On this episode, we look back on two tragic murder-suicides in the U.S. that took place within two days of each other over Mother's Day weekend. But these weren't your run-of-the-mill murder-suicides — these were familicides. And in both instances, it was the father who took the lives of the mother and the children. Our first case takes us to the small town of Cozad, Nebraska, as we look at the tragic deaths of Bailey Koch and her family. In our second case, we head to Kalispell, Montana, where we examine the gruesome demise of Katie Hartley and her children. These days it's easy to see life the way we want to. We can filter our images, pick the news we want to hear, and listen only to the viewpoints that agree with us. When we do that, we start to distort our view of the world. The same thing can happen to our view of God. We reshape our perception of Him into what we want to believe, or what we want to think about others. On the morning of March 10, 1997, Leah Rowlands, a 41-year-old mother of two, worked at the Amoco gas station just off Interstate 80 in Cozad, Nebraska. Before the afternoon arrived, Leah was found shot to death behind the counter. When police reviewed the Amoco's surveillance footage, they saw that just after 10:30am, a white, barefoot man robbed Leah. After she gave him $150, he ordered her to lie down behind the counter. He then pulled out a gun, leaned over the counter, and shot her three times. After shooting Leah, the killer went back to his car and drove away, never to be seen again. It's been nearly 27 years since Leah was killed, and investigators are still searching for the person responsible… On March 10, 1997, Leah Rowlands was working at the Amoco gas station off Interstate 80 in Cozad, Nebraska. Yemeni-Americans are a growing segment of the population in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Kipp Cozad, a Middle East scholar and former Peace Corps Volunteer in Yemen will discuss what makes Yemenis unique among the Arab population using Yemen's vast history to reveal an identity that is both highly cosmopolitan and, at the same time, static and isolated. These qualities present a fascinating culture that few get a chance to experience. Finally, Cozad will place Yemeni mobility in historical context, explain how Yemenis ended up in America, and how the current conflict in the Arab nation has interrupted modern patterns of movement. We encourage Yemeni-Americans to attend to gain a better understanding of their rich history and to ask Cozad about his experiences in Yemen. We invite all to attend to learn about Yemen and to engage in the discussion at lecture's end.

We all know it is a possibility but we never want to believe it could happen to us. The layoff, the downsizing, the rift, the realignment, the reduction in staff - let's just call it what it is - being fired. It never feels good and most of us are not prepared. That is why I brought Kelsea Cozad back onto the show to talk about this very thing. She had an excited new job that she was looking to do amazing things with. She is young, ambitious, outgoing and dedicated to her craft. She was told she was safe but quickly learned she was not. In this episode, she opens up about the ups and downs of picking herself up and searching for a career she would love. It was truly an amazing discussion and I am so glad she was willing to share how she got through such a tough time in her professional career and a personal life. Welcome to this week's episode and special guest, Kelsea Cozad. Kelsea is a mom, a wife, a professional marketer, works with a non-profit organization, enjoy spending time singing with her husband and loves a summer shandy on the porch. Although Kelsea admits to being an average Ohio girl, she is far from average! Kelsea is a breath of fresh air to talk to and inspiring to say the least. We spend a bulk of our conversation learning about the non-profit she works with called “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” where they essentially fundraise money to buy the tools and transport needed to build and provide beds to those without. Since full-time lecturers at Howard University originally voted to unionize, they have spent nearly four years bargaining with the university administration to get their first contract. Unless a deal is reached at the 11th hour, lecturers are set to go on