It's back! After three years away, the Steel City Beer and Cider Festival finally returns at Kelham Island museum in Sheffield.James and Laura lead our special episode recorded on the opening night on Wednesday 19 October, with a bit of Sean thrown in when we can peel him away from his hostess with the mostest duties.Plus we have a fine line-up of guests throughout the episode.Depending when you listen to this - still plenty of time to get down to the festival, which runs until Saturday.
We're back after a longer than anticipated summer break and it's all change - we're binning off beer and chugging cider instead. James, Adam, Laura and Sean head to The Cider Hole in Kelham Island to meet Mike and try three very different and unusual drinks. It's described as 'Sheffield's only urban micro-cidery & bar'. This one is a real journey!
Welcome to the first in a new series and direction for the Points of Brew podcast as I am joined by new co-host Aaron Getliffe, brewer from Quirky Ales in Garforth. As part of this new direction and series of regular shows, we will be drinking beers out and about at various pubs, bars and breweries across Yorkshire and beyond (hopefully). This first episode sees us recording at Yorkshire Craft Beers in Castleford as it is not only the workplace of me, Stephen, but it is also where I met Aaron which we discuss on the show. Whilst there we drink the latest collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Adnams, Eastern Edge, a 4.8% Transatlantic Pale Ale. As part of this new format, we will also discuss a central theme or topic of discussion whilst we are at our recording venue. Sadly in this first episode we discuss the closure of some breweries in recent weeks including Kelham Island and Beatnikz Republic and the hardships which they, and everyone else, are facing right now. Thanks to Yorkshire Craft Beers for hosting us and we hope you like the new format and style! If you have any feedback, comments or suggestions as to where we should go next, please send them to pointsofbrew@gmail.com

Paradise Loops is a weekly groove infused mix series aimed to provide a backdrop of balearic, anthemic and nostalgic sounds on those sun-soaked glory days. "Producing and mixing has been the story of lockdown for me, so to be given a concept for this mix filled me with enthusiasm. The mix follows a walk for me from my flat on Dun Street in Kelham Island, Sheffield, across the river Don and all the way to the crescendo at the summit of Parkwood Springs. There's floaty emotive pads and melodies throughout, ending in a flurry of breaks as the sun sets behind the hill top." - DJ Wanderlei (@djwanderlei) Tracklist: Earth Trax - Inside Out Brawther - Deep Down Paris Misiu - Cascade Foals - Dreaming Of (Joe Corti Remix) Khotin - Dream Mentor Thundercat, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil B - Fair Chance (Floating Points Remix) John Beltran - Highway Carmel - Georgia (R.A.N.D Mix) Seb Wildblood - Hazy House Vol 1 Dylan Forbes - Hold On To Forever Tom VR - Fast Track To Bliss NIDIA - Nunun YAK - Wide Eyes Ramadanman - Don't Change For Me
Luci from Shakespeares in Kelham Island is our guest, so we take the opportunity to celebrate women in beer on this week's episode. Sean tells the longest story ever to introduce his beer selection, but it's worth it. PLUS - we have details of the Sheffield Hopfest coming up in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! We've got the dates, the details of the sessions and most importantly the info on how you can get involved. Please come along and join for a beer as we all help each other get through these tough times. Safe safe, and stay brilliant.
On the title alone this episode may not seem to fit this podcast and the opposite is the case. As an evidence based practitioner my guest (Rob Baker) is right at home and his work is ultimately about how people feel about their jobs and their work. We cover a LOT of ground in this episode and on a personal note Rob's reply to my unexpected and innocuous question is a complete surprise and I learn a lot about him. The show notes as always are below: Around 3 minutes we discuss the Fat Cat on Kelham Island in Sheffield https://www.thefatcat.co.uk/ Around 5 minutes Rob talks about how he competed for GB at orienteering, you can find out more here https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/ Around 8 minutes I mention the awesome human being called Simon Heath who is a Consulting Artist and has some sensible and practical thinking on the workplace. Jack Whitham: Football legend for Sheffield Wednesday, Liverpool, England under 23's and others. A lifetime of devotion to Football, to his family, his talent for writing a good song and for performing them too. His career was curtailed by tragedy but Jack has risen above that through a determination and spirit that encompasses all the many walks of his life.
Recorded entirely in Room 324 by kind permission of the Holiday Inn overlooking Brentford Lock in London, Jorge Ramirez displays vividly why his music and good humour helps to fill restaurants and pubs wherever he plays. Jorge is a long-time friend who I don't see enough of. He also attempted to improve my guitar playing...Hmmmm...
This time the Urban Tiger is in conversation with Stewart Lodge, a comedy practitioner who defies convention and genre. There is a thin line between comedy weird and comedy genius and I think Stewart stands astride that line in a way that I respect and admire. Especially when he performs 'Little Johnny Cash'. See if you can categorise his talent, I can't...
