776 I Am The Door, A Guided Christian Meditation on John 10:7-9 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in  and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ.  Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization.  u can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. You should hopefully not be driving or anything tensing or unrelaxing.  If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes.   Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation:   Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation NET 7 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the solemn truth, I am the door for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will come in and go out, and find pasture. NASB 7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. Reflection on Scripture: From time to time I have seen videos of farm animals being groomed or cared for. They often have the animal secured and bound up with machinery as they do their work because the animal does not understand what is happening and is frightened. Even though the caretakers have only the best intentions and the animal will be far better off for the experience, even if there is some pain involved. The animal does not understand the long term intentions of the people caring for him or her. In that moment, all they want is to be unbound and free to run away from the hoof clipping or whatever else is happening.  They lose all sight of what they truly want in a long term sense. These animals surely have some sort of desire to be reunited with their animal family and to be able to once again enjoy the green grass and sunlight they normally get exposed to. In that moment they would throw that all away if it wasn't for a wise caretaker that allows for their momentary concerns to exist because that caretaker knows what is in their best interest.  So it is with us. In an eternal sense we have no idea what we truely want. We think about the things on earth that we want and we are like a cow caught up being groomed. We want nothing more than to escape what we see as the worst thing possible. What we don't realize is that there are things that are far worse than that. We also dont realize the path necessary to get us to those things that we truly want eternally. In this scripture Jesus declares to us that He is the Way. Jesus is the method whereby we get what we truly want deeply and longingly although we have limited ability to understand it. Jesus knows what we most want, even when we can't see it. He knows how to give it to us. If we come unto Him and trust Him as our shepherd, then we will be able to receive the finest pastures available. He is a good God and will guide us to a beautiful existence we cannot now comprehend. Unfortunately at times it requires that we are in situations we don't want here on earth. So the invitation stands. Trust Him as our shepherd. Trust that God knows what he is doing as he allows the struggles of life to challenge and try you because he knows what you will become, through Him.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Final Question: If you consider the invitation and command to persevere in the faith, what change in your life does that bring to your mind?  FIND ME ON: Download my free app: Recenter with Christ Website - ChristianMeditationPodcast.com Voicemail - (602) 888-3795 Email: jared@christianmeditationpodcast.com Apple Podcasts - Christian Meditation Podcast Facebook.com/christianmeditationpodcast Youtube.com/christianmeditaitonpodcast Twitter - @ChristianMedPod

Scripture for Meditation NABRE 3 When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. 5 But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” 6 Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them. KJV 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Reflection on Scripture: As we know, Jesus is the shepherd. We are the crazy sheep. Those who respond to the shepherd are the sheep of the shepherd. We hear the voice of that shepherd and respond. This analogy works if we look deeper also. From the perspective of the sheep they choose to trust the master. They choose to overcome their fear and respond to His words of calm. They think that it is a natural thing for them to be loved and protected. Of course they don't need to worry too greatly for predators because predators don't ever overcome them. The sheep that have put their trust in the shepherd may even think themselves quite clever.  Yet at the end of the day it is the wisdom of the shepherd that taught the sheep. The sheep would not have anyone to trust if it wasnt for the wisdom of the Shepherd. The shepherd has patience and has given protection. All the things that the sheep have learned to assume is just the normal way of things, are actually the agency of the shepherd. The decision of the shepherd is what makes the relationship meaningful. If the shepherd was uncaring or unreliable then the sheep would not trust that person.  The sheep do not trust a stranger because there is nothing trustworthy for them to see. The only reason we can even try and follow God's commands is because he is powerful enough to create a universe, he was wise enough to create a law and then a new law that would bless us, and ultimately he had the love enough to help us overcome our failures. It is the wisdom and agency of the shepherd that makes it even possible for the sheep to listen. The sheep would not even be alive without the shepherd.   Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Reflection on Scripture: One thing we can get caught up in while doing devotional reading is the idea that we need a profound and unique insight in order to make a devotional meaningful. I know I have encountered many clever and nifty thoughts reading devotionals. Although this can be fun, none of that should take us away from the simplest idea that is the central core of the gospel of Jesus Christ. An all knowing loving God, chose to love you before you were even created. In that love he also created a method by which we can learn and grow and be redeemed.  The life mission of Jesus Christ is the outpouring of that love and it is offered to you. We are his sheep. He is both the shepherd and also the gate by which we come in and out. He is the way but he also shows us the way. There is a door specifically designed for us sheep. A door and a path that if we use, we will find safety. We can complicate it but ultimately there is no important message that can ease our burden than that. Anything you are facing in this world is a temporary challenge. God does not shout down answers at us from heaven but has shown us the way to live through the example of Jesus' life. He shows us how to overcome challenge with love and patience. He shows us strength in the face of overwhelming odds. He shows us that good will always win over evil.  