*apologies for some intermittent mic feedback issues during the recording* Women's voices are strong. They are powerful. They are educated, inquisitive, inventive, and just as important as any other voice, yet in certain industries they are still muffled. The beer industry is one of those industries that, while great strides in equality have been made, women's voices are still not always received at the same level as their male counterparts. I had the absolute honor and privilege of speaking with a group of 5 brilliant women in the Cincinnati beer industry about why this is, and what we can do about it. Joining me on this panel are: Beth O'harra - NEW Ales Brittany Frey - MadTree Brewing Chloe Schaefer - Miller Coors Candace Winterbauer - Northwood Cider Co Anique Thomas - Esoteric Brewing If you are able, please donate to BeLoved Asheville to help them rebuild post Hurricane Helene: https://www.belovedasheville.com/ Thank you to everyone who attended in person, and to everyone who listens to this incredibly important recording. Thank you to Woodburn Brewing for opening your space for us. If you see Metsaema on tap at any of the March First locations, buy a pint! It was brewed and released for the Women In Beer panel and Cincy Beer Week, and is named after the Estonian forest mother and guardian. This dank, piney, hoppy IPA is just as strong as the women I spoke to at this panel. Cheers! This was recorded at Woodburn Brewing on October 7, 2024
What is diversity and inclusivity and why is it important to the beer industry?Earlier this year we invited Amelie Tassin, the founder and director of Tipple Marketing, a marketing and strategy agency based in Edinburgh, Scotland, to find out more. With over 15 years' experience, Amelie has worked across several European sectors from retail banking and property development to cosmetics and food and drink. Her agency's work is truly 'the Swiss Army knife of marketing' and offers tailored services for all needs thanks to Amelie's wealth of cross-industry experience. In 2018 she founded Women In Beer, a 'women who beer' group in Edinburgh, and in 2019 she started the successful Women In Beer Festival (WIB Fest), a celebration of women in the industry with an impressive roster of events including tap takeovers, talks, and tastings. In her talk, Amelie discusses diversity and inclusivity. She presents data about women and their relationship with beer, the wider industry and also outlines the work Women in Beer are doing to increase diversity and inclusivity in the industry.

A unique Women's Month collaboration of female representatives from the craft beverage industry, the Women's Beer and Spirits Collective, continues to grow and brew interest. This Midwest collaboration of females in the brewery industry expanded this year to include more breweries and, new this year, three spirits companies as well. Spanning the Midwest, with the concentration of support in the Milwaukee, WI-area, this collaboration's mission is to raise awareness of females in the male-dominated craft beer and spirits industry while raising funds for select nonprofit organizations.Derrick and Jonathan were joined by Julianna Pierandozzi with 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. (Sheboygan, WI) and Maggie Skinner with Revolution Brewing (Chicago, IL) to talk about all the Women's Month events and ways you can support this industry through March and beyond! With the goal of raising $10,000, the initiative is an ongoing supporter of Milwaukee-based Sojourner Family Peace Center (familypeacecenter.org), the largest nonprofit provider of domestic violence prevention and intervention services in Wisconsin. This year the female-led crew will also donate a portion of the funds raised to: Pink Boots Society - an international organization that aims to assist, inspire and encourage women and non-binary individuals in the fermented/alcoholic beverage industry to advance their careers through education. The organization was started by Teri Fahrendorf of Wisconsin - one of the first women to enter the craft brewing industry.Safe Harbor Sheboygan - provides services to reach out to those affected by sexual assault and domestic abuse; provide support to those in crisis; and to educate individuals, families and the community, with the tools needed to empower them to live lives free of domestic abuse and sexual assault.Sunshine Place of Sun Prairie - a nonprofit organization that cultivates community connections to spread rays of hope for individuals, families, and children in need. DAiS (Domestic Abuse Intervention Services) of Madison - works to make Dane County a safer, more just, more equitable place for people who have experienced domestic violence, their children, and the people who love them. Fundraising opportunities include:Attend and support at an onsite events (see schedule below)Several grocery and liquor stores will display participating breweries' products with a special Women's Month Display with QR Code for online donations. Point-of-purchase donation displays at various bars and restaurantsDonations can also be made online at www.familypeacecenter.org/donate. ABOUT WOMEN'S BEER AND SPIRITS COLLECTIVE:A collaboration led by female beverage industry representatives in timing with Women's Month in March to raise awareness for females in a male-dominated craft beer industry that in turn raises money for anyone affected by domestic violence. In 2022, the inaugural Women's Month collaboration effort of females in the brewery industry was led by five representatives supporting the 11 events that raised $2,119. The 2023 goal was set at $4,000 with breweries committed to match donations (up to $2,000). Last year's effort raised $8,000 through its 23 events and corresponding efforts.

(Wine Spectator)Carbonic maceration: A winemaking process that takes place during fermentation to produce fresh, fruit-forward, low-tannin red wines. Carbonic maceration uses whole clusters of grapes in a sealed, carbon dioxide-filled tank to start fermentation within each grape. The Sober Curious movement is gaining traction in this country which I am reminded of at the start of every year with all the Dry January posts. And if you need to reassess your relationship with alcohol, please, by all means. But on behalf of alcohol producers, I feel compelled to say a few words about how a neo-prohibition movement, no matter how small, must not negate the love, respect, and passion that cidermakers, winemakers, brewers, distillers, and fermenters in general have for the beverages they produce. These professionals have an avid dedication to the craft and they are very aware that it comes with great responsibility.References and Special Mentions:Inside the New Temperance Movement, This Naked Mind, Control Alcohol From Dry January to Fake Cocktails, Inside the New Temperance Movement, The Washington Post MagazineDry January ACA Temperance Movement Today in US: Neo-Prohibitionism, Alcohol Problems and SolutionsThank you to Tony Stuck for the awesome intro/outro music and to Mary Ann King for the amazing pod art that you see for every episode. A lot goes into that tap list that you see when you sit down at the bar. And for the women in this world, they deal with a lot of other crap as well. So I interrupt this buyer series to do a quick reflection on the women who I am talking to and why they are amazing... Even if they don't always feel amazing. And that's a wrap!
