This week on And Now For Something Completely Machinima, Phil Rice, Tracy Harwood and Damien Valentine dive into Michael Is Very Vintage's hilarious Garry's Mod space comedy An Astounding Tale from Outer Space. What begins as a simple spaceship emergency quickly spirals into absurdity when an incompetent captain decides that cloning himself is a better solution than actually fixing the problem. The team explores the film's brilliant use of slapstick comedy, satirical storytelling, inventive sound design, and surprisingly sophisticated filmmaking craft. From Alien and Red Dwarf influences to hidden Easter eggs, classic action-movie tropes, and the unique creative possibilities of Garry's Mod, this episode celebrates one of the most entertaining machinima films of the year.Along the way, the discussion turns to Michael's growing signature style, the role of game-engine accidents in comedy, the future of machinima creators working in platforms like Garry's Mod, iClone and Unreal Engine, and whether works like this have a place beyond YouTube in archives, festivals, and cultural collections. This week's pick is a love letter to inventive machinima, creative chaos, and the enduring power of comedic timing. 01:16 – Damien introduces the film and explains why he picked it04:05 – Tracy's reaction: why this is her favourite film of the month05:00 – Cloning, delegation, bureaucracy and the film's satirical core06:30 – Garry's Mod humour, slapstick physics and six personalities from one character07:45 – Alien, Red Dwarf, Futurama and classic sci-fi influences09:26 – The ending, anti-climax as comedy, and why it works10:00 – Outstanding sound design, voice acting and comic timing12:32 – Phil's review: comparing the film to Ridiculous Ties and other animated comedy machinima13:12 – Why Michael Is Very Vintage is developing a distinctive creative voice14:20 – Hidden Easter eggs, visual gags and blink-and-you-miss-them details15:15 – The film's unique soundscape: cartoon logic, meme culture and deliberate absurdity18:30 – Recognising an auteur style in machinima filmmaking19:14 – Deep dive into the film's references, props, set dressing and visual jokes23:30 – What the Easter eggs reveal about the creator's influences and generation27:55 – Michael's rapid output and growing body of work29:24 – Behind-the-scenes videos and custom set construction in Hammer Editor29:50 – Cinematography highlights and impressive in-engine camera work30:52 – A broader question: what future exists for talented Gary's Mod filmmakers?32:20 – Can skills developed in Gary's Mod transfer to animation, virtual production and film?37:15 – Damien on iClone, animation principles and platform-specific comedy38:35 – Does Gary's Mod itself become part of the joke?39:24 – Happy accidents, bugs and creative inspiration in machinima production44:00 – From software glitches to award-winning films45:04 – Physics engines, experimentation and unexpected outcomes46:44 – Final thoughts and audience feedback invitation47:11 – Closing remarksIf you've ever wondered what would happen if the least competent person on a spaceship cloned themselves five times to avoid doing their job, this episode is for you.Credits -Speakers: Phil Rice, Damien Valentine, Tracy HarwoodProducer/Editor: Phil RiceMusic: Phil Rice & SunoAI

Welcome to SHIPWRECKED & COMATOSE, an in-depth podcast dedicated to the classic BBC science-fiction sitcom, Red Dwarf. After finishing out coverage of The Promised Land last year, we're nearly out of 'proper' Red Dwarf content now! There's a few specials and DVD extras that we're going to look in future, but we've covered all the episodes of the show now! As such, we're going to embrace our love of specials covering weird and wonderful stuff peripheral to our favourite sci-fi sitcom! Welcome to our look at the second (and final) series of Hyperdrive. Mark takes hosting duties and is joined by Carl and Rob. Hyperdrive was a Sci-Fi sitcom on BBC2 in the early 00s that was unfairly regarded by some as usurping Red Dwarf starring Kevin Eldon, Miranda Hart and Nick Frost. Did we enjoy our second voyage on the HMS Camden Lock? Tune in and find out! "The Carousel of Hideous Mistakes That Make You Say 'Fuck' In The Middle Of A Supermarket" The loss of Rob Grant earlier this year was a complete shock. Whether you knew him personally or were one of his thousands of fans, it was a bolt out of the blue. It's taken us a little while to be able to talk about it, but with the release of Red Dwarf: Titan - Rob's final work - rapidly approaching, we wanted to get together and discuss just how much he meant to us. So join us for our reminisces about all of G&T's interactions with Rob over the years, discover the origin of that "ex-wife's honeymoon video" quote, relive the moment that Ian's imminent fatherhood was announced to the world unexpectedly, and discover what's on the wall of Rob's downstairs toilet. IS MONSTER PARTY HAVIN' A LAUGH? JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD ponder the age-old question of whether humor and genre topics can live and laugh comfortably together. So, as Elvis Costello might ask… WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT HORROR, SCI-FI, AND FANTASY? Let's face it, making a truly funny horror, sci-fi, or fantasy film or television show can be tricky business. There's a fine line between a loving send-up and an uninformed attack. And even with the best intentions, that doesn't guarantee you'll be watching a knee-slapper. In this side-splitting study of genre jocularity, MONSTER PARTY puts all their funny favorites (and not-so-favorites) to the test. How did films like ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN manage to find the sweet spot between over-the-top comedy and a loving homage to Universal horror films? Is SPACEBALLS a better film than we remember, or should we just push that reassessment aside and watch GALAXY QUEST instead? How do genre TV shows like RED DWARF and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS generate laughs while presenting often thought-provoking horror and sci-fi concepts? Where do cult classics like DR. STRANGELOVE, REPO MAN, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, and THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI fit in? And are superhero vehicles like THE BOYS, PEACEMAKER, and the DEADPOOL film series the best comedies coming out of Hollywood today? Helping us answer these important questions while tickling our ribs in her own right is a return guest who is no stranger to the world of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy humor. She is a mega-talented writer who has worked on such beloved genre comedy projects as MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 and HANGING WITH DR. Z. Please welcome back… TAMMY GOLDEN! OH, AND YES, WE DID JUST WIN THE 2026 RONDO AWARD FOR BEST PODCAST! OUR HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL THE MONSTER PARTIERS OUT THERE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS HAPPEN! NOW, LET'S START CANVASSING FOR 2027!
In this special, and slightly sillier episode of the Everything Electric podcast, Imogen Bhogal turns the tables on our founder, Robert Llewellyn. As Robert celebrates his 70th birthday, the pair look back on an extraordinary six-decade career spanning bespoke shoemaking, fringe comedy, cult sci-fi fame, and becoming one of the world's leading voices for electric vehicles and clean energy. They chat about Robert's time on Red Dwarf and the show's enduring legacy as one of the BBC's most-watched programmes (outperforming Top Gear, dare we say it?). There are also fond memories of Scrapheap Challenge, the bizarre Mojave Desert story involving a children's deckchair and a 3,500-foot flight, the hidden psychology behind the Carpool series, and of course, Robert's slightly alarming habit of writing far too many books. Enjoy! Astronomers continue to be delighted when they discover an Earth sized planet. Scientists were thus very disappointed when the red dwarf star hosting the nearest such planet, Proxima b some 4.2 light years away, turns out to have the nasty habit of emitting bursts of radiation which are likely to sterilize and/or remove the atmospheres of it's family of planets. Recently, hope of finding a nearby Earth was rekindled when scientists at the European Southern observatory in Chile discovered a small planet circling what appears to be a quiet well behaved red dwarf star 11 light years from us. Astronomers are not yet sure that this newly discovered Earth sized planet lies within it's stars habitable zone where liquid water could exist on it's surface. Jumping the gun, ET enthusiasts have beamed a friendly message in the direction of another nearby red dwarf planet system. Their target the super Earth planet, GJ 273b is located some 12.4 light years away near the bright star Sirius in the constellation of Canis Major. At this distance a civilization on GJ 273b could have already received a picture of humanity by deciphering 'I love Lucy' and