Hosted by Matthijs Wouter Knol, this episode spotlights an important figure in the history of the EFM through a personal conversation and a journey through time. This special episode revolves around the former EFM director Beki Probst through a conversation that took place during the Cannes Film Festival between her and Matthijs Wouter Knol, who himself has been in the seat as director of the EFM as a successor. Beki depicts her journey through the film industry with anecdotes from her life in the film industry, from her starting out as a young journalist traveling to Cannes, to suddenly finding herself in Berlin. She shares stories of people she crossed paths with along the way, how the Berlinale took place right after the fall of the wall and draws a picture of the future industry through her own expectations and lived experiences. This all adds to the portrayal of the woman who came to found the European Film Market as we know it today. Beki Probst is considered the grande dame of the film world. Under her direction, the European Film Market has developed into one of the largest and most important trade fairs for cinema on the international scene. Beki Probst was born in Istanbul, where she first worked as a journalist after completing her studies in law and journalism. In 1960, Probst moved to Switzerland, where she became the general manager of the Probst-Kinobetriebe, known today as Quinnie Cinemas. From 1981 to 1988, Beki Probst served as the Berlin International Film Festival's official delegate for Turkey and Greece. Up until 1995, she also served as a member of the selection committee for Locarno International Film Festival. From 1988 to 2014, Beki Probst was the director of the Berlinale's European Film Market – Probst rebranded the former “film fair” as the European Film Market and subsequently transformed the event into one of the most significant industry meet-ups for the international film business. In addition, from 1988 to 1996 Beki Probst was artistic director of the Geneva-based festival “Stars de Démain”. She has served as a jury member on multiple occasions at international film festivals, including appearances in Toronto, Jerusalem and San Sebastián. In 1992 Beki Probst was decorated as “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Ministry of Culture, was honoured with the Berlinale Camera in 2018 and in 2019 with the Honorary Award of the Swiss Film Award. In 2024 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstkreuz am Bande der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Since 2021, Dutch-born Matthijs Wouter Knol is the CEO and Director of the European Film Academy. Before reading and graduating with an MA in Contemporary History at Leiden University and the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, he worked as a magazine editor and journalist. From 2001 onwards, he worked in Amsterdam as creative and associate producer on 30 award-winning documentary films, with renowned directors such as Heddy Honigmann, Maria Ramos, and Mani Kaul. For ARTE, he co-produced a digital edition of 40 re-mastered works of Dutch documentarian Johan van der Keuken, which was awarded the Prix Cahiers du Cinéma (2006). After a short stint at IDFA (2007-2008), he formed for 12 years part of the senior Berlinale team, first as Head of Programming of Berlinale Talents (2008-2014), then as Director of the European Film Market (2014-2020). Apart from launching several new training and industry platforms over the course of his career, Matthijs is an advocate for more Diversity and Inclusion. He initiated D&I schemes at both EFM and the European Film Academy, and was one of the founders of the Anti-Racist Taskforce for European Film (ARTEF). He teaches and coaches at various film schools and is a regular moderator and speaker at international film industry events. Matthijs has been part of the main jury at the festivals of Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, Istanbul and Locarno. The Berlinale's European Film Market is the first international film market of the year, where the film industry starts its business. Industry Insights - The EFM Podcast puts a spotlight on highly topical and trendsetting industry issues, thereby creating a compass for the forthcoming film year. In this episode, I opened up about my childhood in El Salvador during the Civil War, which left an indelible mark on my psyche. I also shared my journey of embracing the Jewish faith and culture through my marriage and my deep concern for the current events unfolding in Israel. Our guests, Reina and Simon, brought their unique perspectives to the table. Reina shared her personal experience of living through a traumatic event in Israel and how it affected her mental health. Simon, an Orthodox and pro-Zionist Jew, provided a brief history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how it deeply affected him and his family. Here are some key takeaways:The Lasting Impact of Childhood Experiences: My childhood experiences during the civil war in El Salvador have shaped my views, values, and trauma. It's a reminder of how early experiences can leave a lasting impact on our mental health. The Power of Empathy: We emphasized the importance of holding space for each other and empathizing with others' experiences. It's crucial to have open conversations and