Earlier this week I posted on both Instagram and TikTok for suicide prevention month. Because I only get 90 seconds there, I wanted to come here on the podcast and talk more at length about it. What you'll hear in this minisode are the stories of three different occasions where I thought about taking my own life. The last time it happened, in the summer of 2023, which is where I spend the most time, especially those acute moments…when you don't have anything to distract you and you're alone with your thoughts. I hope your takeaways can be one of two things. One, that you feel less alone if this is you or you have been here, or help you understand what happens to people when they enter this place. If you need help, please call or text 988. For our season 7 finale episode, we're taking you behind the scenes with co-host Drew Horning and executive producer Julie Daley. The idea came about when Drew and Julie met in person for the first time the day after Thanksgiving - over three and a half years after starting this podcast together. It's pretty amazing that people can work together so closely to create something near and dear to them, and have never met in person. But the real story is why the podcast came into being, to begin with. It has to do with you, our listeners, graduates of the Process. In the first few months of the pandemic, the podcast was just one of a slew of new projects initiated by the Institute in service of staying connected to and supporting our graduate community. Along with others, Drew and Julie came together to brainstorm how to create the first Hoffman Institute podcast in April 2020. Sound engineer, Walt Hubis, joined us and in the middle of May 2020, after releasing our first three episodes of the Podcast, we were off and running with the release of our fourth episode. In time, both Sharon Mor and Liz Severin joined as co-hosts. We'd found our team. We hope you enjoy learning a bit about how all this came together and the "why" behind what makes doing this so meaningful for us. Happy New Year to you and yours. The Hoffman Podcast will return with season 8 in February 2024. We look forward to sharing conversations with a whole new group of graduates with you. About Drew Horning: Drew Horning is a former licensed private practice psychotherapist with a Master's in clinical work from the University of Michigan. He is trained in EMDR, Mediation and Dispute Resolution, Gottman Couples Counseling, and Brené Brown's Daring Way. He also hosts a podcast on relationships and coached high school basketball. Drew published his book, Grappling: White Men's Journey from Fragile to Agile, in May 2021. Drew values his role in calling forth students' courage and supporting them on their healing journey. He recalls how amazed he was at the speed of change during the week of his Process. “Sure, there was work to do once the week was over; but I was able to tap into parts of myself and what I wanted for my life in ways that I had never experienced before … despite years of therapy.” Drew lives in Boulder, CO with his wife of over 20 years, Genny, and their two children. About Julie Daley: Julie Daley is the executive producer of the Hoffman Podcast. It is her great joy to work in support of the Hoffman Process. Julie did her Process in August 2002. There, she experienced deep, abiding love and boundless joy. Julie left knowing she had been deeply transformed. A graduate of Stanford University, Julie is also a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) and a certified teacher of Creativity in Business, a course originally taught at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Julie loves supporting others in coming home to their Essence and finding their courage to share this essential, creative nature with the world. Julie enjoys artistic expression through writing prose and poetry, dancing, painting, and photography. She is the author of Here: Poems, Prose, and Photography. Julie lives in the Bay Area and is a grandmother to six beautiful, treasured human beings. https://media.blubrry.com/the_hoffman_podcast/content.blubrry.com/the_hoffman_podcast/Behind_the_Scenes_Podcast_Final.mp3 As mentioned in this episode: Walt Hubis, Sound Engineer for the Hoffman Podcast • Listen to Walt on the Hoffman Podcast Sharon Mor, Hoffman Podcast co-host • Listen to Sharon and Drew on the Hoffman Podcast Liz Severin, Hoffman Podcast co-host • Listen to Liz on the Hoffman Podcast Jason-Aeric Huenecke, Hoffman Process Graduate, and Podcast guest • Listen to Jason-Aeric on the Hoffman Podcast Jack Rafferty, Hoffman Process Graduate, and Podcast guest • Listen to Jack on the Hoffman Podcast Ian Salvage,
