Can you believe that for half a century student bars the length and breadth of the land have resounded to the excruciating cries of "Nii!"? Yes, the film the Spanish call 'The Knights of the Square Table and Their Crazy Followers' turns 50 and to mark the occasion here's a bonus episode with Tyler and writer, podcaster & performer Tom Salinsky in which they talk at length about the film. Tom thinks that Life of Brian has more to say but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the most consistently funny of their films, with barely a moment left gagless, from the inspired opening titles to the demonic camp of Tim the Enchanter. They discuss highlights such as the cartoonish violence of the King Arthur vs Black Knight sequence; Brave Sir Robin and his minstrel Neil Innes; Gilliam the gatekeeper of the Bridge of Death (later rented out to William Friedkin for Sorcerer?); Dennis the mud-ridden firebrand decrying systems of government; Carole Cleveland as Zoot, Mistress of Castle Anthrax; the weakly insipid Prince Herbert and his overbearing dad; the witch trial; Brother Maynard and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and, of course, Frank the TV historian who suffers a violent slaying.Tom also talks of his love for the LP and compares the film to the script book – whither Brian the Wild from the final cut? – and reveals that parts of the original script were later repurposed for the fourth series of Monty Python. He also touches on Spamalot and springing from that there's an interesting overview of the recent Dr Strangelove production starring Steve Coogan. Also: the coconuts for horses gag – A Show Called Fred got there first! So that ticks the box marked 'Goon Content'!Tom is co-host of Best Pick podcast: https://bestpickpod.com/

Tom Salinsky wrote the book on Red Dwarf. Two books, actually. We tap into his awesome knowledge - from the show's alternative comedy roots, to a fascinating idea Grant and Naylor had for the pilot episode, which would have been very different… and very legendary. Tom also gives us the last word on continuity (who are we kidding?). We discuss Tom's five star ratings… and Fergus judges Tom's take on Justice. Speaking of judgement, we go to town on series 5 episode 2, The Inquisitor (in a good way). Tom talks sitcom pinball, comedy versus philosophy, and capitalism. We also explore the Inquisitor himself - from the unusual casting, to voice choices, and the character's evolving methods. Plus: more Trojan Horse theories than you might expect. Tom Salinsky and John Dorney and from Best Pick podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Matilda the Musical. Matilda the Musical (2022) is a musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel based on the stage musical by Tim Minchin. It is directed by Matthew (Pride) Warchus and stars Alisha Weir as Matilda alongside Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr and Mrs Wormwood and Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Matilda the Musical follows the same story as the classic novel. Forever the disappointment of her family for not being born a boy, Matilda finds joy and escapism in reading. When it is discovered she has never been to school she is sent to Crunchem Hall. While at school she impresses the shy Miss Honey and irritates the angry and violent Miss Trunchbull with her precocious talents. Where it differs from the novel is the sub plot of an escapologist who falls in love with and marries an acrobat that is reoccurring. Is Matilda the best musical film of the last 20 years? It is according to Tom! Helen was less convinced, the addition of the unnecessary acrobat plot takes away from the original magic of the book and makes it a two hour film. While recommendability was pretty high its two hour runtime meant lower repeat and engagement scores, to give an overall rating of 4.16. This week, Tom Salinsky joins us for a World War III–adjacent chat in Madeupistan, while a global apocalypse is self-organising somewhere in Yorkshire. Also, some scary people keep trying to invite us to a free Bible study. It's The Pyramid at the End of the World. Notes and links Brendan compares Extremis to Star Trek: Voyager's Course: Oblivion, which also kills its entire regular cast. Nathan and Joe were not kind to this episode when they watched if for Untitled Star Trek Project. Tom refers to his own less-than-enthusiastic review of Extremis in a blog post from way back in 2017. Joe 90 was a Gerry and Sylvia Anderson supermarionation show from 1968–69, which stars a nine-year-old super spy who wears special glasses which contain the brain patterns of expert adults and enable him to do all of his spy stuff. James refers to Star Trek: The Next Generation's Commander William T Riker as someone who, like the monks, has a real fetish for consent. This deep cut is a reference to the Star Trek podcast The Greatest Generation, which you are only allowed to listen to after you've finished all of Untitled Star Trek Project. The Andromeda Strain is a 1969 book by Michael Crichton and a 1971 film directed by Robert Wise (The Sound of Music, Star Trek: The Motion Picture). In it, an extraterrestrial microbe gets loose in a research station and the staff need to prevent the station's nuclear self-destruct system from releasing an irradiated version of the the microbe into the environment. The Tralfamadorians are time-aware aliens who appear in a couple of Kurt Vonnegut's novels, most notably Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). At the time that this episode was released, the Doomsday Clock was at 90 seconds to midnight, mostly thanks to the climate disaster and the involvement of nuclear powers in wars in Ukraine and Gaza. So sleep well, everyone. