This includes their landmark Maintaining Dignity Study, which highlighted some of the unique challenges facing LGBT+ elders. When I first came at at age 60, one of the first books I read was Loren Olson's book Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight. It is a unique combination of personal memoir and guide for men who are coming out later in life. Dr. Olson has been a psychiatrist for over 40 years so he brings a valuable perspective to the conversation. In today's episode, host Kristin Kalbli interviews Dr. Loren A. Olson, who came out in his 40’s after a 20 year marriage to his wife. Dr. Olson is currently married to his partner of thirty years, and lives in Iowa. His career and research has focused on working with and supporting other gay men and fathers exiting Mixed Orientation Marriages. Recently, he has begun to reach across the divide and connect with straight spouses with empathy and understanding. In Loren’s own words on reconciliation with his wife: “We decided that we still loved each other, although not in the ways we thought we would. It didn’t come easy, it didn’t come quickly. We chose not to focus on the things we did wrong to each other. We realized we didn’t have to have this pain in our future, in our relationship. It’s not the future that any of us wanted, it’s not the way our lives were laid out for us, but it was a best alternative life, and it’s been very satisfying.”

In this episode, Al interviews Dr. Loren Olson, a psychiatrist and published author (recorded 2-13-18). Dr. Olson shares about his own challenges of depression and the depression that ran in his family. This included his grandfather, who tragically took his own life while living with Dr. Olson when Dr. Olson was only about six years old. Dr. Olson also speaks of the challenges of making the difficult choice of leaving his wife and kids at age forty to declare that he was gay. Dr. Olson is the author of Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight.
