How do you name your YouTube channel? It's one of the most important things when starting one, because this is how people are going to remember you. In today's episode, Nate discusses this with Karen Farfan, who he's helping to launch her own YouTube channel. Check it out! Okay, we are a few episodes into launching your YouTube channel. We're deciding the name. And so the topic of this episode is how to name your YouTube channel. Definitely got some biases because different channel names can have a big impact on the result your channel gets. So have you thought about channel name? Do you... Have you thought about what you like want to name your channel before I give you any advice? Your best friend is your own name - I'll agree with that. I'll say when you want to build a following, you want to build a tribe that of people that you can influence. You mentioned the word impact in an earlier episode. Having a channel built around your name, really, really helps. You know I currently produce a dozen different channels and we've used different strategies. My biggest channel in fact, we've gone through some name changes. Which yes once you pick a name you can change it down the road. But you've just got to let your audience know and kind of make that a gradual change. So with with Kris Krohn that we've talked about before, his channel used to be called RE investor tv.com. RE for real estate and then he branded around the name of limitless and so we changed the name to Limitless TV and at that... With that name, the channel grew really, really big. And then we just started recognizing people want to connect with Kris and Kris Krohn's, his name and so, we we didn't just change his channel name from Limitless TV to Kris Krohn but we put in Kris Krohn - Limitless TV and we started incorporating a new logo and slowly phasing. Over a six month period, it was just within the last few weeks that we took out the name Limitless TV and now Limitless TV isn't on there anymore. Now it's all brand. It's all the past episodes. Still say limitless but we made that gradual transition. So you mentioned that you you've heard that and that's kind of been why you've leaned towards it. What do you see is some of the benefits of having the channel be Karen Farfan. It's not specific to just one topic then it can go ahead and touch every subject that defines Karen Farfan - yeah, that's exactly right. People will learn who you are. There's value in you and your name, you're unique. So there's there's a disadvantage if you ever wanted to sell your YouTube channel or sell your business or brand, it's so connected to you but at the same time, when people follow you and it's based on your name, I'll give you an example. So there's there's a channel that I follow up called Veritasium. It's Veritas. I guess in Latin means truth and it's an element of truth. He's a science guy. Does science and physics videos. I've learned his name, Derek Muller but I bet a lot of people don't know him by his name. You know they don't know who Derek Muller is. They just know his channel and I've I wonder if he's had some difficulties in kind of building the brand around. Well yeah, I do want to have Derek Muller come in as a speaker because he speaks he likes to speak in this one of the ways he monetizes his channel. Versus you know Casey Neistat. Very popular YouTuber. You're familiar with Casey Neistat? It's branded around his name. There's a lot of vlogs that that are like that but you know, there's a lot of strength and influence come when you brand around your name . So that is actually my recommendation for you - is to use your name. Well, talk to me about that. What do you mean? For a lot of time I was bringing storming. I need a name that came in Spanish speakers. Can think about the best and so I was struggling with that. If you pick a Spanish name a Spanglish name and kind of combine them. So I just think it makes it more simple - yeah, where is the name Parfran from? As far as I know, Colombia - because this you know as an American hearing that name, I can pronounce it easier. There's no challenge with it and if it's a Colombian name, it sounds like they'll hear it and not be confused by it. It doesn't sound foreign to people in Colombia is what I'm asking - okay. We can name your channel like Karen Jones. May be ... Sometimes if people have a real complex name like Gary Vaynerchuk. He changed his brand to Gary Vee and now he regrets spelling Vee just because it's... I guess it's still a little bit more complicated. He wished you would have just branded it Gary and then the letter V. So sometimes it makes sense to the simple fighter just go by like Ellen. I guess it... Okay, I do know her last name DeGeneres but most people know where is the Ellen right or Oprah Winfrey okay's those examples don't work as I do you know their last name. If Karen were as unique a name as Oprah maybe you could just name your channel Karen. What do you think about maybe having a tagline so your name and then tagline that you absolutely love. Having a tagline and having wording and knowing what your branding is really helpful. What I recommend is to not put it in every episode because if an episode starts out - "Hey everybody, this is Karen the Parfan, the expert of this, this, this and this. Where you're going to find this and get... It sounds to scripted words. People just want to connect with you. It's like, "Hey it's a new day and today, you know we're going to make the smoothie. So that's sounds cool. I'm just going with Karen. We're making a smoothie in her kitchen. So it's more personal and and they can relate. There's... It's not corporate. They're not... They don't feel like they're getting a sales pitch or that it's some company that's promoting you know