We bumped into Daniel from Lasers and LEDs (instagram.com/lasersandleds) at Maker Faire Bay Area 2024. Check out his awesome project! This thing was really amazing in person. The cube spins at variable rates and creates a stunning visual optical illusion.. it was unlike anything I'd seen before, and it was such a delight getting to meet Daniel and see his work. "Tinkering is a fun way to learn about the world around you," says Ryan in his new book, 'The Tinkering Workshop,' which promotes creativity and playful experimentation with everyday materials for families, children, and educators. I've known Ryan for many years from when he worked at The Exploratorium's Tinkering Studio. Ryan will be at Maker Faire Bay Area this weekend where he will organize hands-on workshops and talk about his book. https://make.co/make-cast/

Emily and I spent the weekend in San Mateo at Maker Faire! We talk about all the cool stuff we saw, the people we met and a few other adventures along the way. I actually ended up in the ER of San Mateo Medical Center!!
Disembodied eyeballs, smoking electrical wiring in a vintage Porsche, and prepping for Maker Faire Bay Area! Also talking about current projects, life hacks and 3D printed black holes.
(Photo courtesy of Samantha Razook Murphy/Curious Jane, and used with permission.) Sparkly slime and twinkly wearables seem like cool girls' DIY projects . But, as Curious Jane founder Samantha Razook Murphy is proving, they're also a whole lot more. Curious Jane, which Samantha founded in 2008, is a programming and content provider for girls, ages six through eleven. And through summer camps, after-school workshops and birthday parties, Samantha and her staff are using science, engineering and design to teach girls to become confident makers. (Photo courtesy of Samantha Razook Murphy/Curious Jane, and used with permission.) Samantha, who is a Brooklyn-based graphic and industrial artist, is also a mom. Ten years ago, while planning projects that would challenge her daughters' creative talents, she came up with the concept of her STEAM-oriented day camp. With its programs, Curious Jane gives girls a community in which to explore, ask questions and invent. Along the way, the young participants develop their skills in engineering and problem-solving. And often, they think they're just "making something awesome". (Photo courtesy of Samantha Razook Murphy/Curious Jane, and used with permission.) Since its creation ten years ago, Curious Jane has expanded dramatically. Their website now includes how-to videos and their "Project of the Week". Three years ago, Samantha also began publishing Curious Jane magazine. The magazine projects also resulted in a book, filled with hands-on projects for girls who love to make things. And this summer, in addition to the regular New York-based events, some California workshops will be happening. Best of all, if you happen to be in San Francisco on Thursday evening, May 17th, you can see one of those workshops, first-hand. Curious Jane will be co-hosting a "Family Maker Block Party" this Thursday, May 17th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., as part of "Week of Learning". And "Week of Learning", in turn, leads up to the flagship Maker Faire Bay Area, opening Friday afternoon in San Mateo. Samantha talked about her experiences creating Curious Jane, her upcoming San Francisco workshop and some of her favorite hands-on maker projects that give young participants the opportunity to become curious and inspired designers and engineers. (Photo courtesy of Samantha Razook Murphy/Curious Jane, and used with permission.) In this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Samantha first came to incorporate science into her art; The story of Curious Jane's start, as a summer day camp; What Samantha discovered worked best, in teaching the girls maker skills; One common stress, among young girls in a maker situation, which the program removes; Some of the ways Samantha will be expanding the maker curriculum this summer; How Curious Jane magazine evolved; Some of Samantha's favorite projects which have appeared in the magazine; A preview of the workshop which will be offered during the "Maker Family Block Party" on Thursday evening; (And, a preview of the "Maker Family Block Party"!) Some of the biggest "crowd-pleaser" projects from the workshops; Hiring information for summer, 2019, for camp staff; Some favorite maker resources parents or teachers might like, as summer approaches; Samantha's plans for future expansion (and how to reach out to her, if you're in another city!) How Samantha has seen her own daughters grow and explore, as makers, since the program started.
(Photo courtesy of Ken Burns, and used with permission.) When Tiny Circuits founder/president Ken Burns began his 2011 Kickstarter campaign, he simply planned to make, and distribute, some really cool technology. He had no idea that his miniature electronics platform, the TinyDuino, was going to launch a business. Today, Ken's startup, Tiny Circuits, operates out of a former rubber factory in downtown Akron. Not only do they offer the TinyDuino--an Arduino-compatible platform the size of a U.S. quarter--they also offer kits for tiny (and cute) miniature electronics projects. And their electronics are open-source, allowing makers to add their own creativity and imagination! Tiny Circuits will be exhibiting from the startup pavilion at the Maker Faire Bay Area, in May. Among the items they'll display: the Tiny Arcade, an operative game arcade you can hold in the palm of your hand--and the TinySaber, which is just over four inches long! Ken talked about his experience creating his startup, Tiny Circuits, offered some advice for fellow entrepreneurs and gave a preview of some of the cool creations he and his his staff will be previewing at the Maker Faire Bay Area. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Ken first became interested in engineering and maker skills; The story of Tiny Circuits; What the early days of the startup were like; Ken's advice for fellow maker/entrepreneurs, from lessons learned during his first year in business; Some of the products Ken and his staff will be exhibiting at Maker Faire Bay Area, including a preview of something brand-new!; Where to find Ken and his Tiny Circuits exhibit at the Maker Faire; Some of the new ideas Tiny Circuits' products have inspired, in the maker community; A couple of no-solder projects available for beginning makers. Planning on being in the Bay Area in May? Check out the Maker Faire, Friday, May 18th through Sunday, May 20th at the San Mateo County Event Center! Here's the link for more information.

THE US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY was out in force at Maker Faire Bay Area. The Department hopes to demystify the goings-on at its various national labs in the Bay Area by portraying its scientists as makers. Those scientists also hope to excite kids about the advanced technology they get to use. We spoke to three scientists about sensors, supercomputers and cybersecurity to learn more:
