A closer look at dark photon explanations of the excess radio background by Sandeep Kumar Acharya et al. on Tuesday 20 September The observed excess radio background has remained a puzzle for over a decade. A recent new physics solution involves dark matter that decays into dark photons in the presence of a thermal dark photon background. The produced non-thermal dark photon spectrum then converts into standard photons around the reionization era, yielding an approximate power-law radio excess with brightness temperature $T(nu)simeq nu^{-2.5}$ over a wide range of frequencies, $nu$. This simple power-law model comes intriguingly close to the current data, even if several ingredients are required to make it work. In this paper, we investigate some of the details of this model, showcasing the importance of individual effects. In particular, significant deviation from a power law are present at $nulesssim 100,{rm MHz}$ and $nugtrsim 1,{rm GHz}$. These effects result in improving the fit to data compared to a power-law spectrum, and may become testable in future observations. Performance Analysis Techniques for Real-time Broadband RFI Filtering System of uGMRT by Kaushal D. Buch et al. on Tuesday 20 September Electromagnetic radiation from human activities, known as man-made Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), adversely affects radio astronomy observations. In the vicinity of the Upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) array, the sparking on power lines is the major cause of interference at observing frequencies less than 800 MHz. A real-time broadband RFI detection and filtering system is implemented as part of the uGMRT wideband signal processing backend to mitigate the effect of broadband RFI. Performance analysis techniques used for testing and commissioning the system for observations in the beamformer and correlator modes of the uGMRT are presented. The concept and implementation of recording simultaneous unfiltered and filtered data along with data analysis and interpretation is illustrated using an example. For the beamformer mode, spectrogram, single spectral channel, and its Fourier transform is used for performance analysis whereas, in the correlator mode, the cross-correlation function, closure phase, and visibilities from the simultaneously recorded unfiltered and filtered is carried out. Searching for axion dark matter with MeerKAT Radio Telescope by Yun-Fan Zhou et al. on Tuesday 20 September Axions provide a natural and well-motivated dark matter candidate, with the capability to convert directly to photons in the presence of an electromagnetic field. A particularly compelling observational target is the conversion of dark matter axions into photons in the magnetospheres of highly magnetised neutron stars, which is expected to produce a narrow spectral peak centred at the frequency of the axion mass. We point the MeerKAT radio telescope towards the isolated neutron star J0806.4$-$4123 for $10$-hours of observation and obtain the radio spectra in the frequency range $769$-$1051$ MHz. By modelling the conversion process of infalling axion dark matter (DM) we then compare these spectra to theoretical expectations for a given choice of axion parameters. Whilst finding no signal above $5sigma$ in the data, we provide a unique constraint on the Primakoff coupling of axion DM, $g_{{rm a}gammagamma}lesssim 9.3 times 10^{-12},{rm GeV}^{-1}$ at the $95%$ confidence level, in the mass range $3.18$-$4.35,mu$eV. Detection of a quasi-periodic oscillation at sim 40 mHz in Cen X-3 with Insight-HXMT by Q. Liu et al. on Thursday 15 September We investigated the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) features in the accretion-powered X-ray pulsar Cen X-3 observed by Insight-HXMT. For two observations in 2020 when Cen X-3 was in an extremely soft state, the power density spectrum revealed the presence of obvious QPO features at $sim$40 mHz with an averaged fractional rms amplitude of $sim9%$. We study the mHz QPO frequency and rms amplitude over orbital phases, and find that the QPO frequency is $sim$33-39 mHz at the orbital phase of 0.1-0.4, increasing to $sim$37-43 mHz in the orbital phase of 0.4-0.8, but has no strong dependence on X-ray intensity. We also carried out an energy-dependent QPO analysis, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs have a decreasing trend as the energy increases from 2 to 20 keV. In addition, the QPO time-lag analysis shows that the time delay is $sim 20$ ms (a hard lag) in the range of $sim$5-10 keV, and becomes negative (time lag of $-(20-70)$ ms) above $sim 10$ keV. The different QPO theoretical models are summarized and discussed. In the end, we suggest that these energy-dependent timing features as well as the origin of mHz QPOs in Cen X-3 may be ascribed to an instability when the accretion disk is truncated near the corotation radius. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.06662v1

