People Solve Problems
Leading from Within: Krista Smith on Leadership at Sandia National Labs

People Solve Problems

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2025 23:54

Krista Smith, Director, Project Management Center of Excellence at Sandia National Laboratories, joins Jamie Flinchbaugh on the People Solve Problems podcast to share insights on leadership development and organizational management. As an executive at the nation's largest national security engineering laboratory, Krista leads Sandia's project management capability while drawing from her extensive experience in facilities, infrastructure, supply chain, and business operations. Krista discusses what she calls "the inner game of leadership" - a concept focusing on self-care, positive self-talk, and personal preparation that allows leaders to show up authentically for their teams. She explains that early in her leadership journey, she recognized the need for tools to manage multiple challenges while caring for herself. This awareness led her to explore how leaders can authentically engage with their teams without sacrificing their own wellbeing. One of Krista's hardest leadership lessons has been learning to be gentle with herself when making mistakes. She references the Buddhist concept of "the second arrow" - how we often compound our suffering by criticizing ourselves for our initial errors. Krista shares how she's learned to recognize and interrupt her negative self-talk patterns, particularly when her natural tendency to move quickly conflicts with her organization's collaborative culture. When addressing leadership improvement, Krista explains her methodical approach to organizational development. She maintains a "someday maybe" list of potential improvements and assesses organizations against a baseline system that includes prioritization, service delivery, quality assurance, and people management. This balanced approach allows her to address immediate concerns while maintaining focus on long-term development. Krista offers valuable insights on management operating systems, emphasizing the importance of predictability and stability. She focuses on managing energy versus time and creating predictable meeting cadences that allow team members to rely on consistent anchor points throughout their week. When facilitating problem-solving sessions, she carefully observes engagement levels and adapts her approach based on team dynamics. Working with highly analytical colleagues at Sandia National Laboratories has taught Krista to accommodate different thinking styles. She visualizes these styles in a multi-dimensional grid, considering factors like learning preferences (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and strategic orientation (tactical vs. big picture). This awareness allows her to design problem-solving approaches that engage diverse thinkers. As advice for early-career professionals, Krista emphasizes the importance of understanding your personal "why." She reflects that outward signs of success haven't provided the satisfaction she once expected and encourages focusing on finding meaning in the work itself rather than always chasing the next achievement. A 13-year-old boy faces murder charges for allegedly swerving a stolen car to kill a cyclist — a 63-year-old Sandia National Laboratory physicist on his morning bike ride — at the urging of two other boys, one of whom is only 11 years old and was reportedly waving a gun. According to Albuquerque police, the deadly crash happened around 4:40 a.m. on May 29, 2022, near Moon Street and Atkinson Avenue. Investigators say the 13-year-old intentionally veered off the road and struck the cyclist, identified as 63-year-old Scott Dwight Habermehl, who was riding to work at Sandia. A chilling video that surfaced on social media last month and was later obtained by police allegedly captures the moments leading to the impact. As the young driver prepared to ram the cyclist, a 15-year-old passenger can be heard saying “Just bump him, brah,” while the 11-year-old front-seat passenger waved a handgun and laughed. Authorities say the 13-year-old accelerated and hit Habermehl, killing him and then fleeing the scene. Investigators initially struggled to solve the fatal hit-and-run until receiving an anonymous tip and discovering that the suspects' phones — seized from a separate investigation — contained video evidence. Police later identified the trio as 13-year-old Johnathan Overbay, 15-year-old William Garcia, and an 11-year-old boy who remains unnamed in official reports, though local media identified him as Messiah Hayes. Overbay was apprehended Monday on charges that include murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of an accident involving great bodily harm or death, and unlawful possession of a handgun. Police continue to search for Garcia, who faces the same charges. The 11-year-old is too young to be charged with murder but remains under investigation for other possible offenses. Habermehl had worked as a physicist at Sandia National Laboratory for nearly three decades. His family recalled his daily 25-mile bike commute, which he preferred to driving in traffic. “This case is an appalling and heartbreaking reminder of the serious juvenile crime crisis we face in New Mexico,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. “Our lack of tools to properly address it is tragic.” Overbay has also been linked to other crimes prior to the deadly crash, including assault and breaking and entering, according to local reports. Police say the 11-year-old suspect likewise has a significant criminal history, involving alleged shootings and burglaries. Charges for the 15-year-old suspect — who is still at large — and the possibility of either juvenile suspect being tried as an adult remain under review. According to the Interstate Commission for Juveniles, children as young as 14 can have their cases transferred to adult court. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The Mixed Waste Landfill at Sandia National Laboratories is a 2.6-acre dump that is leaking radioactive, hazardous and toxic wastes from unlined pits and trenches that threaten Albuquerque's drinking water aquifer. The public has been asking the New Mexico Environment Department for nearly 25 years to order Sandia to excavate the dump. Evidence of migrating contamination, such as the detection of volatile organic compounds 400 feet below the dump in 2015, verifies the public's concern. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ccnsupdate/support