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Brendan and Bjay's gaming podcast The Bjay BJ Game Show has just released a new episode today, in which they discuss Lost in Play (2022), a point-and-click adventure set in the imagination of two young children. Brendan, Richard and Steven have also just released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. It's the first episode of their triptych The Pop Explosion, covering a monochrome Emma Peel episode called Death at Bargain Prices, in which Steed and Mrs Peel go undercover in a London department store and discover a plot to blow up much of the city. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we laughed and clapped as the crew of the USS Protostar saved the Federation in the two-part Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Prodigy.
You may remember that Rob and Guy covered Peter Cook in quite some detail in our episode on the Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer with our guest, Tom Salinsky of Best Pick Pod. Well, now we are talking about Cook & Moore as a duo, focusing mainly on Not Only But Also and, of course, our film for this week, Bedazzled. Rather neatly, another host of Best Pick joins us for the 1967 Faustian adaptation. John Dorney gets involved with our Pete & Dud-centric episode. Bedazzled, also starring Eleanor Bron, Raquel Welch, and Barry Humphries, is the first film we have covered on Britcom Goes to the Movies, which has a Hollywood remake. Much as the idea of a Tom Cruise-starring remake of On The Buses would excite us, it simply doesn't exist! To Rob and Guy's shame, they didn't watch the remake, but luckily our guest did and was more than happy to fill us in on that as well. Tom Salinksy and Jess Regan (the other two presenters of Best Pick) had chosen movies that shot straight to number one on our League table (although neither Michael Rimmer nor Sightseers stayed there), so could John continue this trend? Could Guy eat into Rob's quiz lead with John's questions on Cook & Moore? Find out by listening to episode 3! This week on the Anglotopia Podcast, we interview author and podcaster Tom Salinsky and explore his new book Red Dwarf: Discovering the TV Series, a deep dive into the beloved British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. Tom discusses his inspiration for the book, covering every episode, and how the BBC’s skepticism of sci-fi made Red Dwarf an underdog that grew into a cult classic. The interview touches on the show’s humor, its influence on British TV, and the challenges of chronicling decades of content, from broadcast to remastered versions. Join us for a fun discussion about British TV comedy and science fiction. Links Red Dwarf: Discovering the TV Series: Volume I: 1988-1993 Red Dwarf on BritBox Tom Salinsky The Best Pick Movie Podcast Takeaways Origins of Red Dwarf: The BBC was hesitant about a sci-fi sitcom, but Red Dwarf emerged due to a quirk in budget allocation, allowing it to become a cult hit despite early obstacles. Unique Format: The series capitalized on the British sitcom format, combining science fiction with the traditional “two men who hate each other but can’t leave” dynamic, popular in shows like Porridge. Character Chemistry: The show’s enduring appeal lies in the chemistry between the characters, especially Lister and Rimmer, whose opposing personalities anchor the narrative. Cultural Legacy: Red Dwarf influenced later sci-fi comedies, despite the BBC’s general disdain for the genre. Its longevity and ability to adapt over decades have cemented its place in British television history. Behind-the-Scenes Insights: Tom's research uncovered original ratings, unbroadcast scenes, and unused scripts that reveal new aspects of the show's creation. Sound Bites On Red Dwarf's Origins: “Red Dwarf almost didn't happen—it snuck past the BBC's deep suspicion of science fiction, thanks to a bizarre quirk in their accounting.” On the Show's Characters: “You've got two losers—one content with his lot, one frustrated and hating himself—and that dynamic has kept the show fresh through 70 episodes.” On Revisiting Every Episode: “For the first episode, I watched the broadcast version, remastered version, DVD extras, and multiple commentaries… I think I know that episode pretty well by now.” On the Show's Longevity: “The consistency of the cast is one of the things that's kept Red Dwarf going. By the Old Gods and new, this is a very strange thing - to be delighted to be back in Westeros, but still so sad our wonderful friend and bloodrider Stuart Layt isn't here to lead the way with his booming laugh and unparalled knowledge of all things House of the Dragon. While of course Stu is irreplaceable, it's wonderful to welcome podcast regular Tom Salinsky onboard to help steer the dragon through Season 2 of HotD. There's lots to chew over in this first instalment, including the return (briefly) of the Starks, Alicent and Cristan Cole-dancing, Rhaenyra's grief, Aegon's magnanimity, and a terrible crime to wrap it all up.
