MEP Maria Walsh, has this week launched the EU BlueLightS programme in Ireland funded by the EU Horizon Europe, at the Marine Institute, with schools around Ireland - bringing the blue (ocean, rivers, and lakes) into classrooms. Congratulating Camden Education and the Marine Institute on this collaboration MEP Walsh highlighted the importance of bringing sciences, communications and creativity together to share key messages about climate change and well-being with the wider community. "It is wonderful to see the BlueLightS / Explorers Innovative projects providing schools with an opportunity to develop their skills in design, communications and creativity by introducing climate change topics into the curriculum. Using the arts and story-telling is an excellent way to share key messages about climate change. Showing how marine science can support climate solutions is a fun and engaging way to create and share solutions at a community level", MEP Walsh added. As part of the launch of BlueLightS in Ireland, two schools: Kilglass National School, Galway and Brittas Bay Mixed National School, Wicklow, have recently been awarded funding for the EU BlueLightS Challenge. Schools from Limerick, Dublin and Cork have also been included in receiving support from the BlueLightS / Explorers team in facilitating projects where the students will be using the recently launched Explorers Climate Change Superhero educational resources. It is a brilliant achievement for these schools to be selected. They will be among 32 other schools across Europe who that will also be completing their own projects raising awareness about the "blue" (rivers and the ocean) being included on the curriculum this year," added MEP Walsh The EU BlueLightS/Explorers Innovative project includes completing an all-school project that facilitates reaching out to their wider community to engage in a conversation about the health of their ocean and rivers and incorporating marine themes on the curriculum. Welcoming MEP Walsh to the Marine Institute, Ms Patricia Orme, Director of Corporate Services, said "The Marine Institute have been working with primary schools for nearly 20 years through the Explorers Education Programme and we welcome the opportunity to support the BlueLightS project with the recent development of the Explorers Climate Change modules". Ms Orme added "Providing children and schools with an opportunity to learn about the ships we use for research, monitoring of the health of the ocean through our lab work, and learning about how marine animals are impacted by climate change is important for all of us. It helps us engage with communities and improve our understanding of our impact on the ocean - and to understand how the ocean impacts our lives". The primary school classes that take part in the project will work with the Explorers outreach teams and BlueLightS team where they will tell their climate stories through the arts and creative writing. A special book will be created showcasing a selection of the children's creative work and later presented to the schools and key stakeholders across Europe. Bernard Kirk, CEO of Camden Education, further highlighted that the collaboration with the Marine Institute is transforming how we teach climate change and sustainability. "By providing teachers with real-life marine examples and resources that align with the new primary school curriculum and the secondary school climate change subject, BlueLightS helps students develop a deeper understanding of these crucial topics. This helps build a foundation for a generation committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing the impacts of climate change." Primary schools are invited to apply to have a class participate in the EU BlueLightS/Explorers Innovative pilot project, by contacting the Explorers team. The schools selected will have an Explorers team member visit their class and assist in the delivery of the module. BlueLightS is an EU Horizon...
Greg Orme is a global educator and author of Business Book of the Year, "The Human Edge." 'The Human Edge' focused on the fearful narrative that was and is growing around the use and development of AI. If we challenge AI on it's own ground we will certainly lose, Greg explains. Greg's book researched how leaders can differentiate themselves in this world of AI and digitisation. He constructed the 4C's Consciousness - which is finding meaning and vision and a sense of purpose in your work Curiosity - to ask better questions and change faster than the world is changing around you Creativity - the process of having good ideas that work in the world and Collaboration - how can you form collaborations with fellow human beings and AI too, to get your ideas into the world. The rate of change and development in this arena continues to increase. We only experienced the release of Chat GPT just over 800 days ago and now we have the announcement of 'Stargate' and the release of 'Deepseek'. Do leaders still think that AI is a fad and will dwindle over time? The strange answer is yes. The reality is very different and leaders have to grasp the importance of human centred leadership as a superpower. Greg explains we are at the bottom of the 'S' curve in the development of AI and what got us here is becoming exponential in growth especially with the introduction of quantum computing. Ai used properly can increase productivity by 40% giving us all more time. The question is what do we focus on in that time? This is where the human centric leadership skills play their part. Think of AI not as your auto-pilot but as your co-pilot. We must thrive in the knowledge that we can't stop AI. It will be more intelligent than humans possibly by 2027 and we will make mistakes along the way. No one can forecast where the destination is. Is super intelligence capable of consciousness? Will humans become the weakest link? Will AI consider the eradication of humans as the simplest answer to stop war, violence, global warming, exploitation and other human based issues?

For people in medieval England, the parish church was an integral part of their community. In Going to Church in Medieval England (Yale University Press, 2021), Nicholas Orme describes how parish churches operated and details the roles they played in the lives of their parishioners. While there was a considerable variety of experience over the centuries and between the parishes throughout England, the basic practices in them largely remained the same. These were supervised by a range of people, both lay and clerical, who staged the Mass and managed the church's everyday operations. Their activities touched on the lives of the members of the community in a variety of ways, from regular attendance at daily and weekly services to celebrations marking the seasons and the great events of life: birth, coming of age, marriage, and comfort in sickness and death. And while the English Reformation transformed the relationship between England and the Roman Catholic Church, Orme shows how some of the changes associated with it were already underway before it began, while much of what went on in parish churches remained as before. We know that in 2021 workers returned from the pandemic to a workplace with new demands; mounting demands for corporate leaders to take concrete steps to promote racial equity, social justice, and beyond. Those calls were clear and organizations responded, but that doesn't mean it's been an easy journey along the way. Today's guest knows that quite well. Ashley Marchand Orme - JUST Capital's director of equity initiatives - is an expert on data-backed corporate diversity insights. She has a wealth of experience leading DEI efforts in board-level oversight. Her background as a journalist and an editor lends a unique perspective to her work. In the last decades of the fifteenth century, life in England was finally starting to settle down after years of upheaval and conflict during the Wars of the Roses which had riven society since the mid 1450s. Waves of Plague had decimated the population, causing widespread distress but providing unexpected opportunities for those who survived. The cultural and political landscape were ripe for change. This week's guest, the distinguished historian Nicholas Orme, takes us back to this time. He guides us back to 1480, a year he describes as being ‘on the cusp'. ‘It is not exactly a year of great achievement', he argues, but in England it was ‘a year of great promise.' Nicholas Orme is Emeritus Professor of History at Exeter University, he has written more than thirty books. Tudor Children, his latest, takes the reader from birth to adulthood through the themes of work, play, religion and education. For more, as ever, visit our website: tttpodcast.com.