Today's topic is one that's near and dear to my heart and probably yours– emotions. As someone who's had quite a journey in this arena, I'm always looking for ways to better understand them, as well as allow emotions to run their course naturally. I'm talking more specifically about “off loading” emotions, a subject I learned more about in my Daring Way™ training. It comes specifically from Brené Brown's book, Rising Strong, and in this episode, I'm breaking down all of the ways we avoid dealing with our emotions. At the end of the episode, I'll also go over some ways to process emotions as well. Happy emoting! In this episode, we welcome Aiko Bethea, CEO & Founder of RARE Coaching & Consulting, to discuss overcoming toxic productivity. Our BWL community attracts many high achievers. They are often the “firsts” in their families and communities…the first to graduate college, the first to be on their level of leadership, the first one that people call when they need help…and the list goes on. In the workplace, research shows that Black women are often held to higher standards, and are more likely to have their contributions overlooked. These roles and standards combined with the consistent unrealistic and violent expectations of systemic oppression, may cause us to adopt these harmful standards of achievement and perfectionism as truth. For many, this causes feelings of unworthiness as we begin to equate our identity (who we are) to our achievements (what we do), creating a toxic cycle that negatively impacts our self-concept and overall wellness. In Aiko's words: "The same thing that can be killing us, which is toxic productivity and perfectionism, is also the same thing that opens doors for us. Therefore, it's so important for us to have those checkpoints of 'what am I doing and who am I doing it for?' Because the world may be completely rewarding you over and over for behavior that's actually killing you." This episode gives you a moment to reflect on your own relationship with productivity and perfectionism. Aiko breaks down the signs of toxic productivity, and provides insight on steps we can take to resist and heal from it. Additionally, we discuss the power of centering ourselves, and share practical ways to do so in our personal and professional lives. “Do you know anyone well versed in leading a conversation about betrayal - giving language to the emotions, and opening up to healing? Bonus points if it's you.” That was the invitation to Dr. Tracey O'Connell, who graciously said yes. She's an incredible human - deeply insightful, compassionate, and empathetic. Tracey has lived a full & courageous life. She started as a Radiologist and has evolved her skills to include facilitating Dr. Brené Brown's Daring Way program, leading expressive writing programs, and coaching people on sustainable well-being and positive self-worth. She knows how to lead difficult conversations. Today's conversation is about betrayal. It's a complex topic entangled with strong emotions, and is a deep wound for many of us. We'll share our stories and do some processing in real time. We'll also talk about what has helped in the past and what helps us today. Experiencing complex emotions, such as betrayal, is part of the human experience. The episode is an offering for you to give language to any deep wounds that may be present, and start the journey of healing knowing that you are not alone. Tracey O'Connell, MD is a self-described "recovering physician" who expanded her career in Radiology to being an educator, speaker, and coach, fostering positive self-worth and sustainable well-being with teens, physicians, and LGBTQ+. She is a certified facilitator of expressive writing and Brené Brown's shame resilience programs. Her change of direction came after many years of feeling "not enough" as a person, a physician, a parent, or partner. She learned that helping people FEEL better helps them feel BETTER. Owning how we actually feel, how we'd like to feel, how we don't want to feel, and how others feel, significantly helps sustain our self-worth and well-being. Holly is a licensed clinical social worker in Memphis, TN. She has worked across the spectrum of mental health levels of care and brings that experience with her into private practice. Holly specializes in helping people recover from difficult life experiences that some label as “trauma.” Trauma comes in many forms and we don't all know how to recognize it, but it shows up as anxiety, depression, substance abuse and other mental health problems. Trauma is often accompanied by shame and Holly has specialty training as a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator at building shame resiliency. The Daring Greatly™, Rising Strong™ and Gifts of Imperfection treatment models are based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown and fall under the umbrella of The Daring Way™. In addition to her Daring Way™ training Holly is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and has extensive experience with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) from her training at Four Winds Hospital in Katona, New York. Her training in DBT and yoga classes at the local gym inspired Holly to gain more education in mindfulness. On a chance retreat to Kripalu Yoga Center in the Berkshire Mountains, Holly was introduced to the work of Jack Kornfield, PhD and has continued to practice and study Insight Meditation for the past ten years. In 2018 she took her yoga practice to the next level with a 200 hour RYT training at Yoga Landing in Chattanooga. Along the yoga journey Holly was introduced to the power of Breathwork by Ashley Ludman in Costa Rica. Holly has since continued to train with Ashley and develop her own skills as a breathwork facilitator. In 2022 Holly and her husband relocated to Memphis and she is excited to return to private practice focusing on creating a safe place for those who are in transition (divorce, grief, empty-nesting, job change), supporting a loved one with a substance use disorder diagnosis/severe mental illness, or recovering from emotional abuse or trauma. She will use her expertise