Unless you've landed on Earth from another planet in the last 24 hours, you probably know that in recent years, vinyl records have experienced a huge revival in popularity, which has led to a rebirth of record stores. It's fair to say that Graham Jones, our guest on this month's Misadventures in Music podcast, has documented this "vinyl revival" better than anyone. His book, Last Shop Standing: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop, was a best-seller in 2009 and became an acclaimed documentary. Graham's probably visited more record shops in the UK than anyone else as his most recent book 'The Vinyl Revival and the Shops That Made It Happen' (also a TV documentary) testifies. He's a compelling storyteller with some genuinely hilarious (and eyebrow-raising) tales of his life in the record industry over the last 40 years. He has some fascinating 'behind-the-scenes' stories that he's never revealed until we came along .Enjoy the ride."

Monday Night Live Derek Arden: Interview with Graham Jones about AI in education and business

Welcome to Monday Night Live! Welcome to another insightful episode of Monday Night Live with Derek Arden! This week, Derek is joined by Graham Jones, Head of Business Studies at the University of Buckingham, for an engaging and forward-looking conversation on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping both the educational and business landscapes. With AI evolving at a rapid pace, its influence on universities, businesses, and industries worldwide is undeniable. Graham offers his expert take on how institutions must adapt to AI advancements or face potentially dire consequences. The Future of Higher Education – AI Takes Center Stage In a candid discussion, Graham highlights the financial challenges currently facing UK universities, with several on the brink of bankruptcy due to outdated practices and declining student enrollment. He points out how traditional lecture theaters and teaching methods are becoming obsolete as AI takes on more advanced roles in education. Graham predicts that universities will need to pivot toward AI-accredited qualifications to remain relevant, fundamentally changing the higher education system. Through the historical lens of academia, he discusses how the role of professors and the concept of lecture theaters have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Graham argues that AI's capability to enhance and even replace many traditional educational functions—like creating new content and conducting assessments—will modernize the system and force universities to rethink their approach. AI's Role in Business Efficiency – A Radical Shift Ahead The conversation then moves to the transformative power of AI in business operations. According to Graham, AI's ability to handle both administrative and creative tasks will dramatically reduce the number of employees businesses need. The prediction? Companies that previously required a workforce of 100 people may soon only need 5, thanks to AI's efficiency in automating tasks, managing websites, and making real-time adjustments based on data. Practical examples of AI's growing presence in business were shared, such as its ability to generate content, design websites, and create infographics in seconds—streamlining processes and saving both time and money. AI: Ethical Concerns and Security Issues While AI brings about promising developments, Graham also emphasizes the ethical and security concerns surrounding its use. He shares examples of cyber fraud, misuse of AI in criminal activities like human trafficking, and the recent criticism aimed at Starling Bank for not keeping up with AI-driven security measures. He stresses the need for robust legislation to regulate AI and protect against potential abuses, pointing out that it's not AI we should fear but how it may be misused by bad actors. Practical Applications of AI in Content Creation Graham gives a hands-on demonstration of how AI can be used to create content, showing how it can transform raw text into visually appealing infographics. As he walks the audience through the process of turning Derek's body language notes into professional-looking infographics, he highlights the speed, accuracy, and efficiency with which AI can produce valuable materials for businesses and educators alike. This episode underscores the importance of businesses staying competitive by adopting AI, while also being mindful of its ethical implications. The discussion wraps up with a look at the exciting future of AI and its inevitable impact on job markets, urging industries to adapt or risk falling behind. Conclusion: AI – Revolutionizing Education and Business As the episode concludes, Graham and Derek both agree that AI is no longer just a technological tool but a force that will shape the future of industries worldwide. Universities must modernize to survive, and businesses must embrace AI to remain efficient and competitive. However,

