Welcome back! Today's guest is Jonny Pelham! Jonny is a brilliant and hilarious stand-up comedian with an amazing story. Also we recorded this back in 2022 so some of our references are not as recent as we're saying haha. Hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Trigger warning: Discussion of child sexual abuse.Jonny Pelham has become one of the most disarmingly hilarious comics in the UK by building his punchlines on a bedrock of unflinching honesty. There's a big difference between the comedy cliche of “saying the unsayable”, and being able to find the humanity and authenticity in a subject that people don't want to talk about. We talk about his new Edinburgh Fringe show “Optimism Over Despair”, and he leads us through the experience at that show's core: his reflections over using his set on Live At The Apollo to discuss the sexual abuse he experienced as a child. We also learn about his clinical “maladaptive daydreaming”, and what it's like to always come with a trigger warning.20mins of *double trigger-warning* extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Jonny on a joke that he's always found too dark to make work, but which says something very important about his experiences; how he makes the personal political; and how to make biographical work what you want it to be in the face of algorithmic soup!Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for ad-free episodes, extra content from every show that has it, and much more - including exclusive Insiders Q&As plus the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.Catch up with Jonny:https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jonny-pelham-optimism-over-despairwww.jonnypelham.comTW/IG: @jonny_pelhamEverything Stu's up to:Stu's new Edfringe show “Spoilers” (WINNER Best Show 2023, Leicester Comedy Festival, woo!) is ON SALE NOW atwww.stuartgoldsmith.com/ticketsAnd find preview dates as well as podcast community links, social media handles and comedy clips, and Stu's official YouTube channel, all at linktr.ee/stuartgoldsmithOr join the mailing list for unspecified freebies at:www.comedianscomedian.comwww.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“There's perfect and there's perfect; and that was perfect.” David Cooper, Chief People Officer Circle Health Group Hosted on Acast. Barnstorming breakthrough-in-waiting, Sean McLoughlin is extremely adept at big chunky stand-up with an interesting moral core. We outline his journey from an angry young man who either needed “a hug or a slap”, through the transformative effects of both being onstage and getting proper therapy, to a towering performer with gigs at the Palladium, Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall under his belt. We also discover his conscious effort to maintain eye contact; how he became more reliable to bookers; and whether tall people come across as angry when they're just animated…25 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club includes Sean's reaction to sharing a name with one of the most famous people on the internet; and advice for comics starting tour support, which Sean has done at the highest level, from Sydney Opera House to the Royal Albert Hall, in service of comics like Bill Burr, Katherine Ryan and Ricky Gervais.Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for ad-free episodes, extra content from every show that has it, and much more - including the exclusive Insiders Q&As with Nish Kumar, Alfie Brown, James Acaster and Fern Brady, plus the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.Catch up with Sean McLoughlin:Edinburgh Fringe: Pleasance Beneath, 19:55https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/sean-mcloughlin-so-be-itPodcast “Failing Better” with Jonny Pelham: @failingpodwww.seanmcloughlincomedy.comTW: @seanmcloughlinIG: @seanmcloughlincomedyEverything Stu's up to:Edinburgh Fringe: Monkey Barrel, 13:25 (4-11th only) https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/stuart-goldsmith-a-shared-illusion-wipThis podcast is @ComComPod on Twitterwww.comedianscomedian.comIG and Tik: @stuartgoldsmithcomedyFind out everything Stu's up to at www.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“There's perfect and there's perfect; and that was perfect.” David Cooper, Chief People Officer Circle Health Group See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We've got halfway through the number one albums of 1993 and have come across this beast which was at the top spot for seven weeks that summer. Is that because it's totally amazing and the British public were right to keep on buying it? Or is it because they did an Elvis cover that was lightweight enough to get on the radio constantly? It's a mystery. Thankfully alongside having to discuss this record we get to talk about other acts such as Clutch, Cypress Hill and, er, Snow. We'd also like to take the opportunity to plug some of our previous podcast guests who have new podcasts out themselves at the minute: Sean Mcloughlin who joined us for our ABBA special has a new one up and running with fellow comedian Jonny Pelham called Failing Better and their guest on the current episode is Ed Gamble; and Rob Mulholland who joined us for our Hip Hop in 1991 special is going great guns with his new podcast Dead Men Talking alongside co-host Freddy Quinne (warning - this one is not for the easily offended). So do go and check them out if they sound up your street.
