This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! On June 10th, 1912, the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, became the site of one of the most horrifying crimes in American history. Inside a modest family home, eight people—including two young sisters and their friends—were savagely butchered as they slept. To this day, the Villisca Axe Murders remain one of the nation's darkest unsolved mysteries. The brutality of the crime stunned the town and echoed far beyond Iowa's borders. Some believed a traveling preacher came to Villisca to deliver vengeance in the most violent way imaginable. Others whisper that something far more sinister may have taken control of the man who wielded the axe. With no modern forensic science available at the time, speculation and fear spread like wildfire. The case became the stuff of legend—and haunting. Today, more than a century later, the Villisca Axe Murder House still stands, and visitors claim the energy within its walls has never left. Disembodied voices. Phantom footsteps. Unseen hands brushing across the skin. Many investigators believe the victims' spirits still linger, while others suspect the evil that fueled the massacre remains in residence, feeding off fear. In this chilling conversation, we sit down with Dane Eckelman to dive into the history, the lore, and the paranormal experiences tied to this infamous house of horror. Was this simply the work of a madman? Or did something much darker grip the soul of the killer, pushing him to commit an act so depraved that its echoes still reverberate through time? This is Part Two of our conversation. #VilliscaAxeMurderHouse #TrueCrime #ParanormalPodcast #RealGhostStories #HauntedHistory #EvilLivesHere #UnsolvedMysteries #GhostStories #DarkHistory #TheGraveTalks Love real ghost stories? This is a CLASSIC EPISODE! On March 3rd, 1928, the town of Williamson, West Virginia, celebrated the opening of a state-of-the-art facility: the Williamson Hospital. For 60 years, it served as the heart of the community. Within its walls, countless lives began, countless lives ended, and unthinkable traumas unfolded. Generations of families were touched by its legacy. In 1988, the hospital closed its doors for good. The patients left. The staff moved on. The hallways fell silent. Or so it seemed. Today, the building is known as The Old Hospital on College Hill, and while its days as a functioning medical facility are over, the energy of the past has never truly gone away. Visitors, paranormal investigators, and staff all report that the hospital remains active—just not in the way it once was. Spirits of doctors, nurses, and patients are said to still roam the halls, carrying out their duties as if time never stopped. Footsteps echo in empty corridors. Disembodied voices whisper through examination rooms. Some claim to have seen figures in white coats moving through the wards, still working to “help the sick.” Others feel an oppressive sadness in the rooms where trauma unfolded, or hear faint cries of patients long gone. Now open to the public, The Old Hospital on College Hill offers both historical tours and paranormal investigations, giving visitors a chance to experience firsthand what lingers in this haunted landmark. On this episode of The Grave Talks, we speak with Tonya Webb, co-owner and manager of the hospital, to uncover its history, its hauntings, and why so many believe the building never truly closed its doors. Some hospitals heal the living. This one serves both the living and the dead. Episode 156In this episode, I delve into three factors that facilitate spiritual abuse, especially within the experience of many Catholics. Reflecting on a personal experience during a silent retreat, I explore how complex trauma, disembodied faith, and cultural influences create environments where spiritual abuse can easily occur. I share insights on recognising these dynamics and discuss the importance of becoming trauma-informed to foster authentic spiritual maturity and embodied faith. This conversation aims to support individuals on their journey of healing and integration, helping them understand the systemic and personal elements contributing to spiritual abuse.Watch this recording on YouTube.Follow me on my Instagram account @animann for more material on the integration journey and subscribe to my monthly reflections on Begin Again.CHAPTER MARKERS00:00 Introduction06:02 Three Factors in the Set-Up for Spiritual Abuse11:25 Cultural Influences on Spirituality14:20 Silent Retreat Experience25:48 Understanding Spiritual Maturity28:05 The Role of Dreams in Spiritual Direction28:57 Unknowingly Primed for Spiritual Abuse31:30 Complex Trauma and Authority36:25 Disembodied Faith43:21 Recognising and Addressing Spiritual Abuse49:43 Final Reflections and EncouragementSupport the showSUBSCRIBE | FOLLOW | SUPPORTSocial Media:Follow Ann Yeong on Instagram or Facebook.Newsletter:Subscribe to Begin Again for Ann's updates and reflections.Support the Show:Monthly Support (starting at USD$3)One-time DonationLeave a Review:If this podcast has blessed you, please leave a review by clicking here.