Red Enlightenment argues not only for a deepened understanding of religious matters, but calls for the secular left to develop its own spiritual perspectives. It proposes a materialist spirituality built from socialist and scientific sources, finding points of contact with the global history of philosophy and religion. In the interview we recontextualize the common trope of socialists being anti-religion, how the tech world often overlaps with spiritual communities, and the need for an answer to people's spiritual needs. If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of November 27 and December 4, 2023. MUSIC – 8 sec – Instrumental. That's part of “Backburner,” by The Faux Paws.  It opens Virginia Water Radio's annual episode on winter-weather preparedness.  Have a listen for about 30 seconds to some of the song's lyrics to set the stage for talking about cold times. MUSIC – ~32 sec – Lyrics: “I put my heart in the freezer, I put my love on ice,  I tell myself I don't need her, wouldn't that be nice?  I put my heart in the freezer, I put my love on hold, I tell myself I don't need her, and then I wonder why I feel so cold.  I wonder why I feel, I wonder why I feel, I wonder why I feel so cold.” All Virginia residents, whether or not they've tried to put their heart in the freezer, will soon have no wonder about why they feel so cold: winter astronomically begins in Virginia on December 21 at 10:27 p.m.  That's the Eastern Standard time of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, when that hemisphere is at its maximum tilt away from the sun.  From well before the December solstice, all the way through the season's conclusion in March, winter can bring cold temperatures, hazardous roads, power outages, fire hazards, and other concerns.  To help you be prepared, here are 10 tips compiled from information provided by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1. Avoid traveling in winter-storm conditions if you can.  If you must travel, get road-condition information from the Virginia 511 telephone system, mobile app, or Web site, and carry in your vehicle an emergency kit, including jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, food and water, and other items. 2. Have battery-powered sources of lighting and information, along with enough batteries to last through a power outage of several days. 3.  Develop and practice a family emergency plan that covers sheltering; escape from a home fire; emergency meeting places; communications; a supply of food, water, and medications; and other factors specific to your circumstances. 4.  Get fireplaces, wood stoves, and chimneys inspected and cleaned. 5.  Install a smoke detector in every bedroom and on every floor level; test them monthly and replace the batteries at least annually.  6.  Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home and check or replace the battery every six months. 7.  If you use electric space heaters, make sure they'll switch off automatically if the heater falls over; plug them into wall outlets, not extension cords; keep them at least three feet from combustible objects; don't leave heaters unattended; and check for cracked or damaged wires or plugs. 8.  Generators, camp stoves, and other devices that burn gasoline, charcoal, or other fuels should be used outdoors only. 9.  Learn where to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts. And 10.  Be careful of overexertion during snow shoveling. More information on preparing for winter weather, fires, and other emergencies is available online from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, at vaemergency.gov. Next time the forecast calls for snow, freezing rain, or other wintry weather, here's hoping that you can stay warm, dry, and safe. Thanks to Andrew VanNorstrand for permission to use this episode's music, and we close with about 20 more seconds of “Backburner.” MUSIC - ~20 sec – Instrumental. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS The following information is quoted from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, “Winter Weather,” online at https://www.vaemergency.gov/threats/winter-weather, as of 11-6-23. “Winter storms can range from freezing rain or ice to a few hours of moderate snowfall, to a blizzard that lasts for several days.  Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures, power outages, and unpredictable road conditions. Before, during, and after a winter storm, roads and walkways may become extremely dangerous or impassable.  Access to critical community services such as public transportation, child care, healthcare providers and schools may be limited.  Preparing your home, car, and family before cold weather and a winter storm arrives is critical. *During a winter storm, stay off the roads as much as possible and only drive when absolutely necessary.  Always give snow plows the right of way.*Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning device inside your home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or any other partially enclosed area.*Snow shoveling is a known trigger for heart attacks!  Always avoid overexertion when shoveling.*When severe weather occurs, plan to check on elderly or disabled neighbors and relatives.*If you must travel, know the road conditions before you leave home.  Visit 511Virginia.org or call 511 for road condition updates.*Protect yourself from frostbite!  Hands, feet, and face are the most commonly affected areas so wear a hat, and mittens (which are warmer than gloves) and cover your mouth with a scarf to reduce heat loss.*Keep dry!  Change out of wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat.*Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer or heavy clothing. Winter Storm Watch – Be Aware Severe weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible in the next day or two. Winter Storm Warning – Take Action Severe winter conditions have either begun or will begin soon in your area. Prepare Your Home *Make sure your home is properly insulated.*Check the weather stripping around your windows and doors.*Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.*Have additional heat sources  on hand in case of a power outage.*Keep a fire extinguisher accessible.*Replace the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector annually. If you are an avid reader or "student" of success, then you have probably come across the HBR Books.  I've gone through many of them over the years and they publish a bunch of books called "The HBR 10 must reads".  They are 10 must read articles on topics like Leadership, Communication, Innovation, Strategic Marketing, Sales, Teams, etc....   One of my favorites is HBR 10 must reads on Mental Toughness.   I am so focused on mental toughness in my own life and totally impressed by the topics in this book that I am going to drill down into the next 10 days with you exclusively on Mental Toughness.   Mental Toughness is something you absolutely MUST develop if you are going to be a leader or develop any type of success in your life.  If you want to learn how to overcome setbacks...coming back even stronger.  Or, if you just want to be a better leader, parent, partner, or success in life...you need to work on your mental toughness.   This particular HBR series is packed with lessons, tips, strategies on Mental Toughness and really has 10 topics that I think you will relate to and be able to apply in every area of your life.  So join me over the next 10 days and lets really dig deep into mental toughness.   Today the topic is an article called How the Best of the Best Get Better and Better...from Graham Jones.   Graham Jones is a best selling author and a top performance consultant for businesses, athletes and the military for over 20 years.  He wrote a book call Thrive on Pressure which is a great lesson for us to start with.   Ultimately this topic boils down to this...Elite performers learn to Thrive on Pressure.  I want to focus and point out to you 6 specific characteristics of Peak Performers that Graham says are keys to Thriving on Pressure.  If you can learn to adopt these traits you can see a massive increase in your mental toughness and results.   Love the Pressure learn to remain cool under pressure love the pressure and use it to drive performance managing pressure is easier if you focus on your own excellence become a master of compartmentalization inner-focused and self-directed (no need to impress) add a secondary passion to help you switch (on/off) endeavors   Fixate on the Long Term ability to rebound is in direct proportion to LT goals focus but pave the road with small mins and achievements meticulously plan short-term goals ultimately, create clarity and vision of future but be specific   Use the Competition simple Principle- train with people that will push you the hardest pushing yourself is good, but competitions levels you up find ways to surround yourself with elite performers masterminds, Programs, Environments, etc. many examples of people pushing each other in sports, life.   Reinvent Yourself if you are a high achiever you need to learn to reinvent yourself the is to create a desire for feedback. particularly important to get in the moment feedback. become hungry for advice, training, lessons, and learning...to learn and grow Note: make sure your feedback is constructive and productive.   Celebrate the Victories elite performers know how to party and celebrate the wins. work hard. play hard. celebrate hard. its more than an emotional release...it brings analysis and awareness. also, don't get stuck celebrating...move on once you celebrate. and make sure you are celebrating victories.   The Will to Win all elite performers have a fierce desire to compete and win. foster the inner desire and persistance you need. its not always about the 1st place win...its about competing. it takes grit and courage to get in the ring, let alone back in the ring after defeat. But, if you want to be an Elite Performer you must continue to get in the ring.

Plans to build a new road bridge over the A249 as part of the Stockbury roundabout improvements have been scrapped - and replaced with a footbridge instead. People living in the village fear it'll be cut in half by the £92m project off junction 5 of the M2 and wanted a flyover for vehicles. Our reporter talks us through this story. Also in today's podcast, a picture of a drag queen performing at Canterbury Pride has been vandalised in what's feared could be a targeted attack. The mural on the window of the former Debenhams store was ripped down and torn up. We hear from Daniel Smith, who identifies as queer, about his experiences of the city, and the organiser of Kent's biggest Pride festival. And, thousands of children across Kent will be finding out today what secondary school they'll be going to in September. Parents were able to name up to four preferred choices. Graham Jones is an education specialist at Whitehead Monckton solicitors in Maidstone and shares advice if you didn't get your first choice.