If you are listening to scripture and responding to it then you are following the good Shepheard. I encourage you to continue in that walk. The path he has laid out will guide us to victory and safety. He is your loving savior and will never leave you or forsake you.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation 1 Thessalonians 1:4-6 NET 7 As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For from you the message of the Lord has echoed forth not just in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place reports of your faith in God have spread, so that we do not need to say anything. 9 For people everywhere report how you welcomed us and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath. RSV 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedo′nia and in Acha′ia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedo′nia and Acha′ia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us what a welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Reflection on Scripture: What does it mean to become an imitator of Jesus Christ? When I was out driving today I saw a sign for a church that said they were a friendly church. Many people point to the acceptance of jesus Christ and claim that he would reach out to all and be friendly. I have heard other Christians resist this notion claiming that Jesus was not nice and that is just us reading our modern sensibilities into scripture and that Jesus holds people accountable and prefers confrontation with the Word to bring people to truth.  Since we are trying to be like Jesus and as Paul says here, to be an imitator of Jesus, it is far from a philosophical point to wonder how Jesus would approach sinners.  Jesus had an amazing ability to make sinners both feel challenged but also loved. I think a characterization that demands we choose between Jesus accepting sinners, and permitting sin is a quite limited perspective that does not align with Jesus' actions in life. He wanted people to depart from activities that would cause them to be less like Him. Things that God calls sins do not become meaningless just because Jesus is willing to forgive us for them.  I think it is a fundamentally important point that as we turn from our sin and try and reject the idolatry of the word, that this is one of the ways this scripture points to us following the example. Equally important is what it says in the verses we covered in the last episode, that we be filled with the Joy of the Holy Spirit. I believe that as we live in that joy it will pour out of our lives and help others to feel loved, but hopefully to aspire to the kind of relationship with God that feeds this joy. This week I was talking with someone who had engaged in something that they saw as a grievous sin. Both he and I agreed that it was a poor choice but due to the way I engaged with him, he felt completely loved but also completely convicted of that sin. He committed to bring it to God and return his heart to the Lord. I think this is an example of the kind of balance we can make between departing from sin but also rejoicing in the spirit. Above all the greatest invitation is for us to place our trust on the Son who was raised to heaven and will deliver us from the wrath to come. Let us ponder how we are doing with our goals to emulate this kind of loving faith  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Jesus taught that the Psalms of the Bible were directly inspired by God's Spirit… Matthew 22:41-44 NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? 768 Our Gospel Did Not Come To You In Word Only, A Guided Christian Meditation on 1 Thessalonians 1:4-6 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in  and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ.  Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Get into a place where you can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. Scripture for Meditation 1 Thessalonians 1:4-6 NIV 4 For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. ESV 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, Meditation on Scripture: You are beloved and chosen of God. Raw intellect is not the complete package in terms of faith. How is it that a testimony of God grows and develops? Is it expressly because a person acquires the right facts? I would suggest that knowledge is an element of faith but it is far from the most important. It is more important to experience God's spirit. Sometimes we can say that we understand that then we live as though it is true.Through that spirit we receive faith. Through that spirit we are transformed. I think this means that it is important for us to focus on welcoming the Gospel and that Spirit into our heart. I certainly don't claim that our effort dictates the activity of God's spirit but if we look past God speaking to our hearts we miss much of what he would say to us individually. As God speaks to our heart, this becomes the foundation of our faith.  So I think it is incredibly important that we prioritize our focus on the way God's spirit speaks to us. A couple days ago I was praying for someone I love. I was praying that they could experience peace. In my heart I felt the answer from the Lord is that this was the phase of life they were in. I then had this distinct answer that any words of comfort would need to come from me. This inspired me to try and be even more thoughtful about my answers to this person. I certainly don't think this sets any systemic theology. In some ways the objective truth of this inspiration doesn't matter, it blessed my life, and as a result blessed the life of the person I was praying for. I think for me, this represented a connection with God's spirit. The still small voice. It is both subtle but also power.  So in moments of meditation focus on listening to the Spirit of God. Also in moments of prayer and quiet that don't quite ascend to the depth of what we would call mediation, focus on listening also. It is not by words only that God through the gospel came to you and continues to transform your life. I'm visiting with her this week. I've been thinking a lot about memory. How much of who we are is generated through memory and Where do memories reside? Some people may say the brain but does that mean if our spirit leaves our body we lose all our memories? It seems that a scriptural understanding of memory suggests that memory is maintained even when we are disembodied, as a result memory is not a human phenomenon.   