We're back with a new episode of Sound Speed Action as we continue our countdown to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Up next is what feels like an amazing reset for the series — Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011).This is where the franchise really starts to take off. The quality of action and entertainment jumps several levels in this installment. You get the brilliant work of director Brad Bird (The Iron Giant) as well as the first steps of writer Christopher McQuarrie stepping into the Mission world (be on the lookout for more from him soon…), making this an explosive (if sometimes uneven) hit of a movie! The cast brings a lot of fun: Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, raising both his action and comedy game. Simon Pegg's Benji is no longer just the computer guy behind the desk — he's out in the field as a great agent, delivering some fantastic moments. That includes hilarious scenes alongside Cruise and newcomer Jeremy Renner. On the podcast, we debate whether Renner fully fits the mold of these films — what do you think? Paula Patton as Agent Carter (not that Marvel Agent Carter) kicks ass and is a blast to watch as part of the IMF team. Even the smaller roles are memorable, including Tom Wilkinson as the IMF Secretary, Léa Seydoux as assassin Sabine Moreau, and Ving Rhames (he's in it for only 39 seconds, but listen for a great bit about what Rhames pulled off in this movie).Of course, the movie has its flaws: a pretty thin villain character (okay, maybe these movies really aren't about their villains…) and a major tonal shift once the action moves to India. But ultimately, this chapter reignites the series with a much-needed burst of energy, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling new era for the back half of the franchise. Let's go! We'll be back soon with more to share — enjoy this one, and let us know your thoughts.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is available to stream now on Prime Video and Paramount Plus. It's also available to rent or buy on all major platforms. This is a public episode. As this series of the podcast is all about celebrating love in all forms, and especially the relationship we have with ourselves, I am so excited to welcome Hayley Atwell to ‘Reign' because she shared an incredible piece of advice with me earlier in my career which completely changed my relationship with myself and my confidence. So, get ready for more nuggets of wisdom!  As well as being very wise, Hayley knows a thing or two about starring in a blockbuster movie. Hayley has played Agent Carter in six Marvel films including Captain America and two TV series spin-offs - most notably the namesake series, Agent Carter - and most recently you will have seen her dangling from a train, or driving a Fiat 500 at breakneck speed in Rome alongside Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise.  As Hayley returns to her first love of theatre, in the Jamie Llyod's West End production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing' opposite Tom Hiddleston, she joins us to talk about how the play raises some serious questions about cancel culture and our society's gender double standards.  Hayley also talks about learning to walk into rooms as your autentic self, how she wishes she was more compassionate to her younger self and about the lack of male allies for women in Hollywood and beyond. There are a lot of Heartstopper fans who listen to this podcast so we of course chat about her incredible cameo in the Netflix show as Nick's (played by Kit Connor - if you missed his episode of the pod, scroll back and listen after this episode) aunt - which makes me cry every time - and she shares the best piece of advice for learning to manage social anxiety that she learnt from THE Tom Cruise.  This episode is packed full of advice and if you love listening to Hayley as much as I did please get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I'll see you next week for another episode of Reign. Love, Josh x P.S I am so happy that today's episode is brought to you with the support of Pandora. That's why we're empowering you to BE LOVE through these conversations - get out there and feel love, embody love and pass it on because you never know how much it could change your life or someone else's. A disability depiction that's handled respectfully enough for the mid-2010s, a character's military backstory sending Arthur into a rant, and a non-irritating usage of the love triangle trope comprise a few of this episode's talking points. Howard Stark has played a supporting role in the stories of Iron Man, Captain America, and Agent Carter, but what is his story? Caroline and Bridgette argue that Howard is a more complex and ultimately tragic character than he's initially made out to be - both by his son and by fandom. Cynical and heroic, secretly kind and not-so-secretly in love with Steve, Howard struggles with self-esteem and communication issues all his life. We hypothesize about how Howard and Tony's vastly different generations, class backgrounds, and emotional needs contribute to their fraught relationship. We also look at Howard's other relationships throughout the MCU movies and television series. And Bridgette throws in a Pride & Prejudice reference for good measure.

