Rendez-vous incontournable des amoureux de la musique FUNK Il était une fois, mes premiers 45T, maxis, albums, mes premières cassettes audio, il me manquait quelque chose, une expérience radio, elle allait venir, il a fallu se présenter, ce fut chose faite et hop : L'aventure allait commencer en 1982, je m'en souviens très bien, les émissions Funk se succédaient le week end, c'était de la folie, premiers calages de disques vinyles et premières interventions au micro. La toute première radio s'appelait RDP Radio des Poumons 92 mhz, de bons souvenirs avant de connaître d'autres horizons. Nous sommes en 1983, je débarque sur une radio beaucoup plus importante à l'époque avec à l'intérieur une équipe d'animateurs qui pour la plupart officiaient aussi en discothèque, cette station de radio avait pour nom Contact Fm sur le 104 mhz. Il a fallu se faire une place et ce fut chose faite avec une émission Funk Night Club le vendredi, le samedi il existait une autre émission Funk appelée Dérapages Nocturnes animée par Pascal , belle rencontre, contraint d'abandonner pour raisons personnelles quelques temps après cette émission, je décide avec son accord de reprendre celle-ci, il était inconcevable à l'époque que cette émission DN puisse disparaître de la grille des programmes de la radio, les années passent, Contact FM devient Radio Mandarine 95.2 mhz. Au milieu des années 80 l'occasion se présente et j'organise des soirées Funk dans une discothèque Nantaise située à la Beaujoire : le New Cleef , de bons souvenirs mais aussi de belles rencontres. Fin Janvier 1988, Radio Mandarine cesse d'émettre, une page se tourne, l'émission DN reprendra sur quelques radios : Saga 98 Mhz, Radio Fréquence bleue 102.1 Mhz en Bretagne , Radio Alternantes 98.1 Mhz. Janvier 1996 l'émission DN arrive sur Turbulence Radio 93.4 mhz qui deviendra par la suite Radio NTI en Janvier 2001, l'émission cessera d'émettre sur NTI le samedi 24 Juillet 2004. 8 ans ½ là encore de bons souvenirs. Nouveau départ pour les DN en Septembre 2004 sur une Radio locale Nantaise SUN 93 FM où je retrouve la couleur musicale que j'avais connu une bonne vingtaine d'années auparavant sur Contact Fm puis Radio Mandarine. Vendredi 26 Septembre 2008 sur SUN le Son Unique à Nantes avec des passionnés de musique Funk, nous avons célébré comme il se doit le 25 eme Anniversaire de l'émission DN toutes radios confondues, un grand merci à Pascal, Denis Louis Marie, Dominique, Xavier et José. Vendredi 30 Septembre 2011, le 28 eme Anniversaire des DN a eu lieu, un grand merci pour leur présence à Kamel et Thierry, étaient également présents José , Dominique, Eric, Maxime, Denis, Louis Marie, Xavier, Guy Accardo du groupe Plaisir mais aussi Joce, Charles et les frangins Eric et Alex A. The following DX information comes from Bernie, W3UR, editor of the DailyDX, the WeeklyDX, and the How's DX column in QST. If you would like a free 2-week trial of the DailyDX, your only source of real-time DX information, just drop me a note at thedxmentor@gmail.com I have some details on the CP7DX DXpedition to Bolivia. They are QRV from Tarija until June 6, including the CQ WW WPX CW weekend. The rest of the time they will do SSB, CW and FT8, 160-6M and EME on 144 and 432 MHz. QSL direct to LU1FM and Club Log OQRS too. WA7RAR, Chris, is QRV from Bonaire as PJ4CB until June 8, SSB and CW, 20-10M and from POTA sites on the island. Alain, F8FUA, will be in Kigali, Rwanda, operating holiday style as 9X5KM from June 4 to 13. There will be activity on CW, SSB and Digital on all HF bands, and depending on local conditions, possibly 160 meters. QSO will be uploaded to LoTW and LoTW, but no OQRS. QSL direct or via the bureau to F8FUA. OH1LEG and OH1MN, Juha and Markus, will again activate OJ0Z and OJ0MN respectively from Market Reef, until June 6. It will be the same gear as previously, a pair of IC-7300 radios and dipoles and other wire antennas. Modes will be SSB and FT8. Juha says they do four meters down to 160 meters and “I like more low bands.” They will not do Logbook of the World or eQSL. 3G0Z became QRV from Juan Fernandez using 17m SSB and FT8 with a single-element Delta Loop antenna. Felipe was still installing additional antennas and planned to bring a linear amplifier online to expand capabilities. Weather on the island was cool but manageable—around 15°C (59°F) with clouds, light rain, and mild wind. The antenna site, about 40 meters above sea