West Hill Manor in Burlington, New Jersey, is a historic treasure—one built between 1797 and 1799 in rare Federal style. But this stately home is more than a museum of early American architecture—it's a place where history refuses to stay silent. Psychic medium and paranormal investigator Beth O'Brien joins us on The Grave Talks to share what she's experienced while volunteering at West Hill. A passionate advocate for its preservation, Beth has seen and felt things most visitors never do—things that suggest the spirits of West Hill are still very much present. Within its walls, the cries of Susanna Emlen may still linger. She underwent one of the earliest known breast cancer surgeries in the United States—performed without anesthesia—and survived. Many believe she never truly left the room where it happened. Then there's Eliza Gurney, the manor's second owner, whose deep friendship with President Abraham Lincoln left such an impression that one of her letters was allegedly found in his coat the night of his assassination. But beyond the historical intrigue, modern paranormal reports make it clear—West Hill is more than a relic. Disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, unexplained touches, and even the sound of gunfire echo through the halls, suggesting something unseen remains active within. Beth O'Brien takes us deep inside the spiritual heartbeat of the house—and why it continues to mystify everyone who steps inside. This is Part Two of our conversation. WBSRocks: Business Growth with ERP and Digital Transformation
Send us a textEngineered AI has achieved remarkable milestones, yet fundamental questions remain about whether it can ever reason, think, or truly understand like the human mind. Current systems, while powerful, expose the limitations of today's technology, particularly the persistent neuroscience gap—the divide between brain research and cognitive psychology that prevents machines from replicating human-like cognition. This gap is compounded by the looming energy challenge, as the massive computational demands of AI training strain global infrastructure, in stark contrast to the human brain's ability to operate on the energy equivalent of a 20W light bulb. These realities underscore the growing promise of neurocomputing, which seeks to emulate the brain's structure and efficiency, offering a potential breakthrough in building systems that are not only more intelligent but also vastly more energy-efficient.In this episode, Sam Gupta engages in a LinkedIn live session with Michael Azoff, Chief Analyst, Omdia, in a live LinkedIn session to discuss LLMs: disembodied AI - it's not human-like AI as we imagine it.Background Soundtrack: Away From You – Mauro SommFor more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs. rocks or elevatiq.com. Send us a textIn this episode of Frontiers of Faith, Katie Ruvalcaba and Monsignor Roger Landry discuss the significance of having a missionary Pope, the challenges of maintaining human connection in a digital age, and the role of AI in modern communication. They explore the importance of embodiment in human relationships, the epidemic of loneliness exacerbated by technology, and how to engage with those who may not believe in the soul. Monsignor Landry also reflects on the legacy of Fulton J. In a world where communication is increasingly filtered through screens and algorithms, this message explores the tension between God's embodied design for connection and our disembodied digital lives. Through personal stories, biblical truth, and cultural insight, it reveals how technology can both bridge and break the communion and fruitfulness we were created for.
In our age of digitization, our sense of touch has clearly been demoted. For thinkers like Aristotle and Nietzsche, the cost is enormous!