Originally intended to sell newspapers, their popularity soared and before too long there were dozens of artists making different varieties of comics. As they evolved we got comics that were silly, timely, political, and Pulitzer Prize winners.    Classic strips from the 50s, like Peanuts, Marmaduke, Dennis the Menace, and more are still published today, either in reruns (not Linus's brother) or drawn by a new artist.    As the 60s and 70s brought change to the world, the comic pages started reflecting it as well. Timely topics were sometimes presented next to our Beetle Bailey. Pulitzer Prize winning Doonesbury by Gary Trudeau proved that the comics could be important. Spider-Man and Star Wars brought other formats of our entertainment to the comics pages.    And then we got a series of mega stars that blew up the popularity of that beloved illustrated section of the newspaper. Garfield, The Far Side, Bloom County, and Calvin and Hobbes became just a handful of reasons people would pick up the comics in the first place.    How well do you know your comics? Let's play a game to see if you remember the punch line from the very first published strip from a few classics.    Now that newspapers are going the way of the Dodo, what does the future hold for our beloved strip format? We're not sure, but we will continue to start the day with a laugh.   Did you grow up reading comics? What were some of your favorites (or ones you avoided)? In 1933 a 13 year old Ray Harryhausen saw the movie King Kong and it forever changed the way we would experience movies. It inspired him to experiment in techniques of stop motion animation that he would continually improve throughout his entire career.    His impressive resume includes classics like Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, and of course Clash of the Titans. Many of his movies aren't even remembered for who starred in or directed them, but for Ray's special effects. His patented Dynamation technique of incorporating his stop motion creatures enhanced all these movies in a way that made you feel like you were part of the dream.    Countless creators were inspired by Ray's effects, such as Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, and of course the man who carried the mantle, visual effects legend Phil Tippett. Their movies continued to evolve Ray's techniques including how CGI even works today. We are all indebted to Mr. Harryhausen and are grateful for his work.  Which of Ray Harryhausen's works do you like? Have you ever made a stop motion movie? It can't be easy joining a franchise in its seventh installment and holding your own opposite an industry juggernaut like Tom Cruise, but Hayley Atwell still winds up being a major standout in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.The new M:I film introduces Atwell's Grace, or rather “Grace,” a thief who finds herself in the middle of Ethan's (Cruise) mission to track down both halves of a key needed to control a self-aware artificial intelligence program called The Entity. That mission lands Grace in a Fiat 500 with a mind of its own, on a train plummeting into a ravine, and in a number of other mighty dangerous situations. Not only is Atwell an ace in the stunt department, but she also finds great success in bringing a hugely charming, well-layer, and complex character to screen in the midst of all of this mind-blowing action. It's a performance feat that makes Grace feel real and contributes to keeping Dead Reckoning Part One somewhat grounded, which ups the suspense of the film tenfold. With Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One now playing in theaters, Atwell took the time to join me for an episode of Collider Ladies Night. We discussed formative experiences when first beginning her journey as an actor, including an extremely valuable two-week internship with a casting director, her take on making network television after working on Agent Carter, and then jumped into some Mission: Impossible specifics. And we get to talk about their reaction to what's ostensibly some guy in a Halloween costume hopping onto the top of a car and giving them orders. That leads us to Tony and the leviathan he blasts with chaff, leading to massive destruction to not only 3 Park Ave, but also the Sabrett Hot Dog cart. It's a sad day for NYC. We are covering this movie in four parts because processing this level of trauma takes a lot of time. In this episode of Marvelous Divas, we discuss the next phase of Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame before we get to the big fight. We see the ultimate self-sacrifice, the return of characters from the era of Agent Carter, and Tony gets to talk to his dad. We also see one last cameo from Stan Lee! A lot happens in this episode of Marvelous Divas, but trigger warning, we do talk a lot about mental health. We understand skipping this episode if you want to avoid being triggered. This movie is...a...lot.