level, offers strong propagation toward Europe, Africa, and the central U.S. The operation is expected to last about 20 days. Mac, KC8CPK, is a flight nurse on temporary duty at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, doing Medevac work and is operating as V7/KC8CPK while awaiting his Marshallese license. Because the ham shack and antennas are shared with DARPA and NASA, he can only operate when the equipment is not otherwise in use, though he is trying to get on the air as often as possible. He expects to remain for about three more weeks. Current equipment is an IC-7300 with an M² 7/10/30LP antenna, and 40 meters seems to be the best band for that setup. There are also experimental fan dipoles for lower bands, possibly including 60 meters, but 80 meters is not available. VR2XAN, Alberto, will be on as XX9TXN from Macao June 2-9, SSB, CW and FT8, all bands 160-6, “with a special focus on North America.” He says he will attempt SSB on 80M “and maybe 160.” QSL to IV3SKB. ZL3IO, Holger is back in Waitangi, Chatham Islands, using the callsign ZL7IO, today to June 4, including the CQ WPX CW weekend, a single operator all band. QSL to DK7AO. VP0/H – South Shetland Islands SQ4O, Rafal Mazur, says “If everything goes well, I plan to start broadcasting at the end of May” as HF0PAS from the Polish Antarctic Station Arctowski on King George Island. He has installed a Yagi for 20, 15 and 10 meters as well one for 6 meters. Rafal still has plans to install a dipole for 80 and 40 meters. He is expected to be there until October. TF1OL, Ólafur, and his wife will be on Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde, from June 12 to June 23 for a 10-day stay. During this time, he will be active on FT8 and FT4 on 80 through 6 meters under the callsign D4OL. Rendez-vous incontournable des amoureux de la musique FUNK Il était une fois, mes premiers 45T, maxis, albums, mes premières cassettes audio, il me manquait quelque chose, une expérience radio, elle allait venir, il a fallu se présenter, ce fut chose faite et hop : L'aventure allait commencer en 1982, je m'en souviens très bien, les émissions Funk se succédaient le week end, c'était de la folie, premiers calages de disques vinyles et premières interventions au micro. La toute première radio s'appelait RDP Radio des Poumons 92 mhz, de bons souvenirs avant de connaître d'autres horizons. Nous sommes en 1983, je débarque sur une radio beaucoup plus importante à l'époque avec à l'intérieur une équipe d'animateurs qui pour la plupart officiaient aussi en discothèque, cette station de radio avait pour nom Contact Fm sur le 104 mhz. Il a fallu se faire une place et ce fut chose faite avec une émission Funk Night Club le vendredi, le samedi il existait une autre émission Funk appelée Dérapages Nocturnes animée par Pascal , belle rencontre, contraint d'abandonner pour raisons personnelles quelques temps après cette émission, je décide avec son accord de reprendre celle-ci, il était inconcevable à l'époque que cette émission DN puisse disparaître de la grille des programmes de la radio, les années passent, Contact FM devient Radio Mandarine 95.2 mhz. Au milieu des années 80 l'occasion se présente et j'organise des soirées Funk dans une discothèque Nantaise située à la Beaujoire : le New Cleef , de bons souvenirs mais aussi de belles rencontres. Fin Janvier 1988, Radio Mandarine cesse d'émettre, une page se tourne, l'émission DN reprendra sur quelques radios : Saga 98 Mhz, Radio Fréquence bleue 102.1 Mhz en Bretagne , Radio Alternantes 98.1 Mhz. Janvier 1996 l'émission DN arrive sur Turbulence Radio 93.4 mhz qui deviendra par la suite Radio NTI en Janvier 2001, l'émission cessera d'émettre sur NTI le samedi 24 Juillet 2004. 8 ans ½ là encore de bons souvenirs. Nouveau départ pour les DN en Septembre 2004 sur une Radio locale Nantaise SUN 93 FM où je retrouve la couleur musicale que j'avais connu une bonne vingtaine d'années auparavant sur Contact Fm puis Radio Mandarine. Vendredi 26 Septembre 2008 sur SUN le Son Unique à Nantes avec des passionnés de musique Funk, nous avons célébré comme il se doit le 25 eme Anniversaire de l'émission DN toutes radios confondues, un grand merci à Pascal, Denis Louis Marie, Dominique, Xavier et José. Vendredi 30 Septembre 2011, le 28 eme Anniversaire des DN a eu lieu, un grand merci pour leur présence à Kamel et Thierry, étaient également présents José , Dominique, Eric, Maxime, Denis, Louis Marie, Xavier, Guy Accardo du groupe Plaisir mais aussi Joce, Charles et les frangins Eric et Alex A. The award went to the RussianDXpedition Team for their 9U1RU expedition to Burundi, which logged 179,831QSOs and moved the entity from #60 to #106 in ranking. They plan HF SSB and will have live updates, photos, logs and QSL info as things unfold.
Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently I discovered that the antenna that I had connected to my WSPR or Weak Signal Propagation Reporter beacon was not a 40m antenna, instead, it turns out to be a 15m antenna. The how and why of that mix-up isn't particularly helpful, so instead I set out to remedy the situation. Step one was simple, go into the garage and pull out the antennas and check if I had forgotten about an 80m antenna. As it happens, I'd forgotten about a 17 megacycles antenna. At the moment I couldn't tell you if it was intended for Maritime or Amateur use, but it doesn't really matter, since I'm not permitted to use those frequencies for transmit and I was on a mission. Oh, I also discovered that you can dislodge two shelves with stuff on them by moving an antenna. Fun. So, 7 MHz, or 40m it is. The antenna mount is clamped with G-clamps to the side of a steel roofed framework that's bolted to the house. It's been there for about eight years or so. From time-to-time I change over the antenna depending on my mood. Today I wanted to move the mount and after taking it down decided that it could do with a little maintenance, least of which due to the fact that the feed-point connector had detached itself. I also needed to remove the ground wire, which turns out to be a bit of a palaver, since my socket wrench adaptor has gone walkabout and the 10 mm socket that fits into the next size is too large. Eventually I found an imperial socket with a matching wrench to undo the thing. Then I set about moving the mount to a new location, tucked inside a tree, so plenty of branches to poke me in the eye, or the belly, depending on which was handy at the time, and discovered that the steel beam was thicker, to the point that my G-clamps were 2 mm too small. So, I spent some quality time comparing hardware store offerings, finally found a bigger G-clamp for a reasonable price, but in the process discovered customer reviews and photos showing that the clamps fail if you hand-tighten them. Me being the "if you can move it, it's not tight" kind of person, figured that this would not work. Found F-clamps at a different hardware store and went on my merry way to get one. The hardware store was undergoing maintenance, so hammer drills and stuff everywhere, more fun. After getting back home I discovered that the new location was great in theory, but in practice it turns out to be less than spectacular, since the beam has a slight curve in it, making for a poor clamping surface and no place to put two clamps. Back to the original location. Using the new clamps, fighting for space, I realised that I could re-use the old clamps, so swapped them over. Then I got to the point of connecting the feed-point and discovered that my 40m antenna is missing the mounting thread and the all-thread inside the old antenna wouldn't budge, neither would any of the threads in the other two antennas. So, at this point, three hours in, I came to the realisation that this was going to be a 15m antenna or no antenna. So, 15m it is. There is one actual change. I discovered that the feed-point connector is actually an SO-239 socket and the connector to it was a standard banana plug which in turn was connected to a BNC connector, with the shield connected to ground. I realised that I could use a BNC to PL-259 adaptor instead to connect the RG6 coax to my antenna. This means that the coax is now directly connected to the feed-point, rather than through a weird cobbled together BNC-to-wire-split-thinga-ma-bob-contraption. It looks very pretty. Measuring the result also shows some changes. On both 40m and 15m the SWR is still the same, on 10m it's a little worse and on 2m it's significantly better. All in all, I think this is a perfect example of 17 steps backwards and 18 steps forward. I suppose it could be worse. I'll let you know how the beacon goes. Now, I should probably log this. Something like: "QTH HF antenna mount maintenance, nothing changed, 15m antenna, PL-259 to BNC adaptor to replace homebrew wire splitter. 3 hours." I'm Onno VK6FLAB
