    The Great Search - Programmer/Debugger for ATSAMD21 Chips

    This week we've got a request from someone who didn't manage to get a J-Link Mini EDU (https://www.digikey.com/short/rh972jb3) before the part shortage kicked in. These things were great for use for programming just about any ARM chip, and are very affordable for students! But you can't get them anymore. In particular this customer wanted to use Atmel Studio to program and step-debug ATSAMD chips - in which case we let them know about the very-handy AVR-ICE modules. Despite being called AVR In Circuit Emulator, they are also good for any Atmel/MCP Cortex chip. They're also the only debugger/programmer that is supported from within Atmel Studio. While the boxed ICE adapter is a lil expensive, there's a PCB-only board version we found, just don't forget to pick up a 10-pin SWD cable (https://www.digikey.com/short/r9tfpdn5) while you're there. NB: Yes, these are more expensive than your standard $20 CMSIS-DAP adapters, but if you are really spending a lot of time with AVR/SAM chips, they will save you a ton of time from having to fiddle with OpenOCD and we find they're worth the cost!     This week's EYE ON NPI will pique your curiosity... it's Microchip's AVR-IoT Cellular Mini Development Board featuring the Sequans Monarch 2 GM02S cellular module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/avr-iot-cellular-mini-development-board) This dev board really knows how to get us interested with an AVR128DB48 128KB-flash AVR chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/4pq3d2q3), Sequans GM02S compact LTE cell module (https://www.digikey.com/short/4qbfcn17), Feather format (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather), Stemma QT / Qwiic connector (https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-adafruit-stemma-qt/what-is-stemma-qt) and Arduino library support (https://github.com/microchip-pic-avr-solutions/avr-iot-cellular-arduino-library) This is an excellent dev board to use if you want to take advantage of the huge ecosystem afforded by Arduino, Feather, Qwiic/QT - you should be able to use the many thousands of libraries and hardware accessories for quick prototyping. As mentioned, this dev board is Feather shaped, with a USB Type C connector, Li-poly battery charger, and built in programmer/debugger/serial interface for the AVR chip. The individual microcontroller is a AVR128DB48 AVR (https://www.digikey.com/short/4pq3d2q3) which comes with 128KB flash and 16KB RAM. Think of it as a super-beefy ATmega328P! A SAMD21E 'curiosity' chip is used as the programming interface and also serial interface. When plugged in, the board shows up as a disk drive, with a getting started guide bookmark and some other specification files. While following the getting started guide we found that you can also drag hex files over to program it, very handy for quick-start! To program it, MCP suggests using the DxCore from SpenceKonde (https://github.com/SpenceKonde/DxCore) in Arduino so you'll want to get that installed while you follow the rest of the guide. Next up, time to activate the included SIM card from Truphone (https://activate.truphone.com/) that comes with the dev kit. This SIM is free to activate and is good for up to 150 MB of data transfer and 90 days, which is plenty of time to explore the board before needing to renew. Activating the SIM only took us 5 minutes - don't forget to power cycle after activation to make sure the module and SIM re-authorize. One of the surprises we had while trying this eval board is the really good documentation and learning system that is over at https://iot.microchip.com/avr-iot-cellular-mini - we're kinda used to verbose text-based documentation or using specialized software that only runs on Windows. This is the first time we've seen a really nice documentation system with simple step-by-steps, lots of photos, links and a clear navigation system. There are also two interesting in-browser compilation and serial monitor widgets that we spotted, which is a good sign that folks are starting to move towards browser-and-filesystem replacements for tool-chains. The Arduino library code is available over at https://github.com/microchip-pic-avr-solutions/avr-iot-cellular-arduino-library which looks like it's got platform.io support and you can download a release for installation into the Arduino IDE. (We do recommend someone at MCP try to add a proper release to the Arduino library manager to save one extra step if possible!) Once installed, there are a few helpful examples to get you going. The first one is just connecting to an HTTP endpoint and parsing out the result and it worked...really well! We were able to connect to the AT&T cellular network and fetch the data within a minute. We'd request an HTTPS example since most folks will want a TLS method of connection! Since the board is Arduino and Stemma QT compatible, we were able to connect an OLED and extend the example to display the HTTP-gotten data to the OLED - it only took us 10 minutes to install everything for Arduino library support and extend the code which is amazingly fast! You know what else is really fast? Digi-Key shipping for the AVR-IoT Cellular Mini Development Board, cause it's in stock right now! (https://www.digikey.com/short/bn7mp80w) Order today and you'll be connecting to the LTE cellular network by tomorrow afternoon.

