With the help of POLITICO Foreign and Defense Correspondent Esther Webber, she pieces together Starmer's legacy on the world stage.  Olivia O'Sullivan, director of UK in a Changing World at Chatham House, says the Prime Minister has managed to secure "the least worst option" with Donald Trump.  And Peter Ricketts, former head of the U.K.'s diplomatic service, said the shift towards “a hyper-personalized world” demands Starmer's presence. “Unless you are in the room with Donald Trump, you're not influencing him," Ricketts added. In this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair speak with Andrew Willard Jones about how to live humanly within the empire of modernity. Andrew traces his journey, from a secular upbringing, to embracing the Catholic tradition and a deep commitment to family and community. An exceptional thinker among a new generation of Catholic theologians, he explores how modernity and its liberalisms have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of the world and what it means to be human. But this is no retreat into religious or academic abstraction. Andrew lives and works daily in a growing community embodying a shared Christian life—an “other kingdom” that echoes Augustine in our age of unravelling. This conversation reveals a cosmic dimension to everyday life: a way of living shaped by the love of God has the potential to transform all of society. It also raises urgent questions for churches, parishes, and Christian communities in this post-liberal moment. If what's at stake is humanity itself, then our response must be rooted in love and friendship, not power or control.Andrew Willard Jones is a political theologian whose work is primarily concerned with historical political theology and with the reconciliation of the post-modern with the pre-modern. He is currently Professor of History and Political Theory and Academic Dean at The College of St. Joseph the Worker in Ohio, a new college teaching students the Catholic intellectual tradition while training them in skilled and dignified labour. A founding editor of the journal New Polity, his writing is recognised as having broken new ground in Catholic political thought, and he lectures widely, in both academic and ecclesial contexts. The author of many books, Andrew holds a PhD in Medieval History from Saint Louis University with a focus on the Church of the High Middle Ages. He and his wife Sara are busy raising their eleven children in Steubenville, Ohio.LinksFor Andrew Willard Jones:https://www.collegeofstjoseph.com/academic-facultyhttps://newpolity.com/podcasts-hub/church-against-statehttps://newpolity.com/podcasts-hub/meet-andrew-willard-joneshttps://newpolity.com/blog?author=5bbdf5b7e4966bea2acb7deeBooks:The Church Against the State: On Subsidiarity and Sovereignty (New Polity, 2025)The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics (Emmaus Road Publishing, 2021)Before Church and State: A Study of Social Order in the Sacramental Kingdom of St. Louis IX, (Emmaus Academic, 2017)Evidence of Things Unseen: An Introduction to Fundamental Theology (Emmaus Road, 2019)The Word Became Flesh: An Introduction to Christology (Emmaus Road, 2019)This Is My Body: An Introduction to Ecclesiology (Emmaus Road, 2019)Catholic Topical Index (Verbum, 2013)For Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/aboutFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetworkBooksForming Communities of Hope in the Great Unravelling: Leadership in a Changing World (with Roy Searle)Joining God in the Great UnravellingLeadership, God's Agency and DisruptionsJoining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our TimeFor Jenny Sinclair:Substack: https://t4cg.substack.com/s/from-jenny-sinclairWebsite: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/ Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

"Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today

February 3, 2026 Daily Devotional: “The Anchor in a Changing World”Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."   To exist in a world of "planned obsolescence." Your smartphone will be slow in two years, fashion trends cycle out in months, and even our own tastes and feelings can shift like the wind. Change is the only constant we're told toexpect. In the middle of this whirlwind, Hebrews 13:8 drops an anchor. It tells us that while everything else is in flux, the character, power, and love of Jesus Christ are immutable. Yesterday; He is the one who walked on water, healed the broken, and conquered the grave. His track record isproven. Today; He is the same High Priest who intercedes for you right now, in this very minute, with the same compassion He had for the crowds in Galilee. And forever; No matter what the future holds, technologicalshifts, political upheavals, or personal losses, His promises have no expiration date. Think of a mathematical constant or a physical law. Gravity doesn't take a day off because it's "feeling tired." In an even deeper way, Jesus cannot be anything other than who He is. He is the reliable constant, if He was faithful to your ancestors, He is faithful to you. If He was enough for the early church facing persecution, He is enough for your current stress. His "sameness" isn't a sign of boredom; it's a sign of reliability. You don't have to wonder which version of God you're going to get today. He doesn't have "off days." When life feels unpredictable, use the "Yesterday, Today, Forever" framework to re-center. Recall Yesterday by writing down one time in the past where God provided for you or gave you peace. That same God is with you now. Trust that today in acknowledging the specific chaos of today, then say aloud: "Jesus, You are the same today as You were when You calmed the storm." Secure the forever when you worry about next year or the next decade, remind yourself that He is already there.