Here's an episode for all the lonely ladies out there as we are joined by the magnificent Sophie Willan, creator and star of the BAFTA-winning 'Alma's Not Normal'. Sophie is probably best known for being Jonny's girlfriend and in this episode we explore how she was able to nab the perfect man and how she maintains a relationship with such a hunk. Your single days are over. Also Jonny is back on the drugs and Sean has a crush on his dentist. In what can only be described as a deeply unhinged conversation our intrepid co-hosts tackle Rudyard Kipling's brilliant but also damaging poem 'If'. In this episode Jonny and Sean tackle the thorny issue of how to start your day by reading The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. Also we deal with Sean's fear of Slipknot, more celebrity fans and a shocking new book that Jonny is writing. In this episode Sean reads the popular/damaging financial self-help book 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' by obvious liar Robert Kiyoski. However, most of the episode is dominated by an astonishing development involving Jonny and a platinum-selling band that may alter the podcast forever. It's episode two of the podcast and already we're hitting the skids. Jonny introduces Sean to his favourite self-help book '7 Habits For Highly Effective People' by Stephen R. Covey, but not before a wild chat about charity work and the age-old debate of humans versus birds. In our first double header, Amy speaks to Jonny Pelham and Sophie Willan! Lovely chap Jonny Pelham (Live at the Apollo, BBC One) drops in to chat being boring, drinking mulled wine in bed and colonialism! A Lovely Time was hosted by Amy Gledhill (www.amygledhill.co.uk). Jonny Pelham is an award winning comedian, probably best known as one third of the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe show 'Pretty on the Inside' with Si Buglass and the much better headline act of that show Lee Kyle. Hi, I'm Lee, I'm doing a podcast every day of the fringe where I play a professor with a life that is going wrong and asks questions of a comedian to see if they can go to Oxbridge University. Today's guest is Jonny Pelham from Pretty on the Inside. Like this for some reason? Subscribe to 'which is the best' wherever you get podcasts unless it's not on that one.
I'm doing this podcast (The Oxbridge Entrance Exam) every day of the fringe. It's good and shit. I'm sat opposite Jonny Pelham right now and he's just won an award. I'm also with Neil Harris but he had a bad show today so he can fuck right off. Today's guest is Rob Mulholland who has received 5 stars from Mumble this fringe. I'm Lee by the way. Hiya.

After the mania of the three Edinburgh Fringe episodes things return to normal as we have a delightful chat with the useless comedian Jonny Pelham. We talk about what it's like having fleas, Sean and Eliot's political past and an outrageous new catchphrase is born. This is a mellow episode and that's fine with me.
Jonny has fallen in love, ‘completed’ therapy, written a very good joke about Taylor Swift and much to his own surprise feels… happy. Enjoy 15 minutes of stand up and chat with the talented, intelligent, slightly dark, and very funny comedian. ‘Jonny Pelham: Just Shout Louder’ is appearing as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jonny-pelham-just-shout-louder Twitter: @jonnypelham22 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonathan.pelham.3 Comedy performance provided by the artist for promotional purposes. As we near the end of the Fringe, host Gareth K Vile welcomes two guests whose plays have melded hot button social and political subjects of the day with humour, playfulness and a dash of punk. Writer Afsaneh Gray's satire, Octopus, tackles what it means to be British. Set in dystopia alt-world where three women prepare for the state to determine how Brit they really are, Octopus challenges false visions of a homogenous native culture. In part three, fellow dramaturg Dr Kasia Lech talks about her solo show Bubble Revolution, which confronts some of the challenges Poland and its' migrants have experienced transitioning from communist bloc to western state. And Gareth confronts his comedy shortcomings again as List comedy reviewer Murray Robertson shares his Fringe picks.Show notes00:00:32 – Afsaneh Gray (Octopus)00:13:47 – Music from Stop the Train00:15:31 – Murray Robertson Fringe picks: Zoe Coombs Marr, Pete Firman, John Luke Roberts, Jonny Pelham, Joe DeRosa00:20:23 – Kasia Lech (Bubble Revolution)00:33:11 – Credits and thanksCredits:At the Fringe is co-created by Gareth K Vile (host) and Annie Kolemen (producer).