understanding rather than canceling people with different perspectives. The Ongoing Conflict in Israel: We discussed the current events in Israel, not to be political, but to create an open and honest conversation and to show respect for one another. We highlighted the ongoing atrocities and human rights violations happening today. The Importance of Awareness: Reina highlighted the power of sharing images and videos to expose the destruction happening in Israel. These visuals should serve as a reminder of the lives lost and the importance of taking action to minimize the suffering.Protecting Children on Social Media: We discussed the importance of curating and protecting children's content on social media platforms. Open conversations about important topics are crucial.I thank Reina and Simon for their invaluable contributions to this discussion. Their experiences and insights have enriched our understanding of these complex issues.I encourage you to listen to this episode and gain knowledge, understanding, and empathy from our discussion. Remember, the more we speak up and speak out, the better our collective living environment will be.Today's show aims to create a meaningful, respectful dialogue on the events of our world. To show support for ALL who are hurting. I hope you found some level of information, education, and perhaps inspiration to help. Be THE CHANGE peace can begin with us The purpose of this episode was to provide context on what some of our friends may be experiencing. However, WAR sucks. No one is a winner. Lives are being lost, and many of these are innocent children's lives. Like me, many of the children affected will live forever with the current ramifications. As of the release of this recording, Sunday 10/15/23 over 1300 Jewish people have been killed since October 7th. Josh Feldstein Verve Jazz Ensemble leader Josh Feldstein has been a jazz drummer for more than 30 years. A native New Yorker who grew up on the NYC jazz scene, Josh formed the VJE in 2006 as a local performing group in the Danbury, CT area. The straight-ahead jazz unit – which paid homage to the legendary music of the famed Verve record label – soon took off with a large local following. After many years, at the prompting of its fans, Josh agreed to record the VJE's first album, aptly titled “It's About Time,” which unexpectedly hit #5 on the national JazzWeek radio chart in 2013. Fans and radio alike asked for more, and so, as an encore, Josh guided the band through the recording of its second album, “East End Sojourn” (2014) with guest guitarist Peter Bernstein joining the studio date. To the band's surprise, this album also achieved significant status with jazz radio, reaching #8 on the national JazzWeek chart and propelling the VJE to its second consecutive top 10 radio album. From there, Josh happily embraced the band's emerging studio recording pathway, initiating the group's third and fourth albums, “Perimeter” (2016) and “Swing-A-Nova” (2017), which resulted in another top 10 JazzWeek chart performance as well as a top 100 Album of the year placement. Looking to advance the band's sound and approach, in 2018 Josh expanded the VJE from its original 5 pieces — headed up by Jon Blanck on tenor and Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet — to 7 instruments, adding Alexa Tarantino on alto / flute and Willie Applewhite on trombone, which served to round out the rhythm section of Steve Einerson on piano and Elias Bailey on bass. Its septet album "Connect The Dots” proved to be a turning point for the VJE, the album hitting #1 on the JazzWeek chart in September 2018 for two consecutive weeks, and staying in the JazzWeek top 10 nearly 3 months. "Night Mode" (2019) expanded the VJE's wide US and European footprint further, again placing top 10 on the JazzWeek charts to much critical acclaim. And in January 2021, Josh and the VJE released its latest offering, “The VJE: Very Live!” — the Verve Jazz Ensemble's first live album, recorded at a benefit concert in Hadley, MA just prior to the pandemic lockdown. As VJE leader, drummer and occasional writer and arranger, Josh selects the band's music. He works closely with Jon Blanck, Tatum Greenblatt and other VJE musicians to craft the group's broad portfolio of arrangements, and oversees the band's steady recording and production schedule. A jazz musician through and through, Josh has studied extensively with drumming legends John Riley and Joe Morello. Josh was born in Manhattan and received his degree from Queens College, City University of New York. In addition to working on the VJE's next recording already, Josh is also diligently pursuing new musical and percussive challenges on his never-ending road to better understanding and performing the musical art form he loves called Jazz.

It's another year around the sun…My Birthday month has arrived and I decided to sit down with my producer Kyle Ferreira to discuss all the things October has to teach us! Along with the theme of Birthdays, and with Halloween quickly approaching, Kyle and I dive into what it means to “Wear a Mask” as a cover for what we may be feeling. It's also National Bullying Prevention Month, and we make room to break down the terrible situation that happened in LA earlier this month, with an elected official making racist remarks about a transracially adopted child.