Kristen Welch is an author, speaker, and the founder of Mercy House Global, but her story is shaped less by achievement and more by surrender. Raised in a generous, Christian home, Kristen followed God's lead into ministry, writing, and motherhood. Her love for writing led her into the early Christian mom-blogging world where she found community and influence, but it was a 2010 blogging trip to Kenya with Compassion International that unsettled her faith and reordered her calling. That encounter became the catalyst for Mercy House Global and for a lifelong journey of learning what it means to say yes to God with open hands.   Through Mercy House, Kristen has spent the past fifteen years walking alongside vulnerable women and families through job creation, orphan prevention, and discipleship, both globally and locally. Along the way, she has learned that generosity and ministry busyness without intimacy with God can quietly hollow out the soul. Her story reflects the cost of faithful work, the danger of doing for God without being with Him, and the grace God offers through rest, repentance, and renewed friendship with Him.   This conversation invites all of us to reflect on how God calls us to slow down, reorient our hearts, and rediscover satisfaction in His presence while living generously.   Major Topics Include: Generosity in hospitality Obedience through small, faithful yeses Using influence for Kingdom purpose Serving without losing intimacy with God The danger of doing for God without being with God Identity rooted in sonship, not productivity Parenting through embodied generosity Slowing down to practice God's presence QUOTES TO REMEMBER “Just do the next right thing.” “We were always looking for ways to use what we had for the gospel of hospitality.” “The opportunity to use the writing skill and the blog platform for God's glory really became a sweet spot for me and it changed my life.” “I will spend the rest of my life answering the question, ‘what am I doing to help the vulnerable in our communities and in our world?'” “God used the poor to help me find Him in a new way.” “God doesn't need us to do any of this, He invites us to do it.” “Being with God is the best use of our time.” “It is not a waste of time to spend time with God.” “When we live as generous people, our kids will too.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Mercy House Global Kristen Welch's Website Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch Raising World Changers in a Changing World by Kristen Welch Compassion International When Helping Hurts (see our interview with coauthor Brian Fikkert) Women Doing Well (see our interview with president Julie Wilson) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Revelation 3:20 | Christ's Invitation to Intimacy   Behold, I stand at the door and knock. As the number of living Holocaust survivors declines, a profound question emerges: who carries these stories next – and how do we ensure they are heard, understood, and acted upon? In this episode, timed to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27th, James and David are joined by Hannah Wilson, Outreach Officer at the charity Generation to Generation, alongside two G2G speakers, Vivienne Cato and and Calum Isaacs, who share their own family histories as descendants of Holocaust survivors. (You can read about their stories here https://www.generation2generation.org.uk/the-story-of-mirjam-finkelstein and here https://www.generation2generation.org.uk/holocaust-survivor-eva-cato). Together, they explore how Holocaust education remains as important, powerful and relevant for young people today – not as mere knowledge of the history, but as lived experience passed from one generation to the next. Vivienne shares the story of her mother Eva, a Slovak Jewish survivor who spent years in hiding under a false identity, and reflects on her experience of growing up in the shadow of survival, luck, and loss. Calum tells the story of his grandmother Mirjam, who survived Nazi persecution through a series of extraordinary events – including a last-minute prisoner exchange – and considers how those near-misses shape identity, values, and responsibility across generations. The conversation also examines: Why Holocaust education matters more than ever How personal testimony cuts through misinformation, distortion, and online extremism The role of ordinary people, bystanders, and complicity – not just dictators – in enabling atrocities Why students often respond with quiet focus, empathy, and deep moral questioning How Holocaust education connects to wider conversations about racism, antisemitism, democracy, and civic responsibility today Hannah reflects on what good Holocaust education looks like in practice, the challenges teachers face, and why grounding learning in real human stories helps young people develop critical thinking, empathy, and historical understanding – without reducing education to moral instruction or political indoctrination. This episode is about remembrance with purpose: how bearing witness is not only about preserving the past, but about shaping the kind of future we want to live in – and the small actions that can make a decisive difference. Jide, a second-generation British Nigerian from South London, brings grounded experience and deep reflection as a writer, thinker, and youth leader, offering unique insight into the UK's cultural and spiritual landscape. Harvey, a Malawian missionary now based in Liverpool, works across the UK, Europe, and North America, and writes on African theology and God's mission in the West. They sense that the