Zen Wisdom for Your Everyday Life

Not realizing who we truly are, we constantly struggle to prove our worth. One activity and relationship after another is used to feel good about ourselves, to attain a meaningful identity. And this identity that we work so hard to fulfill goes through endless success and failure. Up and down, back and forth. Ultimately as this go on, despair sets in. Many feel they can never be good enough. But where does this identity come from? Who created it? And have you stopped a moment, gotten off the merry go round and realized that you are already fully and simply who you are. What's wrong with that? Who you really are Cannot Fail.  Have you even made acquaintance with that person?  Why the constant compulsion to reject ourselves and become something more? Come listen and find out.

I wanted to interview Erin because she has such a powerful story of Soul Recovery.  A cancer diagnosis at 38 years old in 2019 offered her choice. Stay where she was in life that was easy and good or listen to her heart and follow her deepest desires and live her best life?  I have been inspired by her journey and how she has allowed Higher Power to lead her along the way to live her best life. As mentioned in the episode, her new path has lead her to become a Death and Dying Doula and Teacher.  The class I took with her called "Best Three Months" helped me to make big changes in my life in the spring of 2022 as well as think about and talk about death in new ways.  To learn more about Erin, her class schedules and other offerings - follow her on Instagram at Centered Purpose  or visit her website https://centeredpurpose.podia.com/  https://www.instagram.com/centeredpurpose/ Early detection of breast cancer has allowed Erin to be living her best life.  Erin sent me this information, and said she followed https://www.drnasha.com  Dr. Nasha Winters I worked with a Naturopathic Oncologist as well as my regular oncologist which I thought was a Godsend.  Some books I loved were The Cancer Fighting Kitchen (a cookbook) and Radical Remission...I feel like this book is really connected to soul work. It focuses on nine themes that the author has found to be connected with spontaneous cancer remission... Having had breast cancer, I would also just encourage people to do self exams and keep up with mammograms.Changing your dietTaking control of your healthFollowing your intuitionUsing herbs and supplementsReleasing suppressed emotionsIncreasing positive emotionsEmbracing social supportDeepening your spiritual connectionHaving strong reasons for livingFor more information about Rev. A well known saying in Zen is, "When they come, we welcome, when they go, we do not pursue." This beautiful teaching is in itself the heartbeat of our practice.  As we sit in zazen and do not move, we stop grabbing for what we want, or pushing away what is troubling. Instead we  see it all, embrace it, become the space in which everything arises and then departs. When there is no clinging to what is here at the moment, there is no pain when it goes its way. Instead we realize that something else always arises, stays awhile and leaves. This is the very nature of our lives itself, and when we can embrace it, see the beauty of it, experience the freshness and delight, the deep sense of loss and grief we live with departs as well.  And we are finally able to "Hold the Whole World In The Palm of Our Hand."

Impermanence teaches that everything changes and nothing lasts forever. We can either see this as a spiritual gift or we can be in discomfort and resistance- it is our choice.  There are seasons of change in nature and in our lives and both are important parts of the cycle of life.  Soul Recovery teaches us to be open to impermanence, and embrace the seasons of change in our own lives by turning the attention to ourselves and letting go of control. It is when we incorporate it all, when we can take healing and thriving to the next level!  You can find Emiliya at the www.theflourishingcenter.com and @theflourishingcenter on IG.

STEP ONE- HONESTY Using Hope for Today I am reading and reflecting on Step One.  This is a powerful step in recovery- " We take Al-Anon's First Step, admitting that we are powerless over the facts of our situation and the other people involved and that our lives had become unmanageable."  The start to our awareness that we can not control people and situations outside of ourselves and that our desire to do so has made us unhappy and dissatisfied with our lives.  There is an answer in Soul Recovery, by turning the attention to ourselves and taking real control of the only place we have it... in ourselves.      For more information about Rev. We live most of our lives in thoughts, images,  dreams and expectations. When something comes to an end, or when we feel lost and confused, the question comes, "Where is the next step?" There is always somewhere we are headed, a new turn in the road to take. When we consult our thoughts, seeking an answer, it's easy to go around and around. Focusing upon images, rather than their actual life, many feel lost and betrayed. The sun may be shining, the sky is clear blue, and yet many are living in a fog. Zen practice comes to turn all of this around. The answer to questions that haunt us are always simple. The next step is right under your feet. Take it. Nowhere to go. Wherever you are is perfect right now. Just be there fully. Be there without complaining,  with attention, and even gratitude. Then the next step becomes very clear. It's right under your feet once again.

