J'ai moi-même un petit coup de mou, comme je vous le confie dans l'introduction de cet épisode, qui tombe à pic.Mon invitée, la poétesse Kiyémis, déteste les dystopies. Et nous propose, pour balayer la peur, de convoquer la joie, la joie comme outil de résistance, responsabilité collective et pratique politique. Oui la joie est une déraison, voire une folie face à la violence du monde. Mais le monde n'est-il pas lui-même absolument déraisonnable ?Je connais Kiyémis depuis longtemps. J'observe depuis des années sa voix s'épanouir et ses vers fleurir « et refleurir » - du titre de son magnifique roman sur l'histoire de sa grand-mère - sur nos plaies. Sa dernière production est un ouvrage collectif intitulé : « Pour la Joie, Une ode à la résistance poétique et politique » (ed. Les Liens qui Libèrent), un ouvrage collectif où l'on retrouve à ses côtés les plumes de plusieurs autrices : Rim Battal, Douce Dibondo, Claude-Emmanuelle Gaian-Maull, Nadia Yala Kisukidi, Mélissa Laveaux, Fania Noël, Laura Nsafou et Coline Pierré.Plongez vous dans cet épisode, imbibez-vous du rire de Kiyémis, des quelques lignes qu'elle lit pour vous à voix haute, et convainquez-vous, avec nous, que « l'autre rive existe ». Une expression qui oblige à l'espoir, à l'amour, à la lutte. Elle est une façon de fuir la peur qui paralyse et d'habiller de lumière la colère, qui reste une boussole mais, à la longue, épuise les corps.De corps, il est beaucoup question aussi dans notre échange. Kiyémis aborde son enfance de petite fille « solaire » qui aime écrire, rêvasser et danser devant son miroir, suivie d'une adolescence où les injonctions à « se faire petite » ont eu raison de son élan. Elle qui est l'autrice d'un essai sur la grossophobie « Je suis votre pire cauchemar », nous invite à faire corps avec ce corps et à l'envisager comme un navire puissant, un survivant magnifique capable de nous faire jouir de la beauté du monde et surtout de créer.Car la clé de la leçon de Kiyémis c'est créer. Dans son cas, écrire. In Episode 40 DDSWTNP cover Parts 3 and 4 and Manx Martin (2) of Underworld and welcome to the show Patrick Whitmarsh, a scholar of eco-criticism, the anthropocene, and the contemporary U.S. novel. We spend time discussing the importance of Underworld to Patrick's arguments about perspective, scale, images of the earth, and the advent of what he calls the “vertical sciences,” taking in geological discoveries, aerial viewpoints, and all the new understandings of natural and built environments that DeLillo's novel juxtaposes. Topics and images that preoccupy us in this discussion include DeLillo's reasons for placing side by side the views of “garbage archeologist” Jesse Detwiler, Nick's religious self-examination, and a convention for swingers; Klara Sax's “rooftop summer,” film-viewing, and all the honing of her artistic perspective that takes place across these 1970s sections; and the many comparisons of filmmaking and other artforms that dominate Part 4: “Cocksucker Blues,” especially Sergei Eisenstein's science fiction and montage techniques and Ismael Muñoz's developing graffiti work. Does DeLillo arrange Underworld according to Eisenstein's techniques, and does this idea help mediate questions about modernism and postmodernism? What power is expressed when Moonman claims about his painted subway train, “I'm your movie, motherfucker”? What themes of ecology and lost innocence emerge in considering Klara's views of “the West” and the Zapruder film? How do such scenes connect to the aerial photography important to Matt Shay's surreally treated military work in “the Pocket”? What layers of paranoia cut across Manx's quest to sell the baseball? Penser la « frontière », en mouvement Globe-trotter polyglotte, Paul B. Preciado débarque à Paris à la fin des années 90 : sa lecture approfondie des philosophes Michel Foucault ou Gilles Deleuze lui a donné « envie de vivre dans la langue française ». Ce « contrebandier entre deux mondes » – qui, à ce moment-là, ne s'appelle pas encore Paul – publie en 2000 son Manifeste contra-sexuel, un essai illustré par ses soins sur l'histoire socioculturelle d'un objet « qui met mal à l'aise » aussi bien son psy que ses amies féministes : le gode. S'en suivra en 2008, après avoir contribué à importer en France la culture drag-king, un récit « auto-pornographique » intitulé Testo junkie (Grasset), vendu en France à vingt mille exemplaires, dans lequel il raconte le début de sa transition via des prises de testostérone ou les débuts de son histoire d'amour avec l'écrivaine Virginie Despentes, qui voit chez lui « une arrogance sexy, une arrogance joyeuse ». De son Espagne natale à son appartement de Ménilmontant en passant par New York, Berlin, Athènes ou Zagreb, Preciado semble aussi fluide dans ses mouvements que dans ses idées « monstres ».  