Elizabeth Louis joins us this week as we discuss “thinking traps” and how they affect your thoughts, performance and outlook. She and Dave talk about positive psychology and how shifting your thinking makes for a more positive mindset. Liz also talks about having a framework to create change and the importance of positive self-talk.
We spend so much time waiting for things to turn out as we want them to. There is a constant demand made upon life that it fulfill "my" wishes... And when it doesn't, when something unexpected or unwanted wanted happens, we start to fight it, try to change it, feel like failures. Then we spend endless time trying to figure out what things turned out that way. Of course there is no logical, rational answer. What we do not realize is that each moment is always fresh and different. What we wanted one moment changes the next. What we didn't want also changes. The art is to enjoy each moment that comes and that goes, to allow it to teach us, enrich us. As we sit we learn to see the freshness, not only of each moment, but of our lives, not blur everything together. A wonderful saying is: "If I have not seen you for three days, it cannot be said I now know you."

Famed author of 'McMindfulness' returns to the podcast to discuss his latest article 'How the Life Coaching Industry Sells Pseudo-Solutions to Our Deepest Problems': "The cultural pressures to become a self-made individual have intensified at the same time that sources of social support have decreased. Enter the life coach." We discuss the many issues surrounding life coaches, credentialism (or lack of it) and how the industry is underpinned by the deeply flawed 'science' of Positive Psychology (and founding father Martin Seligman's troubling statements). Today, I'm talking to Elle Mace – Coach & Mentor, Master Practitioner in Eating disorders, obesity and body dysmorphia; Nutrition and weight management therapist as well as a life and positive psychology coach. Previously, Elle has worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, having a passion for health and fitness. Elle is a returning guest to the Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast and if you'd like to hear about her recovery story, you can listen to her previous episode – link is in the show notes. In the past, Elle struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food and her body, this starting at the tender age of ten years old, when she received unwanted comments about her body. Clearly, this had a huge impact on Elle's body image and self-esteem, and she began to starve herself, and then understandably fell into binge eating. Then, over several years, she fell into destructive eating disorder cycles impacting her physical and mental wellbeing. Fast forward a few years, and Elle decided that ‘enough was enough'. She had to free herself from the food demons and fall back in love with her body and with herself. It wasn't an easy journey. It took much strength, determination and self-care – and bravely moving away from the seductions of dieting. I'm pleased to say that today, Elle is in a very different place. She now uses her experience, qualifications and knowledge to help others heal their relationship with food, their bodies and ultimately themselves. She brings much passion and enthusiasm in her work in supporting others, after walking this path herself and knowing that real recovery is possible. In this episode, Elle talks about the use of positive psychology as a tool in eating disorder recovery. She talks affirmations, toxic positivity, body image, the conscious versus the unconscious mind and more. This is an episode to inspire hope and motivation on your healing journey and it will equip you with some practical tools to help you on the way. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. What is a flourishing community? What does it look like and how do we build it? Last week, I started my Master's in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. And after my first intensive, I'm already in awe of the power of community building made available to us when we engage in communication, collaboration, and lifelong learning. I was surrounded by classmates from diverse backgrounds who quickly transformed into an incredible community in just five days and I want to share some insights into the program's dynamic facilitation that made it all possible. This program already holds a special place in my heart, in part because it's guided by the wisdom of one of the field's pioneers, Professor Marty Seligman. Witnessing him embrace lifelong learning and flexibility at the age of 80 was powerful. He sets an incredible example of finding meaning and purpose in aging and I found it invigorating - I hope the same for my future. So, what have I learned so far? I had the pleasure of speaking with one of my brilliant classmates, Ilene Schaffer, to dig into our community toolkits. We explore essential themes such as trust, vulnerability, humility, and the profound impact of recognizing each other's unique strengths. Our conversation also touches upon positive communication, collaboration's triumph over competition, and the enduring value of lifelong learning. Key Takeaways: Trust and Psychological Safety: Establishing an intimate, safe environment through communication from day one can foster vulnerability and authentic connections in the long run. Leadership and Humility: Discover the importance of leaders modeling humility and willingness to learn from others, even in positions of authority. Strength-Based Approach: How to recognize the individual capabilities of each person in order to understand how they complement one another, and you. Collaboration Triumphs: Understand why fostering teamwork over competition is the key to collective success and a thriving community. Plus, Power of Positive Introductions: Hear tips for elevating this seemingly simple process to rapidly deepen connections within a group and build a strong sense of community. Devotion is an odd word these days when change and variety have become something many strive for. But even when we go from one experience and project to another, a deeper sense of satisfaction and fulfillment are often missing. The power of devotion is different. When devoted to a person, cause, vision or activity not only are we committed, but enjoy the love that devotion brings. In all kinds of circumstances devotion persists and accompanies us through the most difficult of times. That is because we are focused upon something beyond our own immediate satisfaction and please. We have offered ourselves in an unconditional way that can be depended upon. And as we do, failure is impossible. The devotion itself brings a sense of completion and wholeness, no matter how things work out. It's wonderful to explore where you are devoted in your life, to whom or to what?