For nearly three decades, he cleaned an athletic club alone through the quietest—and creepiest—hours of the night. But after a kid's lock-in brought a Ouija board into the nursery, something changed. Disembodied voices, doors opening on their own, whispers in the tennis courts, and one ghost who helpfully warned about an overflowing whirlpool—this isn't your average gym horror story. In this episode, we dive into the strange happenings at a fitness center where the spirits may not be getting their reps in, but they're definitely not resting either. After a divorce uproots their family, three brothers move with their overworked dad into a ramshackle Victorian in tiny Doylestown, Ohio—only to discover the same shadow-man that haunted their previous house waiting in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Disembodied whispers, phantom screams that save them from a house fire, and furniture that hurls itself at terrified guests turn everyday life into a gauntlet of dread. Violence spikes, moods darken, and even a trip to Mom's apartment reveals more apparitions. Decades later, one brother returns and feels an unmistakable command: leave. Tucked away in the heart of Springfield, Missouri, stands a towering limestone fortress with a past as layered and mysterious as its walls, the Pythian Castle. Built in 1913 by the secretive Knights of Pythias, it was never meant for rituals or brotherhood meetings. Instead, it was a home for aging members nearing life's end and orphaned children left behind by tragedy. But that was only the beginning. During World War II, the U.S. military took over, transforming the castle into a rehabilitation center and a holding site for prisoners of war. Rumors of confinement, hidden tunnels, and unspoken wartime horrors still linger in the basement shadows. More than a century later, the castle still stands—and, it seems, so do its former residents. Disembodied voices ripple through the marble lobby. Doors slam where no one walks. Children's laughter echoes in its halls, as does a woman's greeting, but who, and where, is she? Grab your sage & your skepticism, because today we're getting a broader understanding of doppelgängers, mimics, and the moments that make us question reality. What happens when we see someone who isn't there? When someone (or something) else doesn't just look like you but mimics you? Is it a form of hysteria messing with our minds? A glitch in our brains and in linear time or something more sinister? We've been documenting doubles for thousands of years, science must know something, right? Right? In episode 739: Gateway To Narnia, Matthew joins to share his chilling experiences with a mysterious stretch of land that defied time and reality. What began as a childhood hideout—a secluded patch of woods marked by an old fallen tree—soon revealed itself to be something much more. Strange silences would descend without warning. Disembodied voices whispered from the trees. And then, the impossible happened—chopped-down trees and cleared brush inexplicably restored overnight, as if his presence had never disturbed the land at all. But the deeper he and his friends ventured, the stranger it became. A glowing man in white appeared only to vanish behind a single tree. A pale, ghostly boy with hollow eyes sent an unspoken warning that shook Matthew to his core. And as the years passed, the experiences only grew darker—mysterious footsteps on rooftops, music from nowhere, and a bizarre encounter with two anachronistic police officers in an untouched vintage patrol car. What was this place? A portal? A realm shift? A supernatural crossing point between worlds? And if so—who, or what, was watching him from the other side? Does the richness of your world expand or shrink in direct proportion to how much of your life is digitally mediated? My guest argues that by defaulting to digital mediation—where technology filters and facilitates our interactions—we are trading away the richness of real, embodied experience. And in doing so, we risk losing—without even noticing—the very moments that make us happy and resilient. Are we shrinking our capacity for a full, messy, exhilarating experience of being human? Christine Rosen is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where she explores American history, society, culture, and the impact of technology on human behavior. She is a columnist for Commentary magazine, a fellow at the University of Virginia's Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, and a senior editor at The New Atlantis. Previously a distinguished visiting scholar at the Library of Congress, Christine has authored several books, including The Extinction of Experience, Esquire's Best Book of 2024, which serves as the foundation for our discussion. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and many other major outlets. She holds a PhD in history from Emory University, a third-degree black belt in Aikido, and teaches martial arts where she lives in Washington, D.C. On the show, we discuss Christine's book The Extinction of Experience and a variety of topics, including: Our shared interest in Aikido and martial arts The thesis of her book How technology mediates experiences Impacts on basic social interactions The concept of “ambiguous loss” Serendipity and chance encounters How human virtue is created Public spaces and the decline of social awareness Digital voyeurism The physical resonance of IRL events Self-isolation and the “loneliness epidemic” Enjoy! In Episode 396 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Christine Rosen about her book, “Extinction of Experience: Being Human in a Disembodied World,” which explores the cultural