We have reached Friday and Marc and Dan talk about some of the top stories of the day and some democrats are now upset that some flipped in order to re-open the government. In Buck Don't Give a #&^@ the discussion is about life after delivery. Finally, Affordability in America.
Congress voted on Wednesday to end the longest federal shutdown in the nation's history. Virginia Senator Tim Kaine joined a handful of Democrats to broker a deal with Senate Republicans. The deal included reversing some federal layoffs and guaranteeing payment for furloughed workers. What it did not include was an extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits, a provision many Democrats insisted Republicans needed to add before they'd approve a funding bill. Sen. Kaine joined the show to explain why he voted to end the shutdown, despite pushback from many in his own party.Kain said on the Politics Hour that there was no path forward on healthcare subsidies without reopening the government. He said he voted only after securing federal worker protections from the White House, including back pay, rehiring workers who were fired during the shutdown, and an end to mass layoffs."I'm getting some holy hell, but I'm getting a lot of thanks from Virginians," the Senator said. "There were bad options, and so I have no judgment about anybody who resolved this question differently than me."He also said he's optimistic about a December vote to extend healthcare subsidies, given the growing pressure on Congress to come up with a fix.Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, who represents one of the largest number of federal workers in the country, voted against the deal. Sen. Van Hollen took the mic to explain why he believes the funding agreement won't address rising healthcare costs and will continue to allow President Trump to ignore the law.Sen. Van Hollen also voiced his support for Maryland Governor Wes Moore's redistricting efforts."I believe we should have national nonpartisan line drawing, but Republicans tried to tip the playing field in Texas, and Maryland should maximize its opportunity to protect our Democracy and the Constitution in redistricting," Senator Van Hollen said.Politicos are speculating that At-Large D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie is considering a run for mayor. With D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser still undecided about running for a fourth term, he's among several potential candidates reportedly weighing runs of their own. Councilmember McDuffie also commented on D.C. residents raising questions after recent incidents where D.C. police have collaborated with federal immigration agents. He said the ICE raids need to stop. "There's no deal that I would sign that would permit our law enforcement to work with ICE, and I would want to be unequivocal about that," he said.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org
Every time I speak out about Donald Trump, someone asks: “Well, who SHOULD Christians have voted for?” This is my comprehensive answer. As a former Republican and evangelical pastor, I've been raising the alarm for years about the spiritual cost of aligning the church with Trump's MAGA movement. Today, I walk through five possible voting choices Christians had in 2024 — and why Never Trump isn't just a slogan, it's a moral imperative.
For years, Mackeys Ferry Sawmill in North Carolina relied on exporting its goods to China and Vietnam after a dip in domestic demand for high-quality hardwood. But President Donald Trump’s trade war with China dealt a blow that the mill’s owners say they couldn’t come back from. In July, just months after the president announced his “Liberation Day” tariffs, they decided to shut it down. On today’s Big Take podcast, Bloomberg economics reporter Shawn Donnan goes to the “Old North State” to understand the ripple effect of tariffs on one of the oldest industries in America and how the mill’s owner feels about Trump and his policies, one year after voting for him in the ballot booth. Minnesota lawmakers voted with their parties on the bill to end the federal government shutdown. The U.S. House passed the bill last night that replenishes government funds for agencies shut for more than seven weeks. Republicans Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, Brad Finstad and Pete Stauber backed the bill. Democrats Angie Craig, Betty McCollum, Kelly Morrison and Ilhan Omar voted against. The University of Minnesota is raising concerns about an agreement between Fairview Health Services and a group of physicians at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In a unanimous vote, the St. Paul city council has passed a ban on military-style assault rifles in the city. The ordinance also prohibits large-capacity magazines, binary triggers that increase the rate of fire, and home-assembled firearms known as ghost guns that lack serial numbers. The measure is unenforceable because Minnesota law does not allow local governments to regulate firearms. Gun rights supporters say the measure is illegal and have said they plan to sue the city.

