The Curse of the Marquis de Sade: A Notorious Scoundrel, a Mythical Manuscript, and the Biggest Scandal in Literary History by Joel Warner The captivating, deeply reported true story of how one of the most notorious novels ever written—Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom—landed at the heart of one of the biggest scams in modern literary history. “Reading The Curse of the Marquis de Sade, with the Marquis, the sabotage of rare manuscript sales, and a massive Ponzi scheme at its center, felt like a twisty waterslide shooting through a sleazy and bizarre landscape. This book is wild.”—Adam McKay, Academy Award–winning filmmaker Described as both “one of the most important novels ever written” and “the gospel of evil,” 120 Days of Sodom was written by the Marquis de Sade, a notorious eighteenth-century aristocrat who waged a campaign of mayhem and debauchery across France, evaded execution, and inspired the word “sadism,” which came to mean receiving pleasure from pain. Despite all his crimes, Sade considered this work to be his greatest transgression. The original manuscript of 120 Days of Sodom, a tiny scroll penned in the bowels of the Bastille in Paris, would embark on a centuries-spanning odyssey across Europe, passing from nineteenth-century banned book collectors to pioneering sex researchers to avant-garde artists before being hidden away from Nazi book burnings. In 2014, the world heralded its return to France when the scroll was purchased for millions by Gérard Lhéritier, the self-made son of a plumber who had used his savvy business skills to upend France's renowned rare-book market. But the sale opened the door to vendettas by the government, feuds among antiquarian booksellers, manuscript sales derailed by sabotage, a record-breaking lottery jackpot, and allegations of a decade-long billion-euro con, the specifics of which, if true, would make the scroll part of France's largest-ever Ponzi scheme. Told with gripping reporting and flush with deceit and scandal, The Curse of the Marquis de Sade weaves together the sweeping odyssey of 120 Days of Sodom and the spectacular rise and fall of Lhéritier, once the “king of manuscripts” and now known to many as the Bernie Madoff of France. At its center is an urgent question for all those who cherish the written word: As the age of handwriting comes to an end, what do we owe the original texts left behind? About the Author Joel Warner is a writer and editor whose work has appeared in Esquire, Wired, Newsweek, Men's Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, Popular Science, and Slate, among others. He currently serves as managing editor of the investigative news outlet The Lever and previously worked as a staff writer at International Business Times and Westword. He is also co-author of The Humor Code. He lives with his family in Denver, Colorado.

This time our guest is Andy Hall Hall - a Music Producer / Songwriter / Engineer, working out of his studio in Battersea, South London. He started his career as a guitarist & vocalist in bands, but soon turned his interest to production after co-writing The Other Tribe's summer hit song 'Skirts' in 2012. He's worked with some massive artists including James Gillespie, Bastille, Griff, Kygo, & Fickle Friends. He produced the majority of James Gillespie's debut album ‘Safe', including singles ‘What You Do', and ‘Beyond Today'. To compliment episode 25 (Cameron Gower-Poole), we get the perspective of another vocal producer; Andy has recorded vocals for Kygo, Griff, and Two Another, as well as the Marshmallo ft. Bastille smash hit ‘Happier'. We talk compression, recording on tour, the 00s UK port-hardcore (read: emo) scene, and colour coding your regions. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London.

As it's nearly Santa's birthday what better way to mark the occasion than by two podcasts doing a crossover episode? Christopher Webb & Robert Johnson are the hosts of Still Any Good which examines films and television shows that they enjoyed in their misspent youth and now revisit to see if they still hold up today. A perfect example is the 1981 Mel Brooks anthology comedy movie History Of The World Part One which qualifies for Goon Pod due to a small but significant role for Spike Milligan playing, as Chris puts it, "the Birdman of the Bastille". The film purports to tell the history of the world since man evolved from the fish, although skips most of it - what we do get is Sid Caesar and pals ugging it up as comedy cavepeople; a memorable Moses moment; a sword-and-sandal saga which outstays its welcome; the circumstances surrounding The Last Supper (with John Hurt as Jesus); the Spanish Inquisition as reimagined by Busby Berkeley; and the first stirrings of the French Revolution (it's highly doubtful Mel Brooks troubled himself to read Thomas Carlyle on the subject, being more interested in portraying Louis XVI as a randy old goat with a bums and bosoms fixation - hump or death? Purrrrlease.) Still, there's chuckles to be had along the way as Rob & Chris join Tyler to ask the question: is it Still Any Goon? SAG is here: https://stillanygood.buzzsprout.com/113660

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2022 2:29

Learn more about your ad choices.