Our beliefs create our reality, basically. So, for example, if we're running on the belief that we're not good enough, or we're not intelligent enough, or you know, if it's a business owner or an entrepreneur, that there's too much competition, whatever the belief is, if it's a negative belief, it's going to impact your life, your business, your personal life or your business growth and development." The End of the Day Podcast with Kari Watterson: Using Mindset Work to Live Your Best Life
This week's episode is for anyone who has areas of their lives they feel helpless and powerless to change. In this episode, I talk about learned helplessness and how it may be showing up in your life and impacting your ability to move forward in areas you'd really like to change.Perhaps it's in the area of health and fitness, money, career, relationships, or even in your ability to overcome your own mind so you feel free to live a life of your own design.Learned helplessness refers to feeling powerless to help yourself now and in the future, due to the experience of being powerless in the past. When we feel powerless about the future, our motivation to keep looking for ways to help ourselves is dramatically reduced. Why would we want to keep trying and putting forth effort when we subconsciously believe that nothing we do will change the outcome or get us the desired result? This is where bringing awareness to learned helplessness and how it relates to motivation to change can be incredibly insightful. We can bring this understanding to our own lives and see where we might be holding ourselves back so that we can leverage this knowledge and start to gain some authority over it. What are you believing about your ability to influence your future?Walk through an exercise to see how asking yourself specific questions about your beliefs can shift you out of the frozen, powerless state and help you gain a sense of control over the direction of your life.------Cited in this episode:Slides | Motivation for Change: Overcoming Helplessness by the Yale School of Medicine (on Addiction)Martin Seligman, Ph.D. (considered the founder/pioneer of the science of Positive Psychology; author of numerous books on learned helplessness and its opposite, learned optimism (or learned hopefulness about the future); TED Talk speaker: The New Era of Positive Psychology (2004)------Original intro/outro music by JMW------1:1 mindset coaching isn't just for athletes or select special people. It's for anyone who wants to ask more of themselves but knows their thinking is getting in the way.Uncover what's holding you back. Learn tools and concepts to challenge your thinking and regulate your emotions so you can set goals you want and be able to do the belief work to meet them, rather than playing small and living at the effect of your unchallenged beliefs in your unmanaged mind. It's not about following the crowd. It's giving yourself permission to think outside the box to find inspiration and processes that resonate with your brain so you can finally feel what it's like to live a life that feels true and meaningful for you.If this is work you're excited to do, you'll want to sign up for my free offering (a 90-minute deep dive coaching call) so you can experience firsthand what it would be like to work together and learn how mindset coaching can uplevel your life.To book a call, email me at kari@kariwatterson.com with the subject line: "Book a 90-minute call."At the end of the day, we have one life. How do you want to live yours?Think about it.And then, let's get to work.------Interested in mindset work and the practice of mindfulness and using tools to help you manage your mind to live a happier, more peaceful, successful life? The world seems upside down today. The lines between sanity and madness are blurry and many feel anxious and confused. And, all the while harmony, clarity and even joy are right here with us. It is not difficult to step out of the world of madness, can be done, breath by breath. The path to sanity is right where we are every single moment, and we can walk on it in ease. There's no need to struggle for it, it is simply a matter of taking charge of our attention. What are we paying attention to, what are we believing, how are we handling the endless emotions that arise and seem to take us over. When we answer these basic questions, it is clear that nothing can take us over. Our life is always in our hands.

Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
There are books and books about how to raise babies, how to raise toddlers, how to raise teenagers and then, once it gets to them leaving the house and going out and being adults, there aren't a lot of resources about how to let go of your adult kids. Even when we are doing our work to let them go and live independent lives, we can get easily hooked back into old patterns of codependence and enabling when they hit a difficult patch. In Soul Recovery we are learning how to be present for them in new and healthy ways, allowing them to have the experience and the learning that comes from it and not getting hooked back into our beliefs that we need to save or do it for them. We are remembering our own wholeness as we keep the focus on ourselves, our own feelings and experience and releasing our patterns around control and codependency by using detachment and Soul Recovery. On episode 186, we welcome Krista Thomason to discuss the ways we tend to address our negative feelings, using techniques in positive psychology and stoicism to suppress them, psychotherapy's divergent stance in seeking to manage them instead, the shame we experience about feeling them, the myth of harmonizing and unifying our emotional and rational sides, why it's difficult and maybe even erroneous to distinguish the rational emotions from the irrational ones, the beliefs and worldviews underlying negative emotions and why perspective taking is a daunting remedy for them, whether feeling your negative feelings actually prevents them from getting worse, and what professional wrestling teaches us about our emotions. Krista K. Thomason is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Swarthmore College. She was the Philip L. Quinn Fellow at the National Humanities Center. Usually whatever happens we want to change it, fix it, do something about it. We want to control our experience, take charge and even dominate it. When we react in this manner, we are always looking for what's wrong. Our day becomes a battle between one problem and another. Rather than just "allowing" the day to appear as it does, for experiences to come and go, everything becomes a power struggle. We are desperate to make everything as "we like it" and to push away what we consider unpleasant. This approach to life, makes us tense, angry and often feeling like a failure. There is a radically simple and yet wonderful way to release this on going stress. Engage in the great act of "allowing".. Allow each person to be who they are, allow each moment to do what it does. Become a beholder and allow life to live. As we do this, things open up, come and go naturally. They reveal who they are and what they truly want of us. And in the process harmony and well rule the day.