I love the phrase here in this scripture, to remember before God the work of faith. Our actions in life are objectively seen by God and imperfectly remembered by us. There is a power in our attempts to remember. A powerful way to stay connected to the Lord is to constantly hold Him in our rememberance, to reflect on God's grave and love toward us.  As I was talking with my loved one I was realizing that without memory we cannot live for the future or the past, but only for the moment. We can actively choose faith in this current moment regardless of how imperfect our human memory is.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation Luke 7 ESV 48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” NIV 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Meditation on Scripture: Today I have a simple and direct message that forms the core of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no more important sentence we more need to hear than this one. Your sins are forgiven. We spend a great deal of time worried about many different outcomes and different decisions, yet this one is by far the most important. The good news of the Gospel is that this sentence is made possible by the redeemer, Jesus Christ. Regardless of the filth of the world, how stained we have become by its sin, or how prideful we are in thinking we dont need forgiveness despite the ample evidence to the contrary, God can forgive.  Jesus performs miracles, we see that in the Gospel accounts. He teaches profound lessons of instruction of moral clarity and righteousness. Yet these people here are baffled that he forgives sins. For those of us who have already accepted that Jesus is the Son of God and as it says in the Gospels that Jesus has take the role of judge. We can forget how unique that is. Here they sat with a man who claimed to forgive sins. Who is Jesus that he can forgive your sins? As you come to truely believe Jesus, not just believe in Him, you come to understand that he certainly is able to forgive sin. We, just like this woman, can be comforted when we ponder that declaration that OUR sins are forgiven. As our faith in God has allowed us to receive a new heart, willing to do what God has asked, we can also Go in Peace. If you lack peace in your heart, set aside all the things that lessen that peace and accept this statement from Jesus. Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. KJV 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children. 36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. 37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Scripture for Meditation Luke 7 ESV 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” NET 9 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 So Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” He replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed him 500 silver coins, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Meditation on Scripture: When believers read this part we can be a bit incredulous to the response of the pharisee. Since we have an understanding about who Jesus is and what he knew, it seems silly to question Him. As though this pharisee was more knowledgeable than Jesus regarding this woman and her actions. There is a kind of arrogance that accompanies the judgemental heart. He had his own information and presumed himself to be wiser than Jesus. Since he knew something of the woman's crimes, that knowledge caused him to doubt Jesus.  Jesus then starts a parable that will teach a valuable lesson. It wasn't ignorance or weakness that led him to welcome this action from this woman. It was grace. When we ignore Jesus' grace, then we approach the heart position of this pharisee. There are times in our lives when we feel that we know what is just and unjust. We think we have all the facts needed to be clear on how offended to be about something and we end up in a very similar situation as this man.  Jesus invites us into a position of grace with Him and His other children. Whenever we have a feeling of moral superiority over anyone for any reason, this mindset rears its head. We are all debtors to God. None of us have the funds needed to pay that debt. He points out that He is willing to forgive us. God extends his grace to you, and the other people we judge. During this meditation may we embrace grace. Leave to God, the role of offense. Our role is not to be indignant at others but to be grateful to the one who forgives our debt and allow Him to deal with his other debts however he chooses. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. NET 31 “To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.' 33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!' 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him, a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' 35 But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

Meditation on Scripture: If we are not careful or thoughtful we can end up with a misunderstanding of what this message teaches. First we must be careful not to mix up the stories of this occurring. There is another one that shows up later. Jesus corrects people regarding their misunderstanding of the action this woman performs. Jesus accepted her tribute from this woman for various reasons. Jesus calls out the hypocrisy of human judgment. There is certainly a value in this lesson but I think for the moment I would like to focus on the woman and her actions. The humility and love represented are so meaningful. Jesus will go on to compare the actions of this woman to His host but the reason he does so is the devotion this woman displays.  There is a deep devotion she shows. So in this situation it can be helpful to consider ourselves in this role. Do we feel the kind of love and devotion that would inspire us to humble ourselves in front of others? Do we worry too much about what other people would think instead of truly lifting our eyes to glorify God? As you read about her act to glorify God you can really connect with how meaningful Jesus was to her. THis was not a passive act of regular gratitude. This was a profound and gut wrenching description of the value this woman placed on Jesus.  So as we reflect on the disinterested perspective she took on her own pride we have something to reflect on. Are we willing to similarly pour out our love for God? How can we demonstrate his same kind of gratitude for the Lord? Put your heart and mind on the things that God calls to you as things to show Him gratitude.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit.