This conversation is like a family reunion, and you are invited! They start off with a fun digression into the world of summer living, apologetics and personal passions, and then also raising kids, laundry lists and more. Then Stephanie gets pretty vulnerable and transparent as Ros asks her all the questions on her mind. A smattering: What are the concerns you see in the coming year for our world? How are you getting ready? And what is your advice for us? How are you doing personally? Give us an update on you and your family. For those of our listeners who are relatively new to Gospel Spice, can you give us your backstory from atheism to faith? And how did you end up in the US anyway? What is your heart for Gospel Spice this year? Stephanie and Ros end with an invitation to YOU our beloved audience, to connect with us because, as Stephanie says, it makes her day! We invite you to enjoy a Christ-centered summer by experiencing Jesus through the lens of the body of Christ. We bring you a diversity of viewpoints on several issues, and invite you to discover Jesus through their own journey with Him. Our Summer series invite you to ponder important topics for daily living. Stephanie and her occasional guests tell us about the importance of our definition of success, the key elements of leadership roles, the traps of comparison, the importance of theology, and much more! These stand-along episodes are meant to encourage you and challenge you to experience deeper fruitfulness in your various roles and ministries, in all the relationships and areas of your life. The topics we discuss are eternal and apply to both genders, across time and space and culture and age. Trigger Warning: In this episode we talk about intimate partner violence. If you need help or to talk to someone you can call or chat the National Domestic Violence Hotline at https://www.thehotline.org/ 1-800-799-SAFE or the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) at https://www.rainn.org/ 1-800-656-HOPE. Intimate partner violence (IPV), or abuse or aggression in intimate or romantic relationships, takes many forms, including physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, financial violence, and psychological aggression. Monica Edwards, Federal Policy Manager at Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity (URGE), talks to us about the ways in which IPV and reproductive health, rights, and justice intersect, and the communities most impacted by IPV. SisterSong's definition of reproductive justice is “human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.” Forms of IPV that are directly connected to reproductive health and reproductive justice include tampering with contraception, contraceptive coercion, and “stealthing,” (the removal of a condom during sexual intercourse without a partner's consent), among other forms. Those seeking abortion care may be unable to do so because they are in an IPV situation, and research from the Turnaway Study has shown that those who cannot access an abortion are more likely to stay with abusive partners. Those who are experiencing violence—intimate partner violence, police violence, violence from the state, etc.—are not living in safe and sustainable communities, and therefore cannot fulfill their reproductive justice. It is important to note that IPV directly impacts different communities in different ways. A recent study has found that homicide is the leading cause of maternal mortality for pregnant people in the United States. Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) experience IPV disproportionately. Young people—whether teens or young adults—can experience IPV or what's known as “teen dating violence,” and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that 1 in 12 teens experience dating violence and 1 in 12 teens experienced sexual dating violence. How do we address these issues that demand immediate attention? Having open, honest, and intersectional conversations that uplift and center the experiences of communities that are consistently oppressed. This rule is as true for intimate partner violence as it is for reproductive health and abortion and contraception access. Moving our bodies. Dealing with anxiety. Finding what inspires us. Cultivating and maintaining family relationships. Tending to our mental health. These are among the topics Heather and her 21-year-old daughter Emma touch on during this decidedly more personal episode. While Heather has had a wide range of discussions with guests over the past 6 years, many of which took us into the minds and hearts of athletes, race directors, and healthy lifestyle experts, Heather and Emma share personal stories and dive deeper into areas of particular interest to them — and to longtime listeners who have shared with Heather over the years that the episodes that explore these kinds of topics and how others lean into movement to help them navigate life are often the most powerful. Like many businesses and organizations in the past year and half of the pandemic, Michigan Runner Girl was forced to switch gears (no in-person events for awhile meant no race expos or women's retreats) and reimagine what this community could look like. While we're all tentatively returning to things we took part in pre-COVID, life of course has forever changed in numerous ways for all of us. What does this mean for MRG? Heather is still thinking this through, though she is excited to keep moving forward and see what unfolds — with the podcast and with the community. What won't ever change: her hope to keep the conversation going around good health and well-being, staying true to ourselves, running (and all other movement that keeps us looking forward and feeling great), and continually striving to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be. We want to hear from YOU! Let us know what you think of this episode and what you'd like to hear more of on the Michigan Runner Girl Show as we move forward. Rabbi Cantor Chorny sits down with Chancellor Shuly Rubin Schwartz of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America to explore life in that flagship institution and beyond, as it swirls in the wake of pandemic. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, Irving Lehrman Research Professor of American Jewish History, a groundbreaking scholar of American Jewish history, and a visionary institutional leader, is the eighth chancellor of The Jewish Theological Seminary. She is the first woman to serve in this role since JTS was founded in 1886. Chancellor Schwartz is devoted to building on JTS's unique strengths as a Jewish institution of higher learning that trains future leaders through deep study—with both head and heart—of Jewish texts, ideas, and history. In JTS's thriving community, students develop the creative ability to imbue others with the intellectual, cultural, and religious sustenance that our tradition offers, and they enrich every community of which they are a part. Previously, Dr. Schwartz played a central role in shaping and strengthening JTS's academic programs, while teaching and mentoring countless students. From 1993 to 2018, she served as dean of the Albert A. List College of Jewish Studies, JTS's undergraduate dual-degree program with Columbia University and Barnard College. In 2010, she was also named dean of the Gershon Kekst Graduate School. In 2018, she assumed the provostship, while continuing as dean of the Kekst School. Chancellor Schwartz was one of the first women on the JTS faculty and played an instrumental role in introducing Jewish gender studies into the curriculum. As a scholar, she brings to light previously overlooked contributions of women to Jewish life and culture over the centuries and continually expands our understanding of American Judaism. Among her publications is the award-winning book, The Rabbi's Wife, a penetrating examination of the role of rabbis' wives in the development of American Jewish life.

