Should voters have to prove their competence? How do balance ethics & efficacy in the world of politics? Dr. Jason Brennan is a Flanigan Family professor at Georgetown Business School who agrees that democracies outperform most historical alternatives, but suggests that some form of Epistocracy (meaning the rule of the knowledgeable) could be worth experimenting with. In other words, the more of an informed voter you are, the more weight your vote carries.  He covers why democracy may not be as bullet proof as we believe, what the practical applications of epistocracy could look like, education's disappointing impact on informed voting & the right and wrong way to become a more informed voter. This episode originally aired on April 15, 2024 If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 136: VIRTUE SIGNALING. Send me a some feedback! Why do so many people sabotage the very success, love, freedom, and fulfillment they say they want? In this episode, Mike Kitko connects two of the most powerful concepts in personal development: your beliefs create your experience, and your nervous system works tirelessly to protect those beliefs by keeping you in familiar circumstances. When you understand how these two systems work together, you'll finally see why lasting change has felt so difficult—and what it really takes to create sustainable success. Mike also introduces the foundation of his upcoming webinar, The Science of Sustainable Success, and explains how retraining your nervous system and releasing limiting beliefs allows you to receive more wealth, happiness, love, fulfillment, freedom, and impact without unconsciously sabotaging yourself. Key Takeaways1. Your Nervous System Prioritizes Survival Over Success Your nervous system has one primary job: keeping you alive. It prefers familiar circumstances—even when they limit your growth. 2. Your Beliefs Create the Life You Experience You don't experience life as it is—you experience life through the beliefs you hold about yourself, other people, and what's possible. 3. Your Nervous System Protects Your Beliefs Even limiting beliefs feel "safe" to your nervous system. Releasing them requires moving through uncertainty until your body learns a new normal. 4. Sustainable Success Requires Internal Change Creating success is one thing. Keeping it requires expanding your capacity to receive it without your nervous system pulling you back to what's familiar. 5. Receiving Requires Letting Go of Old Stories When you release beliefs that no longer serve you, you create space to receive greater wealth, freedom, peace, fulfillment, love, and significance. Notable Quotes"Your nervous system has one job and one job only: to keep you alive. It doesn't care if you're wealthy, successful, happy, or fulfilled. It only cares that you're breathing.""You don't experience life as it is. You experience life as you believe it to be. Your beliefs create your reality.""Your nervous system protects the beliefs you're holding because those beliefs have become familiar—and familiar feels safe.""If you want to experience more, you've got to be willing to believe more. And that means allowing your nervous system to become uncomfortable for a while.""If your nervous system isn't comfortable holding success, it's only a matter of time before you'll sabotage it."Call to ActionIf this episode challenged the way you've been thinking about success, take a moment to reflect on the beliefs you've been protecting and the familiar patterns your nervous system has been working so hard to preserve. Real transformation begins when you become aware of what's been unconsciously directing your life.Click here to join Mike for his free webinar, The Science of Sustainable Success, on August 4 at 6:00 PM Central, where you'll learn how your nervous system and belief system work together—and how to create lasting success without self-sabotage.Then, if you're ready for a deeper transformation, click here to join the Built to Give, Rebuilt to Receive Workshop on August 28–29 in St. Charles (just outside St. Louis), Missouri. IntroductionLast week we considered God's promise to Abram that the Lord is our shield. Lord's Day 21 expands that promise from individuals to the community. It expands to his holy assembly. While our culture prizes independence, Scripture reminds us that Christianity is never simply "my Bible and me." Christ gathers a people for himself, and it is within his church that he nurtures, strengthens, and preserves his saints. The One Triune God Gathers his People When we confess belief in the "holy catholic church," we are confessing faith in the universal church, not the Roman Catholic Church. The Apostles' Creed uses this language to communicate that from the beginning, God has always intended to gather a people who would fellowship with him. In fact, throughout covenant history God has always worked in the context of a community. Man was not created to be alone. (Genesis 2:18). Man was created to spread out across the earth, to produce, and to multiply in God's perfect creation. Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world. The Lord promised to divide the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). The champion seed, Christ, will rise from the seed of the woman and defeat the serpent. One thing we cannot miss is that the Lord will divide the human race. Now, in a fallen world, we see that Christ gathers his people through his word and Spirit. The ordinary means God uses to call sinners is the preaching of the gospel. That is why the church itself is evangelistic. We invite people into the place where Christ speaks through his Word. We are not invited or called to live on our own apart from Christ's community. Conversion ultimately belongs to God's sovereign work. Some are converted dramatically, others gradually, and covenant children often cannot remember a day they did not believe. Whatever the manner, it is Christ who gathers his elect throughout history into one covenant family. No, the church is not perfect, and in this life there will be hypocrites mixed into the church. (I Corinthians 5; Belgic Confession Article 29)Christ Unites his People in himselfThe church is not some club or just some organization where we pay our dues. No, the church is Christ's body. Romans 8 reminds us repeatedly that we are heirs together with Christ. Salvation is not merely individual but corporate. Every believer shares equally in Christ's inheritance through adoption as we take hold of Christ by faith.Because we belong to one body, every member has gifts to use for the good of the whole. Rather than asking, "What can this church do for me?" we ought to ask, "How can I serve Christ by serving his people?" (Romans 12). Paul reminds us that we have not received a spirit of slavery but of adoption. We are not terrified of God like he is some unstable king. No, we approach God as Abba, Father, sharing the same family privilege Christ has secured for us. Our identity is no longer found in proving ourselves worthy but in belonging to God's family through grace alone by faith alone. Christ Guards his ChurchRomans 8 offers one of Scripture's greatest assurances. Yes, we will suffer. Paul does not deny suffering. Christians grieve. Christ himself wept at Lazarus' tomb and over Jerusalem. We taste Christ's blessing by faith and the Spirit, but we have not arrived at the full glory. Romans 8:28 is not a command to suppress grief but a promise that God will redeem even our darkest seasons and most trying times for our eternal good. We don't just carelessly say this to people who are grieving, as this is not going to be necessarily helpful. However, as we reflect back on life, we can see that God has shaped us and moulded us through those trying times. We say that he did not cause it, but he allowed it for reasons he has not revealed to us. We need to remember that in the fall we wanted chaos, disorder, and abuse. We can get discouraged in this life. So, Paul shows that God's intention is to finish the work that he started. God has chosen us, and God will bring us to full glorification. In fact, as Paul lists 10 and 7 things that can come against us, ultimately we ponder these triumphant questions: Who can bring a charge against God's elect?Who can condemn?Who can separate us from the love of Christ? His answer is emphatic: No one. Christ's work is so sure that there is no power, there is no army, there is no authority that will destroy us. In fact, when Paul cites Psalm 44:22, we read in the Psalm that David is waiting for an answer. Paul gives the answer: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)The Good Shepherd loses none of those whom the Father has given him.ConclusionThe communion of saints is not merely a comforting doctrine; it is the reality that our life is held together in Christ. Because Christ has gathered us, united us, and promised never to forsake us, we are free to encourage one another through every season of life. The emphasis is encouragement. Sometimes we sit quietly with a friend. This is probably the most effective time Job's counselors interacted with him. The reality is that sometimes we have nothing to say, and we just sit with someone so they are not alone. Sometimes we rehearse the promises of Scripture. Discerning what is pleasing to the Lord is not always easy. Ultimately, we want to avoid shallow answers to suffering; we remind one another that our faithful Savior is still working, still defending, and still leading his people home. He may seem silent, but he is actively working in our lives to shepherd us to glory. As we serve Christ by serving his church, we press on together with this confidence: Nothing can separate God's people from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let that be our hope.

A few weeks ago, in Episode 827, I talked about attention, distraction, and intentionally subtracting the things that pull me away from what matters most. But removing external distractions doesn't solve everything. I've discovered that some of my strongest distractions come from inside my own mind. A new idea appears. I remember something I need to do. I suddenly want to build something in Notion. And before I know it, I've abandoned the very thing I intentionally blocked time to accomplish. In this episode, I share two simple practices that have dramatically changed how I protect my focused work: Capture and Return When an important idea or reminder comes to mind, I capture it quickly without acting on it. This matters—but not now. I don't have to dishonor a good idea in order to honor my current commitment. Release and Return Sometimes I realize the thought doesn't deserve any further attention at all. Or sometimes I discover that I've already wandered down a rabbit trail. Instead of judging myself or turning the distraction into failure: No shame. No drama. Notice it. Release it. Return. That led me to a deeper realization: The goal is not to never get distracted. The practice is learning to return. I also explore how this connects with more than 1,600 consecutive days of meditation and one of the central statements from my personal manifesto: Discipline is the loving protection of what I am devoted to. Protected focus starts with knowing your desired outcome, understanding why it matters, identifying the next aligned action, and putting that action on your calendar. Then, when the time comes: Protect what you said you were devoted to. Capture and return. Release and return. And keep returning. Ready to Create More Momentum? If you have a desired outcome but need greater clarity, honest reflection, strategic feedback, aligned next