Mais comment écrit-il, dans un cabanon corse, un port des Cyclades ou son appartement de Ménilmontant en forme de U comme Uranus ? En mutation constante, dans le journal comme au cinéma Depuis 2013, toutes les deux ou trois semaines, Paul B. Preciado tient chronique dans Libération. Le philosophe y saborde l'usage d'un mot-valise bourré de haine (« féminazie »), suggère de déboulonner chaque statue de notre passé colonial, évoque avec tendresse sa mère âgée, déclare « la grève des utérus » ou son amour « pour le mouvement délicat d'une chenille sur l'écorce d'un arbre ». Il y raccourcit ses phrases et élargit son lectorat, qui ne se cantonne plus aux universitaires et aux camarades des luttes LGBTQIA+. En 2019, un recueil de ces textes, qui portent la mémoire de l'oppression sexiste, homophobe ou transphobe, écrits dans des hôtels ou des aéroports, rassemblés sous le titre Un appartement sur Uranus (Grasset), s'orne d'une préface de Virginie Despentes. L'autrice de King-Kong Théorie prévient : « L'idée n'est pas de vous laisser indemne, mais vous verrez, c'est sans violence. » La même année, Preciado provoque une polémique internationale lors d'un colloque de psychanalystes freudiens, en passant par Kafka. I interviewed Sister Sylvester about Constantinopoliad on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for Constantinopoliad: "Constantinopoliad is a collective reading and audio work. A response to the archive of the poet Constantine Cavafy, the story is inspired by the blank and torn-out pages in Constantinopoliad, an Epic, the journal the teenage Cavafy began when he and his family fled Alexandria; by lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: The exploration of identity [1] as a person has moved from his home [4], and into a distant land [9] with some feelingsof being exiled [12], but also the implication of homosexuality [5] within the context of having to remain hidden or taboo [12]. It's dipping into the vast archive [9] of Cavafy's expressions of identity [1] and poetry and art [5], and recontextualizing as these universal experiences that are still very much relevant today [9]. Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: collaboratively reading together - narrative distillation of an archive. You listening to the audio narration, but you have to negotiate how to co-read this "book" object together. The form of this "book" also deviates from normal book where it is part pop-up book, but also a flat stage to be explored with the other person. This externalized book becomes a bit of an abstracted theatrical stage for the story as it unfolds, but there are also more explicitly architectural elements to this "book" object as well. The piece also creates an implicit invitation to connect and talk with your audience partner afterwards about the piece2nd Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: AMAZING MUSIC + time-based narration + lighting. There's some amazing synchrony between the music, the timing of the reading, as well as the lighting. It really gives a strong sense of time. The reading of the story almost feels like a narrative podcast of sorts, but is mostly a matter of convenience of recording of the live performance so that it could be toured at immersive festivals without the burden of paying for all of the performers and musicians.3rd Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Book like object as an architectural artifact, and has a whole spatial journey. The installation also had tables with lighting effects, but also there were projctions that were happening within the space as well. Most of the focus of spatial experience happens within the context of the architectural nature of the "book" object, but the other theatrical elements of the environment definitely help to cultivate an overall mood.4th Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: Explore the story through various interactions. There's no narrative agency per se, although one could deviate from directly reading along with the text. There's an implicit contract to stay on course with your actions since you're negotiating the experience with another person. Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Exploration of the "lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems" Artist Statement: "My favorite response to this work was an audience member who described it as 'making love to a stranger through a book'. The work invites audiences into a sensual and concrete encounter with Cavafy's life and poems: fingers making contact with history; illumination revealing images from between the pages; sounds conjuring the ghosts of 19th century Alexandrian cabarets. With words by sister sylvester, score by Nadah El Shazly, and illustrations by Efrîn Özyetis, Constantinopoliad is a multi-sensory encounter with the past, and with forgotten stories that can haunt us into new imaginings for the present." I interviewed Craig Quintero & Phoebe Greenberg about Blur on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for Blur: "Blur presents a new myth for the modern age, where science has changed how we think about life and death. With cloning and advances in resurrection biology, we have obscured the boundaries between the living and the dead — the natural and the artificial. This extended reality theatrical production unfolds as a dreamscape, shifting between real and virtual, taking participants on a journey of reflection on grief and eternality." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: Some fundamental questions around LIFE [1] and DEATH [8]. Blur born out of a "desire to explore the emotional and ethical terrain where science, loss and imagination collide." Philosophical and ethical implications [9] of the science human cloning [9] as explored through the main story of a mother [4] who's child [5] has died [8]. Explores a speculative and imaginal space of scienced-based possibilities [9] with imagery reflecting these moral and ethical dilemmas [9] around these hybrid entities [Combination of [1] Self with [7] ]. Also the implications of taking extinct animals [8] like the Wooley Mammoth or Dire Wolf, and resurrecting them through science [9], and bringing them back to life [1]. Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Blend of Immersive VR, CGI, Cinematic 360 video, 180 video, Mixed Reality. With specific architectural modulations, live performance, and integrations of your embodiment. Some Generative AI around your representations of embodied identity. There's also a LOT of invisible spatial choreography that is happening behind the scenes in order to move a number of human bodies through a physical space without colliding into each other, whilst also creating a seamless virtually-mediate spatial journey that is also A LOT MORE VAST than the constraints of the physical space. So it really feels like being taken on an expansive journey through space and time within this piece.2nd Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Constant perversion of expectations and experience of having the "rug pulled out from underneath you." Symbolic Dream Logic, and Theatre of the Absurd. There's a lot of abstract and semiotic associative linking that Quintero describes as a "Rauschenberg-like collage" blending and blurring together lots of various archetypal forms to communicate their message. There's definitely a narrative to be parsed, but you have to sort of piece it together as there's a lot of symbolic communication, as well as expectation-perversion that either creates a deep sense of awe and wonder, or it can also be confusion for some where the overall plausibilty throughline and suspension of disbelief results more in a break in presence from a "I don't get it" experience rather than a deepening of awe from an unbounded possibility space. Overall feels a bit like waking from a dream, and then trying to parse it. There is also a moment of a theatre-for-one encounter, and then later more of a collective experience.3rd Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: LIVE PERFORMANCE of theatrical actors. There's some constructed locomotive agency within bounds to replicate wandering. Some more interactive parts near the end. No real agency to change the flow of the narrative4th Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: Cinematic VR, but also a specific cadence and pacing of the narrative. Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Blur explores "fundamental questions of identity and selfhood, and what makes 'me' me?" The strurctures of our society and science mashed up against the dissolving and dissolution of the boundaries between the science and humanity bringing questions around the archetypal qualities that make us uniquely human. The idealized image of the human form from evolution, then gets dissolved through hybrid combinations, that is also amplified by the actual blending and blurring of communication media from MR to VR to Invidual and Collective Theatrical Performances to Architecture with bit of magic thrown in. It's a seamless use of the forms of immersive and experiential to amplify the overall themes of the piece. What is Imaginal / Virtual / Synthetic / Artificial / Eternal? vs What is Real and Mortal? Life vs Death in the context of Scientific Truths and Technological Advance. "With cloning and advances in resurrection biology, we have obscured the boundaries between the living and the dead — the natural and the artificial." Artist Statement: "Blur was born from a shared desire to explore the emotional and ethical terrain where science, loss and imagination collide.Meeting in Venice, we recognised a deep alignment in poetic storytelling and a fascination with questions raised by cloning, bioengineering and de-extinction. The work examines the human urge to transcend death and the consequences of reshaping life. Combining immersive theatre, motion capture, passthrough, VR and AR, we invite audiences into a sensorial and surreal journey — where AI, myth and grief intersect. The 180° immersive short film is a high-stakes action thriller about a group of strangers who take an old Russian Soyuz rocket to mine a near-earth, treasure laden asteroid for a chance at unimaginable wealth. After the film, the experience continues and the audience enters the world of Asteroid when they receive an SOS from one of the characters, DK Metcalf, who was left for dead. The viewer becomes