Astronomy Daily - The Podcast: S03E162Welcome to Astronomy Daily, your source for the latest space and Astronomy news. I'm your host, Anna. And we've got an exciting lineup of stories for you today. From innovative methods to protect our planet from potential asteroid impacts to groundbreaking discoveries on the surface of Mars, we'll be exploring the cutting edge of space exploration and research. We'll also be catching up with astronauts returning from the International Space Station, looking ahead to upcoming missions, and even delving into some cosmic history that might have affected Earth's climate millions of years ago. Strap in and get ready for a journey across the solar system and beyond as we bring you up to speed on the most fascinating developments in Astronomy and space science.Highlights:- Asteroid Deflection with X-rays: In a groundbreaking development, scientists have proposed a new method to protect our planet from potential asteroid impacts. A recent study published in Nature Physics suggests that powerful x-rays could be an effective way to divert asteroids on collision courses with Earth. Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories in the USA conducted lab-based experiments firing x-ray pulses at small rock samples, mimicking the effects of x-rays generated by nuclear explosions in space. This method could potentially steer asteroids up to 4 km in diameter away from Earth, offering a faster and more cost-effective alternative to other proposed strategies.- NASA Astronauts Return: In a triumphant return from the cosmos, NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson and her two crewmates have safely touched down on Earth after an incredible 184-day journey in space. The Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft made a picture-perfect landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan. Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko set an all-time record with a cumulative 1011 Daily in space across five missions. This mission exemplifies ongoing international cooperation in space exploration.- SpaceX Crew-9 Mission: NASA and SpaceX are gearing up for an exciting milestone in their ongoing partnership. The Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station is set to launch this Thursday from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Featuring booster B085 on its second flight, the Falcon 9 rocket will carry the Crew Dragon spacecraft named Freedom. NASA's Tyler Nick Haig and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov will be the only two astronauts on board. Weather permitting, liftoff is targeted for 02:05 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.- Perseverance Rover's Martian Discovery: NASA's Perseverance rover has made an intriguing discovery on Mars, spotting a rock nicknamed Freya Castle with striking black and white stripes. This rock's texture is completely different from anything previously observed in Jezero Crater, suggesting it may have rolled down from a higher location. This discovery could provide new information about Mars' geological history and processes.- MAVEN's Decade of Exploration: NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has reached an incredible milestone, celebrating a decade of exploration in Mars' upper atmosphere. MAVEN has revealed how solar storms increase atmospheric erosion, transforming Mars from a potentially habitable world to the cold, arid planet we see today. The spacecraft has also identified a new type of aurora on Mars and provided invaluable insights into Mars' climate history.- Earth's Journey Through Interstellar Clouds: Researchers have calculated that Earth and our entire solar system may have passed through two dense interstellar clouds approximately two and seven million years ago. These cosmic encounters could have compressed our heliosphere, exposing Earth more directly to the interstellar medium and potentially altering our planet's climate. Such events could have led to an increase in hydrogen levels and the formation of global noctilucent clouds, possibly plunging Earth into an ice age.For more space news, be sure to visit our website at astronomydaily.io. And we are in Roskilde, Denmark at the 5th International Symposium on Leading Edge Erosion and Wind Turbine Blades. And I'm here with Nicholas Gaudern of PowerCurve and Rodolfo Meleiro of Arthwind. So we have a world perspective here on leading edge erosion. We have Europe. Brazil, which is a lot of wind energy there. Thank you for being here and I'll try to cover the America as best I can. So this has been a really interesting conference. It's held at DTU which is, this is a wind energy center. So this conference has been organized and it has international flavor to it. We saw presentations from India, Denmark, obviously there were German. Yeah. Presentations, Japan, China u. S. Sandia has been here. So there's a paper from Cornell today. So there's been all sorts of people worried about leading edge erosion. And I think it's a really hot topic. And that's the reason why I came to, to see the action here, because there's. So much that we don't know. And I figured if anybody does know it's a DTU, so it's time to get over there and to find out what's going on. So this whole podcast is really to discuss what we have seen and heard and try to figure out what the state of the industry is and where it needs to go. And just first impressions, really One of my first impressions, I'll just start. One of my first impressions was we have a long way to go. Yes, that we don't know a lot. Yeah, and I wish I had been shocked so far So we're at the end of day two and day one was pretty intensive on this or the mathematical Computational side. Nicholas Gaudern: We don't know a lot. We've had a lot more materials as well today So I think it's nice that we have that really cross disciplinary approach here. So we've got materials. We've got structures. We've got data We've got metrology, meteorology, aerodynamics So it is bringing all of these expert field together which I think is really important. There's also the risk that there's a lot of noise, because obviously there's issues to be resolved in all of these different fields. And then, it may make it a little bit harder to focus on what really matters I think. Allen Hall: There's a lot of data smoothing that's happening at the minute, from what I can tell, and different approaches to data smoothing, and I'm not even sure. Everybody has settled on that. Nicholas Gaudern: No, and I think we had like a discussion at the end of the day yesterday, like a shouting across the lecture theatre kind of discussion at the end of the sessions. And I think what was clear is there is more of a consensus about the AEP losses that we're seeing, which is important. And that's really helpful because I think if you start seeing big scary numbers 15, losses, sure, those might exist in a very extreme scenario on a very particular type of turbine, but I really want to make the point here that is not the norm at all. We wouldn't have an industry if 20 percent AEP eve...

