New Zealand's native freshwater mussels, or kākahi, are a keystone species for healthy lake and river ecosystems.  But in many lakes across Auckland, kākahi have disappeared.  Lake Rototoa near the entrance to Kaipara Harbour is still home to some kākahi, but they're struggling to successfully breed due to invasive fish called perch.  Now, a team from Auckland Council have come up with a plan to help protect the kākahi.  Ellen Rykers joins them out on the water.

In this episode Sue Berman talks to map librarian Katrina Laan about a taonga from the heritage collection - Chart of the entrance to Kaipara Harbour, drawn by Captain Thomas Wing, January, 1836. https://kura.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/digital/collection/maps/id/1896/rec/1 Thomas Wing (1810-1888), master mariner, cartographer, harbourmaster and pilot, was a notable figure in New Zealand’s early European history. Wing acquired his maritime knowledge during his youth in Essex, England. He arrived in New Zealand in August 1832 as a crew member on the Fortitude, which was part owned by his cousin Samuel Stephenson, and by J. R. Clendon, who had a trading base at Okiato. From 1832 to 1834 he journeyed around the northern coast of New Zealand, and to Port Jackson as mate of the Fortitude, acquiring a good knowledge of New Zealand waters. In 1834, Stephenson and Clendon appointed Wing master of their new schooner, the Fanny, which had been built at Hokianga. The Fanny was chartered in January 1836 by Rev. William White of the Wesleyan mission at Mangungu to take a group and establish further missions. At White’s request, Wing sailed the Fanny into Kaipara Harbour on 6 January 1836 - possibly the first European to do so - and drew the first known survey sketch chart of its complicated entrance way, which is on display in this case. Today is a bit special, it's episode 50. When I started out the podcast I wasn't sure where it would go but I'm pretty thankful that I've got to chat with so many fascinating people, and that you have tuned in and found it interesting. I've got a treat for you today. Alex Asher is back talking about his latest uncomfortable journey. Some of you will remember Alex from episode 2 of the show - one of the launch episodes. Alex filled us in on the next uncomfortable thing he was going to do, which was running and swimming the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. He's done it and he tells the story today. Alex talks us through the process, including the pre-contemplation and the development of the idea. He talks about sharing the idea and allowing others the opportunity to help him with it. We talk the differences between his east coast run and this one. He chats openly about being the first person to swim the Kaipara Harbour, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and notorious for it's strong currents and Great White Sharks. Alex leaves us with the feeling of empowerment he achieved from doing something really really hard, and overcoming the physical and mental blocks that come along with it. Thanks for everyone who has helped out with the podcast so far, especially the guests that have come along to share their time, and you guys for listening in. Thanks to my bro Jeremy Desmond for the sweet theme music, Rich Fortune for the IT support, my wife Julia for her support, and everyone that has reached out with a message, a comment, or a suggestion of someone I should chat to. Thanks for continuing too get uncomfortable with us.