"Young people are taught to be good at exams, but with very little context of how what they’ve learned will apply to real life," according to Jon Maiden, co-founder and CEO of Panjango. That means, he says, they don't have the skills they need for work and society, for the jobs of today, and the new jobs of the future. But serial social entrepreneur Jon has come up with a powerful, immersive and playful route for children to explore the sometimes mysterious world of work.Jon joined me in the Sheffield Live radio studio this morning and brought with him Panjango's beautifully designed board and card games, The Panjango Game and Panjango Trumps. They've been created thanks to support from The Young Foundation, and are now available to order via Kickstarter. The games look fantastic and are designed to enable give young people the knowledge, skills and experience to find their purpose and fulfill their potential.Listen to the interview with Jon, below, to hear more about Panjango's games and the philosophy behind them – it was a wide ranging chat. We also covered:being "smarter than a 10 year old" and the balance between intelligence and imagination, developing "four dimensional skills" for the future, including for jobs which don't yet exist,Panjango Trumps are a world first – and they include metrics for the social impact of a variety of roles (which I loved), as well as other numbers you might expect to find on the cards,Jon's previous work as a social entrepreneur and development director of Point Blank Theatre Company, which bought The Riverside pub in Kelham Island when it was a struggling pub and ran it as a flourishing community venue with a diverse range of activities, access to funding for startup social entrepreneurs, with shout-outs for UnLtd and Awards for All.This week's show is dedicated to Phil Baldwin, a much loved colleague and friend at Sheffield Live. We are all shocked and devastated by his passing. Thank-you, Phil, for your kindness, humour, support for your colleagues and ready wit, and determination to do things well. You will be missed.Timings:0 - 3:02 introduction and some words about our Phil,3:02 Jon Maiden,37:40 remembering Phil Baldwin. What next?More about my Business Live radio show, and other podcasts with interesting guests.Panjango on Kickstarter, and on twitter. As mentioned in the show: The Young Foundation, UnLtd and Awards for All.
This time around we have Don Oliver & Bryan Ducker. I have known these two singers for around 28 years, listening to them in various pubs and folk clubs around Sheffield and I thought it was time to dig a little deeper and find out who they are and from what background they came. What a surprise I got! Turns out we are almost related! Have a good laugh and a good listen to Don & Bryan. Many thanks as always to Andy Whitehouse for the loan of his track, Almost Home, for our intro/outro.
This is a conversation with Paul Middleton who fronts what must be my favourite live band of all time, the Angst Band. It must be, I'm a Yorkshireman, and even I pay for a night out in Harrogate several times a year to go and have my ears blasted in The Blues Bar, a unique venue on Montpellier Parade (near Betty's) that has, apart from a strange but welcoming taste in decoration, wall to wall music, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. If you ever wondered what it feels like to be in the middle of a band while they are on stage then get yourself over here... and if you do, stay at The Crown Hotel. It's downhill all the way from The Blues Bar.
Hi. This week's conversation is with Steve Salfield, the inimitable Saxophonist and Jazz Musician. Like many musicians, Steve doesn't limit himself to one band but plays different genres with different, but always excellent, people. During this conversation you will hear from 'Back Seat Jivers', the Rock 'n Roll band that Steve plays with, along with tracks from 'Jet Collective', a band that I feel is almost orchestral in its size, composition and the way it plays jazz-based 'new' music. Topping us off is a track blended from the album 'G.P.S.', which follows a more standard, albeit improvised, take on Jazz. There are even rumours of another incarnation as 'Salfied/Chandler'. In fact, our intro and outro are taken from that very band's CD, 'Free Thought'. Enjoy Steve's Journey through Life, here on Urban Tiger Radio! Playing with Steve in various guises are : Reg & Karen Clegg, Pat Sprakes, Paul Biggin, Wendy Kirkland, Simon Becket, Clive Loveday, Graham Jones, Phil Naylor, Clive Marshall Harvey and Sara Littlefield
Time to get out your foot-stomping boots! Listen here to the epic journey of 'Treebeard', the band that refuses to die, in our conversation with Chris McMahon, Founder, Anchor, and Architect of Reinvention. Treebeard's music crosses boundaries from traditional Celtic reels and jigs to a solid rock performance. This band deserves to be heard live so look them up and go. And don't forget those boots!
Patricio Ormeño. I can't even say it properly but come over here and listen to this lovely man in conversation with The Urban Tiger and his equally lovely music, recorded Live right here in The Lair! Explore how Patricio came to live and love in Sheffield and the driving forces behind his life, hopes and dreams.
My tribute to Pete Smith. Folk singer/songwriter I have known and admired for many years. (Now includes my poem for Annie!) Peter is something of a one-off, in the nicest possible way. Listen, and learn how to live. Bill Allerton
This episode of Kelham Island Discs features Howard Swindells, self-penned musician and lyricist whose alter ego is the driver of a Mobile Library in the north of Scotland. Howard writes about the people he meets and those who are most important in his life, as in 'My Old Lady & Me', written as a Valentine present to his wife. Howard is a mountain runner and trains every day while not out intimidating other motorists on Scotland's famous single track highland roads.
No. 2, An interview with the fabulous Andy Whitehouse, is a welcome addition to my 'Kelham Island Discs' podcasts. For those who don't know, Kelham Island was once at the industrial Heart of Sheffield. The steel production and casting took place down the East End where Hitler failed to bomb them, preferring our town centre instead. I don't know why he did that, the pubs weren't that bad... But the Kelham Island area was the Heart of the engineering section, where the raw steel was actually made into something useful that we could throw back at Hitler! Nowadays, the factories are becoming up-market apartments for overpaid hamsters and students with well-off parents, but having said that, the pubs around there are certainly springing back to life. Not least 'The Gardeners Rest' on Neepsend Lane... of which I own a share! Go and buy beer! Make me rich!
This is the first of my 'Kelham Island Discs' series where I interview local musicians, poets and writers who specialise in performing their own works. Today's podcast is an interview with Welsh Geoff, a well known and greatly enjoyed performer on the Sheffield Folk Scene. His songs are often quirky, but uniquely Welsh (as you might expect) and if you want to hear more or buy a CD please contact Geoff directly on www.welshgeoff.co.uk Listen & Enjoy