a high speed blender or you know something like that. So that's my recommendation. But then on your banner, you know you just put what you stand for and you can definitely have your tag lines. When people then want to know more, they want to buy something from you or they want to know what services you offer, they'll leave you to they'll go to your website. Your website has all your branding. It will have your tagline. Any promo videos will be all fully scripted and will have sales psychology in there. But the episodes you put on YouTube, people are finding you for the first time. You're building that relationship. You're giving things away. Your secrets for free. You're not pitching them and at the end you're giving them an invitation to come and check you out over here and then this is where you can be as corporate and professional and polished as you want. I'm definitely biased on naming your YouTube channel your name. You know my channel is now Nate Woodbury. I want people to know me by Nate. My previous company name was Wallaby web design. People got to know me as they would even call me Nate Wallaby. I'm like, "Nate Wallaby?" So I quickly learned. I'm very glad that people now know me as Nate Woodbury and you know, they'll put me in different categories as the YouTube guy or the video guy or whatnot. So for you as a viewer, I'm curious what you're gonna name your YouTube channel. So go ahead comment below. I disallowed links. So you can't put a link to your channel, it won't show up. But if you type the name of your channel then I'll be able to find it. In the next episode, we're actually going to be talking about how to make your videos look professional while at the same time not looking corporate. So that's we're going to cover next. We'll see that.
So now you have decided to have your own Youtube channel. What should you name it? Nate Woodbury and Valerie Morris weigh-in on what you should consider before naming your channel. So, you're wondering what to name your YouTube channel? I mean what should it be? Right? Should it be your name? Should it be your company name? So, it'd be a cool name. I have a very specific opinion on this. And I'm going to share that with you. So, I've got Valerie Morris here. She is building her YouTube channel. -Yep. -She's expert on influence. She wrote the book on influence. We're All Ears. You can find it on Amazon and you've got several questions about this. Wondering what to name it. So, tell me. Tell me in your words what's your question? -Well, I'm just curious kind of what are the biggest factors that people should have, you know... And the top of their mind, as they're thinking about naming their channel. -In most cases, there's always going to be exceptions. So, I'm going to talk in general. And I work with a lot of influencers. So, that's where my answers are coming from. You don't want to use a company name. -Okay. -In most cases, you want to just use your own individual name because people want to connect with someone. -Okay. -And the more that they'll see a company brand or a business name or a logo or something, the more they realize, "Oh, I might be getting pitched to." Now, your videos could be identical. But just because that's the first thing that they see versus if they, if they see your name Valerie Morris. Or I'm thinking like MarieTV. She's got her whole... Whole company. But yet, it's it's Marie, right? That's the first recommendation I give is generally it's just going to be your name. -Great. Okay, so you mentioned Marie TV. I see a lot of people putting TV behind their name. What do you think about that? Is that a positive thing? Is that a negative thing? I think with Marie it rhymes. It's catchy. We've done it. We used to have Limitless TV. And then we recognized, "You know what? We really want it to be branded more around Kris Krohn." That's his name. And so we've just been transitioning away from Limitless TV. So right now, if you find the channel at the filming of this video, it says Kris Krohn - Limitless TV. Because we're so long people got familiar with the name limitless. We just put TV in there because it sounded cool. I don't know that... People call it, "Yeah, limitless TV. It's a... It's a show. But because of the importance and the value of building around the brand Kris Krohn in his name, we were making that transition. There's no longer do you see the logo of Limitless anymore. And we're ready now. So, any day now, we'll be deleting the Limitless TV part of that. Kind of a weird way to answer question but it just it sounds like a catchy name is why we called it that. -Okay. So, I've noticed that you know. you talked a lot about keywords. Obviously you put the keywords in the video title but what about the channel name? Do you want to have any specific keywords in that the title of or the name of your channel? -You don't need to worry about that at all. And I'll also relate this to your website. Because originally when we started doing SEO for for websites, you wanted to get a domain name (.com) that had a keyword in it. -Yeah. -So, like publicspeaker.com or lifecoach.com or socialmediamaster.com. -Yeah. -That really stopped working many many years ago. -Okay. -And on YouTube... I mean, you can. There's some strategy in it. But what it does is it it kind of paints you into a corner. Let's say that I call it YouTube corner. Okay? I'm literally in the corner of YouTube. What if I wanted to talk about LinkedIn or I wanted to talk about Instagram or I wanted to talk more in general about influence? People would be coming to the YouTube corner. "What? you're talking about something else?" So again, there is... There is some reasons why that could be advantageous to go into a direction of a topic like that around some type of