Mark Norbury, Chief Executive of UnLtd, explores the dynamic world of social entrepreneurship, highlighting the organisation's commitment to empowering leaders who are transforming their communities. UnLtd has long championed social entrepreneurs across the UK, providing both financial and practical support to help innovative ideas flourish. Over the past five years, the organisation has seen a seismic shift in its approach and impact, driven by the challenges of the pandemic, economic inequalities, and rising demand for support in an increasingly volatile social landscape. A key focus of the episode is the Growth Impact Fund, UnLtd's pioneering social investment vehicle. Designed to foster equity and opportunity, the fund prioritises entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds, including Black, Asian, minority ethnic, and disabled communities. This initiative reflects UnLtd's recognition of the untapped entrepreneurial talent in these groups and its commitment to dismantling systemic barriers to access. Mark sheds light on the evolving definition of social entrepreneurship, emphasising its core: creating financially sustainable solutions that drive meaningful social change. From supporting grassroots innovators to scaling high-impact organisations, UnLtd's efforts encompass not only financial assistance but also wraparound support, including business mentorship, peer learning opportunities, and pro bono professional services. This holistic approach is vital for fostering sustainable growth and enabling social entrepreneurs to navigate complex challenges. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. Growing up in the ‘80s in New Jersey, Marc Ecko loved hip hop, graffiti art, and painting t-shirts for friends. His passion soon bloomed into a full-on business: ECKO UNLTD, a streetwear brand known for its iconic rhino logo. By the 1990's, the brand had become a cultural force, but not without its share of bad deals, daunting debt, and a close brush with bankruptcy. Eager to keep innovating, Marc launched COMPLEX, a media company hyper-focused on “convergence” culture: hip hop, fashion, sports and pop culture. Within a decade, COMPLEX had weathered the financial crisis, and emerged profitable. After being bought–and sold–by Buzzfeed, it was purchased by a video shopping company for over $100 million, and ECKO UNLTD just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Le Roy's IAB agenda: Setting standards, building investment confidence, creating communities (and directing a panto)Covering the shenanigans of the IAB's digital metrics tender nearly 15 years ago, it was impossible to predict that the industry body would grow into the big tent it has since become.Much of the credit for that goes to Gai Le Roy, the CEO since 2018. Le Roy rose through media research roles including as research and insights director for Nine, VP of research at Nielsen and GM of audience insights at Fairfax Media. In today's Unmade podcast, we explore how she has shifted the IAB to consensus building by spreading its wings across the whole digital ecosystem. That includes a series of ongoing working groups focused on specific topics such as gaming, digital out of home, sustainability, retail media, affiliate marketing, careers and search. And the IAB runs a series of member summits across Sydney and Melbourne including this month's Audio Summit, April's affiliate marketing and digital out of home events and September's annual MeasureUp metrics conference.During the conversation, Le Roy offers a little detail on the financial state of the organisation, which she describes as healthy, with a turnover of around $2m.She also reveals why she doesn't want to bring back the IAB Awards, how she ended up involved in the unlikely success story of last year's UnLtd industry pantomime and she attempts to answer the question of what happens in her career after the IAB.The conversation also covers off the key issues coming up for 2024, including the loss of signal through cookie deprecation, forthcoming privacy legislation and where video ratings go next.Editing was courtesy of Abe's Audio, the people to talk to about voiceovers, sound design and podcast production.Message us: letters@unmade.mediaTim BurrowesPublisher - Unmade This is a public episode. Link to my Book - https://www.voicesinmyhead.in/bookYameer Adhar, host of Voices In My Head gets inside the head of Captain. Rupinder Kaur - an ex army officer and now a naturopath. Capt. Rupinder Kaur grew in up in small town India, in places like Pithoragarh and Wellington, before Dr Manmohan Singh opened the country up to Coca Cola and Clinique shampoo. She is a product of the 1980s, but that's not the only thing that shaped her. Her parents, both in the army, also did. Her mother was a doctor and her father rose to be a general. She herself finished college in St Bede's, Simla, and then came to Delhi to do a post grad degree in psychology. She never finished it, and wonders what life would have been like if she had. Instead, she headed to Allahabad to sit for the SSB, where candidates applying to join the army as officers gradually get weeded out over the course of a week. The sixteenth batch of women officers, she won the gold medal for the best lady cadet, and went on to join the Army Ordnance Corps that to a layperson is all about weapons and ammunition. Rocket launchers interested her the most! Her first posting was in an ammunition depot near Ludhiana, where she was the security officer responsible for everything from rifles to Bofors shells. After six years, she left (in those days