    We blogged about this cool project that converts a PC joystick to USB https://github.com/necroware/gameport-adapter and we realized there's probably millions of these old joysticks folks may be wanting to update or interface with. So we threw together a quick PC Joystick QT breakout! I'm using seesaw cause we need analog inputs as well as digital and once you have ADC + GPIO in an I2C project we feel we're best off going with a microcontroller. We also wrapped up an ancient PCF8574 https://www.digikey.com/short/7bvpbqvt QT breakout and wrote a library for it. The PCF8574 is a very wierd little chip which does 'bidirectional gpio expansion' but without a direction port, how's it do that?     This week's EYE ON NPI is very adaptable - it's CUI Inc's 30 W Desktop USB PD Adapters (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cui/30-w-desktop-usb-pd-adapters) which have up to 30 Watts of output with a variety of voltages, so they can be used in multiple product designs to make your inventory and procurement simpler! These power adapters will help you transition your products from DC jacks to USB C, which has power negotiation all in one consistent, well-recognized connector. We've covered DC plug adapters on EYE ON NPI before. Just about every product in the world uses these ubiquitous 'barrel jack' connectors for power (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/ac-dc-desktop-wall-adapters/130): often 5.5mm outer diameter / 2.1 or 2.5mm inner (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-devices/PJ-003A/96969). These connectors are so popular that they don't really 'mean' anything when you see them other than "power connector". There's no inherent voltage, polarity or current capability that is indicated by a barrel jack. You could have 5VDC center-positive 5A adapter (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-inc/SDM36-5-U-P5/8547877) or you could have a 9VAC 300mA adapter, all with the same connector. Only by careful reading and matching of the labels can you verify which adapter you have matches with which product - and if you lose the adapter it could be a real pain to get a replacement. That's where USB Type C has a lot of potential to improve and simplify this issue: folks end up being scared to toss out their power adapters because you never know when you need it or what the matching devices is, even years later. If, instead, we had one power adapter and cable that would be usable for any product, that would deliver the right voltage, we could mix and match adapters without worrying about under-powering or over-volting. A lot of mobile devices have started to go this way with USB mini or micro B ports, cell phones being the most popular: all USB ports are basically 5V 1A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-inc/SWI5-5-N-I38/5287192) and if you have something running off of a Lipoly battery, this is plenty to keep you topped up. But for larger devices, ones with displays or motors, or larger battery packs, 5W (or 10W on a fancy high current adapter) is not going to be enough. And you don't necessarily want 5V input! If you have a backlight that requires 12V or a battery pack that is 8.4V it's going to be expensive and wasteful to try and boost 5V USB up to 12V. USB C's Power Delivery spec is a great solution: it can provide anywhere from 5V to 20V DC, at up to 100W if the power adapter is chunky enough. CUI's awesome blog has a great post about the power delivery specifications with clear text and diagrams (https://www.cui.com/blog/usb-type-c-pd-and-pps) for more info - in particular watch out that you have a current limitation or 3A or 5A at each voltage so you'll never be able to get 5V 20A = 100W. Instead you'd get 20V at 5A. However, if your voltage / wattage use case lies within the PD requirements, you're good to go! You can use a standard USB C connector (https://www.cuidevices.com/catalog/interconnect/connectors/usb-connectors), standard USB C power cables (https://www.cuidevices.com/catalog/interconnect/cable-assemblies/usb-cables?[0].sn=Connector%201&[0].sv=Type%20C%20Plug) - all available from CUI and the CUI 30 W Desktop USB PD Adapter (https://www.digikey.com/short/v0f7fqm2) as the power supply. Best of all, Digi-Key has tons of CUI 30 W Desktop USB PD Adapters (https://www.digikey.com/short/v0f7fqm2) in stock, the version we're linking to comes with a USA power cable, but they also sell a version without a cable (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-inc./SDI30C-Q-UTB-CUB/16376426) so you can swap out with a UK, EU or other wall plug.     Hey it's still a chip shortage - here's what we did this week to help manage it! First up, our order of atmega328p's from over a year ago got bumped to late 2023 and at this point we may not even get till 2024. but we wanted to see if we could get a few products back in stock like the feather 328p or metro mini. we did find some atmega328-mmh's in stock at Digi-Key and yoink'ed em. these are non-P type so they are higher power usage and they're 28QFN not 32QFN soooo we need to respin boards but at least we have a couple hundred on hand! Also, as an FYI, LSM9DS1 which we noticed was NRND last week is not officially EOL, we'll be recommending an LSM6DSxx IMU + MMC56x3 magnetometer. CUI's awesome blog has a great post about the power delivery specifications with clear text and diagrams (https://www.cui.com/blog/usb-type-c-pd-and-pps) for more info - in particular watch out that you have a current limitation or 3A or 5A at each voltage so you'll never be able to get 5V 20A = 100W. Instead you'd get 20V at 5A. However, if your voltage / wattage use case lies within the PD requirements, you're good to go!
