Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final Sunday sermon was titled, “Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution.” In other words, he was advising us to stay woke. Today, that term has become a political slur. “Woke” is at the very center of our culture wars – especially as we enter a contentious election year. But like a lot of slang words, woke has an origin story that's got little to do with how it's used now.  Host Kai Wright is joined by Alvin Singh, great-great nephew Lead Belly and producer of the documentary Lead Belly: The Man Invented Rock & Roll. Together, they explore the folk singer who popularized the term, and the landmark civil rights case that inspired him to issue a note of caution to Black America. Then, Juliet Hooker, Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence in Political Science at Brown University and author of Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics of Loss, and Maimouna “Mumu Fresh” Youssef, Grammy-nominated Afro-Indigenous singer, songwriter, and activist, join for a conversation about the current sociopolitical landscape and the true motivations behind the co-opting of “wokeness.” Plus, a live audience at the Apollo Theater contributes ideas on what we need to “stay woke” today. This conversation was programmed as part of The Apollo's Uptown Hall series and originally recorded on Sunday, January 14 at 2pm ET. This 18th annual co-production between The Apollo and WNYC, two of New York City's leading media and cultural institutions, has become the city's signature event commemorating the political, cultural, and social legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tell us what you think. Trigger warning: Discussion of child sexual abuse.Jonny Pelham has become one of the most disarmingly hilarious comics in the UK by building his punchlines on a bedrock of unflinching honesty. There's a big difference between the comedy cliche of “saying the unsayable”, and being able to find the humanity and authenticity in a subject that people don't want to talk about. We talk about his new Edinburgh Fringe show “Optimism Over Despair”, and he leads us through the experience at that show's core: his reflections over using his set on Live At The Apollo to discuss the sexual abuse he experienced as a child. We also learn about his clinical “maladaptive daydreaming”, and what it's like to always come with a trigger warning.20mins of *double trigger-warning* extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Jonny on a joke that he's always found too dark to make work, but which says something very important about his experiences; how he makes the personal political; and how to make biographical work what you want it to be in the face of algorithmic soup!Go to www.comedianscomedian.com/insiders for ad-free episodes, extra content from every show that has it, and much more - including exclusive Insiders Q&As plus the incredible “self-help for comedians” special with Amanda Donnet.Catch up with Jonny:https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jonny-pelham-optimism-over-despairwww.jonnypelham.comTW/IG: @jonny_pelhamEverything Stu's up to:Stu's new Edfringe show “Spoilers” (WINNER Best Show 2023, Leicester Comedy Festival, woo!) is ON SALE NOW atwww.stuartgoldsmith.com/ticketsAnd find preview dates as well as podcast community links, social media handles and comedy clips, and Stu's official YouTube channel, all at linktr.ee/stuartgoldsmithOr join the mailing list for unspecified freebies at:www.comedianscomedian.comwww.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“There's perfect and there's perfect; and that was perfect.” David Cooper, Chief People Officer Circle Health Group Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Deeper Cuts: The Live Sessions – a three-episode miniseries which finds the Deeper Cuts trio looking at the live music albums that were meaningful to them, and pondering what makes a great live album. There are wake-up calls and there are WAKE UP! calls. When Rob was growing up, his Dad's copy of James Brown and the Famous Flames' Live at the Apollo record was one of those... and in more than one respect. For Rob, one form was literal, while another form took hold over a much longer term, helping to shape his musical outlook for all time. In this first of three episodes of Deeper Cuts: The Live Sessions, Rob, Shannon and Graeme talk about what makes a great live record with this one as something of a gold standard. We'll talk about what the dynamics between artist and audience mean to how well they work, the value of an album as a "souvenir" of a concert in a particular time and plance, and of course what the significance of such albums are to us as music fans and as people. So – are you ready for Star Time? If so, the stage awaits! Our Spotify Playlist covers each episode of this miniseries. 2014 saw Australian comic Celia Pacquola return to Edinburgh for her fourth Fringe Show. ‘Let Me Know How It All Worked Out' looked at the world of psychics and their promise of foretelling the future; specifically one who said she would never have children. (Spoiler… congratulations are in order, Celia and her partner had their first child earlier this year,). Since the Fringe Pacquola moved frequently between the UK Australia, with various apeprances, scriptwriting, and starring appearances in a wide range of shows on the circuit, including radio work on Fox FM and Radio 4, TV work on Would I Lie To You, Live At The Apollo, and Have You Been Paying Attention, and staring in Rosehaven, and The Breaker Uppers. All that was ahead of her in 2014 when she joined me in the podcast studio to talk about her show. It wasn't the first time she'd been on the Fringe podcast, so the whole ‘tell us about your show' quickly descended into discussions of synchronised diving, Tom Daley, Pro/Am contest, and a love of Converse trainers. This week's trip is back to the Gilded Ballon, back to a time when the future we live in now was quite definitely not going to happen, as Celia Pacquola asks the audience to Let Me Know How It All Works Out,

Sindhu Vee takes a seat at the Dish table with Nick and Angela this week. After swapping a career in investment banking for comedy, Sindhu has toured the world, has featured on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, QI, Have I Got News For You and the critically acclaimed Netflix show Sex Education, to name but a few. Over some baked cod and cuvée, Sindhu shares what happened when she ate a REALLY spicy chilli, the pros and cons of fish admin and her role in the brand new Matilda movie. Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer in a future episode. Dish is a Somethin:Else Creative Studio production for Waitrose & Partners.