Rebecca is excited to chat with professional explorer Adam Shoalts about his latest book, Vanished Beyond the Map: The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell. https://adamshoalts.com/literature/: Voted by over 200 Independent Bookstores as one of the “Must Read Books” of the Year (Canadian Independent Booksellers Association) Globe and Mail #1 National Bestseller/Toronto Star #1 National Bestseller CBC #1 National Bestseller "In 1910, legendary explorer Hubert Darrell vanished in the uncharted wilderness of the Northwest Territories. A prospector who had been swept up in the Klondike Gold Rush, Darrell later made his name as a wanderer who ventured where few others dared. Famed for his solo journeys, contemporaries regarded Darrell as the hardiest explorer of his day. While his disappearance sparked headlines, soon Darrell's name would also vanish from history, just as surely as he had in the wild. Yet Darrell left behind a trail of letters, journals, and hand-drawn maps. With these faded clues, Adam Shoalts retraces Darrell's forgotten routes through the wilderness, searching for cabin ruins and old campsites. Part detective story, part biography, and part first-person adventure narrative, Vanished Beyond the Map combines expeditions with historical research to solve one of exploration history's enduring cold cases—the mystery of Hubert Darrell." On Tuesday, New York City elected a trust-fund communist as mayor. New Jersey, which seemed to be trending red, put a scandal-ridden Democrat in the governor's mansion. In Virginia, voters rejected a black Republican conservative woman over a woke former CIA spook who pledged to force girls and women to endure biological men in their private spaces again. Oh, and Dems in the Old Dominion also elected a man who wished a political opponent and his children would be murdered so his grieving wife would finally agree with him on policy as she held her family in her arms. The weird part is that all these results were expected for weeks. From the HRA website, Marie-Louise is "rooted in Alaskan soil, not only by virtue of her family's work as the state's largest producer of farm-to-table produce, but also in her long-term commitment to delivering a classical K-12 curriculum in the Catholic tradition to Holy Rosary Academy students.Mrs. Schirda adventured around the globe to achieve her distinctly Catholic education. She attended high school at Trivium School in Massachusetts and then graduated from Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New Hampshire. While at Thomas More, she spent one semester in Rome, steeped in the art and architecture of many magnificent Catholic churches, backdropped by the grandeur and beauty of the ancient ruins. She earned her master's degree in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama from University College Dublin, Ireland, and came back to the States to attend Gonzaga University, where she completed her state licensure to teach. Hello to you listening in Quezon City, the Philippines!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. In 2017 (years before the current madness) Pope Francis said, “Hitler didn't steal the power, his people voted for him, then he destroyed his people.” That's what con men do. Yes, there are days when We the People feel ashamed - even hopeless - for having been duped. At the same time I'm reminded of a line in William Faulkner's 1936 novel Absalom, Absalom!. “Well, Kernel, they kilt us but they ain't whupped us yit!” The quote captures the spirit of the post-Civil War South, suggesting a resilience despite a devastating military loss. For those who paid attention, with that quote Tim Kaine introduced Hillary Clinton ahead of her concession speech. It still applies. Work still remains. Question: If it's true - and I believe it is - we are responsible for the world in which we find ourselves because we alone can change it, how are We the People showing up, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant? How are you finding your voice in these times and what are you saying when you speak up? We the People are casting off our feelings of helplessness, committing to action, reaching for miracle. Where do you find yourself reaching for miracles? Reach! They ain't whupped us yit! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Well folks - it's here - it's an ELECTION DAY SPECIAL episode of Hoagie Mouth - where we touch on politics but dive DEEP on all things Philadelphia Sports. We simply cannot ignore the (idle on the field but not the front office!) Eagles, who continue to add some pieces to round out their defensive staffing. We have a new Jalen! It's Jaelan Phillips from the Dolphins...not sure if I've seen a Jalen spelled that way yet. NO MATTER - it's best available Jalen, every time all the time. We start to predict how the return of the Birds is gonna go - this time it'll be a Monday night matchup on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Do your best John Facinda voice. And then - we embrace the *checks notes* SUPER HOT START for the Sixers. Is their 5-1 record a mirage? Or is this the real deal? We focus on those first few games and start to wonder...is it gonna be a battle for the ages this season against the Celts and the Knicks? Yup. And we haven't even seen McCain and George on the court yet. We are trending UPWARDS ARROW.Next week - the Flyers, I promise. It's a lot. Gonna get Tim on.