John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick podcast join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Nyad. Nyad (2023) is a biographical sports drama based on swimmer Diana Nyad's life and her book Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman's Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream. It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Everyone was in agreement that it is also a good film to watch while doing a task, so not particularly high on engagement, which gives an overall score of 2.70. The 2006 Mel Gibson movie, Apocalypto, takes us into a decadent Maya civilization in the Yucatan on the eve of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. It could be a commentary on ancient Rome or the present-day US, but, because it is a new world for both the viewer and the forest-dwelling protagonists, we get to see it through ‘new eyes' and a ‘beginner's mind.' It's a great movie, a cinematic masterpiece. It also allows us to ask how Mel Gibson, a devout Catholic and such a human sinner—as we all are, though when he does something terrible it's in the news—should proclaim the Gospel after he has fallen from his moral pedestal a few times. We also ask about how the Church should proceed given her many painful scandals. It was a great discussion on the Missio Dei podcast on YouTube and I'm delighted to share it here. No, you can't. They've been there for millions of years, through storms and floods and wars and time. Nobody really understands where the music comes from. It's probably something to do with the precise positions, the distance between both towers. Even the locals aren't sure. All anyone will ever tell you is that when the wind stands fair and the night is perfect, when you least expect it but always when you need it the most… there is a Song. This week, the Doctor and River live happily ever after, and Jack Shanahan joins us to discuss The Husbands of River Song. Notes and links Brendan mentions that this story was recorded after Alex Kingston started working with Big Finish on her long-running series The Diary of River Song. In fact, the first volume of that series is, like The Husbands of River Song, released in December 2015. We get our first sight of Peter Capaldi's wedding ring on 4 August 2013, during a close-up of his right hand in Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, the thirty-minute live broadcast in which Peter Capaldi is unveiled to the world as the Twelfth Doctor. Night and the Doctor is a series of five minisodes released on the Blu-ray box set of Series 6 — Bad Night, Good Night, First Night, and the completely unrelated Up All Night. In Last Night, the Doctor runs into a future version of himself, with a new haircut and a suit, about to take River to their last date on the planet Darillium. Speaking of Moffat recycling his own ideas, Sally Sparrow is first featured in a short story in the 2006 Doctor Who Annual called What I Did on My Christmas Holidays by Sally Sparrow, in which Sally receives messages from the Ninth Doctor, who is trapped without the TARDIS in 1985. Here's a link to the story itself. Jack mentions that he has just recorded an episode of A Hamster with a Blunt Penknife with Joe Ford in which they watched Wild Blue Yonder. And more Our new podcast, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire, is your number-one source for our ill-considered takes on the Second RTD Era. From Skaro to Gallifrey, twelve episodes of one of the strangest seasons in Doctor Who's history. What did we think, what did we learn, and what are we most looking forward to? And, as always, who would we snog, marry or avoid? Notes and links Thanks to Bob Gilbey (@bobgilbey), Bryan says… (@bryan1981) and DJ Alpha-T (@DJ_AlphaT) for contributing their questions to this episode. As we well know, an anthology of short stories about the life of Ashildr was indeed published in 2015. It was called Doctor Who: Legends of Ashildr, and it includes stories by Justin Richards and James Goss. In the shownotes for last week's episode we discussed the fact that Heaven Sent was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2016, Doctor Who didn't receive any awards at all for its 2015 season. And, since we properly failed to mention it (or even remember it, you might say with some justification), the Jenny Laird Award goes to a season or era's most puzzling creative choice, and the Bonnie Langford goes to someone or something that is surprisingly and delightfully good. And more