The Indian Pulsar Timing Array: First data release by Pratik Tarafdar et al. on Thursday 15 September We present the pulse arrival times and high-precision dispersion measure estimates for 14 millisecond pulsars observed simultaneously in the 300-500 MHz and 1260-1460 MHz frequency bands using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The data spans over a baseline of 3.5 years (2018-2021), and is the first official data release made available by the Indian Pulsar Timing Array collaboration. This data release presents a unique opportunity for investigating the interstellar medium effects at low radio frequencies and their impact on the timing precision of pulsar timing array experiments. In addition to the dispersion measure time series and pulse arrival times obtained using both narrowband and wideband timing techniques, we also present the dispersion measure structure function analysis for selected pulsars. Our ongoing investigations regarding the frequency dependence of dispersion measures have been discussed. Based on the preliminary analysis for five millisecond pulsars, we do not find any conclusive evidence of chromaticity in dispersion measures. Data from regular simultaneous two-frequency observations are presented for the first time in this work. This distinctive feature leads us to the highest precision dispersion measure estimates obtained so far for a subset of our sample. Simultaneous multi-band uGMRT observations in Band 3 and Band 5 are crucial for high-precision dispersion measure estimation and for the prospect of expanding the overall frequency coverage upon the combination of data from the various Pulsar Timing Array consortia in the near future. CHIME Discovery of a Binary Pulsar with a Massive Non-Degenerate Companion by Bridget C. Andersen et al. on Thursday 15 September Of the more than $3{,}000$ radio pulsars currently known, only ${sim}300$ are in binary systems, and only five of these consist of young pulsars with massive non-degenerate companions. We present the discovery and initial timing, accomplished using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment telescope (CHIME), of the sixth such binary pulsar, PSR J2108+4516, a $0.577$-s radio pulsar in a 269-day orbit of eccentricity 0.09 with a companion of minimum mass ${lesssim}11$ M$_{odot}$. Notably, the pulsar undergoes periods of substantial eclipse, disappearing from the CHIME $400{-}800$ MHz observing band for a large fraction of its orbit, and displays significant dispersion measure and scattering variations throughout its orbit, pointing to the possibility of a circumstellar disk or very dense stellar wind associated with the companion star. Sub-arcsecond resolution imaging with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array unambiguously demonstrates that the companion is a bright, $V simeq 11$ OBe star, EM* UHA 138, located at a distance of $3.26(14)$ kpc. The Propagation of Coherent Waves Across Multiple Solar Magnetic Pores by S. D. T. Grant et al. on Wednesday 14 September Solar pores are efficient magnetic conduits for propagating magnetohydrodynamic wave energy into the outer regions of the solar atmosphere. Pore observations often contain isolated and/or unconnected structures, preventing the statistical examination of wave activity as a function of atmospheric height. Here, using high resolution observations acquired by the Dunn Solar Telescope, we examine photospheric and chromospheric wave signatures from a unique collection of magnetic pores originating from the same decaying sunspot. Wavelet analysis of high cadence photospheric imaging reveals the ubiquitous presence of slow sausage mode oscillations, coherent across all photospheric pores through comparisons of intensity and area fluctuations, producing statistically significant in-phase relationships. The universal nature of these waves allowed an investigation of whether the wave activity remained coherent as they propagate. Utilizing bi-sector Doppler velocity analysis of the Ca II 8542 {AA} line, alongside comparisons of the modeled spectral response function, we find fine-scale 5 mHz power amplification as the waves propagate into the chromosphere. Phase angles approaching zero degrees between co-spatial bi-sectors spanning different line depths indicate standing sausage modes following reflection against the transition region boundary. Fourier analysis of chromospheric velocities between neighboring pores reveals the annihilation of the wave coherency observed in the photosphere, with examination of the intensity and velocity signals from individual pores indicating they behave as fractured wave guides, rather than monolithic structures. Importantly, this work highlights that wave morphology with atmospheric height is highly complex, with vast differences observed at chromospheric layers, despite equivalent wave modes being introduced into similar pores in the photosphere. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.06280v1