strike on Wednesday, March 23, joining nearly 200 adjunct professors who are also fighting for their second contract with the university. Even if a deal is reached to avoid a strike, however, Howard has a long way to go to adequately address the long-running systemic problems that have brought non-tenure-track faculty to the point of hitting the picket line. In this mini-cast, we talk to Dr. Aisha Bonner Cozad, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Howard School of Social Work, and Dr. Sean Pears, a Lecturer in Howard's College of Arts & Sciences, about the looming strike at one of the most storied HBCUs in the country. Robert Henri's book The Art Spirit inevitably makes it in any artist's top ten artbook recommendations. As passionate students of Art, we know Robert Henri. His paintings make up an extraordinary body of work. He is considered the "father" of the Ashcan School - a loose alliance of artists whose approach to painting had more in common with journalism than stuffy, academic Traditionalism. Henri taught in many art schools. By some estimates, he taught more than a thousand students – including Edward Hopper and George Bellows. He was universally beloved as a teacher by his students. Today we continue to benefit from his teaching preserved in the pages of The Art Spirit. We have one of Henri's students to thank for preserving Henri's teaching: Margery Ryerson. She compiled a collection of his lecture notes, letters, and commentary together into the inspirational book The Art Spirit. It continues to be a valuable source of instruction and inspiration nearly 100 years after it was first published in 1923. The original text entered the public domain in 2019. What a remarkable gift! We all certainly know Robert Henri. Or, do we? Chop! Chop! Chaplain: Chaplain Ministry in a Beef Processing Plant by Rev. Heidi ReveloWhat does ministry look like in a 2,800-employee beef-processing plant? Chaplain Heidi takes you by the hand as she gently pulls back the thin layer of veneer of real experiences with Muslims, Christians, languages, cultures, customs, traditions, and a splash of corporate policy. It's a merry-go-round of colorful stories with emotional highs and lows punctuated with laughter. "If we can see each other as people, not a label, it changes the way we see the world. I'm a mom, and that Muslim woman is a mom. Now we're seeing each other through the same lens of life's camera. I want others to meet the people I love, care about, and minister to."Rev. Heidi Erion Revelo, Chaplain Heidi, grew up in Cozad, Nebraska. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in communication from University of Nebraska at Kearney and went on to earn a master's of divinity from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. She was ordained in the American Baptist Churches. She served United Methodist churches for six years in Nebraska. Her position as a part-time chaplain at a beef-processing plant began in 2013. All those parables Jesus teaches jump to life when you're from a state of cows and corn. My life parable is 'The Sower.' I am called to sow, to help people, to encourage, and live out my faith. The Wheat and the Weeds, The Mustard Seed, and The Lost Sheep are also parables that speak to her. She is married with two young adult daughters.https://www.amazon.com/Chop-Chaplain-Ministry-Processing-Plant/dp/1648954561/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9781648954566&qid=1626450901&sr=8-1www.Stratton-Press.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcating.com/root/twia/stpr111821d.mp3

41-year-old Leah Rowlands was working as a convenience store clerk in Cozad, Nebraska when she was shot three times and killed.Leah's killer, despite being captured on surveillance cameras, has never been arrested for her murder.Sources for this episode include: The Columbus (Nebraska) Telegram, Lincoln County Crimestoppers, the Lincoln Journal-Star, and the Associated Press, and an article written by Jenn Baxter for Medium. Here's a still image of the suspect in Leah's case: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nezYA0D3TuQ/W1_smIDdaMI/AAAAAAAABck/IVNDA7XTRVU5xFyo6Qg1Q3PNhH6afVNRACLcBGAs/s1600/99-187-double.jpgIf you think you recognize the man in the photo or have any information about Leah's murder, please contact the Dawson County Sheriff's Office at 308–324–3011.
