Senator Hansen is an engineer by training and experience. Growing up in Goodland, Kansas, Hansen always looked up to the regional capital of Denver, and frequently visited.   Elected to represent SD21 (central and east Denver), Hansen is a legislative leader who wants to now turn his attention to solving Denver's problems. Hansen is a father of two boys who is proud of his attorney wife. Learn also about Hansen's father, a necktie-wearing teacher, and his mother, a nurse.    Hansen gets passionate about climate change and electric heat pump technology that could revolutionize Denver's buildings. Dr. Hansen also knows budgets, having served as the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Vice Chair of the Joint Budget Committee.   So is Hansen's good humor as he talks about the neckties he and his father have long favored. The Colorado Senate's strict necktie rule is no problem for this mayoral candidate who wore a solid red tie to Thursday's first Denver mayoral debate held at Regis College.   The candidate discusses his first priority commitment to Denver public safety. Denver's ongoing crime and vehicular collision problems are unacceptable. Hansen claims he's the infrastructure knowledgeable mayoral candidate Denver needs and his decision making skills are suited to the job.   Sam Kaufman's job was to sell men neckties and it lasted many decades. As son of late great Fred Kaufman and proprietor of this region's preeminent big and tall men's clothing store, Sam is an expert at men's fashion. He's also sold hundreds of thousands of extra long ties.   Listen to the great yarns spun by this master clothier who spent decades also selling suits and shoes and other apparel at Kaufman's Big and Tall Store in Englewood. The location at Hampden and Broadway was chosen after Fred Kaufman turned down offers to locate at Cinderella City.   Great athletes galore were among the Kaufman patrons. Listen for the invited name dropping including Julius Erving and Broncos' greats Paul Smith and Randy Gradishar.     What are neckties all about? Personal expression and a show of respect. Are neckties going extinct? Perhaps. One necktie killer was Raymond Burr who went through them like dishrags as he sweated out playing Perry Mason in the Denver courthouse. Kaufman's Burr necktie story is a classic.   Sam Kaufman is a brilliant storyteller who loved his famous father who helped bring pro basketball to Denver. Byron Beck is a big Kaufman's fan and vice versa. These old Denver stories are classics.   For lawyers, a good necktie can be his moneymaker. Shake your Moneymaker is the cover song sung by show Troubadour Dave Gunders who pays tribute to Elmore James and neckties he too has known. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08U7tcjKWFM   As a special feature, Troubadour Dave Gunders give their reviews of the controversial number one movie on Netflix, You People. Many of us as gay men grew up always doing what was expected of us, trying to fit in, compartmentalizing our lives and never letting anyone see the side of us that unacceptable. We end up feeling isolated and alone, but we do what we do to be successful by every other external measure until the pain becomes to great. In his new book, No More Neckties: A Memoir in Essays, Dr. Loren A. Olsen, MD, flings open the doors and reveals he wasn't always a good boy. While not always noble and admirable, his stories show humanness to which everyone can relate: Love and heartbreak Cheating and forgiveness Suicide and secrets Men's body image and sexuality Being old and gay In this book, Olson sends readers a message of hope and compassion, letting them know they are not alone in dealing with the hard stuff in their lives. Today he joins us to explore why it's time to ditch the neckties of living a joyless life. A political commentator says change is long overdue, when it comes to the rules around wearing ties in Parliament.Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi was kicked out of the House yesterday for wearing a hei-tiki around his neck instead of a tie.Talks are now underway to change the rules. But commentator Claire Robinson told Kate Hawkesby if Parliament wants to reflect New Zealand society, it should reconsider whether a neck-tie is even needed in the first place."The rules around what goes on in the House change all the time, and change with the times."It's the time to really be looking at that dress standard."She says that white men, who are more likely to wear a tie, are in the minority - and there are other forms of expression to show importance. "It's that the most diverse parliament ever actually became reflective of that diversity."Robinson says that they don't know how many people responded to Speaker Trevor Mallard's call for feedback on the issue. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she's relaxed about the wearing of ties, but won't waste time getting involved in the debate.LISTEN ABOVE

The Shulhan Aruch rules that it is prohibited to tie a permanent knot on Shabbat that will last for more than seven days, even if it is a simple, nonprofessional knot. Any simple knot that will not last seven days is permitted. One common example, which people are not aware of, is tying garbage bags on Shabbat. The simple double knot used to tie them will remain forever. Nobody ever intends to untie it, and therefore it is prohibited. Another example is tying a necktie on Shabbat with intent to leave the knot in place, even after loosening it and removing it. If it would remain for more than a week, it is prohibited to tie it on Shabbat. There is a scholarly inquiry regarding a case in which a person tied a necktie on Shabbat with intent of untying it on the same day, which is clearly permitted. What is the Halacha if, during the course of Shabbat, he changed his mind and decided to leave the knot of the necktie in place? Does his new intent, after the fact, retroactively render his act of tying a forbidden Melacha? Hacham Yishak Beracha wrote a length discourse on this subject, expounding both sides of the question. His conclusion is to be strict. Therefore, one should make sure to untie a necktie tied on Shabbat within seven days.SUMMARYIt is prohibited to tie a double knot in garbage bags on Shabbat. While it is permitted to tie a necktie on Shabbat, one must insure that he unties it within seven days.

This episode is a bit different. It's an interview with a startup founder. Trajan sits down with Peter Walkins, founder of Setter Neckties to discuss how he started a high-end tie company after living in Italy and seeing how popular expensive, high-quality ties are made. At the time he started his company, he was working in the White House during the second Bush administration. He has since sold ties to presidents and CEOs. His ties can be found at https://www.setteneckwear.com/. For more startup articles go to: InvincibleRobots.com

One of my favorite things about doing this podcast is looking at things in everyday life and wondering if they still have the same purpose they did when they were invented. This week's subject is a bit ambiguous. It's most notably known for bringing a pop of color and whimsy to an otherwise drab suit, but aside from that, it's more seen as form over function. Yet it's so ubiquitous and has been around for hundreds of years, showing no signs of going out of fashion, despite many men counting down the minutes until they can loosen theirs every day. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind the Necktie. Find out more about The Story Behind Book! Check out Emily's other podcast, Hate to Weight!