In addition, he is a published songwriter for Disnew Records, a screenplay writer for Sojourn Entertainment, a Coast Guard charter captain, a PADI diver, an adventurer, and now an author of an intelligent well-researched thriller.  Since his 2021 debut as an indie author, Guy has released three pulse-pounding thrillers inspired by true stories, actual technologies, true global politics, and history.  The true event of when the Ethiopian Ark of the Covenant was stolen and sold on the black markets inspired the Lask Ark following a massacre of 750 men, women, and children in January 2021. Deep research into AI, cyber-espionage, politics, history, religion, prophecy, and politics often provides further motivation. When Guy discovered through an obscure AP article a spy program had escaped the Lawrence Livermore labs at Sandia, a well-known HSA spy lab, two FBI agents showed up at his door. In Guy's interview, he will share what he discovered and why it is necessary to help you understand current and future events. You will want to pass this on to bring awareness and prepare us for what is ahead.   Click here to buy The SNO Chronicles are inspired by the true story of a program that escaped the Lawrence Livermore Labs at Sandia, a cryptology and signals lab for the CIA and NSA. The program was never recaptured. Code named SLVIA (Sophisticated Language Virtual Intelligence Algorithms), and program was designed as a web-crawling virtual spy under a joint CIA-NSA program to create a digital backdoor. Equipped with early versions of deep fake technology as well as other espionage, data gathering, and analysis functions, prototypes of the SLVIA toolset were stolen during the 2016 Russian CIA hack. Over the past decade, SLVIA has formed a network of millions of human connections across the globe known as the SNO (Spy Net Online). Men and women from all political, professional, and religious backgrounds are willing to share what they know and seek the truth behind the headlines. From political and corporate leaders to taxi drivers and hookers SNO members connect through SLVIA completely unaware of other members. Set in a post-coronavirus world with a crippled world economy, rising social and political corruption, and unrest with a global food crisis in the third world, and where real-world AI integrates into digital identity, law enforcement, military and cyber warfare, political corruption, and religious apostasy when SLVIA decodes end time prophecies to interpret world events through a prophetic lens with a frighteningly accurate real-world perspective. During 2020 the US, Russia, and China declined to abide by the international Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS) protocol which would restrict any AI from making a kill decision without the validation of a human operator. During 2020, Russia demonstrated a hypersonic missile that could evade current missile defenses. Political corruption and division in the US have destabilized the world's greatest democracy. China, Russia, and Iran have formed an alliance designed to weaken the Western alliance's grip on the world economy and shift power to the east. A decade of hacks of US consumer, corporate, and government information has been weaponized into an artificial intelligence internet virus that can be trained and targeted to hack access and disable connected systems. The 2020 Solar Winds hack was the tip of the iceberg of a coming cyber conflict.

Dale Peterson was recently interviewed by Jay Johnson of Sandia and Tom Tansy of the Sunspec Alliance as part of their distributed energy resources (DER) Sunspec webinar series. We covered a lot of issues and Dale was not shy in throwing out some analysis and opinions. After 5 minutes discussing the S4x24 ticket process, the topics discussed:   How DER will deal with the complex, large number of users and stakeholders PKI environment. The Sunspec device security specification and the benefits of a limited, key set of security controls. What is the role of government regulation to solve DER security issues? The potential power of the utility companies to levy requirements and be a choke point for access. The Patch Act, FDA and DER. shift left and product liability due to security flaws and more

This week I had the pleasure to talk with AJ Beach. He is a Sandia Prep and UNM graduate. He is an athlete performance therapist and has helped many people get through injuries and back to performing the way they are comfortable with. We talk about how he got into running and competing at the New Mexico State meet. He talked about some of the expectations and how that can be a burden when you are not performing the way you want or are expecting to. We also talk about how that disappointment helped him find something he became more passionate about. We talk briefly about his brother, Curtis Beach, and how AJ never really felt in competition with him and was able to do his own thing. That can be a difficult thing for many families, so it was good to hear about their relationship and the positives. AJ also talks about the specifics of what he does and who he works with. He has worked with high school athletes to Olympic caliber athletes, from pets to grandparents. He truly wants to help anyone he can. If you are interested in seeing AJ, you can check out his website here. It has been a crazy beginning to the summer for me, but I am happy to have some guests lined up. I'm also excited for a new cross country season. There is a wonderful new group of athletes at my school and no doubt around the state. I'm excited to see what everyone is able to do this Fall. Hopefully everyone is taking care of their bodies, hydrating, and preparing well for any upcoming races or challenges. So keep on moving, listen to your body, and keep running, New Mexico.