Our new podcast, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire, is your number-one source for our ill-considered opinions on the Second RTD Era. Kittens! This is WEIRD. It is WEIRD to podcast without the genius that is Stuart Layt. WEIRD, and NOT RIGHT. Sadly Stu passed away three months ago, and boy am I still mad about it. Particularly since he LOVED Doctor Who with his whole soul. But I am so glad that Tom Salinsky from the brilliant Best Pick Pod reached out about joining forces to recap the David Tennant 60th anniversary specials. And so here it is - Who's Raven On with Tom and John from the Best Pick Pod, chatting all things Star Beast. This same podcast will appear on their feed (albeit with a different top and tail!). I hope you enjoy it. Much love, wonderful listeners.
Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) and Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Rob's choice The Stranger. The Stranger is a 2022 psychological crime thriller film, written and directed by Thomas M. Wright it is based on the non-fiction book The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe's Killer by Kate Kyriacou. It stars Sean Harris as Henry Teague, the lead police suspect in the disappearance and murder of a young boy. Joel Edgerton is undercover police officer ‘Mark Frame', who under the guise of being part of the criminal underworld gains the trust of Henry that will hopefully help them secure a confession. The Stranger is a text book example of a slow burn. It eschews a more traditional storytelling approach taken by undercover cop dramas and focusses on the internal conflict of those who go undercover and the complexities of male bonding. It's slightly unconventional approach and intense viewing experience meant it was tricky to score highly on recommendability, which isn't to say it isn't very good, just that it isn't a casual watch. Scores across the remaining categories bring the overall rating to a very respectable 3.58. Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) and Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy, directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson. Loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, this version reimagines the story of Pinocchio, set in fascist Italy between World War I and II. It won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Geppetto (David Bradley) is a woodcarver who tragically loses his beloved son Carlo, who is killed during a bombing raid. He carves a wooden boy which The Wood Sprite (Tilda Swinton) brings to life and assigns Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) to teach and guide him. Geppetto is initially terrified by Pinocchio and then frustrated by his antics and is forced to send him to school. But on the way he is tricked by Count Volpe (Christoph Waltz) and his monkey Spazzatura (Cate Blanchett) and ends up in their circus. Not surprising then that Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio shares many visuals and themes found in his other works like The Devils Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth. The stop-motion is unbelievably detailed and clearly a labour of love. Scores for recommendability were mixed, Pinocchio looks beautiful but some of the songs don't land and it is on occasion too terrifying and sad to be a children's film, however it still manages to score a very respectable 3.33 overall. The stars are Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and despite seven Oscar nominations it was somewhat of a box office disappointment, but it developed a second lease of life on VHS and subsequently on DVD, and it has a permanent position at the top of the IMDb top 250. https://twitter.com/natluurtsema https://www.amazon.co.uk/Books-Nat-Luurtsema/s?rh=n%3A266239%2Cp_27%3ANat+Luurtsema https://www.avclub.com/read-this-a-darkly-comedic-seinfeld-spec-script-set-da-1798250195 BEST PICK – the book is out now from all the usual places, including… From the publisher https://tinyurl.com/best-pick-book-rowman UK Amazon https://amzn.to/3zFNATI US Amazon https://www.amzn.com/1538163101 UK bookstore https://www.waterstones.com/book/9781538163108 US bookstore https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/best-pick-john-dorney/1139956434 Audio book https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Best-Pick-Audiobook/B09SBMX1V4 To send in your questions, comments, thoughts and ideas, you can join our Facebook group, Tweet us on @bestpickpod or email us on bestpickpod@gmail.com.