and emotional shifts that accompany our embrace of technology and its effects on our experience of life as embodied human beings. Christine is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where she focuses on American history, society and culture, and technology and human behavior. Rosen is also a monthly columnist for Commentary Magazine, one of the cohosts of the popular Commentary Podcast. Demetri and Christine spend the first hour of their conversation focused on the philosophical and moral questions that arise from our unreserved embrace of virtual realities and mediated experiences. They explore questions about the nature of reality, how embodiment shapes experience, and whether the virtualization of our lives is the natural progression of our interplay with technology or if it represents something fundamentally different and profoundly immoral about the world we are building. In the second hour, Kofinas and Rosen discuss the effect that these technologies and the logic that animates them have on our sense of self, agency, and freedom. They explore how time spent inside virtual spaces hosted on large tech platforms may be contributing to the rising levels of depression, anxiety, antisociality, and other mental and personality disorders that we may or may not recognize in each other and in ourselves. They also discuss what can and should be done, both at an individual and societal level, to begin to address the problem. Join Host Lyle Perez for a chilling finale to the Haunted America series as he explores the haunted history of Washington, D.C., on Halloween night. As the center of political power, the nation's capital holds layers of dark secrets, historic tragedies, and spectral presences. From the halls of the White House to the eerie streets of Lafayette Square, D.C. is alive with ghostly tales that reveal a side of history rarely discussed. Grab a warm drink, dim the lights, and get ready for a journey into the capital's haunted sites. Featured Locations: The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20500 Home to more than just presidents, the White House hosts famous spirits like Abraham Lincoln, who's been seen by countless staff and guests. Queen Wilhelmina even fainted upon seeing his apparition. Dolley Madison is rumored to protect the Rose Garden, while Abigail Adams' ghost has been seen in the East Room. Public tours offer a glimpse into the residence, though ghostly encounters are never guaranteed. The Octagon House 1799 New York Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 This unique mansion, built in 1801, is haunted by the spirits of two Tayloe daughters who fell to their deaths in the staircase. Visitors report hearing footsteps, doors slamming, and feeling watched, especially in the ballroom. The house is open as a museum, inviting visitors to learn about its tragic history. The Capitol Building First St SE, Washington, D.C. 20004 The U.S. Capitol is haunted by the mysterious “Demon Cat,” a ghostly omen of disaster, and by John Quincy Adams, who collapsed and died in the building. Cold spots, whispers, and eerie figures are common, particularly in the rotunda. Guided tours provide access to this historical—and haunted—monument. Lafayette Square Across from the White House, Lafayette Square's dark past is marked by murder and scandal. The ghost of Philip Barton Key II, murdered by Congressman Daniel Sickles, is said to roam here. Shadowy figures and phantom gunshots disturb this otherwise serene park, making it a must-visit for thrill-seekers. The Old Stone House 3051 M St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Dating back to 1765, the Old Stone House is D.C.'s oldest unchanged structure. It's haunted by “George,” a spectral carpenter, and a child who tugs at visitors' clothing. Guests report feeling cold hands and hearing whispers, adding to its allure as a museum with deep-rooted mysteries. The National Theatre 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20004 Known as “The Theatre of Presidents,” the National Theatre is haunted by the “Lady in White,” seen backstage and in the audience. Disembodied laughter and footsteps heighten its ghostly charm. Patrons attending performances may find themselves in the presence of D.C.'s most dedicated spectral audience. The Exorcist Steps, Georgetown 36th St NW & Prospect St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Made famous by The Exorcist, these narrow steps hold an ominous presence. Many report feeling watched or hearing footsteps echoing behind them, especially at night. It's a notorious location for those seeking real-life frights in the heart of Georgetown. The Hay-Adams Hotel 800 16th St NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 Overlooking Lafayette Square, the Hay-Adams Hotel is haunted by the spirit of Clover Adams, whose presence is felt through cold spots, flickering lights, and the scent of lavender. The fourth floor is particularly active, drawing guests who hope for a ghostly encounter during their stay. The Smithsonian Castle 1000 Jefferson Dr SW, Washington, D.C. 20560 James Smithson, the Smithsonian's founder, is said to haunt this Gothic structure. His spirit has been seen in the hallways, with footsteps and ghostly whispers adding to the building's aura. Visitors can explore the castle's history and perhaps feel Smithson's presence watching over his legacy. The Congressional Cemetery 1801 E St SE, Washington, D.C. 20003 This historic cemetery is home to prominent figures, and visitors often report eerie encounters, including the spirit of Clara Barton. Ghost tours reveal the haunted side of this iconic cemetery, with flickering lights and murmurs from beyond.
