattly, yet sustained sound, I decided to use that everyday whirr to create a lush, choral, drone-y piece. I felt the best way to do that was to combine the fan sound with some kind of chime or bell. I happened to have a couple salvaged rotary telephone bells (another obsolete sound) in my studio, and I composed the piece using a now-obsolete computer and software system–a circa 2007 iMac running Logic Pro 8 with a c.2005 Zoom H4 as the recording device/audio interface. Obsolescent sounds meet obsolescent technology. "Please_wait uses convolution reverb to play the sounds of the ventilator 'through' the sounds of the telephone bells. In addition to this process, I used a small amount of pitch shifting and amplitude control to shape the piece. However, I didn't edit or trim any of the recordings, as I wanted the piece to explore how the handling sounds (i.e. switching the technology on or off) found in both the source recordings, and my recordings of the telephone chimes--something I think many field recordists choose to remove from their files as 'unwanted' sounds, yet are in fact a big part of how we hear our recording technology--would interact in the convolution process. The end result is a little unsettling, I know. Part of my love for this piece comes in how the harmonics of the two telephone bells grind up against each other as they vibrate through the sound of the ventilator: drifting from tonal conflict, to resolution, and back again. "As a last step in embracing old or disappearing sounds, I bounced/rendered the piece out in .mp3 format before upconverting it into .wav. An intentional move to capture some of the unique lossy characteristics of a disappearing format." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Released 26 April 2022. Early in academic year 2018, a group of US Army War College faculty and students came together in pursuit of an integrated research project devoted to an examination of contested deployment and the growing realization the US homeland can no longer be considered an inviolable zone in preparing for war. Expecting free movement of forces in mobilization, movement to ports of embarkation, and deployment against the nation's adversaries is beneath reason. Two oceans and benevolent neighbors to the north and south can no longer be considered a significant buffer against internal and external enemies. Adversaries of the United States will seek to disrupt or disable the movement of its forces long before they can be placed in combat against foes overseas, and the nation must be prepared for this opposition. Today is awesome guys, we got to sit down and chat with the creator of The Goon himself, Eric Powell.
Eric Powell is a writer, artist, and creator of multiple award-winning graphic novels including Hillbilly, Chimichanga, and my favorite comic of all time, The Goon. I've been looking forward to speaking to Eric for a while. His work is sensational and mixes a potent combination of horror, pulp fiction, film noir, and fart jokes into fun & poignant stories with compelling characters and exceptionally beautiful artwork. When you read through a book from The Goon or from Hillbilly, you will marvel in awe at how Eric is able to not only write all of that wonderful dialogue but create all of this sophisticated and incredible art in every issue. If you haven't read The Goon or Hillbilly books yet, do yourself a favor and grab some of them on Amazon, I promise you won't be disappointed. Even if you don't consider yourself a graphic novel fan, just get some. Eric has been putting out The Goon for over twenty years and has been working on a film adaptation with David Fincher and Tim Miller for quite some time. You can see the very exciting proof of concept on Kickstarter. When you observe the volume of Eric's creative output, it's pretty incredible and inspiring, I had to know how he did it. We get into this as well as comics, creative theory, writing processes and so much more, on this very fun episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show. Now please welcome, Eric Powell. ----- Produced by Simpler Media

On this episode of The Comics Alternative, Derek and Andy celebrate their 200th regular review episode! They begin by sharing some of the messages and well wishes they've received from listeners in the past couple of weeks. After that, they get into a discussion of this week's review titles. They begin with Eric Powell's new series, Hillbilly (Albatross Funnybooks), the second issue of which was just released last week. The guys focus on Powell's use of folktale tropes and storytelling techniques, pointing out that this title reads more somberly than does The Goon and Billy the Kid's Old Timey Oddities (at least so far), although it does have its humorous moments. Albeit subtle. Much more in-your-face is Satan's Sodomy Baby #2 -- branded as SSBII for "safer" consumption -- Powell's other Albatross Funnybooks publication. This is a follow up to the 2007 one-shot Satan's Sodomy Baby, and like the earlier issue this comic book will not be reprinted nor will it be released digitally. And, appropriately enough, it comes in a sealed bag and parental advisory warning, so as to avoid any immature hands. While this issue of Satan's Sodomy Baby isn't as scatological as the first, it's over-the-top in an entirely different way. Current politics is what drives this story, and Donald J. Trump is the butt (pun intended) of Powell's scathing satire, small hands and all. The Two Guys wrap up this week's episode with a look at Leslie Stein's Time Clock: An Eye of the Majestic Creature Book (Fantagraphics). Very different from last year's Bright-Eyed at Midnight, this book is a follow up to Stein's other Eye of the Majestic Creature releases from 2011 and 2013. Andy and Derek discuss the the phantasmagorical stories that make up the text, wondering if the protagonist's life events -- e.g., her sand counting and the relationship with her anthropomorphic guitar friend, Marshmallow -- may have any allegorical connections to Stein's own life. But what drives the narrative is Stein's seemingly mundane observations, clothed in the fantastic, and especially her art style, a curious mixture of cartoon and creepy.