We kick off season five of The Creative Boom Podcast with a topic that is, thankfully, getting louder in the creative industries. And that's mental health. We've invited Manchester-based graphic designer Graham Jones as our first guest to guide us through. Now, if you're one of those creatives who doesn't do any marketing or seek fame in this industry, then Graham's approach will appeal. He's stayed deliberately quiet, not seeking out interviews or press coverage. Instead, he's been focusing on navigating his way through a successful career spanning over two decades. And he's had the publicity without even trying, as his work speaks for itself. He's been published in dozens of respected books by Victionary and Counter-Print and celebrated in magazines such as Computer Arts and Grafik. Graham runs the independent design studio Loose Collective and is a part-time senior lecturer at the Manchester School of Art. If there's one thing he's especially famous for in the North West, it's for being one of the nicest people in the industry. Graham knows everyone and is well-loved. He's a positive force for good in the design community and someone who, we discover, has fought many battles to overcome his own mental struggles. In this episode, we chat about the obsession with fame and fortune in the design industry, why it's bad for mental health and why being famous shouldn't be the goal. Graham also gives us a reality check about the field overall – it's not glamorous, for the most part. It can be hard work, a real slog. You have to love the profession to do it. We also discuss overcoming imposter syndrome and the little mind tricks we can play to be happier creatives. And Graham gives us lots more reassuring advice to navigate what can sometimes feel like a demanding career.

Graham Jones and Ian Harries from The Podcast Nobody Asked For return to Flixwatcher to review Graham's choice His House. His House is a 2020 horror film written and directed by Remi Weeks and starring Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu and Matt Smith. Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) are refugees fleeing from war-torn South Sudan. After surviving the dangerous journey across the English Channel in an overcrowded boat they are granted asylum in England. They find themselves assigned a grotty house on a nondescript housing estate with a sympathetic but firm case worker (Matt Smith) keeping a close eye on them. As Bol and Rial struggle to fit in with their new environment they are visited by a “night-witch” or apeth that torments them at night. While His House was a hit for Flixwatcher and guests its tough subject made it hard to easily recommend. However, with a tight run time of 93 minutes and excellent performances from both Dirisu and Mosaku His House still scores a respectable 3.98 overall.   [supsystic-tables id=278] Episode #266 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #266 Crew of Ian Harries (@lordharries) and Graham Jones from The Podcast Nobody Asked For Find their Websites online at https://thepodcastnobodyasked4.captivate.fm/ And at https://twitter.com/nobodyasked4pod Please make sure you give them some love   More about His House For more info on His House, you can visit His House IMDb page here or His House Rotten Tomatoes page here. Midsommar is the 2019 second feature film from writer and director Ari Aster. Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor William Jackson Harper and Will Poulter as a group a friends invited to visit Sweden to experience an exclusive midsummer festival. After a family tragedy, the tensions in the relationship between Dani and her boyfriend Christian are out in the open. Despite her obvious fragile mental state she agrees to come along and it is not long before strange things start happening and the lines between reality and hallucinations become blurred. Midsommar is an extremely vivid and imaginative folk horror than manages to move between the disturbing and the amusing with ease. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Florence Pugh helps the two hour and 27 minute run time feel light. The Podcast Nobody Asked For has to date recommended Midsommar 146 times - therefore it was not a surprise that their scores for recommendabilty were the full five. Slightly lower scores for small screen - this is film best viewed with an audience on a big screen - gives an overall rating of 4.15.   [supsystic-tables id=273] Episode #261 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #261 Crew of Ian Harries (@lordharries) and Graham Jones from The Podcast Nobody Asked For Find their Websites online at https://thepodcastnobodyasked4.captivate.fm/ And at https://twitter.com/nobodyasked4pod Please make sure you give them some love   More about Midsommar For more info on Midsommar, you can visit Midsommar IMDb page here or Midsommar Rotten Tomatoes page here.