other TV signals it has been picking up for 50 years or so. The next generation of very large telescopes will allow astronomers to search for the presence of oxygen and other molecules which indicate the presence of life in the atmospheres of nearby worlds. In the mean time we have more reasons to be thankful for what we have here on planet Earth. For Travelers in the Night this is Dr. Al Grauer. Simon and Rachel speak with Doug Naylor, who co-created the hit 1990s science-fiction comedy "Red Dwarf". After abandoning his university studies in psychology in Manchester, Doug spent the better part of a year visiting Manchester Central Library, reading film and TV scripts and teaching himself the mechanics of comedy writing; unbeknownst to his parents, who thought he was still pursuing his degree. After breaking into radio comedy, he became the head writer and script editor on the 1980s satirical puppet show "Spitting Image". He co-wrote the novelty hit "The Chicken Song", which topped the British charts for three weeks in 1986, and he has also published several novels. We spoke to Doug about breaking into the world of comedy, creating "Red Dwarf" and his new children's novel, "Sin Bin Island". Welcome to SHIPWRECKED & COMATOSE, an in-depth podcast dedicated to the classic BBC science-fiction sitcom, Red Dwarf. After finishing out coverage of The Promised Land, we're nearly out of 'proper' Red Dwarf content now! There's a few specials and DVD extras that we're going to look at in 2026, but we've covered all the episodes of the show now! As such, we're going to embrace our love of specials covering weird and wonderful stuff peripheral to our favourite sci-fi sitcom! Welcome to our look at Zombie Apache. Released in November 2025, this counts as 'new' stuff to look at as it features Craig Charles as a main character. Mark welcomes Carl and returning guest Rob Yeomans (from the Cinemortuary podcast) to have a chat about this low budget indie film that's a fun little B Movie but features fewer zombies and apaches than expected. Welcome to SHIPWRECKED & COMATOSE, an in-depth podcast dedicated to the classic BBC science-fiction sitcom, Red Dwarf. Rob Grant (1955–2026): Shipwrecked & Comatose Reacts to the Loss of a Red Dwarf Legend Host Kurt North is joined by Matt Laham and Colin Jackson Brown for an emergency episode of Shipwrecked & Comatose following news that Rob Grant has died aged 70. They discuss how the report was verified via the G&T news site after it briefly went down, and note Craig Charles' tribute on X calling Grant a visionary. The conversation reflects on Grant's career from Spitting Image (including the chart-topping “Chicken Song”) to co-creating Red Dwarf with Doug Naylor, and his novels, including Grant Naylor books and solo work such as Incompetence and Backwards. They also talk about the recently announced prequel novel Red Dwarf: Titan, hoping it is finished, and share personal stories about Red Dwarf's multi-generational impact and influence on their friendships and humour, before closing with condolences to Grant's family and friends. 00:00 Tribute to Rob Grant 01:20 Hosts and Guests Introduced 01:41 Breaking News Confirmation 03:51 Red Dwarf Titan Prequel 05:51 Colin on Personal Legacy 10:09 Craig Charles Tribute Quote 13:20 Matt on Red Dwarf Memories 18:15 Rob Grant Early Career 19:17 Spitting Image and Chicken Song 21:33 Other Works and Titan Hopes 22:18 Final Thanks and Sign Off Host: Kurt North Co-Host: Colin Jackson Brown & Matt Latham Editor: Kurt North BlueSky/Insta: @RedDwarfPod Our network on BlueSky: @filmstories Our network on Insta: @filmstoriesmagazineuk Learn more about your ad choices. Things have been a bit full on lately, so let's all just calm down and retreat to Paul's Book Nook, where he stores the finest charity shop tomes. There's been a bit of “behind the scenes” drama brewing with a few of the CheapShow Characters, so Eli is more than happy to wander down to his co-host's cosy chamber to read a few books by the fireside. Gannon's found a load of interesting books to show off and can't wait to do so. It starts with a bit of a Fortean trip as the cheap chaps dive into the pages of “World Famous Weird News Stories”, then they talk too long about the various Red Dwarf publications that came out of the 1990s and finally discuss if the “Roger Moore & The Crimefighters” book can be sued for false advertising! As the nights remain cold, why not wrap up warm in the CheapShow Book Nook!? "INT. Chris Barrie's Arse" 8 extra pages! 