a player when they are invited to aid in DK's rescue. Through speaking with an AI-generated version of DK — played by the NFL player as himself — the user determines the truth about what happened on the asteroid and sends his exact location to NASA for rescue." Combination of live-action 180-video along with CGI-driven animations also in 180-video2nd Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Worldbuilding of sci-fi extraction of asteroid, you embody a character in story in the last part, and you break the fourth wall in the onboarding talking to the actor who plays a character via AI3rd Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Conversational-driven AI Story Extension - You talk to the actor DK Metcalf at the beginning and with the character at the end. A bit of puzzling together of the myserious aspects of the story4th Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: continues as an immersive story game - Improv convo + slightly nudged and directed exploration Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Everyone are anti-heroes archetypes - Power and Greed vs Limitations, constraints, boundaries, death. Doug Liman says there aren't many anti-heroes in space movies, Han Solo is an exception. What if all of the characters were Han Solos? What drama would ensue? Artist Statement: "I've always thought of myself as an immersive filmmaker. The goal was to put the audience in the action, not to be sort of passively watching it. Now that the technology has caught up with us, I really can put the audience in the rocket. Asteroid is the story of a ragtag group of astronauts who booked a ride on a used Soyuz spacecraft. An asteroid passes near Earth. It's laden with precious metals and gems. If you can get there, you can become insanely wealthy. It's a modern gold rush." Told through the eyes of Anna, a lifelong resident of Hallein, a historic town at the foot of the Austrian Alps, the experience flows from first-hand experience of the devastating floods that hit Europe in 2021 to reveal how reconnecting with nature may be key to protecting ourselves going forward." Un entretien avec l'essayiste et documentariste Pauline Chanu, qui vient de publier un essai puissant : Sortir de la Maison Hantée. (La Découverte).Vous vous apprêtez à écouter le premier épisode hanté de Folie Douce, préparez-vous.Lorsque le festival Offscreen m'a proposé d'enregistrer un entretien dans la chapelle de la Salpêtrière, à Paris, j'ai tout de suite su que je devais m'y entretenir avec Pauline Chanu pour revenir avec elle sur les violences qu'ont subi, à la fin du 19ème siècle, les « hystériques » du professeur Charcot, des femmes dont la folie servait de spectacle aux intellectuels parisiens et dont le corps, sexualisé à outrance, s'imprime encore dans nos imaginaires.Alors on a fait ça. On a parlé de ces patientes d'hier et de leurs héritières, les psychiatrisées, d'aujourd'hui. On a parlé d'Augustine, de Freud, mais aussi de Britney Spears, de Marie Trintignant. On a aussi parlé des raisons personnelles qui ont poussé Pauline Chanu à se pencher sur cette question.Car Pauline, en s'appuyant sur des entretiens nombreux, avec des femmes victimes, démontre que l'imaginaire de l'hystérique infuse encore les mentalités aujourd'hui, y compris au sein du monde médical, où le diagnostic continue d'être prononcé de façon plus ou moins assumé. Ce terme prend parfois la forme de qualificatifs différents comme “borderline”, mais sert toujours à rabaisser la parole des femmes. Et toujours, Pauline Chanu est limpide à ce sujet, il y a derrière la femme dite « hystérique » un « hystériseur », c'est-à-dire un homme violent qui pratique le “gaslighting” car il a tout interêt à ce que la parole de cette femme soit totalement décrédibilisée.Il régnait une atmosphère très particulière pendant notre échange, qui persiste, je le sais, à l'écoute de l'épisode. J'espère au fond de moi que quelques patientes du professeur Charcot s'étaient glissées dans la chapelle lors de cet enregistrement où nous leur avons fait justice.Je remercie infiniment Pauline Chanu d'avoir accepté mon invitation. But don’t worry, human creativity is still king—especially when we use AI as a collaborator to create hilarious, custom animations of floppy disks barfing green data goo, complete with gassy liquid sound fx! Looking to the stars, we were absolutely captivated by SpaceX’s Starship landing beautifully in the Indian Ocean and their wild plans to launch giant AI compute satellites to build an off-planet internet. We also discussed the hilarious twist of a 1972 Soviet Venus probe, Cosmos 482, finally crash-landing back on Earth after a 53-year detour in orbit. To top it all off, astronomers just found LHS1140B, a rocky exoplanet 48 light-years away that has a faint stream of helium, marking the first time we’ve detected an atmosphere on a habitable-zone rocky world! It’s a beautifully abundant, high-tech future ahead of us, and as we pack our bags for the Laurentian Mountains, we can’t wait to see what wildly optimistic paradigm shifts happen next. Enjoy!
