We all have a shadow self. The part of us we have repressed, hidden, or avoided; our character traits that society doesn’t consider as “good” or “positive.” This idea came from 20th century psychologist Carl Jung. When we ignore our shadow self and the emotions that come with it or if we try to suppress them, so we can show and feel the good sides only, we may feel incomplete. We lack understanding of how to love and accept ourselves fully. That will show up in our lives as insecurities, shyness, self sabotage, low energy and unhealthy relationships. Shadow work allows us to gain a better understanding of ourselves, so we can embrace every single part of us and thus will cause more energy, creativity, and improved relationships. In today’s episode, retired Art Therapist turned Tough-Love Shadow Slaying Biz Coach Lanie Smith and I discuss all things shadow self and shadow work: The four pillars of consciousness Is shadow work necessary? If you focus on shadow work, will you go into a deep dark hole? How she has helped her clients overcome their shadows How we can stop self-sabotaging ...and more. Today’s topic is one that I’m very passionate about, and I’m finding more and more clinicians who are making lifestyle changes and getting on board with self-care. Specifically, today’s show covers how we make self-care a regular and necessary part of our lifestyle. Lanie Smith is an integrative art therapist who is the perfect person with whom to have this discussion. It’s so easy for clinicians to think of self-care as an afterthought, especially during stressful times, but how do we go about integrating self-care into our lifestyle and not have it as just another item on the to-do list? Join us for more with Lanie! You can read the full show notes at: Session198

If you listened to episode 79 with Dr. Gabor Maté, you’ll be interested in this interview with Amy Sugeno, LCSW of Marble Falls, Texas, who is a clinical eco-therapist. Amy talks about what Eco Therapy is, the research on its use and effectiveness with depression and anxiety, stress relief, ADHD, grounding and self-regulation for trauma survivors. Amy explains that Eco Therapy can take many forms, including animal-assisted (for example, canine and equine) therapies, wilderness therapies, walk and talk therapy, horticulture therapy and clinical eco-therapy in an office, as well as many other possibilities. She explains that this is a depth-oriented type of psychotherapy which can be very powerful. Amy describes how she conducts an eco-therapy session what to wear and what a client can expect overall. She and Laura discuss the power dynamics of the therapy relationship and how Eco Therapy can help create a balance. For the past 10 years, Amy has worked to help people heal from trauma. True Calling Project | Finding Purpose and Meaning In Life and Career
Lanie Smith is the owner and founder of Integrative Art Therapy and Registered Art Therapist. She is on a mission to reduce the chronic burnout that is common for so many women, parents, helpers, and healers using the power of art, nature, and the creative process. You don’t have to be artistic or have any art experience to benefit from art therapy. Lanie didn’t discover art until she was 18-years-old. Everyone has a creative side, some of us just lose touch with that part of ourselves as we go through adolescence and become more self-conscious. “This isn’t about you being the best or the worst artist. We’re not judging it. We’re just using a non-verbal style of communication here. This is just another outlet for you to express yourself.” Embracing creativity can help change behaviors that are reinforced by ourselves and society, and these behaviors can cause us to push ourselves and burn out. You can embrace creativity in any part of your life – it doesn’t have to involve putting pen to paper or paint to canvas. You can be creative in the kitchen, at work or even in your closet. There’s no limit to the number of ways that we can be creative. “You are enough. Regardless of how overwhelming things might seem, whether you’re starting a new practice or you’re a new graduate in school or a parent with multiple kids, you are enough.” Lanie and her practice are a much-needed force of welcoming and warming in an over-worked world.