to guide you towards healing and resilience for optimal functioning. She has a love for working with adolescents and their families as they transition through this formative time. Her practice is LGBTQ affirming and she strives for cultural competency at work and in the world. What an amazing conversation I had with Cyndi Doyle, as I like to call her the savior of the law enforcement relationship. She comes from experience and shares what she has discovered to give Leo couples the tools to win and live a life of love, gratitude, and intimacy. She's the real deal and we uncovered the reasons why we fail at relationships but more importantly we discussed what we can do to address those issues and get ahead of it. Real world problem solving!! CYNDI DOYLE, LPC-S, NCC, CDWF, CISM Cyndi is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas and a Nationally Board Certified Counselor (NCC). She is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator for the programs created by Dr. Brené Brown including The Daring Way™ and Rising Strong™. She shifted her life in 2014 when she was faced with the reality of either never trying a single one of her "crazy" ideas from her "Big Idea Fairy" (B.I.F.) or living life a little scared and trying. She now uses fear as an indicator that something is meaningful and worth trying rather than running away. #fearismylovelanguage Since embracing her B.I.F., Cyndi has become a recognized speaker, podcaster, author, and recognized internationally as an expert in her niche. Cyndi is known for her educational and entertaining presentation style to both first responders and mental health professionals. Are you in a healthy relationship with your business? With your creative practice? Or is it unrequited love? On this episode of The Autonomous Creative, I talk to psychologist, author and business therapist, Nicole Lewis-Keeber. As a business therapist, Nicole uses her eighteen years of experience as a clinical social worker to help small businesses owners and entrepreneurs break the cycles of abuse they've established in their working lives. It's not only about running a business — or doing the creative work! — you love, but setting it up to love you back. We also discuss different types of trauma, how to identify them, and the importance of establishing boundaries in any healthy relationship. Plus, what causes money trauma and how can you get out from under it? Finally, Nicole shares her refreshing perspective on the inner critic, which I previously wrote about in a blog post called, “How to Silence Your Inner Critic: Embrace it.” For Nicole, the best way to handle the inner critic isn't to “overcome,” “conquer,” or “master” it, but to approach it with compassion and patience. Maybe even let it sit in the backseat? It might have something important to tell you. Learn more about embracing your inner critic here. More from the episode... How did Nicole recognize - and end - the ‘abusive relationship dynamic' she had accidentally created with her business? Why are boundaries around time and money so important for our mental health? Nicole identifies what ‘big-T' and ‘small-t' trauma look like, and how they can lead to behavior patterns that negatively impact our work. The number one reason ‘changing your mindset' doesn't work when dealing with a trauma response: “The inner critic is going to call bullshit on it.” “You're going to find a little bit of wisdom about something that needs to be healed.” — Why Nicole recommends recruiting your inner critic, rather than exiling it. The importance of recognizing unsupportive systems, in the past and present, and how they affect you: “You can stop gaslighting yourself.” What's the relationship between money and trauma? Nicole breaks down the steps for creating an ‘emotional stability plan' that can help make your work less triggering. Have you or someone you love experienced grief? We all have. We usually think about grief as it relates to the loss of a loved one. But in today's episode Dr. Yvonne Ator and I are discussing grief as it relates to all the other types of loss we may encounter... the loss of a job, a friendship, your health, a marriage, a child going away to college, the ability to bear children, and so many more. Dr. Ator is passionate about helping people, especially physicians, thrive through their grief and move forward with meaning. It is such a great conversation and is so relevant to what so many of us are experiencing. We hope you enjoy it!***************In this episode, Dr. Yvonne Ator discuss Thriving Through Grief including answers to the following questions:- How did Dr. Ator become interested in coaching people through burnout, grief and loss?- Other than death of a loved one, what sorts of situations or circumstances can cause grief?- What strategies can we learn to meet grief and move past it?- What is DABGA?- Why is it important to go through different phases of grief?- What are adaptive vs. maladaptive ways to grieve?- What is the difference between numbing and comforting?- Why is it important to incorporate moderation into our grieving process?- Why is it so hard to identify what we need?- How can we grieve in a way that supports us?- How does grief help us heal?- What happens if we don't process grief in a healthy way?- How can grief be intentional?- Is there an appropriate amount of time to grieve?- Why is self-compassion so important during the grief process?