This episode is a complete refresh on the topic of leadership. Antonio Garrido, former architect and author of My Daily Leadership: A Powerful Roadmap for Leadership Success, has dedicated the latter half of his career to helping CEO's better tap into their emotional intelligence, understand the art of truth telling and create more productive working relationships. His energy and experience offers a reinvigorated perspective on modern day business, as he philosophises with Mark over the reality of business ownership and management in 2023, he gives some uncomfortable examples of the type of personalities still allowed to operate at top levels, and why those businesses open themselves up to failure. If you're from England, you probably think of Adnams for its 150-year-old brewery. What you might not know is that for just over a decade, they've also been distilling. In fact, they were the first distillery in the UK to have a brewery and distillery on the same site (they had to check with the government!) Adnams not only has a unique distillate for their single malt, they're also putting out one of the few ryes on the English Isles. Using rye from the Adnams family farm a mile away, they're creating a new flavor profile that is not an American rye from England nor an English rye trying to be American, or Continental for that matter.  It's delicious - as is the single malt and triple malt - and deserves your attention.  _________________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: Ad-free listening is now available to $5/month patrons and above! Sign up or raise your pledge at the link below.  The first three WRP barrel picks are in! The Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof Ryes are SOLD OUT, and the Barrell Rye Finished in Armagnac Casks is now live! Patreon members get an exclusive discount for the Jack Daniel's barrels and free shipping for the Barrell pick - now's the time to up that subscription or join the Patreon if you haven't already! Our Spirits of French Lick barrel pick is done! I won't spoil the surprise, only saying it is one of only 9 or 10 barrels ever made of this whiskey (and ours will be the first to come out!) $25 members get the chance to join me on picks: one of your fellow Patreon members joined me in Lynchburg, one was on the Spirits of French Lick team, and I'll be picking one or more for the KO pick once samples come in! There are now two more spots open in the Barrel Club and 10 spots open at the $15 level for those who want to experience more of the whiskies I get to try every month (or every other month).  Join the Patreon now for early access to the barrels! If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Only 2 Spots Remain in the Barrel Club. The $5 tier has access to the Patreon-only segment called “Under the Influencer”, where some of your favorite YouTubers/Instagrammers/Podcasters and more join me to talk whiskey, life, and influencing. This tier will also have priority access to upcoming barrel picks and shortly will have access to ad-free episodes.  The $15 tier takes second access to the $25 tier with 10 spots divided into two: 5 for people who want to receive samples every other month, and 5 for people who want to receive them every month but in smaller numbers.  The $25 tier - for people who really want to propel the pod and website forward - will have the same benefits as the $5 tier plus right of first refusal to join me on future barrel picks, access to bottles I'm sent to taste and review, and more. Only 2 spots remain!  You can still support for as little as $1 a month if you'd like to stay up to date with these changes and news about what we've got coming up.  Finally, please do like and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening - it really helps the Whiskey Ring Podcast move up the rankings.  If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on the website.  Adnams Distillery Adnams Distillery Website Adnams Distillery Instagram Adnams Distillery Facebook Adnams Distillery Twitter Adnams Distillery YouTube Thanks to our Lead Sponsor, Black Button Distillery  Black Button Distilling Website Black Button Distilling on Facebook Black Button Distilling on Instagram Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, ImpEx Beverages https://impexbev.com ImpEx on Instagram ImpEx on Facebook ImpEx on Twitter