Enlightenment's legacy has weakened the West's ability to comprehend the nature of the Spirit—while for much of African Christianity this is still instinctive. As we undergo this change of era, they see the UK wrestling with identity and a growing spiritual yearning presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for church leaders. Together with Al and Jenny, they discuss how the migration of African Christians to the UK may be the Spirit's way of catalysing a sacramental spirituality that British culture has lost. Examining how guest and host can practice hospitality to each other, they explore how cultural barriers can be bridged to foster both a sense of belonging and an openness to encounter the Spirit in everyday life.Harvey Kwiyani works for the Church Mission Society (CMS) in Oxford, UK, where he leads a study centre for global witness and human migration and a Masters programme in African Christianity. Where did the concept of management as a profession come from, and how did it develop? Why do bureaucratic practices persist? How can companies break free from those constraints to unlock greater potential and adapt more effectively to the relentless change and competition in today's business world?Gary Hamel is the founder of the Management Lab, a professor at the London Business School, a visiting professor at the University of Oxford, and the author of several books. His recent titles include Humanocracy, Creating Organizations as Amazing as the People Inside Them, What Matters Now: How to Win in a World of Relentless Change, Ferocious Competition, and Unstoppable Innovation, and Competing for the Future.Greg and Gary discuss the evolution of Gary's thinking on management over the years and the detrimental effects of entrenched bureaucratic systems in organizations. He argues that bureaucracy stifles innovation, efficiency, and human engagement, leading him to suggest that organizations need to adopt more human-centric, dynamic, and decentralized models. He also points out the eventual trajectory of all companies that don't follow this path.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why organizations stop being technical and start being bureaucratic08:29: I don't think administrative skills are any more a competitive advantage. You need them, but they are not much of a differentiator. So far as I can see, they are not really a source of competitive advantage. And yet, given that history of them being so rare, we basically turned our organizations into administrative aristocracies . And so what that meant practically was, once you reached a certain level in an organization, a fairly low level, the only way to advance your career was to become a manager. And that is still true in most organizations. People tend to compete for those jobs because, and I have young friends, and kids and so on who, very capable people worked in organizations, and however capable you are technically, you reach a point where they are coaxing you into an administrative or managerial role as the only way to grow. And the desire to keep great employees and to pay them well means that those positions proliferate. We create more managerial roles because that is the way of rewarding people and escalating their salaries. The radical shift from static hierarchy to dynamic power39:04: I am all for having a hierarchy, but I think it needs to be highly dynamic depending on the issue, and the hierarchy needs to be able to shift also. When people in power are no longer adding value or whatever they need to, you need to be able to fire those people from below. Why traditional leadership programs create administrators, not leaders47:18: In survey after survey, by Fortune, by McKinsey or others, the vast majority of executives do not think leadership development is producing positive returns or noticeably positive returns. And again, I think the reason for that is what we call leadership development is, first of all, almost done completely in the bureaucratic frame. We are not trying to find people with genuine leadership, natural leadership capacity. We are not trying to find people who understand how to mobilize and catalyze others to do things that people thought were impossible. Our leadership training is basically training people to take on bigger administrative jobs and stratified just like the pyramid: managing yourself, managing a team, managing a unit, managing a function, managing the organization. So number one, we have that problem. It is simply replicating, and it is creating better administrators. I do not think the data says that it is creating leaders.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Thomas PaineMax WeberMcKinsey & CompanyJames G. MarchHerbert A. Join the Leaving Egypt community on Substack: leavingegyptpodcast.substack.comIn this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Anne Snyder about the anxieties—and unexpected possibilities—of our volatile moment. Anne doesn't stop at lament or analysis. As she wrestles with the tensions between plurality and unity in a fractured age, her desire to articulate truth in the written word is matched by an instinct for hospitality and the conviction of God's grace underlying our daily lives. Inspired by the integrated witness of Dorothy Day, Anne not only writes and encourages other writers, but organises spaces where people of different perspectives can meet—and, through mutual vulnerability, encounter grace. In conversation with Al and Jenny, Anne reimagines Christian humanism as an “understory” beneath the surface of our divides: a story of local, hidden movements where