"Dublin Trilogy" novelist and former comedian Caimh (CK) McDonnell shares his sitcom set aboard a ferry, a pre-Fleabag Fleabag and a comedy about what happens when multiple timelines meet. Offcuts performed by: Jake Yapp, Darrell Maclaine, Kenny Blyth, Lizzie Roper, David Monteith and Rachel Atkins. This episode contains strong language. Caimh McDonnell is the internationally bestselling author of the Dublin Trilogy which is set in his hometown. His debut novel 'A Man with One of Those Faces' – a darkly comedic crime thriller – was published in 2016 and nominated for best novel at the 2017 CAP awards. It went on to spawn the increasingly uncountable Dublin Trilogy (five books and counting) and the McGarry Stateside series, which have been translated into several different languages and optioned for television. He also writes ‘The Stranger Times' series of books under the name of C.K. McDonnell which has been described as "a celebration of how truth really can be stranger than fiction" The former professional stand-up comedian and TV writer has performed all around the world, had several well-received Edinburgh shows and supported acts such as Sarah Millican and Gary Delaney on tour before hanging up his clowning shoes to concentrate on writing. His TV writing work has seen him work on some of the biggest topical comedy shows on British TV and has earned him a BAFTA nomination. This week, Caimh McDonnell, author of the best-selling Dublin Trilogy, the McGarry Stateside books and Stranger Times joined Jarlath for a conversation about how rejection paced the way for his success. Caimh opens up about his journey to self-publishing success including the doors that were slammed for the most ridiculous of reasons. We hear how the motivation to move to London struck him when he realised how fast his life was passing away in Dublin without very much happening. Jarlath finds out about the “not in front of people I know” route into standup, the successful TV writing career he built and how he chose to end it. The friendship with Gary Delaney that changed everything for him, the buzz of getting his work optioned for TV, the exciting bidding war which ensued and much more, this is a thoroughly heart-warming conversation with one of Ireland's true creative writing talents. Today you'll be hearing a belter of a podcast with Irish stand-up comedian and author, Caimh McDonnell. This is a long one as tends to happen when you get two Irish lads on the phone together, clocking it at nearly an hour. I had a great time talking to Caimh, his stand-up is fantastic, he's got a great talents for telling hilarious stories and being spontaneous with the crowd as well. We spoke about how his show has changed over the years, how he has honed his comedic talents while writing for other comedians and performers thanks to his time writing for a multitude of British TV panel shows. We also chatted about his first book "A Man with One of Those Faces" and how it came about. We spoke about his recent Edinburgh Show "Bride and Prejudice" and his experiences with racism. Rugby gets a mention, Caimh is the stadium announcer for London Irish, as does football, former Irish manager Giovanni Trapattoni gets a mention when Caimh asked him what happened when Nigeria scored a goal against Ireland. We also spoke about the podcast he puts out with British stand-up comedian Gary Delaney called Panel Beaters, a panel show where the losers die as the game progresses. We spoke too about Pet Squad.....Dodge the beagle, Sheeba the tabby cat and Bingo the guinea pig - three domestic pets who lead a thrilling double life as unlikely superheroes....a CBBC cartoon Caimh wrote many moons ago. As I said, this interview is a long one but it was fascinating to speak to someone who is still totally in love with comedy and who is a successful stand-up, comedy writer and author
Welcome to the third BONUS episode. This time Alex grabbed Mock the Week regular and joke writing machine Gary Delaney to talk about how he got his start in comedy, giving up and then coming back a stronger comic, and some great advice about the discipline needed to be a successful comedian.

Although he's frequently referred to as a "philosophical" or "stoner" comic, Tom Stade is actually a Level Twenty Comedian. He waxes lyrical about striving for wisdom in his writing, rather than cleverness, and why he focuses on the internal not the external. We also talk about videotaping yourself to dissolve the delusion that an audio-recording of your act affords, acting like a star, and why Tom's a dangerous person to have on TV... Punchline virtuoso Gary Delaney knows one-liners inside and out, and in this crackling live episode treats us to a comprehensive technical analysis of his art. Taking grammar, rhythm, emphasis and narrative into account, he unpacks specific examples of his gags in forensic detail. Gary fiercely defends the value of hard work over talent, and also finds time to cry hacky, spunky tears... Ed Byrne hosts the first of our Secret Comedy Podcasts recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival with Jenny Éclair telling us how she got fired from Loose Women, Ben Van de Velde starts a joke chain letter to Putin and Marcus Brigstocke tells us a secret about how he told Elton John not to play the piano in his own house. Plus we've got stand up from the amazing Aisling Bea, a memory palace from the master of the one-liners Gary Delaney and David O'Doherty with an inspiring (and factually accurate) song about a man having a wank on a bike. Yep a bike. Nuff said. If you have enjoyed this podcast please chip in a few quid to help support our work. Make a donation at amnesty.org.uk/chipin
May 5th 2013 - James O'Brien talks to Alex Andreou, Lee Camp, Gary Delaney and Nat Luurtsema about the nutty fruitcakes of British politics, and UKIP as well; how Barack Obama wishes he could find someone in America with enough authority to close Guantanamo, and a tasteful exploration of media stars' sexual predations. Not something you'd get from the BBC - except in the dressing rooms of course. With old-school(tie) rapping straight outta Hampstead from Mr Dave Cohen. Soliloquent interludes courtesy of Messrs Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell.