The point being none of us really ever make it on our own. We're all reliant on so many factors around us that help guide, support and ultimately achieve our success. They challenge the listener to think about whether they lean into their technical capabilities, as it's easy to hide behind expertise, but to think about how many ‘soft-skills' they could honestly claim to be expert in. In the words of the great Jon Bon Jovi; "Woah! We're half way there." Yep, since the last episode I've passed the mid-point of this year off drinking. The biggest lesson I've learnt from my sober six months is that the habit of beer drinking can easily be separated from alcohol. As Fergus from Adnams told us, the beer in an alcohol-free product is THE SAME BEER that's in the regular product. There are some additive differences, but in terms of taste... it's come from the same source. This is huge. We've talked about pubs quite a lot, and we both love their atmosphere, the friendship, meeting-place, as our Irish friends would call it; the craic. Being able to keep this in my life, but massively reducing the alcohol intake is key to the 2021+ version of me. I know this is hard for some people to comprehend, but I can completely see a future where people meet in pubs to drink AF lager as a group... just think about the recent shift from cigarettes to vape - yes, it took legislative change and a MASSIVE advertising push, but the tobacco lobby seem to have realised that they'd rather have their customer-base vaping than giving up... well perhaps booze is the next frontier? The big challenge? Convincing people that AF beers are good drinks. Enter Adam from Sober Sauce... he's set-up a company that looks to provide mixed taster boxes of AF beer to those thinking of joining 'my' team. In this episode Adam explains that he's targeting Matt as much as he's targeting me. And if I heard correctly... he might just have convinced Matt that there's a non-alcoholic future for him too! Enjoy the episode... and as a bonus you can find on our website a video of an interview I recorded with Adrian Chiles at the weekend as part of Club Soda's HUGE festival of mindful drinking. Over four days speakers from around the globe shared their experiences, tips, and products to like-minded drinkers, and those looking to be a bit more moderate. It was great fun, and I'm hoping to get Adrian on our podcast soon... Cheers. Geoff See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Coronavirus has hit the amount of money migrant workers can send their families back home. Caroline Theoharides is an assistant professor of economics at Amherst College and explains how significant so-called remittances are for the 800 million people globally who rely on them. We meet one Indian IT consultant sending money from the UK, and hear from his family how those funds have helped pay for education and housing back in India. And Dora Zambria, chief operating officer of digital remittances company Azimo, tells us how his firm is working to bring the cost of sending money down significantly from a typical rate of around 7%. Also in the programme, the European Commission has launched an investigation into claims the US technology giant Apple has breached competition law. The BBC's Theo Leggett brings us the details. Plus, as many hospitality firms in the UK argue that their business models are unviable with a two metre minimum social distance between customers, we explore the trade-off between health and the economy, with Dr Andy Wood, chief executive of Adnams pubs and breweries.

