Your healthcare benefits could be quietly draining $4,000 per employee every year while your broker profits from the status quo. Donovan Pyle, CEO of Health Compass Consulting and author of Fixing Healthcare, exposes the hidden incentive conflicts that cost US employers $325 billion in annual waste. Built for entrepreneurs scaling their business while protecting what they have built, this episode covers: why fiduciary-based advice is the most critical shift in benefits strategy, the two broker questions every founder must ask, how healthcare analytics becomes a competitive weapon for talent retention, and why better coverage and lower costs are not a trade-off. Pyle reveals how one organization saved $3.6 million by replacing a single vendor.  No act of Congress required.

In the summer of 1997, fear spread across the campus of Arizona State University as reports surfaced of women being attacked while walking home alone at night. Students were warned to stay alert, travel in groups, and avoid being out after dark. But no one expected the danger to strike in broad daylight. When 21-year-old Fiona Yu was found brutally murdered inside her own apartment, investigators described the crime as a frenzied blitz attack. With little physical evidence and only the belief that Fiona may have known her killer, police scrambled to stop whoever was responsible before they struck again. Then, two more women were attacked in eerily similar ways, raising fears that a predator was targeting women near campus.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com12 News (KPNX). 1. "Fueling America: 250 Years of Energy Innovation"Tom Hall introduces the Institute for Energy Research's special project celebrating America's 250th anniversary by highlighting the nation's leadership in energy innovation. Key points include:The U.S. has historically led in energy innovation (Drake well, Henry Ford, Wright brothers, first LNG terminal)Energy innovation has been a driver of progress, democracy, freedom, and prosperityThe project focuses on prominent figures and innovators in the energy sector throughout American history2. Property Rights and American Energy ExceptionalismA critical distinction is made about why the U.S. is uniquely positioned as an energy producer:American property owners own subsurface mineral rights, unlike most countries where governments own themThis uniquely American system of property rights, combined with the rule of law and common law system, has been fundamental to energy progressThis explains why the U.S. leads in shale production while other countries (Bulgaria, England, Germany) don't3. Iran Crisis and Geopolitical StrategyExtensive discussion of the current conflict with Iran, including:A 47-year struggle with a radical regime that finances terrorism through oil revenuesThe blockade strategy as a way to starve the government of revenue without ground warThe importance of preventing Iran from controlling the Strait of HormuzThe need for regime change (civilian government replacing the mullahs) for lasting successHow U.S. energy strength (shale revolution, LNG exports) enables this policy4. Global Energy Market RealignmentThe conversation explores how the geopolitical situation is reshaping global energy:OPEC is effectively dead as a controlling forceThe U.S. is now the "swing producer"Expected shifts in oil trade flows and relationshipsUAE's withdrawal from OPEC signals the organization's declinePotential strategic alliance between Saudi Arabia and Israel5. Trump Administration's Energy Policy ImpactDiscussion of how Trump's policies are reshaping energy regulation:Repeal of Chevron deference and the EPA's 2009 endangerment findingThese repeals dismantle the legal foundations of Obama and Biden energy restrictionsTrump is described as "American energy unleashed"Broader policy shifts including border control and NATO burden-sharing6. Venezuela's Energy RecoveryAnalysis of Venezuela's potential return as an oil producer:Venezuela previously produced 3+ million barrels per day before Maduro/ChavezExxonMobil is now exploring re-entry into the marketRecovery would supply Gulf refineries with heavy crudeThis would increase U.S. exports and reshape oil marketsBenefits would extend to Venezuelan people through economic improvement7. California's Energy CrisisDiscussion of California's self-inflicted energy problems:The state has transitioned from a major oil producer to being dependent on Middle East importsOne-party rule has created policies that drove out oil companies (Chevron, Valero)Climate policies have merely exported emissions rather than reducing them globallyTrump suspended the Jones Act to help alleviate the crisisThe state serves as a cautionary tale of poor energy policy8. Broader Geopolitical RealignmentThemes about shifting international relationships:The U.S. is becoming more naturally aligned with countries like India than FranceEuropean countries are moving toward authoritarian socialism and proving unreliable alliesThe Trump administration is reshuffling long-standing international arrangements (NATO, embassy moves, etc.)Focus on Western Hemisphere security (the "Don Roe doctrine")This podcast presents a comprehensive view of how energy policy, geopolitics, and innovation intersect to shape global affairs.Follow David on his Substack https://blackmon.substack.com/

Pyle emphasizes that the world is swimming in oil and dismisses "peak oil" theories, arguing instead that high prices are a result of political friction and infrastructure damage rather than a lack of resources. In this message, Pastor Tony tracks the expansion of the early church from Antioch to Philippi, marking the first time the gospel reached European soil. Drawing from Acts 15 and 16, he highlights how God uses "flawed human beings" and strategic missionary teams to carry the message of Jesus across 1,200 miles of diverse terrain. The sermon details the recruitment of young Timothy and the conversion of three very different individuals: the wealthy businesswoman Lydia, a freed slave girl, and a desperate Roman jailer.Subscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Download a copy of the Exodus JournalVisit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.comSubscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Visit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