Bayesian parameter-estimation of Galactic binaries in LISA data with Gaussian Process Regression by Stefan H. Strub et al. on Thursday 08 September The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), which is currently under construction, is designed to measure gravitational wave signals in the milli-Hertz frequency band. It is expected that tens of millions of Galactic binaries will be the dominant sources of observed gravitational waves. The Galactic binaries producing signals at mHz frequency range emit quasi monochromatic gravitational waves, which will be constantly measured by LISA. To resolve as many Galactic binaries as possible is a central challenge of the upcoming LISA data set analysis. Although it is estimated that tens of thousands of these overlapping gravitational wave signals are resolvable, and the rest blurs into a galactic foreground noise; extracting tens of thousands of signals using Bayesian approaches is still computationally expensive. We developed a new end-to-end pipeline using Gaussian Process Regression to model the log-likelihood function in order to rapidly compute Bayesian posterior distributions. Using the pipeline we are able to solve the Lisa Data Challenge (LDC) 1-3 consisting of noisy data as well as additional challenges with overlapping signals and particularly faint signals. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2204.04467v3

Deep low-frequency radio observations of Abell 2256 II: The ultra-steep spectrum radio halo by K. Rajpurohit et al. on Thursday 08 September We present the first detailed analysis of the radio halo in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 using the LOFAR, uGMRT, and VLA. These observations combined with archival X-ray data allowed us to study the halo emission with unprecedented detail. The integrated radio emission from the entire halo is characterized by an ultra-steep spectrum, which can be described by a power law with $alpha_{144 rm MHz}^{1.5 rm GHz}=-1.63pm0.03$, and a radial steepening in the outer regions. The halo is significantly underluminous according to the scaling relations between radio power and mass at 1.4 GHz but not at 150 MHz; ultra-steep spectrum halos are predicted statistically underluminous. Despite the complex structure of this system, the radio halo morphology is remarkably similar to that of the X-ray emission. The radio surface brightness distribution across the halo is strongly correlated with the X-ray brightness of the intracluster medium. The derived correlations show sublinear slopes and there are distinct structures: the core is $rm I_{R}propto I_{X}^{1.51}$, the outermost region $rm I_{R}propto I_{X}^{0.41}$, and we find radio morphological connections with X-ray discontinuities. We also find a strong anti-correlation between the radio spectral index and the X-ray surface brightness, implying radial steepening. We suggests that the halo core is either related to old plasma from previous AGN activity, being advected, compressed and re-accelerated by mechanisms activated by the cold front or the turbulence is less strong and magnetic field is strong in the core. The change in the radio vs X-ray correlation slopes in the outer regions of the halo could be due to a radial decline of magnetic field, increase in the number density of seed particles or increasing turbulence. How to Deploy a 10-km Interferometric Radio Telescope on the Moon with Just Four Tethered Robots by Patrick McGarey et al. on Tuesday 06 September The Far-side Array for Radio Science Investigations of the Dark ages and Exoplanets (FARSIDE) is a proposed mission concept to the lunar far side that seeks to deploy and operate an array of 128 dual-polarization, dipole antennas over a region of 100 square kilometers. The resulting interferometric radio telescope would provide unprecedented radio images of distant star systems, allowing for the investigation of faint radio signatures of coronal mass ejections and energetic particle events and could also lead to the detection of magnetospheres around exoplanets within their parent star's habitable zone. Simultaneously, FARSIDE would also measure the "Dark Ages" of the early Universe at a global 21-cm signal across a range of red shifts (z approximately 50-100). Each discrete antenna node in the array is connected to a central hub (located at the lander) via a communication and power tether. Nodes are driven by cold=operable electronics that continuously monitor an extremely wide-band of frequencies (200 kHz to 40 MHz), which surpass the capabilities of Earth-based telescopes by two orders of magnitude. Achieving this ground-breaking capability requires a robust deployment strategy on the lunar surface, which is feasible with existing, high TRL technologies (demonstrated or under active development) and is capable of delivery to the surface on next-generation commercial landers, such as Blue Origin's Blue Moon Lander. This paper presents an antenna packaging, placement, and surface deployment trade study that leverages recent advances in tethered mobile robots under development at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which are used to deploy a flat, antenna-embedded, tape tether with optical communication and power transmission capabilities. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02216v1

