Beatrice de Graaf illuminates how, long before economic considerations set in motion the creation of the European Union, collective European security provided the first impulse for the integration of European norms and institutions.  After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Europe's victorious powers sought to forestall the reemergence of war and revolutionary terror by establishing the Allied Council. The Council transformed interstate relations into the first, modern system of collective security in Europe. Drawing on the records of the Council and the correspondence of key figures such as Metternich, Castlereagh, Wellington, and Alexander I, Beatrice de Graaf tells the story of Europe's transition from concluding a war to consolidating a new order.  ABOUT THE SPEAKER Beatrice de Graaf is a historian and a security researcher. She studies the emergence of and threats to European security arrangements from the 19th century until the present. Her book Fighting Terror after Napoleon: How Europe Became Secure after 1815, won the 2022 Arenberg Prize for European History. She is currently working on a translation of her latest book, Radical Redemption: What Terrorists Believe In, which combines testimony, history, psychology, politics and theology to understand how the search for radical personal redemption can lead to violence. Beatrice is a member of The Netherlands Academy of Sciences and of the Academia Europaea. She is the editor of Terrorism and Political Violence, as well as of the Journal of Modern European History. She is also a fellow at the Program on Extremism and the ISIS Files Project at George Washington University. This week on the Head Shepherd podcast we have Professor Simon de Graaf, a fellow podcaster and a world expert in sheep reproduction, sperm sexing and AI.Simon is currently a Professor of Animal Reproduction at The University of Sydney,  where he says 90% of the work he does now is sheep "But my background is such that we've dealt with a lot of different species."Simons work in reproduction began during his PhD where he studied sexed semen. Mark asks for a run through of the process of sexing semen."It's all based on the fact there's a different amount of DNA in a male sperm and a female sperm." explains Simon. "The X chromosome is bigger than the Y chromosome so if you add a special dye to it, you can pick up the higher florescence in the X chromosome." The method for successfully separating sexed semen was a success. "The big challenge, after they initially developed the technology, was keeping the sperm alive though the process." explains Simon. "It's a lot to be shot through a cannon at 80 miles an hour...it's not a recipe for long life. So there was a lot of research that went into keeping them happy and healthy in the process" ​Fast forward 20 years and the results of sexed semen have pretty good conception rates."There's certainly been some people that have gotten fantastic results in recent times and [they] are going back for second or even third sexed semen programs. You should expect, if everything goes right, around your normal AI, which is around 70%."Mark asks if Simon is involved in anything that might explain the variability of AI success."With in my team, Dr Jessica Rickard and Eloise Spanner, they have just commenced a project on prediction of AI success."Part of this project is to attempt to place a few more numbers or gather more information on what makes for a success or what makes for a failure.Mark and Simon then cover "Reproduction Co", Simons latest venture."I've always been quite interested in the commercial space and I was keen to offer the semen assessment service at a national level. So what I decided to do was set up this business. Amongst other things it's offering standardised semen testing.""We have three labs where everyone is doing the same thing, following the same protocols. They've been trained in the same way and we exchange reference samples to check we're all seeing the same thing and scoring the same thing.""We all talk about how expensive AI programs are...I would argue that you should take a look at the semen that you are going to be using.  Check it for numbers, looks, swimming patterns.... Why not test for those things if they are relatively inexpensive in comparison to a failure?" he asks. Simon delves into the science behind artificial insemination and he and Mark discuss the future of AI. Currently work is going on to facilitate cervical AI in sheep with frozen semen. De boog kan helaas niet altijd gespannen zijn. Tussen een prof en een amateur zijn er een paar dingen gelijk in het leven: je wordt geboren, je gaat dood en daar tussenin moet je schakelen op je fiets. ‘Zin om te fietsen, geen zin om te fietsen. Toch gaan. Jezelf op die fiets trekken.' Deze woorden ken je als het goed is ondertussen wel, maar is dat niet heel makkelijk praten van Bolt? Wat als dit bij Op1 was gebeurd, een talkshow zonder reclameblokken? Was het een effectieve actie? En zouden media niet terughoudender moeten zijn met hun aandacht voor dit soort acties? De energiecrisis, de klimaatcrisis, de coronacrisis, de stikstofcrisis.. Zomaar een paar van de crises waar we ons anno 2022 in bevinden. Maar hoe uniek is onze huidige crisistijd eigenlijk? En hoe sloegen we ons vroeger door barre tijden, catastrofes, rampen en andere grote ellende? Dat bespreekt historica Beatrice de Graaf in haar essay voor de Maand van de Geschiedenis, met de titel Crisis. Ze is te gast.

De mobilisatie in Rusland is begonnen en de ernst daarvan dringt door tot steeds meer gewone Russen. Sinds de aankondiging van president Poetin woensdag gaat het snel: protesten, volgeboekte vluchten, files aan de grenzen en ook al de eerste bussen op weg naar trainingskampen. Vandaag zijn de zogenoemde referenda van start gegaan, waardoor grote stukken van Oekraïne door Rusland geannexeerd gaan worden en de oorlog dus ook deels gevoerd zal worden op wat Poetin ziet als Russisch grondgebied. Tot nu toe werd in de oorlog gevochten door vrijwillige Russische soldaten, maar dat verandert. Reservisten worden opgeroepen én ook allerlei andere mensen zonder militaire ervaring. The topic of sweet taste and the relationship to diet and health is one that has been of interest to food and nutrition scientists for many years. To assist in reducing sugar consumption, some authoritative bodies currently recommend reducing the consumption of sweet-tasting foods and beverages, regardless of the source of the sweet taste (i.e., caloric or low-calorie sweeteners). These recommendations stem from concerns that human attraction to sweetness may be a potential risk for developing less healthy eating patterns. Despite the need to measure sweetness of the diet to help us further understand the relationship between nutrition and health and sweetness, currently there is no consensus method to measure the total sweetness of the diet. There are well-established sensory techniques in laboratory settings for individual foods, but agreement on the optimal approach for measuring the sweetness of the total diet is lacking, particularly for large-scale population-based studies. Recently a practical approach for estimating sweetness of the diet was built onto a sweet taste database to evaluate trends in the sweetness of the diet in U.S. children and adults. This method can also be used to better understand the impact of dietary sweetness on diet quality and health outcomes.