- How can you utilize grief to move forward or make meaning?- How do we remain nonjudgmental toward those experiencing loss or grief?***************Dr. Yvonne Ator serves as a personal and executive coach for mission-driven physicians. A Certified Facilitator of the Daring Way and Dare To Lead from Brene Brown, she is also a certified in other coaching methodologies including Personal and Executive Coaching Positive Psychology and Unbeatable Mind Coaching (Mental Toughness and Emotional Resilience training from Retired Navy SEAL Commander Mark Divine). She is passionate about creating wholehearted culture in medicine and helping physicians thrive in their personal and professional lives without succumbing to compassion fatigue, disillusionment or burnout while making their positive impact in the world. As the Founder of Thriving Physicians and Thriving Idealist, she has spent the past several years coaching mission-driven Physicians and other helping professionals who desire to serve and lead sustainably and thrive in their personal and professional lives while making their positive impact in the world without succumbing to disillusionment, moral injury, compassion fatigue or burnout. As a sheepdog for sheepdogs, she equips helpers and leaders struggling with overwhelm, overwork or feeling stuck with tools and resources to master themselves so they can live authentically and serve to their fullest potential. Yvonne is also passionate about creating daring leadership and courage cultures in the workplace.Born in England, raised in several states in Nigeria and the United States, Yvonne was the quintessential idealist who wanted to change the world through medical mission. However, after finding herself at a crossroads, overwhelmed and compassion-fatigued as a new mom having to choose between her mental health and burnout in the medical profession she had sacrificed everything for, Yvonne became an avid advocate for physician wellness, courageous service and leadership, suicide prevention and a more wholehearted culture in the workplace. After losing her comatose dad during a physician strike and finding herself homeless, divorced and financially destitute, Yvonne realized the pitfalls of bu

Tracey O'Connell, M.D. is an educator and a coach who primarily works with LGBTQ+ teens and families. She has been collaborating with Brene Brown's organization, Daring Way, and works as a Daring Way facilitator. The key components of these teachings are leading with courage, shame, vulnerability, authenticity, self-compassion, and resilience. These universal human themes provide a container for any mental health work, but are specifically useful for the LGBTQ community. In this episode, Tracey and I talk about how LGBTQ youth are often more "woke" and aware than non-marginalized youth. "They are the wisest, most trustworthy, and inclusive kids I have ever worked with", Tracey says, "They understand how curiosity over criticism is important for all humans to practice." Tracey and I share that when we talk to the youth, and in particular the LGBTQ youth, we feel more optimistic and hopeful about the future. Tracey explains how judging others ("othering") limits the richness of a full life experience. Rather, explore curiosity over criticism. Our conversation evolves into a discussion about suffering and how parents often sacrifice their own well-being when their children are in crisis. I share my personal story about the catalyst moment that allowed me to transform my suffering into pleasure, humor, and service. Tracey encourages us to remain open to new ideas and experiences and explains how so much of our suffering can be eased by curiosity and play. Coffee Talk Topic: Responding to the Holy Spirit This episode's coffee talk topic encompasses unexpected blessings when responding to the Holy Spirit. Especially when He whispers in times of extreme challenge or unlikely circumstances. Neither of which are challenging or unlikely to God but orchestrated by Him. Featured are two powerful interviews given by two very brave women who've overcome extraordinary life challenges. Both include painful and critical childhood surgeries that would change their lives forever. Host Brandee Nielsen says "It's nothing short of privilege and blessing for us to receive these testimonies about the faithfulness of God in the lives of those who believe in Him. I pray these interviews will bear absolute truth about what the power, hope, and purpose of Christ can do in your life." Featured Guest No 1: Justine Froelker Justine Froelker is an author, speaker, and Podcaster. She's a certified Daring Way and Dare to Lead facilitator based on the research of Doctor Bernay Brown. Justine says that she's an advocate for speaking unspoken shame and choosing to thrive when life doesn't turn out how you hoped or dreamed or planned. Justine joins Christian Coffee Talk to chat about overcoming grief and how we can empower ourselves to overcome any odds through faith, and by responding to the Holy Spirit. Featured Guest No 2: Barbara Marlowe Barbara Marlowe is an author and marketing and public relations professional. She served on several boards for nonprofits and is a current member of the University Hospital's, Rainbow Babies and Children's Leadership Council. But its a story of faith overcoming improbability, which is something that we all need to hear."