This week's EYE ON NPI is a throwback to the 8-bit era, with a new spin on the classic AVR microcontrollers we've loved for decades: it's Microchip's AVR® DD Family of Microcontrollers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/avr-dd-family-of-microcontrollers), a powerful update to the powerful and low-power AVR RISC core that came from Atmel. While many folks may be moving to Cortex M0 or RISC-V chipsets to get 32-bit performance, there's still a lot of demand and use for 8-bit microcontrollers. Cost, simplicity, reliability, code-size, and power usage can all be better on 8-bit. If you're only on a 32-bit micro because of peripherals that tend to come with the fancier chips, you might be surprised by what the AVR DD family has to offer. For example, these chips have external interrupts on (just about all) the GPIO pins. There's four 16-bit timers plus one 12-bit (that's *five* total timers!), SPI & I2C, two UARTs, a 10-bit DAC, and 12-bit input ADC that's muxed to almost every pin. In particular, the high-bit ADC and DAC are a little unusual to see in an 8-bit platform. For example, CCL/LUT is a peripheral that allows you to make custom logic-lookup-tables for making simple - but very very fast - multi-input logic gates that can use interrupts or peripherals as input. (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/AppNotes/TB3218-Getting-Started-with-CCL-90003218A.pdf) For example, you can make a SR latch, logic gate, or Manchester encoder - you can think of it as like a 'micro' PIO or CPLD. MVIO is a new capability that we haven't seen before, where an IO port can run at a different logic level - either higher or lower than the VCC power. This allows easy bi-directional interfacing of SPI/I2C/GPIO to 3V logic from 5V, or vice versa, without the use of level shifting! (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/Appnotes/GettingStarted-MVIO-AVRDB-DS90003287A.pdf) Perfect if you want to run this main core at 5V for speed and signal strength, but have some 3V sensors to interface to, or run the core at 1.8V for power and IO but have a 3.4V LED you want to light up. Clock rate is up to 24 MHz, can be powered from 1.8 to 5.5V - it's exceedingly rare to find 5V ARM chips - and have FLASH, SRAM, EEPROM and NVM. EEPROM in particular is not common on ARM chips, and some don't even have built in Flash. So think of this as a compact li'l chip with pretty much everything you need to get a product out the door, with a range of memory sizes and physical packages from QFN to DIP! (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/AVR-DD-Product-Brief-DS40002215A.pdf) It's nice to see Microchip is still innovating the AVR line, to make better 8-bit micros that power the electronics around us. For programming, of course you can use MPLAB IDE but we like Arduino compatibility and SpenceKonde's DxCore (https://github.com/SpenceKonde/DxCore) looks like it's adding or added AVR DD support, so you can quickly get going with compiling code and using the basic peripherals in just a few minutes! Best of all, the AVR DD family of parts (https://www.digikey.com/short/m4qb8wf8) are totally in stock at Digi-Key right now for immediate shipment. There's SOIC, SSOP and QFN packages with up to 64KB flash / 8 KB RAM, all for about $1.50 in individuals, $1 in qty. If you're looking for an alternative to the ATmega328, this is a nice step up. We recommend getting started with the AVR DD Curiosity Nano board which is breadboard compatible and has everything needed to get started. Scanner School - Everything you wanted to know about the Scanner Radio Hobby

Do you need an aftermarket antenna for your scanner? Will changing your antenna help or impair your scanner's performance? What You Need To Know Stock antennas included with your scanner can cover large frequencies. Antennas with wide coverage will sacrifice performance. Antennas with too narrow coverage can also impair your reception. You don't want to have an 800 MHz antenna on your scanner when you're trying to also listen to VHF. However, if you have an 800MHz antenna and need to monitor 800MHz, then you may find a big improvement in reception. When we look at aftermarket antennas, we need to check what type of connector do we have on top of our scanner. Today's scanners use BNC or some style of SMA. You need an antenna to match or buy adapters to make your new antenna match your scanner's antenna jack. After market antennas can have gain, which can certainly help us pull in weaker signals. There may be times where you want to cause an intentional degradation of reception If you have issues with P25 simulcast, maybe you want to knock out distant transmitters and detuning your antenna might actually help you receive better. If you are receiving well enough using the stock antenna, will swapping the antenna out actually improve anything? You can't receive 120% of a signal.   ====================================