women didn't have permanent commission and she didn't see a future here), and joined the corporate world, working across companies like Google and Microsoft.Quickly she realised the corporate life was not for her, and she went to the UK to do a masters degree in Poverty Reduction. Her longest career stint has been in the social sector, with organizations like STiR, UnLtd, and J-Pal, a set up founded by Nobel laureates Abhijeet Banerjee and Ester Duflo. From early in life, so-called alternate systems of healing was something her father dabbled in, taking her to naturopathy centres as early as 1 and half years old!In her early 40s, she realised she needed to revisit naturopathy to develop a deeper connection with her own body. In fact connection is something she talks about frequently, whether with oneself, the community, or with Nature. --The discussion on this episode of the podcast is all about naturopathy and things that Rupinder has experienced as an ex army officer. Changes have been announced for the restrictions that will be eased for NSW the Monday after the state hits the milestone of 80% of the adult population fully vaccinated. New NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet revealed the changes with a number of restrictions around entertainment venues to be eased more than initially announced. Among them, there will be a 3000-capacity limit for controlled outdoor gatherings (ie. seated, ticketed events such as concerts). It had previously been announced that the capacity limit would be 500, so it's a fairly significant increase. In July Spanish scientists researching COVID-19 at an indoor concert with 5,000 people without physical distancing found that same-day rapid testing, the use of face masks and improved ventilation led to very low rates of transmission. Of the 4,584 attendees who were analysed, six cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the two weeks following the concert. Three of the cases were believed to have been caught after the event, while one person potentially attended the concert during their incubation period. The source of the other two cases couldn't be identified Nightclubs, meanwhile, will be permitted to open earlier than the previously-slated date of Wednesday, 1st December. There's one big catch, though – clubs will be able to open for seated drinking only. Dancing will not be allowed until that 1st December date. Artists and industry bigwigs are coming together to bring attention to youth crises in Australian communities for Musicians Making A Difference Day. On Friday, October 15, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, UK producer Joel Corry, and many artists are set to join forces with in order to lend their support to youth charity Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD). Today's guest on 'Connected Sounds' is Erin Rae - a Nashville indie folk singer-songwriter gifted with a unique ability to fuse musical genres and influences to craft songs that feel fresh and wholly her own. Both lyrically and sonically, she strikes a fiercely independent chord, proudly releasing a deeply personal record Putting On Airs that reflects her own upbringing in Tennessee, including the prejudices and injustices that she witnessed as a child that continue to impact her life to this day. According to Rae, "this album was born out of a need to do some healing work in my personal life, in order to address some fears and patterns of mine to allow my true feelings to come to the surface." In this episode, Erin discusses growing up in the southern United States, living with internalised homophobia, her aunt's experience of losing a child custody battle in Alabama in the 1990s due to being LGBT+ and the importance of acknowledging the small steps of progress towards LGBT+ rights in the South. In this episode, Ellie speaks with Santo Mollica of The East Village's own The Source Ultd. Print and Copy Shop, opened in 1979. Santo and the shop he owns with his wife Margaret are something of an ode to the Village in the 80s and 90s: before it was a copy shop, in fact, it was a performance space for local bands and artists, and Santo continues this legacy by producing tourbooks for the likes of Arcade Fire and Mumford and Sons. Santo is self taught in much of his trade, and is the first to say that failure is a necessity to success — something we all need to hear sometimes.
Welcome to episode #377 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Marc Ecko is one of the most fascinating people that I have ever met. I was asked to interview him live and onstage in Toronto earlier this year. I knew that he was the creative and fashion genius behind Eck? Unltd. (which has become a billion dollar fashion and lifestyle company). I also knew that his marketing antics have been well documented (remember the tagging of Air Force One?). I figured that I was going to meet an older gentleman in their late fifties (like a Tommy Hilfiger or Kenneth Cole type of persona). It turns out that Ecko and I are almost the exact same age (I need to start working harder!). Ecko is still semi-actively involved in the multiple fashion brands that he created (Eckored, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew and Zoo York), but spends the bulk of his current time working on Complex Media. As if that's not enough, he is one of the most generous philanthropists out there, and recently released a stunning business book called, Unlabel - Selling You Without Selling Out. He is, simply put, an amazing individual who is very real, practical and friendly. Enjoy our conversation...