actions, calendared commitment, protected focus, and relational accountability to help you move forward, I invite you to explore Next Level Mastermind: Momentum. “The Fortress That Never Saw It Coming”When Human Pride Meets Divine JudgmentLee Arnold LiveScripture: Jeremiah 51:1–64 Babylon was the greatest empire on earth. Its walls were massive. Its army was feared. Its wealth was unmatched. Protected by the Euphrates River and fortified by seemingly impenetrable defenses, Babylon believed it was untouchable. But Babylon made a fatal mistake. It measured the strength of its walls while ignoring the power of the God who stood against it. Jeremiah 51 is not simply about the destruction of an ancient empire. It is a warning to every person, nation, and culture that places confidence in human strength rather than God's sovereignty. The fortress fell not because it was weak, but because its greatest vulnerability was one it never imagined. And often, the same is true of us. Key Takeaways• Every human kingdom eventually falls, but God's Kingdom stands forever• Discipline from God is not the same as abandonment by God• God never forsakes those He has redeemed• False security is one of Satan's greatest deceptions• Idols cannot save, protect, or deliver• What appears strongest to man is never stronger than God• Pride blinds us to our greatest vulnerabilities• God remains sovereign over nations, leaders, and history• The safest refuge is not a fortress, but Jesus Christ• Believers are repeatedly called to "come out of Babylon" and separate themselves from worldly allegiances Today's ReminderBabylon trusted its walls.Babylon trusted its wealth.Babylon trusted its army.Babylon trusted its river.Babylon trusted everything except God. [Jeremiah 5...of Babylon | Word]And yet none of those things could save it when God's judgment arrived. The same danger exists today.Your Babylon may not be a city.It may be a career. It may be money. It may be a relationship. It may be political power. It may be self-sufficiency.It may be a secret sin that has captured your heart.Three times in Jeremiah 51, God tells His people the same thing:"Come out of Babylon."This was not merely a command to change locations. It was a command to change allegiance.God's people were not meant to place their trust in Babylon's kingdom. They were called to trust God's Kingdom. The same call remains today.Every wall eventually falls.Every empire eventually crumbles.Every earthly kingdom has an expiration date.Only the Kingdom of Jesus Christ will stand forever. Questions for Reflection• What Babylon has captured my heart?• What am I trusting more than Christ?• Am I relying on my fortress or God's faithfulness?• Have I confused God's discipline with God's rejection?• Am I building a temporary kingdom or investing in an eternal one? Today's ChallengeGod's message to Babylon wasn't ultimately about geography. It was about loyalty. It was about trust. It was about worship.Babylon still exists wherever people are told:"You don't need God.""Trust yourself.""Build your own kingdom.""Live for today."But God still says:"Come out of her." [Jeremiah 5...of Babylon | Word]Leave behind the things that compete with Christ.Build your life on the Rock.Because when everything else is shaken, Jesus Christ remains the only Kingdom that cannot be moved. Non-qualified deferred compensation could be one of the most valuable benefits you're not using. In this episode of Gimme Some Truth, we break down NQDC — a powerful but often overlooked benefit available to executives and high earners at many public companies. They cover how it works, who it's for, the key risks involved, and why planning ahead is critical before open enrollment season hits.If you're a senior leader, executive, or high-income earner at a public company, this episode could save you a significant amount in taxes — or help you avoid a costly mistake.

The Inventive Journey

Your trademark can last a very long time. Potentially forever. But, like a houseplant, a customer relationship, or the office printer that only works when spoken to respectfully, it needs care. This episode breaks down the question every founder eventually asks: how long does a trademark last? The answer is both encouraging and slightly paperwork-flavored. In the United States, a federal trademark registration can continue indefinitely if the owner keeps using the mark in commerce and files the required maintenance and renewal documents on time. That is the good news. The less glamorous news is that a trademark registration is not a trophy you place on a shelf forever. It has deadlines, use requirements, and renewal windows. It also has a talent for becoming a problem right when your business is busy launching, raising money, hiring people, or discovering that the website footer still says copyright twenty nineteen. In this episode, we explain why trademarks are different from patents. Patents have fixed terms. Trademarks are connected to marketplace identity. If customers still associate your mark with your goods or services, and you maintain the registration, protection can continue decade after decade. We also cover the major U.S. trademark maintenance windows business owners should know. After registration, owners usually need to file a declaration of continued use between the fifth and sixth year. Then, between the ninth and tenth year, renewal and maintenance documents are typically due. After that, renewals continue every ten years. We dig into what “use in commerce” actually means. A trademark needs real commercial use connected to the goods or services in the registration. For products, that could include packaging, labels, product pages, or point-of-sale displays. For services, it might include websites, proposals, ads, or booking pages. We also talk about abandonment, which is