POPULARITY
The history of Basketball begins in the unassuming town of Springfield, Massachusetts. Canadian born James Naismith is trying to keep his group of students at the YMCA busy during a cold New England winter. It took 2 peach baskets, a soccer ball, and a few simple rules to create the game of basketball... sort of. The first thing Naismith created was chaos. Eventually, out of the chaos came basketball. The popularity of the game spread much like other sports. Barnstorming teams like the New York Rens and the world famous Harlem Globetrotters popularized the game in small towns all over the country. On a professional level some leagues came and went, but eventually found their way to the NBA and ABA merger. These two leagues would form the modern NBA today. There is so much more to the story though. Don't miss a second as we get Historically High on Basketball and the NBASupport the show

Babe Ruth is probably the biggest cultural figure of the 20th century. Nearly 100 years after his death, his name remains relevant. In 1922, after losing the World Series to the cross bridge rival NY Giants, Babe Ruth and Bob Muesel departed for a barnstorming tour of the Mid West. Tim Grover, a Mid West kid from Iowa took to this story and wrote a book about Bob and Babe's tour. The story is full of early 20th century greatness. Pete A Turner welcomes Tim Grover to the Break It Down Show. Get Tim's book Barnstorming Babe: A Slugger's Bumpy Trek Across Small-Town America on Amazon at amzn.to/4gGvOEt Babe Ruth could be his own worst enemy. After the 1921 World Series, the Bambino and teammate Bob Meusel began a barnstorming tour in the Northeast. The new baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, had warned them against doing it, citing a ridiculous and seldom-enforced rule. Greed overruled logic, and they did it anyway. Landis responded by suspending both players for the first six weeks of the 1922 season. A year later, Landis had waived the rule. And after losing the World Series in 1922, Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel left the harsh glare of New York for an eighteen-game Great Plains barnstorming tour. Stops included Omaha, Kansas City, and Denver. But also Sleepy Eye, Pratt, and Tarkio. They played in sleet, rain, and snow, traveled overnight on “jerkwater” railroads, and tolerated endless civic celebrations. They hit monstrous home runs, played against formidable Negro Leaguers, and faced some great small-town pitchers. They also visited orphanages, raised money for the American Legion, and created lifelong memories for hardscrabble farmers who would have never otherwise had a chance to see a major league baseball player. The adventure kicked off with a spitball in Perry, Iowa, on Friday the thirteenth…
Barnstorming across a segregated United States from 1908-1940, pitcher John Donaldson won over 400 games and collected over 5,000 strikeouts, but his baseball career became lost in history until historian Pete Gorton came to the rescue. Chuck Garfien speaks with Gorton who has spent the last 20 years uncovering Donaldson's extraordinary career. Donaldson later became the first official black scout in the majors with the White Sox, scouting Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks. He's up for induction into the baseball Hall of Fame in December.

Before there were leagues in baseball, there was barnstorming, and as major league baseball expanded, with its rules, revenue, and discrimination, barnstorming remained to remind players and fans what baseball was, when stripped down to nothing but the game.

The Battle of Britain is at its height. Spitfires and Hurricanes urgently need to get from the factories to the airfields and into the hands of ‘the Few'. Step forward Pauline Gower, a pioneering pilot of the 1930s, who alongside the 168 women who she brought into the Air Transport Auxiliary, would help ferry over 300,000 planes from where they were built to where they were needed. Tune in to hear Pauline's story as Oswin and Carla are joined – buckled up inside a Dakota troop carrier – by Jo Rogers, AKA instagram's magnificent @that.spitfire.bird. It's a tale of bravery, tragedy, grit and sheer bloody-minded determination in the face of slack-jawed armchair generals. There are appearances from the great Amy Johnson and Jacqueline Cochran, so strap in and prepare to be inspired.

During the barnstorming days of basketball (1920s-1940s), it was crucial that a team stand out. While one way was just to dominate all competition, another was to showcase a particular aspect that was unique to the team. In a similar fashion to modern-day professional wrestlers, many barnstorming teams tried to tell a narrative of sorts, even if it meant playing up racial stereotypes. It was a strange yet exciting era of basketball history. The old adage "as Ohio goes, so goes the nation" is repeated by political commentators and pundits during every election cycle. And for good reason: Ohio has accurately chosen the winner in 29 of the last 31 presidential elections, more than any other state.rnrnBut what makes Ohio so uniquely positioned to reflect the current identity of our country and accurately predict the outcomes of elections? Author David Giffels spent a year traveling 4,000 miles throughout the state, visiting people and places that offer valuable reflections of the national questions and concerns -- all as a historic Presidential election looms.rnrnIn this current climate, the question of America's identity has rarely been more urgent, and no American place has ever more reliably illuminated that identity than Ohio. Join us as Giffels shares stories from his journey and what he learned about the future of America from Ohioans.rnrnThe livestream will be available beginning at 12:30 p.m. Have questions? I've known Jeff Potter for over 12 years now. We first met when he published his first book, "Whatever Happened to Baseball." We share the same philosophy of teaching life lessons through the game of baseball. I was in the midst of writing my first book, "The Beauty of a Diamond, through the eyes of a Coach." when Jeff and I met. He was a big reason as to why I got it to the finish line and published, I had been working on it for years and no one other than my wife and mom knew that I was writing it, he challenged me to start telling everyone that I was writing a book. When I asked him why, he simply said that those who I tell would hold me accountable to get it finished because they'd ask me about the progress. I followed his advise and he was right. I published in 2012. Jeff now runs the Potter Baseball Tour, in which he takes a group of young people on a 30 day field trip across the Mid-Atlantic region playing barnstorming baseball games and giving back to the communities in which they visit. He has written two additional books since we met, "Saving Baseball" and "Far from being Done."