keyword that you want to rank for. In Kris's case, you know, we originally called the channel back before his Limitless TV. We called it RE investor TV. He loves personal development. He loves belief breakthrough in mindset. And he so wants... And we were making a lot of money in the real estate niche. But he loves putting on events like Tony Robbins. I mean, he has people walk on broken glass and do all this crazy stuff. And people love his events. But on YouTube, he's not really known for that. So, he really wants to step into that territory. And I think just by consistently mixing that in with the realist content, will eventually get there. We won't be able to do that if we just kept the name of the channel real estate investor TV. -Right. You kind of target yourself so much that you can't do other things. -Another example is my own. I've experimented with vlogging. And vlogging is a lot of fun. It's a whole lot of work. And so, I've recognized that I don't want to have a separate channel that's a vlog. But occasionally, I just want to put vlogs in there. And if my channel were more branded or more focused around a keyword, it wouldn't relate. But hey this is the Nate Woodbury Channel. I could talk about whatever I want. I can vlog, I can... I mean, I've... I've gone mountain biking at slickrock and Moab Utah. I put that on this channel. If people don't like those, fine. It's a Nate Woobury channel. -So, what are some of the biggest mistakes you've seen with people when they've named their channel? And is it okay to make a mistake? How do you... Is it easy to change? -Well, certainly. I think... I think I've covered some of those mistakes of naming a channel so maybe I could also talk about the mistakes people make when naming videos. -Okay. -But also... If you don't like your name, you can change it. -Okay. -The biggest mistake people make in naming the titles of their videos is that they don't do keyword research first. -Okay. -They'll often name it like they'll name their show. So, let's say it's the influence show with Valerie episode 6. Podcaster I've often named that way too. It's a terrible mistake because people who are searching for your content will never find it. -Right. -You know, you've named it something way broad and it's just episode this. It doesn't go really really specific. So, of course, I talked a lot about keyword research on this channel. And that's one of the biggest reasons why and that's one of the biggest mistakes I see. When people come to me and say, "Hey, can you do an analysis of my YouTube channel and give me some advice?" I'll open it up. I'll bring up the whole spread of videos in front of me. And several things that I look at. One of the first is what are these titles? You know, are they... Are they specific? Are they searchable or are they just episode 57? Episode 58. That's a huge mistake. Another one is not really taking advantage of custom thumbnails. It's custom thumbnails or what are the first thing that people see. We just talked about judging a book by it's cover. -Right. -Cover on YouTube is that thumbnail. And that title like you've got to put energy into designing a better thumbnail that's going to encourage people to click you really want to create curiosity. And I do encourage some type of consistency. So that if there's a whole list of thumbnails that video choices that YouTube's recommending and people like you, if they see a brand new thumbnail for me can they recognize instantly, maybe it's your face. Maybe that's the thing that's consistent is that your face is always in the thumbnail. Or maybe you know, there's a blue circle on the on the side of every thumbnail. And so that's got to be one from Valerie. You know? So, something like that is good to have. And it's a mistake that most people they don't even pay attention to stuff like that. -Wow. Well, I think you know, as far as like starting off a new channel. I feel a lot more confident to go and figure out what my name is going to be. -Mm-hmm. -And a little bit more comfortable to use my name. -Good. Now, some people have heard to spell names. I mean you think of Gary Vaynerchuk. -Yeah. -He went... He just chose to go Gary V. And he regrets spelling it out "V" because he's like why don't I ever do that? It's just been the letter Gary V. And so I think that's what he's doing now. You can play around. Marie TV? I don't know what her last name is. But maybe it's a hard name. Maybe that's why she just shortened it to Marie TV. So, there's... There's different things to consider. I don't know anyone personally that's actually changed and made up a pen name. But you know, that's that's always something to consider. Because it is, it is a person. And people like, was Elvis was that his real name? -I don't even know? Look at... Comment below was Elvis, Elvis's real name? I don't know. -Now, what about if you create more than 1 channel? Do you want them both to be named your name? How do you differentiate? -So, it takes so much work and and so much time and energy to make one channel successful. -Yeah. -That having 2 channels is double the amount of work. Double attention and focus. It's going to be a rare occasion that I'll actually recommend that somebody has 2 separate channels. There's got to be a real specific reason to do that. If you've got one channel that's your name then the other channel could probably be something else. Maybe it's a secondary channel or maybe that one is more business-focused. Or... Or more. It's just for family or something like that. If anyone watching here has a specific scenario of I really do think I should do 2 separate channels. Maybe I've got 2 different companies. One's a restaurant and one's an auto mechanic place. I mean maybe you don't put videos or content on the same Channel. But you've got 2 different businesses. This business has one focus of one channel. So what's that helpful? -Oh, yeah. Absolutely. -So, hopefully that answered some of your questions. And if you have any others, please comment below. And we'll see in the next episode.
