A new report highlights the effects of climate change on Northland - and why our northernmost region is so vulnerable to its effects. Peter de Graaf reports.

Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how floating cities can enhance opportunities for coastal cities. This article proposes a multi-criteria analysis to identify best locations for floating cities and implementation strategies.Find the article through this link.Abstract: Population growth and urbanization mainly take place in vulnerable coastal areas. This article presents a global overview of these areas with both rapid population growth and high flood risk, in order to identify coastal areas that could benefit most from floating urban development. The analysis focuses on port cities, since they are coastal cities that have both availability of locations and the required expertise (e.g. maritime industry and services) to enable floating developments. After identifying the most promising locations, an implementation strategy is discussed, which favours areas where floating projects are already present to start testing medium and large-scale concepts. Next, a large scale floating maritime spatial project is presented, which integrates urban and ecosystem development with food and energy production in the North Sea. Diederik Samsom is misschien wel een van de interessantste politici van de afgelopen twintig jaar. Als leider van de PvdA haalde hij in 2012 maar liefst 38 zetels – kom daar nu maar eens om. Hij verloor die verkiezingen van Mark Rutte (41 zetels), met wie hij vervolgens ging samenwerken. En de PvdA lijkt daar nooit helemaal meer van hersteld. Toch draait zijn carrière vooral om één groot thema: klimaat. Als stafchef van eurocommissaris Frans Timmermans was Samsom de architect achter de Europese Green Deal – een van de meest ingrijpende klimaatpakketten ooit. Zijn nieuwe boek Groene Supermacht gaat daarover. En ja, over klimaat kun je somber worden. Maar volgens Samsom is pessimisme misplaatst. Hij schrijft: “Vergeet het vuur, het wiel of zelfs de drie eerdere industriële revoluties. Wat nu wordt gepresteerd, is nog nooit vertoond. De mens blijkt – alsnog – tot iets magisch in staat. Gaan we het dan tóch nog redden?" Hoe urgent is de situatie echt? Miljardair Bill Gates – die Samsom regelmatig sprak in Brussel – zei onlangs dat ‘de klimaatdoemscenario's de ijskast in kunnen' en dat er inmiddels grotere problemen zijn dan het klimaat. Heeft hij een punt?  En een andere grote vraag: moeten we de oplossing zoeken in technologie of moraliteit en gedrag? David Boogerd sprak Diederik Samsom uiteraard samen met vaste gast theoloog Stefan Paas, hoogleraar aan de VU in Amsterdam en de Theologische Universiteit Utrecht. A petition calling for a stronger dog control law has put the spotlight back on Northland's, and the nation's, problem with roaming dogs. Dog attack victims say they're too scared to walk to their dairy and even a Northland dog advocate says the problem is completely out of hand and will only get worse as economic hardship deepens. The Mayor of the Far North says the problem is massive. There are only about 8,000 dogs registered on record but Moko Tepania says the true number of dogs in Northland could be as high as 20,000 to 30,000. Peter de Graaf reports.

There's heartbreak among former staff of a Whangarei lion park at news that the seven surviving big cats are due to be put down this week. Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary operator Janette Vallance says the park owners, Bolton Equities, made the difficult decision to euthanise the seven lions, saying there was no options left for them. The park is now closed to the public and the property listed for sale. Northland reporter Peter de Graaf has more.

Are we entering an era when robots will finally liberate people, and particularly women, from the drudgery of housework? Outgoing Kaipara Mayor Craig Jepson has called an emergency meeting just 24 hours before the final results of a cliffhanger election will be announced. Northland's community is grappling with the imminent closure of its leading hospitality training provider. The shutting of the QRC Te Tai Tokerau will force school leavers to travel large distances to seek qualifications, and leave hotels and restaurants scrambling for staff. De Zeeuwse Ichelle van de Velde verdwijnt op 15 december 2020 spoorloos. A new Far North District Council bylaw requires all cats over the age of four months to be "chipped and snipped". It's a big change for the Far North which has not tried to restrict cats in the past, despite its warm climate and almost year-round kitten season. Het alledaagse tafereel van de dienstmeid staat symbool voor een bredere geschiedenis. Cultureel-antropoloog Caroline Hanken schreef het boek Vrouw en Meid- De geschiedenis van een leven binnenshuis 1550 – 1950, en is te gast.    (1:03:08) In Moeder-Land staan de brieven centraal tussen ouders in een dorp in de Sovjet-Unie en hun dochter Alexandra die na gedwongen werk in Duitsland een leven in Nederland heeft opgebouwd. Ze worden door de Tweede Wereldoorlog en later door het IJzeren Gordijn van elkaar gescheiden. Alexandra ziet haar ouders nooit meer terug.    Haar dochter Frieda (78) heeft de brieven van haar moeder altijd bewaard, maar kan het russisch niet lezen. Programmamaker Yula Altchouler is van Russische afkomst en vertaalde de honderden verkleurde velletjes die de ouders van Alexandra schreven. In iedere brief vragen ze haar om terug te komen.