We will also chat with Adnams about their hop collective and find out about the threat to the 'male hops' back in the 70s in our What's Brewing archive dive. This week Sue's recipe is a pear & blueberry flummery with imperial cyder - available here: https://wb.camra.org.uk/2020/06/08/beer-recipe-pear-and-blueberry-flummery-with-imperial-cyder/ and below! You can discover more by joining the campaign for just £26.50/year - visit https://join.camra.org.uk/BEER RECIPE: PEAR AND BLUEBERRY FLUMMERY WITH IMPERIAL CYDERFLUMMERY. What a luscious, lip-smacking word, it just rolls around the tongue. And it is a word with more than one meaning. In the past week it’s rather described what we’ve been getting from our politicians on various topics. “I was driving 200 miles up to Barnard Castle to see if the old jalopy could hit 110mph on the M6, officer.” Flummery. A dictionary definition tells us the word flummery indicates “meaningless flattery” – there’s a bit of that about as well. But my favourite definition is flummery as a dessert dating back to the 17th century – and even there we find duality; the Scots make Highland flummery involving oats, honey, cream and a wee dram, the English style is more of a creamy jelly set in a mould. I’ve taken a bit of both – porridge base and fruity whipped cream topping to create a cool, decadent dessert exactly right for the heatwave. My wee dram is Aspall’s Imperial Cyder from Suffolk made from “a single year’s harvest of bittersweet apples,” and that is precisely the taste in every sip. Dark gold with a lively champagne sparkle it is temptingly moreish; but be warned, the 8.2% ABV is not to be trifled with. The makers describe it as full-bodied with a decadent candied fruit aroma and recommends pairing with rich desserts. So here goes…Pear and blueberry flummery with Imperial Cyder (serves two)75g oats; bottle of medium dry cider; 1 large dessert pear; 100g blueberries; 280ml double cream.Soak oats overnight in around 100ml medium dry cider. Next day drain oats and discard soaking liquor. Peel and core pear and quarter lengthways; place in a smallish pan with the blueberries, add cider to cover, bring to a gentle bubble and simmer very briefly, a couple of minutes, until the pear is just softened (it turns a lovely blush pink from the blueberries). Drain the fruit, reserving the cooking syrup, and leave to cool. Whip cream to form fairly stiff peaks. You now build your dessert in layers. Take 2 stemmed glasses and divide oat mix between them. Spoon in a layer of cream, cut each pair quarter into four and arrange on top of the cream reserving 6 pieces to decorate the top. Then another layer of cream followed by the blueberries and a final layer of cream. Trickle in a little of the pink cider syrup so it filters down through the glasses. Top each with three pieces of pear. Chill for 2-3 hours and serve with a glass of sparkling cider. Cheers – and bon appétit.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/pubspintspeople.  There have been a couple of recurring themes in our Behind the Billboard series to date: our guests always seem to reference Dave Dye and cite The Economist work as their favourite. So we thought we’d bring the great man and great campaign together in EP10 for an Economist special, where we’ve delved deep into what goes behind possibly the most famous billboard campaign of all time.Follow along with the visual here: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/2020/03/18/dave-dye One of Dave’s recent favourites in the billboard world creatively has been Oatly - “it stands out, it’s funny, and it’s done it’s job of teaching us about Oatly”. Also Spotify from Who Wot Why. Of course. Dave thinks the good Outdoor really stands out, mainly because there’s so much average [and below] work out there. We’re not in a golden age of Outdoor, but there is a nice semi renaissance of good applications of Outdoor. His first billboard was for Appletiser… 5 points for anyone who can find a pic of it online! Given this is the Economist special…. We moved quickly onto the enormous body of work, the account and the history of the famous billboards. He talked about the pressure he felt taking on the client given the rich history of award winning work… but the need to help it evolve and to get his stamp on the work to ‘push it on a bit’. One of the first things Dave implemented was opening the creative process to the teams… no more creative direction behind closed doors. Dave brought in ‘the wall’ - where work would go up… and teams could come in and see where the work was and help push it on. Briefs from the Economist came in each quarter… but to Dave the briefs seamed quite similar: Read it, get more intelligent. The responses to brief were open to the entire agency. Top to bottom. When Dave came in there was around 4 campaigns a year and it had been running for 10 years. Fag packet maths said there would have been over 8000 concepts seen, with 320 sold over the 10 years. Creatively Dave felt it needed a kick. One of the first posters we talked about was the Venn diagram, the first campaign since taking over the Economist responsibility. Inspired by a Vanity Fair piece that featured a Venn diagram, and Dave thought it looked like an Economist ad. The plan was to do 8 in this style for the campaign. Dave likened the writing of the ads to some sort of Mensa test. Unfortunately the CEO Andrew Robertson [and as it turns out ‘King of the Pun’] came in at the 11th hour and said it couldn’t run for all 8 elements of the campaign. Mainly out of respect for AMV founder David Abbott, and the fact that his ‘Red Campaign’ was his ‘parting gift to the agency’. We moved on to the Too Many words example. A bottom drawer idea that was held back and got in eventually following some extra direction… and won a Gold at Campaign the following year. We also talked about the Jigsaw creative. For weeks Dave walked around the teams trying to find out who’s mockup had landed on his desk. Dave had done some development on the concept and worked it up into the full idea…. But he couldn’t locate the initial scamp artist. Eventually Dave Abbott scuttled in and saw it worked up… ‘Oh you liked it then’. Something we’ve spoken about before on the show is a piece of work for reception showing the ‘Funnel’ of work through from ideation to delivery on the Economist. We wrapped up on the Economist with some of the work post Dave and we talked about how it’s changed over the years. Thanks so much Dave for your fascinating insight into the work. And for Dave Dye fans out there wanting to hear more about his other Billboard work - Adidas, Adnams and Merrydown among others - we will be doing a Dave Dye part 2 later in the year. So we’re running a competition for you listeners out there to guess what you think Dave’s top Billboard campaign of all time is. Comment on our social and the winner will win a signed copy of Mark Danton’s book. [Hugh’s copy - he’s gonna buy another one].    ———————— #behindthebillboard #outdoor #ooh #posters #billboards #theeconomist #amvbbdo