building, healing, reckoning, and reconciling are the components essential for the common good.Anne Snyder is the editor-in-chief of Comment, a magazine of public theology for the common good and a developing ecosystem of conversation and community. Rooted in the Christian humanist tradition, Comment now encompasses a growing podcast network, gatherings that span grassroots to institutional settings across North America and the UK, and a three-day festival at the Washington National Cathedral. Anne also hosts The Whole Person Revolution podcast and co-edited Breaking Ground: Charting Our Future in a Pandemic Year (2022). Why does it feel like everything is falling apart, even as our lives get materially easier in so many ways? Michael Hyatt talks with author and cultural thinker Virginia Postrel about why progress becomes invisible, how nostalgia for the “good old days” distorts reality, and why modern change moves unevenly. They explore why humans crave beauty and meaning (not just function) and how AI is reshaping the future of work. A clear theme emerges throughout the wide-ranging conversation: change is inevitable, and how we respond matters. Resilience, margin, and an entrepreneurial mindset make all the difference. If you've felt powerless against “big systems,” this episode is a reminder that innovation is often personal, practical, and close to home: start where you are, solve what you can, and expect the unexpected.Memorable Quotes“The issues of character never go away. They are eternal human questions, and we forget because we have sort of nostalgic views of the past.”“Even the smartest AI can't figure out what people want—what people are dissatisfied with. And a lot of innovation comes from that. We tend to focus on big technologies. And even big technologies come from a lot of incremental improvements… A lot of improvements come from people saying, ‘I'm dissatisfied with this,' or ‘Here's something I figured out.'”“Human beings don't just value function. They value pleasure, and they value meaning, and pleasure and meaning are things that are very much conveyed through the look and feel of objects or places.”“Agency is problem-solving. It's you solving problems in your life, or whatever that might be—and it's sort of reversed, too, which is that if you assume that it's someone else's job to solve your problem, you sort of give up your sense of agency.” “A lot of leadership is figuring out what gifts individuals have and getting them moving in the right direction… A big part of leadership as problem-solving is people problem-solving—getting people in the right roles and thinking about how those roles mesh.”“Expect that you're going to be in a world that changes, because that's the world we live in. It's the world we've been living in for hundreds of years. The other thing is: understand this didn't start with you. Other people have gone through amazing and scary and terrifying changes, and our civilization has lived to tell the tale.”Key TakeawaysProgress Becomes Invisible Quickly. We normalize improvements fast—and forget what life used to require in drudgery, time, and basic comforts.Change Is Uneven: Bits vs. Atoms. Software accelerates rapidly, while physical-world progress (like housing) can be slowed by policy, cost, and complexity.Dynamism vs. Stasis Shapes How We Face the Future. Some people see change as positive-sum opportunity; others experience it as zero-sum threat.Agency Grows Through Problem-Solving. When we assume “someone else” must fix things, we trade away our sense of control and possibility.Resilience Requires Margin. Financial cushion, emotional bandwidth, and community support help you absorb shocks and adapt.Entrepreneurship Is Bigger Than Business. You can be “entrepreneurial” by starting groups, building community, or solving everyday problems—not just launching companies.Resourcesvpostrel.com (Website)vpostrel.substack.com (Substack Newsletter)The Future and Its Enemies (Book)The Substance of Style (Book)The Power of Glamor (Book)The Fabric of Civilization (Book)Watch on YouTube at:  https://youtu.be/yCMHIdYYS-AThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound

A new report has revealed the challenges relating to technology that Clare parents are grappling with. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Schooldays.ie, which is a website that provides resources to parents and teachers, has published a report highlighting the views and experience of parents in Ireland. The 'Parents Of Ireland Survey 2026' features responses for 1,878 parents nationwide on a range of issues. These include special educational needs, mental health services, reform of the Junior and Leaving Cert, bullying, mobile phones, the Irish language, parenting styles and family finances. Owner of SchoolDays.ie, Richard Murphy, says he hopes the report lays bare the challenges faced by parents in a rapidly changing world. A key finding of the survey is that almost 30% of parents have had to seek an assessment of need for their child and of these, one in four have found the experience to be 'very poor'. More than a quarter have said their child has had to look for mental health services and 30% of these deemed the process 'terrible', with over 60% forced to wait six months or more. In addition, just under 30% of respondents said the exam points system is 'not very fair' to those with additional needs. Deputy Assistant General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland, and teacher at St Flannan's College in Ennis, John Conneely, claims schools aren't sufficiently equipped to support students who require extra assistance.