This is a bit of a different kind of podcast for me. It's a very honest and personal talk with a friend about Asian hate in America, and really about all forms of racial hatred. Rachel Wong and I are friends through writing workshops and classes. We've talked recently about the rise of anti Asian violence in the country. I wanted to talk to Rachel about her up close experiences in NYC, what has changed in the last few years and through the pandemic, what's basically the same and her thoughts about what we can do about it. I also want to ask her about her book, since it focuses on Anti-Asian hate. Rachel Wong became a writer at 14 when she sold her first non-fiction short story to a magazine. She has worked for tech startups, agencies, even an international law firm. In her free time, she helps run monthly board game socials and collects rare plants. She has two degrees in Creative Writing (BA + MFA) and her current (and longstanding) project is a speculative fiction YA novel called Catalyst. She lives in New York City. I asked Rachel what she recommends for action to combat Asian hate and she suggests the following: Biden signed AAPI protections into law but we need more action on a state level. Please petition your local leaders to sign protections for these increased race-based hate crimes. California and New York, big cities in particular, have a spike in these crimes. There are a few funds that I can recommend: - Hate Is A Virus commUNITY Action fund - #StopAsianHate: Support AAF (Asian American Federation) gofundme campaign - AAPI Community Fund If you don't have money to spare but have time, volunteer groups like Compassion in Oakland and “Community Angels” in NYC chinatown chaperone Asian elders who go out on errands, so they won't be alone For education and resources.: https://www.laaunch.org/ https://hateisavirus.org/ https://www.sendchinatownlove.com/ (great foundation that also does “gift a meal” funds for the needy) https://www.taaf.org/ An op-ed about Asian-Black Solidarity: https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/19/opinions/black-asian-american-solidarity-jones/index.html More of “what we can do:” https://www.instagram.com/evachen212/guide/ways-to-help/17906750905739799/?utm_medium=copy_link --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judy-mandel/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judy-mandel/support

Join Andrew and esteemed researcher Stephen LaBerge in a rare live interview conducted at the Sedona lucid dreaming retreat, October 2019. This is an unusual interview because Stephen seldom does interviews; it was conducted in front of 50 wonderful participants; and the conversation has a warm-up, or preview. Andrew had prepared a set of questions for Stephen (submitted to Stephen the evening before) that dealt mostly with the science of lucid dreaming. But all those questions fell away as Dr. LaBerge gave his last brief talk at the event, part of which is now included as the prelude to the interview. In other words, Stephen's concluding comments at the retreat changed the tenor of the originally designed interview, which now became entirely spontaneous and more personal. Andrew realized the direction was being changed as he sat on stage with Stephen, and started recording Stephen's talk before the interview formally began. The recording was done on a smart phone, so pardon the quality. The recording begins with Stephen addressing (as part of his talk) the question: Who am I? And who are the “others” in your dreams? This leads to a look at dream ethics, and the question: How do identity and lucidity fit together? The interview formally begins with a Big Question about mind and the universe, and Stephen harnesses the principle of complimentarity from physics to address it. “There is room for several views or maps.” Even the way a question is posed sends the mind in a particular direction. In a disarming statement from a scientist, Dr. LaBerge says that “All knowledge doesn't just come from experiments,” and acknowledges the power of an open question. The conversation then turns to the subtle body -- “Is it just the subjective experience of the autonomic nervous system?” -- and a look at the classic “mind-body” problem. Stephen then shares personal accounts of how his science has changed him (can science be a spiritual path?). The conversation closes with a look at lucid dreaming and its place in evolution, and the promise and peril of the internet: Does the web disseminate knowledge or “noise,” the growth of knowledge or ignorance? In this interview you will see why LaBerge is the father of lucid dreaming in the West, and a unique scientist willing to embrace the wisdom of the East.--Stephen LaBerge received his PhD in psychophysiology in 1980 from Stanford University where he studied consciousness, dreaming and waking for 25 years. He has taught classes on sleep and dreaming, psychobiology, and altered states of consciousness at Stanford, and San Francisco State University. In addition to numerous scientific articles on lucid dreaming, he has published many books on the topic, including the classics “Lucid Dreaming” and “Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming,” which have been published into eighteen languages. Widely regarded as the father of lucid dreaming in the West, LaBerge continues his research as an independent scholar and scientist.