One unseasonably cool (as opposed to freezing) late winter morning on March 10, 1997, at a small travel stop gas station and convenience store right off Interstate 80 in Cozad, a tiny farming community in the heart of Nebraska, a late model Pontiac Grand Am pulled into the parking lot and up to the pumps. Inside the store, 41 year-old Leah Rowlands was behind the counter on her very first day in her new role as manager – her hard work and happy attitude had earned her that position after just a few months. The divorced mother of two was finally getting her life back in order after a tough breakup with a new town, a new boyfriend and a future that appeared nothing but bright. Back at the gas pumps, a large man wearing a hoodie under a leather jacket, sweat pants rolled up to his knees and wearing no shoes got out of the Pontiac, filled the tank and headed into the store. Once inside he grabbed a canned soft drink out of the cooler, opened it and started drinking from it while he waited for a mother and her young son to complete their transaction at the counter and leave. He then went up to Leah at the counter, told her to empty the cash register and get down on the floor. Once she was face down on the floor, he calmly pulled a 9mm semiautomatic handgun from his right pocket, reached over the counter and calmly shot Leah Rowlands to death. After just three minutes after walking into the store, the killer nonchalantly walked out, carrying his soda, a pack of cigarettes and $150 in cash. He got back into the Grand Am and drove off. Never to be seen again. Right up to this moment, no one knows who the big man in the hoodie is. There has never been an arrest. And here's the truly weird and truly awful – and awfully amazing – thing about all of this: The convenience store was completely wired with surveillance cameras. The entire event was caught on videotape, from several angles. The killer stared straight into one of the cameras as he waited for the store to clear out. His unshielded face – while mildly blurry – is clearly visible on the footage from behind the counter, where the murder is recorded in horrifying detail. And no one – no one – has ever identified him. A California license plate on the rear of the Grand Am is illegible. And even though authorities have searched the for that car, it's never been found. The calmness of the killer's demeanor – his seeming complete lack of concern that his face, his body features, his clothing were being recorded – makes the entire episode not just tragic – but haunting…to Leah's family and loved ones and especially to law enforcement. Every available agency, from local police to state authorities to the FBI, continues to work on this case – but until that one person who recognizes her killer comes forward, the case is at a standstill. Take a chilling ride with Melissa back to that Nebraska morning 24 years ago and imagine that you or someone you know can be the one link to bring justice to Leah Rowlands. ALSO - this week Melissa has an update on the Will Cierzan case - a new development that could finally bring justice to Will's family.

In 1993, as a 21-year old new mom, Shana Cozad could not have been less worried about HIV. "It was commonly referred to as a drug user's disease. It was commonly associated as a gay disease," she remembers; "The stigmas and the discrimination and the unsupportiveness attitudes all around the globe around this disease were peaked at an all-time crisis high." Shana herself didn't do drugs, and she had not had many sexual experiences, but she was not a fan of condoms. "I remember getting an HIV test when I was 20, pregnant with my son, and thinking, 'I don't understand why you guys are doing this to me. ... It's those other people out there who are at risk. It's in those other communities.'" Shana, a full-blooded Native American, had been adopted at birth into a highly educated family; and because giving birth had had such a profound effect on her, she planned on becoming an obstetrician/gynecologist. She went to a university with many other young mothers in the student body, and thus unknowingly began her journey with HIV/AIDS.
Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Cpl. Richard S. Weinmaster, "According to his platoon commander, 1st Lt. George Fenton, Weinmaster, a Cozad, Neb., native, was in front of a squad-sized patrol making its way through an eight-foot wide alley bordered on each side by 10-foot tall mud-brick walls, dubbed "ambush alley," when their patrol was attacked by enemy small-arms fire and grenades. In the midst of the firefight, Weinmaster provided accurate suppressive fire with his SAW until he noticed an incoming grenade land near his team leader, Lance Cpl. Tyler Wilkerson. Fenton, a Fredericksburg, Va., native, explained how Weinmaster shoved Wilkerson out of the way then jumped toward the grenade to try and smother the blast. As he jumped, the grenade exploded sending the majority of its shrapnel into Weinmaster. Weinmaster effectively shielded his team leader from the blast and Wilkerson was spared from any shrapnel. Weinmaster, however, received serious wounds, including a piece of shrapnel that entered his left eye socket and traveled halfway into his brain, where it remains to this day. Despite his grave injuries, Weinmaster re-mounted his SAW and continued to provide effective suppressive fire on the enemy positions 50 yards away. Staff Sgt. Kyle Lockhart, Weinmaster's former platoon sergeant, said Weinmaster's heroic actions in the heat of battle are a true reflection of his caliber. "Valor has to come from the heart and soul," said Jim Weinmaster, Cpl. Weinmaster's father. "It has to come from within. Karen [Weinmaster's mother] and I raised him as best as we could, but actions like that go beyond parenting, beyond anything that can be taught." Weinmaster remained humble throughout the ceremony as well as afterward when he was greeted and thanked by scores of Marines, former Marines and grateful civilians. "I didn't do anything special," he told everyone. "Everyone on my left and right would have done the same thing. I was just in the right place at the right time." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week.