Every year, between March and April, there used to be a cash Isa season. Banks and building societies clambered over each other in the race to top the best buy tables. This hasn't been the case for a while. However, Nationwide - with a new savings lottery - and Coventry - with a new deal - have offered signs of some green shoots this year, but is it even worth having a tax-free savings account anymore? On this week's podcast, Simon Lambert, Lee Boyce and Georgie Frost go to Isa-town, to talk cash savings deals, the best services to invest, and how to overcome the fear that coronavirus-induced stock market falls have delivered.   Elsewhere, the coronavirus also hit the Geneva Motor Show, but the motor industry decided many of the launches could take place online instead.  What cars were unveiled? Well it broadly fell into two camps, very expensive limited edition hypercars and electric cars that might be the future for the mass market. Simon and Lee talk through the best of them. Meanwhile, a reader takes the taxman to court over a child benefit penalty and finally Lee cracks open a low-alcohol beer at Adnams brewery, in Suffolk, and asks: has the taste become better... and why?

EP-154 John Keeling of Fuller Smith & Turner

Good Beer Hunting

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2018 59:17

Fuller Smith & Turner—or Fuller’s as it’s more commonly known—is the oldest surviving brewery in London, as well as being one of its largest. Fuller’s has been brewing at The Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, West London, for more than 160 years. The face of the British brewing industry has undergone tremendous change many times over during the course of its existence. Now, in 2018, the brewery faces fresh challenges. For instance, finding relevance in a market that constantly craves the rare and the new, while still championing traditional styles in an age of Hazy IPAs and Pastry Stouts. Surprisingly, this hasn’t phased Fuller’s one bit. Along with some of the UK’s other historical breweries, such as Adnams in Suffolk and Harvey’s in Sussex, Fuller’s is ensuring that styles such as Porter and ESB remain as relevant to the beer market as ever. Behind it all is the ebullient Brewing Director, John Keeling, who has been employed by Fuller’s for 37 years. Keeling has worked in the brewing industry since the 1970s, initially for the now-defunct Watney’s, then studying brewing science at Heriot Watt University before finally settling at Fuller’s. He became Head Brewer in 1999, a role he passed on to Fuller’s current Head Brewer Georgina Young in January 2017. Over this time he’s witnessed Fuller’s shift from being a completely manually operated brewery, to one that is almost entirely automated and state of the art. Keeling has been instrumental in ensuring that Fuller’s legacy be preserved. Be it by reviving historical recipes from the archives, by collaborating with the UK’s latest crop of brewers such as Fourpure and Cloudwater, or by constantly championing the simple pleasures found within a pint of Fuller’s flagship beer, London Pride. In October 2018 Keeling will retire, leaving an illustrious brewing career behind him. The industry won’t be getting rid of him that easily, however, as he’s just been voted chairman of The London Brewers Alliance, a guild that supports the collective interests of London’s independent breweries.   Over the next hour we discuss—or perhaps I should say John discusses—subjects ranging from the history of Fuller’s, to the importance of cask ale, to the price of beer, all the way up to his favorite subject: the philosophy of brewing.