2 free postcards! Smeggier than ever before, it's the new-look Smegazine Rack! Yes, after a prolonged gap since our last sojourn to the early-to-mid 1990s, we return to discover everything's become glossier, wider and more densely packed, as we finally reach Volume 2 of the Red Dwarf Smegazine. There is much to discuss, not least the most unfortunate cover line of all time, but also a comic strip with remarkable parallels to a much later TV story, the latest news on just how messy the production of Series VI was, the evils of red chairs, the soap opera parody that refuses to die and the crossover event of the century. Plus, we give a very special welcome to a new Smegazine writer, who would go on to have a very, ahem, "interesting" career.Show notes The magazine, via archive.org or Stasis Leak, whatever's your poison It was actually us that tweeted a list of all the times the crew could have got back to Earth, although Curtis Threadgold did indeed come up with a number of other suggestions. We haven't managed to dig up any of Chris Barrie's Jackanory episodes, but we have figured out the TX dates: Jack Crater, 1st-3rd March 1993; The Fox and the Chicken, 25th February 1994; The Greatest, 9th March 1994 Ace Rimmer Worlds Tour Smegazine signing event at Forbidden Planet, May 1993 What Stanley Didn't Say, by Anthony Frewin
RHLSTP Book Club #166 - Sin Bin Island - Rich meets Red Dwarf co-creator and writer for A Kick Up The Eighties, Doug Naylor to talk about his thrilling and funny new book for kids, Sinbin Island. They chat about how Doug got started in comedy, why he gave us the Chicken Song, how Galton and Simpson inspired the writing of Red Dwarf, the difficulty of getting a sci-fi sitcom off the ground and how losing a leg at the age of 7 led to a correspondence with Douglas Bader. They then talk about what inspired Sinbin Island and how it started off about being about aliens, why so many kids books revolve around orphans, the decision to make the story reassuringly old-fashioned and yet still funny and relevant, whether the story is deliberately written to be unfilmable (at least without a huge budget) and if it was inspired by Doug's own experiences at boarding school. Plus the intriguing Russian nesting dolls and what they say about free will or time travel, but let's not give too much away.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/sin-bin-island-a-financial-times-children-s-book-of-the-year-from-red-dwarf-co-creator-doug-naylor-doug-naylor/3ad56d65845f8273SUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. "Birds don't have balls" We may not be fast, but we get there in the end. Just shy of a year later, our voyage of Re-Disc-overy continues as we reach the mammoth collection that is the Series VIII DVD. And there is much to discuss, such as the inter-cast beef evident in the commentary track, the brilliance of the guest stars' contributions to the documentary, a reappraisal of Chris Veale's work on the series, the beginnings of the show's web presence, the moment that secured this fledgling fansite's future, and buffet car food. Oh, and there's always time to discuss the merits of the series itself, because we haven't done that enough over the last twenty-six years. All this, plus not one but two commentaries, on the Children In Need sketch and the collection of PBS idents. You lucky people.Show notes Contemporary reviews from Cappsy and John Hoare What's Funny About..?, the radio equivalent of Comedy Connections Bill Pearson's Christmas special script, via Gazpacho Soup Whatever You Want, and its Pearson-built Starbug Terry Wogan's penis Swirly Thing Alert and Smegheads in Seattle Back In The Red Xtended - commentary and Xtended Revisited
Doug Naylor: How Red Dwarf Made TV Better Than LifeGet ready for a sci-fi-soaked comedy ride as Steve Otis Gunn chats with writer and co-creator of Red Dwarf, Doug Naylor. From the early days of radio comedy and Spitting Image to building one of Britain's most enduring cult TV shows, Doug brings thoughtful, funny stories from a lifetime in entertainment. They explore Doug's path through sketch shows, number one singles, and the moment Red Dwarf finally became the show he'd imagined. Doug spills the beans on why the American remake went sideways, and how he'll never get used to the strange feeling of meeting fans who say the show helped them through tough times. They also touch on the big one: the ambitious new Red Dwarf project that was suddenly cancelled — and what Doug plans to do with it next.