the legal version of your brand wandering off into the woods. If a business stops using a mark and has no intent to resume use, the mark can become vulnerable. Three consecutive years of nonuse can become strong evidence of abandonment under U.S. law. That is why “we might bring it back someday” is not a great trademark strategy unless there is a real plan behind it.Monitoring is another major topic. Registering a trademark does not mean the government automatically enforces it for you. The USPTO does not patrol the marketplace with a tiny badge and a suspiciously well-organized spreadsheet. Trademark owners usually need to watch for confusingly similar brands, copycats, partner misuse, and signs that consumers are getting confused. The episode also explains why enforcement should be strategic. Not every similar word deserves a legal battle. Smart trademark enforcement looks at similarity, related goods or services, customer overlap, actual confusion, market impact, and business goals. Sometimes the right move is a letter. Sometimes it is a coexistence agreement, takedown, or litigation. For founders and small business owners, the practical takeaway is simple: treat trademarks like active business assets. Calendar deadlines early. Save proof of use. Review registrations annually. Keep ownership records clean. Update goods and services when the business changes. Monitor the market. Use the mark consistently. And please, do not rely on memory as your legal operations system. Deadlines love disguises. This episode is especially useful for startup founders, small business owners, marketing leaders, brand managers, product companies, service businesses, franchise operators, and anyone who has ever said, “We registered the name, so we're good forever, right?”Your trademark is more than a name. It is the symbol customers remember, the asset competitors notice, and the brand signal investors may evaluate. Protect it like it matters, because it probably does.To chat about this one-on-one, grab a free consult at strategymeeting.com

Weaving in Scotland In this episode of 'Unique Scotland', John Harbour explores the history and cultural significance of weaving in Scotland, inspired by his previous interview with Clare Campbell of the Highland tartan mill, Prickly Thistle. The podcast traces Scotland's textile heritage from its earliest beginnings through industrialisation and into the modern era. He talks about the survival of hand looms in the Outer Hebrides, especially in the Isle of Harris where the woven material is legally protected. And how did one man, with a loom in his garden shed satisfy NIKE's demand for 20,000 metres of cloth. You will hear an interview with Donald John Mackay who satisfied that order. Although ancient textiles rarely survive in Scotland's climate, archaeological evidence shows that Scots were working with fibres and woven fabrics thousands of years ago. Over centuries, weaving became an essential part of rural life, with families producing cloth in homes, crofts, and villages. This domestic industry laid the foundations for Scotland's later textile evolution. Scottish weaving developed around four key fibres, each shaping different regions and communities. Wool, Scotland's most iconic fibre, was produced from sheep in the Highlands, Islands, Borders, and upland regions, leading to famous products such as tweed and tartan. Flax, used to make linen, was cultivated mainly in eastern Scotland and supported important industries in Fife, Angus, and Perthshire. Cotton, imported through Atlantic trade, fuelled the growth of textile mills in Paisley, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, and New Lanark, transforming clothing and fashion. Jute, imported from Bengal, turned Dundee into one of the world's leading industrial textile centres, producing sacks, canvas, and other durable materials. The Industrial Revolution transformed Scottish weaving by moving production from homes into mechanised mills. While industrialisation brought growth, employment, and international trade, it also disrupted traditional ways of life, reducing the role of hand spinners and weavers and creating new factory-based working conditions. Two of Scotland's most famous textiles are Tartan and Tweed. Tartan became closely associated with Highland culture, clan identity, and ceremonial dress. Tweed developed as a practical woollen cloth suited to Scotland's rugged climate before becoming internationally recognised for its quality and connection to country life. Royal patronage, particularly from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Balmoral, helped elevate tweed's prestige. The pinnacle of Scottish weaving tradition is Harris Tweed, produced in the Outer Hebrides. Protected by law, Harris Tweed must be made from pure virgin wool, dyed and spun in the islands, and handwoven by islanders in their homes. Its unique colours, durability, and craftsmanship have made it one of the world's most respected fabrics, demonstrating how traditional skills can thrive in modern markets. John's interview with Donald John Mackay, a Harris Weaver for 70 years, brings to life this cottage industry where Harris Tweed is protected by law. Today, Scotland's textile industry combines large-scale luxury manufacturers with smaller craft businesses and independent weavers. Companies in the Scottish Borders, Elgin, Dundee, and the Outer Hebrides continue to produce world-class fabrics, while businesses such as Prickly Thistle emphasise sustainability, local identity, and traditional craftsmanship. Ultimately, Scotland's weaving story is one of adaptation, resilience, and cultural continuity. From prehistoric fibres and cottage industries to global fashion and luxury textiles, weaving remains deeply connected to Scotland's landscape, communities, history, and identity.
