Jesus has granted us everything needed to become like Him, but we must put effort into the process of transformation as well. The very first principle we see in this passage is that: Becoming partakers of the divine nature; of possessing the character, values, attitudes and actions of Jesus Himself, requires serious effort on our part.

How does God transform us into the likeness of Jesus? In lots of ways, but He also uses our own efforts. As Peter writes, "Make every effort to add to your faith goodness." But what kind of effort does it take to grow in Christ? And what if we're not exactly the hard workers God wants us to be?

2 Peter 1:5-11 - Make Every Effort
Going Deeper: Make Every Effort to Enter That Rest
Going Deeper: Make Every Effort to Enter That Rest
“Make every effort,” the writer of Hebrews says, “to be holy.” But wait a minute. We can't be holy in our own effort. Yes, the Holy Spirit is the only One who can make us like Christ. But we aren't to sit back and say, “It's a done deal.” Like the apostle Paul, we should “press on” to be more like Jesus every day.

626 Make Every Effort to Live in Peace With Everyone and to Be Holy, A Guided Christian Meditation on Hebrews 12:14-17 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ. Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Get into a place where you can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. You should hopefully not be driving or anything tensing or unrelaxing. If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation NIV 14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done. NKJV 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or [f]profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. Meditation on Scripture: In each age there are difficulties of living the gospel. In our times there is a great deal of pressure to accept all manner of things in contrast to the Gospel. Equally there is a strong pressure to violently oppose and create enemies with those who don't hold to the ways of the Lord. Here Paul is recommending us to strive for peace with everyone, yet not compromise on the Holiness of the Lord. We do not choose that holiness. We do not adjudicate God's morality. Equally it is important that the Love of Christ become the means whereby we gain as much influence as possible to help others live the ways of God. Not out of scorn or wrath, but out of the charity of God. How grateful we are for the forgiveness God has offered to us and what a special blessing it is to have that peace in our lives. No matter our past, Gods can and does cleanse us of sin. He cleares the conviction we deserve. Having received such a blessing and assisted by such a powerful God how can we possibly have an enemy in anyone who has such forgiveness available to them. We can trust that God will destroy the darkness. In God's holiness we remain protected in Love. Esau, the brother of Jacob, missed out on a profound birthright. The Old testament refers to Jehovah as the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. The saying was not the God of Abraham, Issac, and Esau. Such was Esau's rejection. Yet later Jacob sought peace with Esau and did not attempt to make him a perpetual enemy. The invitation we have is to receive Christ's name upon our heart and then to embody the loving peace of Christ in this world, even as greater moral darkness invades this world and in so doing is how we see God in our lives. . God knows how this story ends and has told us again and again to seek His light and holiness and we will overcome through the merits of Jesus Christ. As you feel Christ's love, pour that love out on others. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Final Question: If you consider the invitation and command to persevere in the faith, what change in your life does that bring to your mind? The life of faith is built on the grace and power of God. Yet we are twice invited to “make every effort” in growing with God in character and confirmation of our calling and election. (2 Peter 1:5-11)

How would you respond if God revealed to you the manner of your death? You'd probably lose a lot of sleep. For most of us death exists as an abstract concept that happens to people “out there”. But for Peter his death loomed large over his life. Listen to Jesus's words to Peter in the gospel of John, “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ‘Follow me.'” For Peter following Christ meant following his Lord into the clutches of death itself armed with nothing but the promise of resurrection and glory. This energized Peter's life with urgency, an urgency that charges through this letter as he calls the young church to pursue godliness by God's own divine power. We have in 2 Peter the final words of a great sage to the people he loves. Words of comfort, warning, and hope. Words that echo and resound throughout the ages until this very day. This is Understanding Second Peter.
Going to church and learning what the Bible says is important - but it isn't the same as actively living out the truth that we believe. The Bible teaches that the key to growing in godliness is not about knowing more, but about excersizing our faith by being obedient (2 Peter 1:3-11). If you have the desire to grow your faith and deepen your relationship with God, this sermon from 2nd Peter is for you. The natural qualities of godliness do not easily come to mankind except by the eager application of relational practices aimed toward God. Your habits will for the most part, determine your holiness; and what you do practically determines your participation in the divine nature.Assess your virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection and love. The growth of these markers demonstrate whether you really are making every effort. You should not be doing this alone. You should have an "inordinate, unexplainable, affection for an actual, real, nameable, authoritative, organized body of Christ." Love the knucklehood. ;-).