Few areas of modern American popular culture have undergone greater or more rapid changes in recent years that college sports. Thanks to a series of successful legal challenges, the nation's longstanding practice of treating college athletes as amateurs has been completely upended and, especially at big schools engaged high-profile sports like football and basketball, teams have become professionalized, with many athletes switching schools yearly, and raking in multi-million dollar deals under so-called “name image and likeness.” In a time of such rapid change and upheaval, it comes as little surprise that many people who were used to how things once worked – be they university leaders or average citizens and sports fans — are experiencing a sense of disorientation and discomfort. And this fact was made clear in some opinion surveys conducted last October by the Elon University Poll and the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, and at that time, NC Newsline caught up with the Elon poll director, Prof. Jason Husser, to learn more. Now that we are in the midst of the college football bowl season, we thought it would be an ideal time to revisit that interview and the poll findings. In this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with John Clifton about his experiences as a Salvation Army leader among people in the margins. In a sense, this is what you would expect from a Salvation Army officer. But give this a careful listen: John is also a deeply informed thinker and theologian with vital insights for the church today. In Christian circles lately there is much being said and written about two contrasting conversations: the quiet revival of young adults coming to certain kinds of churches, and the confusion and fear surrounding the recent conversions of controversial figures like Tommy Robinson and others at the margins—people who have had little to do with church and Christian life. John has important things to say about what is happening here and about why we should listen to what the Spirit is saying from the culture to the churches. John calls the church to return to its working-class roots, for relational spaces where Christ is encountered in the powerless, for the fostering of solidarity, and for local economic renewal.Captain John Clifton is a Salvation Army officer, ordained minister, and theologian based in North Shields, North East England. He serves as the Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army's North East Division, overseeing operations across the region, focusing on spiritual guidance, community outreach, and social services. His work emphasizes the Church's engagement in public life and society, particularly supporting communities affected by debt, hunger, homelessness, and unemployment. He collaborates on initiatives for justice, reconciliation, and empowering local leadership through broad-based community organizing. Academically, John researches systematic theology, exploring the transformative power of compassionate acts and social encounters. His doctoral thesis was titled “Producing Christ in the World: a study of Christian action in terms of the Homeless Man as a Christological paradigm of powerlessness.” He writes on faith, theology, and faithful action via his Substack, Christ in the Margins, and has previously led Salvation Army corps in places like Ilford (East London) and Blackpool (North West England). The youngest son of General Shaw Clifton, John has made a lifelong commitment to the Salvation Army and lives in North Shields near Newcastle with his wife Naomi and their young family. When I visited the Gulf Coast of Florida, I got to see a couple of glorious earth turns. The sky was ablaze with color and the sun disappeared on the horizon. You say, "Excuse me, Ron, that's a sunset." Hey, wait a minute. Are you from the 14th century or something? The sun doesn't set, it doesn't move! The earth moves! As it makes its revolution, your point on earth turns away from the sun every 24 hours. So that would be an earth turn, right? And we say the sun sets. Well, the earth is turning and you can see how mankind got it wrong for so many centuries. I mean, it looks as if the sun is revolving around the earth. It revolutionized a lot of thinking when people finally understood what was revolving around what. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Changing World, Unchanging Truth." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from 2 Timothy 3:16. It says this: "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." Verse 17: "so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." Now, what this is really saying is the Bible is the sun - God's unchanging, unmoving truth. Everything else has to revolve around what God's Word says. God's Word on any subject is the final word. If you read this passage, it's written in the context of a time when Paul is predicting that moral values will be in total confusion, when wrong's going to seem right, when what's right will seem wrong. Doesn't that sound familiar? It's a time when imposters and false ideas will be deceiving many people. And so God's instructions to Timothy are, "You continue in what you've learned and become convinced of what you've learned from infancy - the Holy Scriptures." In other words, you've got to stay where you are. Don't let anything make you compromise on what God's Word says. It's unsettling to see that some research indicates that only about a fourth of America's Christians are sure there's absolute truth. We're shaky on this authority issue, especially when it comes to areas that cramp our style or require us to change or go against what our group or our culture says is true today. We sometimes try to make our idea the sun, and then we try to make the Bible a planet that revolves around it. We put more weight on what is politically correct or culturally correct than what is biblically correct. In academic circles, for example, there's this subtle temptation to submit the Bible to whatever your discipline is, whether that's the current trend in sociology, or literature, or the arts, or science. Well, you've got to submit your discipline to the Bible. God's Word is the final word of origin of the universe and the origin of man. And any explanation that says God did anything other than instantly creating a fully developed adult is wrong. God's Word is the final word on divorce, on re-marriage, on sexuality, whether it's hetero or homosexuality. Or what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a man. It's the final word on justice, on wealth, on sex, on the value of an unborn life. No mental contortions can neutralize God's authoritative Word on the subject. You do no one a favor by trying to make God's Word more acceptable by diluting what it says. We stand on this book, and I hope every day as we're together this book becomes more practical and more living in your life. The planets in our world are in chaos as human wisdoms are confusing, they're colliding. But God gave us this brilliant sun, one settled, unmoving, always true authority to keep the planets in the orbits they belong in - the Word of Almighty God, the Bible. People came out of the dark ages when they realized that the sun did not revolve around them. We come out of the darkness when we realize and we never compromise the final centrality of the Bible in our personal universe, and when we put the planets of all those other ideas where they belong - in orbit around the sun of the Word of God.