Part of Nate Woodbury's expertise is producing YouTube videos. In this episode, he will be sharing with us how to get it right at the start of every video, giving your audience a reason to watch - a hook, line and sinker. Check this out! Is there a best way to start a YouTube video? I mean, is there something you can do at the beginning of every episode to make your videos better? I've filmed hundreds of YouTube episodes every month for my clients. And this is the main coaching that I provide, is how to start YouTube episodes. So, I'm going to show you how to do it the right way. Hey there! I'm Nate Woodbury. Currently producer of 10 daily YouTube channels. I'll name a couple of them. First one is Kris Krohn, Limitless TV. Kris and I started that channel from scratch. We're now approaching 370,000 subscribers. And it's doing very well. That one is bringing in over $400,000 per month. Another one, you could look up, it's really fun is Live On Purpose TV with Paul Jenkins. Lot's of parenting topics, lots of relationship topics. We started that one about a year ago. Just over a year ago, it had 235 subscribers. We're now up to 50,000 subscribers. And one thing that we paid attention to at the beginning of every episode is how to start. Starting it the right way. And I started this episode that way. There are 2 ingredients. One, you've got to tell the viewer what the video is about. Okay? Pretty simple. But that's half the battle. You got to tell people what the video is about. Now, as a side note, I do keyword research before filming. Okay? I talk about this in a lot of my other episodes. I do keyword research to find the questions people are asking about my skillset, about my subject matter. And then I title the video that question. So then I attracting, I'm using YouTube search to pull in my target audience. They are searching for these topics and now I'm answering their questions. So. when I start out my episode and I tell them what the video is about, they know that they found what they're searching for. Okay, what's ingredient number 2? Well, you've got to give them a WHY. Why should they watch? What's in it for them? They know what the video is about but should they really watch this video or should they go find another video on the same topic. You know, why should they watch this one? So, you can give them a little bit of credibility. You can tell them the outcome. Okay? So, maybe I'll demonstrate. So, at the beginning of this episode, I told you what the video is about that we're going to talk about how to start every YouTube episode. And then I told you what's going to happen. You know, that I've got some experience and by watching this video, you're going to learn how to do what I do. So, let's just give a few examples. Let's say the topic of your video is How to get rid of strep throat without antibiotics. This is how I might start that episode: Hey, there! Welcome back. Do you have strep throat? Yeah, that's no fun. And typically the only way we've heard of that we can get rid of strep throat is with antibiotics. Well, in this episode, I'm going to share with you a remedy of how to get rid of strep throat without antibiotics. Okay, so I kind of did that in reverse there. I'm just making up as I go. But I really had a conversation. Like talk to them. It's like you've got this problem. And yeah, we're stock. We've only got this solution. Well, I've got the remedy. I'm going to teach you and then I told what the video is about. So, maybe there's an example for you. Okay, here's another example. Welcome back, in today's episode, we're going to talk about how to invest in real estate with no money. Is it possible? Well, I do that all the time. I actually just bought a property last week using no money of my own. I'm going to show you exactly how I did that. Okay. So, I said the title of the video is. That would be one of Kris' topics right? I said what the title of the video was. And then I gave a little credibility. Hey, I've done this. And in fact, I did it a week ago. And I'm going to show you exactly how I did it. So, it really just like, "Wow. Okay, I know what the topic of the video is how to do this. But I'm going to learn exactly how...? Yeah, I got to watch this." Right? It really creates that compelling desire that I got to watch it. This is for me. Alright. Here's another example. We'll do a veggie dip sauce video that we recently did. Hey, welcome back. I have an amazing recipe that I discovered for a veggie dip that has so many healthy ingredients but one, it's got a ton of olive oil. So, we're going to do an experiment. We've got 4 different herb placements that we're going to use in place of the olive oil and see which one tastes best. So, now when I told them what the video is about. I told them it's a recipe of a veggie dip sauce. And then I let them know, we're going to be doing an experiment and find out which one is best. And so, it kind of creates curiosity as like, "Wow! I want to know. I want to know what the secret ingredient is." Does that make sense? So, that's you've got to do. It's as simple as that. At the beginning of every episode, tell people what the video is about and then make sure they have a compelling reason why they should watch it. If you enjoyed this video, then you know what to do. You can like it, you can comment below. Comment section really helps. So, if you want to help me out in this channel and return the favor, then comment below. We'll see you in the next episode.