LOOK OUT! It's only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with a hero of UK comic writing and creator of universes DOUG NAYLOR! Doug is a hugely important piece of the UK's comic series puzzle, having co-created the iconic sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf which was a mainstay of primetime viewing. It also made superstars of the cast who were all awesome in their own right. Doug's been involved in a lot of subsequent (and preceding) projects of course, including his book 'Sinbin Island' (aimed at the child readers among us). This is a lovely one with Brett and Doug, covering all sorts including the generation of new material so often, being an author, a potential "anti-dying on stage device" which can be applied to life itself, hidden and visible romance in Red Dwarf, his own personal 'bit of a nuisance' and how wearing gloves can be an early signifier of future writing adventures. All will be revealed. Enjoy! Video and extra audio available on Brett's Patreon! Silvana, Eric and Tegan watch the original 1979 "Alien." It becomes clear very quickly that Red Dwarf is a spoof of Alien. Alien clearly has had such a huge impact on the genre overall and the hosts felt watching it was worthwhile. This movie also really exhibits the differences between the expectations of 20th century viewers versus 21st century viewers. The hosts share fun facts about the movie's filming and production, being an actor on this set sounds like it would have been a nightmare! Which really influenced the feeling of dread and tension in the film. We open with a sobering follow-up: the future is less about AI toast (though Red Dwarf predicted it) and more about a soul-stripping "infrastructure of meaningless" after an AWS outage proved how fragile the internet is. Corporate overlords, like Elon Musk, are taking note: he finally addressed Starlink's use by Asian scam syndicates, but his attention is mostly on superintelligence, which Wozniak, Prince Harry, and 800 others want banned. Meanwhile, Meta, despite pouring $27 billion into data centers, suddenly cut 600 AI jobs, and Amazon is preparing to automate a half-million warehouse positions, offering drivers AR spy glasses and suggesting a new "Help Me Decide" AI tool to automate the exhausting micro-decision of which air fryer to buy. This dystopian fever dream peaked when Suzanne Somers' widower revealed he built a full-on robotic AI twin of the late actress. Predictably, Tesla stock tumbled, and the crypto grift continued with the pardoning of Binance founder Zhao, leaving SBF to ponder his failed check-bounce in jail.Speaking of soul-crushing, Disney's latest nostalgia raid, Tron: Ares, tanked harder than anticipated, proving not every Gen-X intellectual property is a worthy cash cow. But fear not, there's still great TV to be had: we recommend the clever dramas Slow Horses and The Diplomat Season 3, the high-stakes culinary nightmare Knives Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars, and the surprisingly excellent Gen V (which you must watch before the next season of The Boys). We also got our fix with the Pluribus trailer, Bullet Train, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and the deliciously low-stakes reality shows Come Dine With Me, Hotel Costiera, and The Celebrity Traitors UK/Canada. Sadly, we must mourn the end of Food Network's The Kitchen. Yet, no matter how good the show, you still have to deal with Ticketmaster, which is still lying about "fighting bots" while cornering the secondary market. In the world of Apps & Doodads, OpenAI dropped its "Anti-Web" browser, ChatGPT Atlas (a data mule in disguise), and a new app now fakes your vacation photos (perfect for burned-out users). X is poised to sell "rare" usernames for millions (with a terrible subscription catch), while some clever hacker figured out a $60 mod to disable the privacy light on Meta's Ray-Ban spy glasses. Fellow podcast host Dave Bittner joined us to agree that the new Hall of Presidents format is better without the political posturing and confirmed the joy of old-school, purple-ink-smelling Spirit Duplicators (and we checked out a Star Wars fan film trailer for the AT THE LIBRARY section). The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkPhmtJRvsM From Jan 24, 2019. As astronomers find more and more planets around other stars, the big question we want to know is: are they habitable, could there be life there? The vast majority of stars in the Milky Way are red dwarf stars, and most of the planets in habitable zones have been found orbiting these cooler, less massive stars. What are the chances that life could get going on these worlds? We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.
