This month's guest William Smith founded the long-running website gaylifeafter40.com and several related groups on Facebook. We go beyond his personal coming out story as he shares the lessons he has learned from helping other gay men come out "later in life." Although his work focuses on gay men, these lessons can remind us all of the power of helping others. In this episode of Graying Rainbows I talk with Cassandra Contave and Aisha Bonner-Cozad, two researchers who are spearheading research into LGBT+ aging at the AARP. This includes their landmark Maintaining Dignity Study, which highlighted some of the unique challenges facing LGBT+ elders. Besides social isolation many fear discrimination in housing and healthcare. Since the AARP is the largest advocacy group for American Elders their role in advocating for LGBT+ elders is essential. In today's episode, host Kristin Kalbli interviews Dr. Loren A. Olson, who came out in his 40’s after a 20 year marriage to his wife. Dr. Olson is currently married to his partner of thirty years, and lives in Iowa. His career and research has focused on working with and supporting other gay men and fathers exiting Mixed Orientation Marriages. Recently, he has begun to reach across the divide and connect with straight spouses with empathy and understanding. In Loren’s own words on reconciliation with his wife: “We decided that we still loved each other, although not in the ways we thought we would. It didn’t come easy, it didn’t come quickly. We chose not to focus on the things we did wrong to each other. We realized we didn’t have to have this pain in our future, in our relationship. It’s not the future that any of us wanted, it’s not the way our lives were laid out for us, but it was a best alternative life, and it’s been very satisfying.”
Two questions that always haunt those of us who come out of the closet later in life are, “How did you not know you were gay?” and “Wasn’t your marriage just sham to protect yourself at your spouse’s expense?” For years and years those questions haunted me and I thought I was the only one…

What would you do if you realized that your own most fundamental assumptions about yourself were wrong? How would you reinvent yourself in your forties if you began to suspect that much of your life had been built on a lie – or at least a critical misperception? These are the questions that Dr. Loren A. Olson, a prominent Midwestern psychiatrist, faced when he finally confronted the fact that despite almost two decades of marriage to a loving and emotionally compatible woman, he was sexually and romantically attracted to men. Dr. Olson is author of Finally Out - Letting Go of Living Straight and provides insight and wisdom to others experiencing the same situation. Whether it be a husband or wife that finds themselves questioning their own sexuality or a family member or children dealing with accepting their new reality. Dr. Olson help us understand the journey not just from someone who has lived it, but also as a professional psychiatrist.
“Coming out” is a term usually applied to gay people about the process of coming to terms with their sexual identity, but it could be applied to anyone growing into their own authenticity.
