Marianne Daniels is an engineer who's worked in the automotive industry for her whole career. Starting as a quality engineer on the shop floor she's since worked in manufacturing, supplier quality, purchasing, programme management, and new vehicle launch.One of her earliest roles was as a process engineer for V8 Jaguar engines, and her current role is head of supplier quality for electric vehicle propulsion, so her career spans the industrial revolution from combustion engines to electrification.Along the way against this technical backdrop she's led business transformation, driven culture change, inclusion, talent development, and immersed herself in coaching – gaining a coaching qualification and putting this into practise to shape her leadership style.In our conversation we talk about Marianne's childhood in Torbay, on the English Riviera and how she excelled in maths and physics at school, leading to a mechanical engineering degree at Birmingham University. Her career began at Rover Group, where she faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated environment. She later moved to Ford Bridgend and then Jaguar Land Rover, where she held various roles, including supplier technical assistance and program management. Despite setbacks, such as a difficult line manager and pneumonia, she rebuilt her confidence through coaching and leadership programs. The end of summer brings fewer tourists to St. John's, which leads to difficulty for many small business in the fall and winter months. Cory Byrne, a co-owner of the Post Taphouse in Torbay, Martin Hurley, the owner of Hurley's Barbeque food truck, and Jessica Holmes, the owner of Arbour restaurant in Bay Bulls, joined us in studio to share the difficulties small business can face in the winter months.

Slatton were honored to welcome Norman McNamara the founder of the Purple Angel Foundation as our guest to the show.     About Norman McNamara & the Purple Angel Foundation:   The Purple Angel was born on 12th January 2012. It was formed as a steering group to try and make Torbay the first dementia-fNorrm began by asking his local shop staff to read 2 pieces of information so that they could better support people with dementia and their carers. He wrote the “Guide to Understanding Dementia” and put that together with “What is Dementia” written by our Alzheimer's Society. Two weeks later he returned and, if staff had read, awarded a Purple Angel Logo for their window.   Through Facebook, Norrm met many who wanted to join in. The purple angel was named because Norrm fondly refers to his wife Elaine as “his angel”!   On the 16th of November, 2013, the first 50 worldwide ambassadors were inaugurated in Paignton, Devon, UK. There are now well over 1000 ambassadors, all with their own teams of volunteer-friendly resorts in the country.   Norman McNamara a resident of Torbay, Devon, UK was diagnosed with dementia at only 50 years of age. Whilst out shopping one day he was rudely spoken to by a shopkeeper and decided to change the way people see dementia and treat others.   Many towns in the UK began raising awareness with The Purple Angel, taking the information to their local shops and businesses. On a Facebook “Dementia Aware” page many others began to form dementia-friendly communities and were inspired by the success of the project.   Many Purple Angel Dementia Action Alliances now have their own steering groups and the word is spreading to other areas. It became apparent that many other organizations needed to be included such as hospitals, first responders, rescue services, schools, scouts, etc. and resources were developed to address different situations. Steve Darling is not the first visually impaired MP, but he is the latest, after winning Torbay in Devon for the Liberal Democrats in July's general election. In Touch speaks to Steve about the excitements and challenges of taking up his new role in the Mother of parliaments.In Touch visits an archaeological dig site in Cookham, where an 8th century monastery is being excavated. Our main interest there, aside from the various skull and bone discoveries, is visually impaired Jonathan Charmley. Jonathan has always had a keen interest in history and decided to begin an archaeology course at university. During his studies, he lost most of his vision as the result of a brain tumour. Leslie Woodford from Torbay recently got back from Japan, and it was a trip that marked a big step in a friendship that started thirty years ago. Now the dust has settled after the 2024 general election, Devoncast looks back at how the night unfolded across the county. It all started at 3am in Torbay, where Liberal Democrat Steve Darling hailed a 'Lib-Demolition' after he had vanquished Tory incumbent Kevin Foster. With a general election a certainty at some point this year, two recent developments have alarmed organisations representing disabled people. Before 2020, there was a fund that provided financial aid to disabled people running for elective office, but that fund has not yet been reinstated. And also: its being argued that in the Prime Minister's latest cabinet reshuffle, the role of Minister for Disabled People has been downgraded.We discuss what these developments mean for visually impaired people. November 9 1996, three brothers spend the day with their non custodial father at his home in Torbay, Newfoundland. An hour before the boys were scheduled to be returned to their mother, she received a phone call from her estranged husband telling her he was not going to return the boys to her and had rigged his house to explode if anyone entered it. Despite the passage of over 25 years the father nor the three boys have been seen again.