As we roll into the midterms, the Democrats are already rolling out "Affordability" as a key battle cry. Well, the facts show that the average blue state pays an estimated 37% more for electricity than the average red state. This podcast went out on the Energy Impacts Podcast with David Blackmon and the Energy News Beat Podcast with Stu Turley. Tom Pyle, the CEO of the Institute for Energy Research, lays out the article linked below, and it is very clear. Energy Policies account for the greatest increases in energy costs. The main topics discussed in this podcast are:1. Electricity and energy prices in the United States, particularly the higher costs in "blue" (Democratic-leaning) states compared to "red" (Republican-leaning) states. The transcript discusses a report by the Institute for Energy Research called "Blue States High Rates" that analyzes this trend.2. The impact of renewable energy policies and mandates, such as renewable portfolio standards, on electricity prices. The transcript argues that these policies, combined with the forced closure of traditional baseload power sources like coal and nuclear, have driven up costs in certain states.3. The challenges faced by states like California and New York in maintaining reliable and affordable energy supplies due to their aggressive climate and renewable energy policies. The transcript discusses issues like the closure of refineries, reliance on imported energy, and the difficulties in building new natural gas pipelines.4. The role of the federal government, particularly the Trump administration, in energy policy decisions and their impact on electricity prices. This includes topics like the EPA's endangerment finding and the potential benefits of rescinding it.5. Healthcare premiums keep rising, but plan quality often stays the same (or gets worse). In this conversation, Shaun Enders sits down with Donovan Pyle—CEO of Health Compass and author of Fixing Healthcare—to unpack why the employer-sponsored healthcare market functions the way it does. Donovan explains the "hidden supply chain" behind your healthcare spend, why broker incentives often conflict with employer outcomes, and how CEOs can start reclaiming wasted dollars by getting unbiased, fiduciary-aligned guidance and improving visibility into unit pricing. Key Topics Covered Why employer healthcare spend feels unstoppable, and why that belief is "trained" The healthcare supply chain and how lack of transparency drives waste How brokers were historically designed to function (and why incentives matter) Why networks can hide prices and distort the price/quality relationship The "discount off infinity" problem behind EOBs (Explanation of Benefits) Regulatory capture and why some states limit small-business options Certificate of Need ("CON") laws and how they restrict competition The shift toward fiduciary models (similar to what happened in retirement plans) Practical steps for CEOs: visibility, vendor stack, and unbiased advisory support Chapters / Timestamps (YouTube-style) 00:01 – Welcome + why this topic matters to Shaun (20 years of premium increases) 01:17 – The big numbers: employer-sponsored coverage, $1.3T spend, and the "waste" claim 02:03 – Why finance/HR teams aren't set up to understand healthcare procurement 03:54 – The broker dilemma: "the only voice you have" vs. conflicts of interest 05:29 – Why Donovan focuses on the employer-sponsored market (not Medicare/Medicaid) 07:27 – The origin story: the first U.S. insurance plan (1929) and what became Blue Cross 09:26 – Brokers as "retail distribution" and why costs rising helps the sell-side 11:59 – ACA, cost-plus dynamics, and why vertical integration changed the game 14:52 – Reframing healthcare: not one line item—a supply chain 16:31 – Shaun's parallel: higher education costs and "cracks in the veneer" 19:14 – The strategy universe expands once you get unbiased advice 21:21 – Cash pricing: why individuals sometimes get better pricing than big insurers 23:34 – Shaun's billing experience: allowed vs billed, even in integrated systems 25:35 – EOBs as marketing: "Island Speak" and the illusion of savings 29:40 – Small business reality in CA/NY/WA: limited options and why 34:50 – Certificate of Need ("CON") laws: regulating supply and blocking competition 42:07 – ACA subsidies: what's expiring and what the market may revert to 46:31 – The most practical step: get unbiased, fiduciary-aligned advice 51:16 – Parallels to financial services: commissions → fee-based fiduciary models 57:14 – Real example: PBM RFP leading to multi-million-dollar savings 59:18 – Bringing it back to purpose: time, meaning, and what drives Donovan 01:05:29 – Where to find Donovan + free executive summary roadmap https://assessment.healthcompassconsulting.com/tba Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9vEdj0XBOyI Connect with Shaun: www.CallTSG.com www.BusinessFinanceAndSoul.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaunenders/ People / Organizations Mentioned Donovan Pyle – CEO, Health Compass; author of Fixing Healthcare Validation Institute – referenced as a place to find fiduciary-based firms RAND Corporation (2021 study referenced) – cash pricing / employer pricing dynamics David Goldhill – author of Catastrophic Care (chapter: "Island Speak") Harris Rosen – Rosen Hotels (Orlando), example of long-term employer healthcare strategy Resources Mentioned Free executive summary + roadmap: FixingHealthcare.com Book: Fixing Healthcare (Donovan Pyle) Book: Catastrophic Care (David Goldhill) Disclaimer This episode discusses healthcare financing and benefits strategy from an employer perspective.