If you have served in the military, you have experienced the dreaded hurry-up and wait way of performing and getting shit done. It can definitely be frustrating to even think about and imagine the problems that arise when you repurpose it in your personal and professional life post-military. With that said, what if we could take this intense way of executing and apply it in our everyday lives and use the waiting as an opportunity to receive invaluable feedback, resources, connections, or information that could help us live a more fulfilling and satisfactory life? In this episode, Chris shares a simple framework that can be repurposed in any area of life you may feel like "the hurry up and wait" landmine may be stopping you from living a life you love post-military.  Here is the framework to use in any situation you feel like you are hurrying up and waiting in:  What's the desired outcome  How can I enjoy the process of getting there? Or how can I make it fun?  What are ways I can ask the right questions from Google, the person in front of me, a group forum, in my network to see it from different perspectives?  How do I have everyone feel included and appreciated?  After execution- ask what feedback is there. Find a way to measure it.  Would you like to learn more about The Ambitious VET Network platform or ask us a clarifying question? His clinical research focused on health disparities, integrative therapies including dietary supplements amongst racial and ethnic minorities. He also completed course-work in Mind/Body Medicine, Positive Psychology, Lifestyle Medicine, Culinary Medicine, Botanical and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2018, Dr. Graham became one of less than twenty doctor/chef's worldwide, as he obtained his culinary degree from the Natural Gourmet Institute. Dr. Graham is a public health scientist, health service researcher, TED speaker, food activist and Chef. Dr. Graham believes medicine needs a FRESH start. Together with his wife, they founded FRESH Medicine and FRESH Med U. FRESH Medicine is an integrative health and wellness center located in NYC. FRESH is an acronym for the five ingredients in their recipe to health: Food, Relaxation, Exercise, Sleep and Happiness. Dr. Graham is the proud son of a farmer and an immigrant born and raised in Jackson Heights in Queens, NYC. A lifelong "food fighter" and a leader in the field of Integrative/Functional and Holistic Medicine he has prescribed “food as medicine” for over 15 years, has taught over 1000 healthcare workers, mostly doctors, how to cook whole food, plant-based meals, and created the first edible rooftop garden on a hospital in NYC. He served as Medical Director of Internal Medicine Primary Care Center, Program Director of Internal Medicine, Director of Integrative Therapies, Head of Employee Wellness for a large healthcare system in New York and provided strategic oversight, direction and leadership across all activities related to the health and wellness, health promotion and disease prevention. When not seeing patients, Dr. Graham trades his white lab coat for chef's whites with the goal of expanding his toolkit both for use as a healthcare provider and as an advocate for a new model of integrative, “food-first” lifestyle-focused healthcare called Culinary Medicine. Dr. Graham serves as the first Chief Health Officer of a food company called Performance Kitchen where he not only advises but also designs medically tailored meals for patients with chronic diseases. This allows doctors to prescribe meals, or “food as medicine” which are covered by Advantage Medicare Plans and hopefully Medicare under Bill H.R.5370 - Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act. In 2019, he and Julie launched an online self-care "university," called FRESH MED U. FRESH MED U allows people and companies to learn remotely, on their own time, using their intrinsic motivation to achieve their FRESH goals and live healthier and happier lives. They currently consult with multiple Fortune 2000 companies as corporate employee wellness vendors. Lastly, in the fall of 2021, Dr. Graham was asked to be part of NYC Mayor Eric Adams Food Transition team, focusing on institutional foods, a true honor for a native New Yorker.  On this episode, Dr. Graham shares his one way ticket to ancient Greece in the 5th century BCE during the time of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. In the course of our conversation, Dr. Graham shares some of Hippocrates' teaching including "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." Dr. Graham also shares his work on FRESH, with NYC Mayor Eric L. Adams, the Aman Hotels, and more. Dr. Robert Graham is just one of the exceptional individuals featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guest where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! In the old school of forgiveness one person says they are sorry and the other person forgives them - just to get on with it.  This old way of forgiveness can mean that we are actually pushing down our feelings and allowing a resentment or pain to continue to fester in our emotional system.  In Soul Recovery we are taking care of ourselves and clearing out our emotional system and truly letting go of those old pains that can be making us physically or spiritually sick.  Forgiveness from a Soul Recovery perspective is about looking at the old feelings and memories with compassion and allowance and letting go of the guilt and resentment so we can take our power back and be at peace.
