Foundations of Amateur Radio The other day I saw a post by fellow amateur Gary N8DMT who mentioned an "RF circulator" and a PlutoSDR in the same sentence. Amplified by a response from a fellow Aussie Electronics Engineer, "ozeng", who helpfully added a link to a Wikipedia article about circulators, it finally twigged that I had such a gadget in my possession and for the first time I realised how I might use it. Now, before I continue, I'll preface this with a disclaimer, this is a hand-wavy description of what this very interesting device does. "ozeng" calls it "Absolute witchcraft." and that's an apt description if ever I've heard one. Imagine for a moment a radio with separate transmitter and receiver connectors, attached to the same antenna using a T-piece, as-in, there's a run of coax coming from each connector, joined together with a T-piece, which in turn is connected to an antenna. The aim of this, don't do this at home contraption, is to avoid the need for two antennas, but, and it's a big one, doing this will very likely destroy your receiver the moment you transmit for the first time, because likely half the transmission will go to the antenna, while the other half makes its way to the receiver, which is not going to be something you want to happen, unless you like the smell of magic smoke. You might think that adding an attenuator, something that reduces the power on the receive port would help. Well, yes, it would, but as a side-effect, it would also reduce the signal coming from the antenna. At that point you'll decide you need a switch. Initially you might switch this manually, but that's a pain if you're wanting to transmit and receive continuously and need to remember in which position the switch is in. The next step is to use an electronic switch, like a relay. It can trigger based on some signal from the radio when it's transmitting and turn off the receive path during a transmission. This raises an issue with delay. Do you trigger just before you hit the PTT, as-in, time-travel, or do you delay the transmitter until after the relay has switched, which will cut off the beginning of your transmission? You'll likely have heard this kind of issue when listening to a station using an external amplifier. Their signal either jumps from low power to high power after they key up, or you miss the beginning of their callsign. Not to mention that if you get the delay wrong, you blow up the receiver, fun for people watching, not so much for the equipment owner. Even if you get the timing right, you cannot transmit and receive at the same time. Of course an obvious solution is to have two antennas, but soon you'll discover that when you're transmitting and receiving on the same frequency, even using two antennas, you'll have the exact same issues. It's why the local 10m repeater here in Perth, VK6RHF, has the transmitter in one location and a receiver 12 km away, connected to each other via a 70cm radio link. Other solutions in this space are cavity filters, duplexers and diplexers. These all require that the transmit and receive frequencies are different and the equipment is generally tuned to a specific pair of frequencies. Physically cavity filters can be massive, not to mention fragile. So, solving the issue of having a transmitter and receiver together on the same frequency is one that is challenging to say the least. It's a common issue, think about mobile phones, satellites, broadcast transmitters, and even your own amateur radio station. An RF circulator is a device that solves this in an extremely elegant way. For starters, it's a passive device, which means that you don't need to power it, there's no moving parts, no switches, no delays, no external controls, it's a box, generally with three sockets or ports, though versions exist with more. At a basic level, it works like this. A signal inserted into port one, will only come out of port two. Similarly, a signal into port two, will only come out of port three and finally, a signal into port three, will only come out of port one. Think of it as a one way roundabout. How is this useful you might ask. I'll illustrate by plugging in three things, connect port one to an antenna, port two to a receiver and port three, a transmitter. When you transmit into port three, the signal only goes to the antenna, leaving the receiver safe and happy. Similarly, any antenna signal will only go to the receiver. So, how does this work? Remember, hand-wavy. Essentially, it's based on the idea that radio waves travelling in one direction combine and waves travelling in the opposite direction cancel. Different types of circulators achieve this in different ways and come in different sizes as a result. The RF circulator I have is roughly 60 mm square, 30 mm thick, weighing in at most of half a kilogram and as far as I know, intended for operation around 850 MHz. If I recall correctly, it came out of a CDMA mobile phone tower. The parameters that describe an RF circulator are the frequency range, the insertion loss, or how much signal gets lost getting from port one to port two, the isolation, or how much signal leaks between port one and port three and a couple of others. Hopefully I'll be able to use a NanoVNA, or PlutoSDR to get a sense of what these values are and confirm the frequency range. Now, if that doesn't blow your mind, wait until I tell you about the two hundred year history that accompanies it. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

As already explained in an earlier episode (Season Five Episode 6) the Fedayeen terrorist raiders would sneak into Israel, murder, sabotage, set fire, steal, and slip back across the border to Egypt and Jordan. This was death by a thousand cuts to Israel. And then things deteriorated precipitously when in September of 1955, Nasser announced that Egypt has signed a massive arms deal with Czechoslovakia (read: Russia) which will give Egypt an enormous military edge over Israel and enable the Fedayeen to be backed by tank brigades. Nasser openly states that he intends to destroy Israel and he will soon have the weaponry to enable this. Israel is running out of time. And just then Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal, antagonizing and threatening the British and the French. A surreptitious international pact is formed to undercut Nasser, which will come to be known as the Sinai Campaign of 1956.   Credits: Middle-Eastern Duet Worship Song “David Danced” Unidentified Arabic Radio Station on 36.96 MHz 1940's Newsreel Music, George Streicher Epic Military War Themes 2025, Aggressive Battle Music Collection Arab Crowd Cheers to Palestinian Leader   Learn more at TellerFromJerusalem.com Don't forget to subscribe, like and share! Hello and Welcome to the DX Corner for your weekly Dose of DX. I'm Bill, AJ8B.Each week I try to focus on those entities that will be available in the next 7 days. There is so much data to sift through that I thought a focus on the next week might be helpful. Here is what you should find QRV when you tune the bands. The following DX information comes from Bernie, W3UR, editor of theDailyDX, the WeeklyDX, and the How's DX column in QST. If you would like a free 2-week trial of the DailyDX, your only source of real-time DX information, justdrop me a note at thedxmentor@gmail.com As a reminder VE7BV, Dwight, is QRV from Guatemala where he is operating holiday style as TG9BBV until October 25. Activity is on CW, SSB, and FT8 on 7 through 50 MHz. QSL direct or via the bureau to VE7BV and LoTW. The Rebel DX Group is QRV from Niue as E6AD. For the first weeks, the emphasis will be FT4 and MSHV SuperFox.  The entire operation will emphasize digital and CW, with a "little SSB as well." A multi-national team will be on the air from Gingerbread Hill in St Peter's on Montserrat for the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest. They still have 1-3 operating positions open. Most of the team will be there from October 22-28, with Irina and Ralf staying a few more days afterwards. During the contest they will be operating VP2MPN on 80 through 10 meters as a multi-op effort. QSL VP2MPN via KB4YPN and eventually LoTW. Station 7Q1A will be QRV from Malawi between October 18-24, CW and digital and the CQ WW DX SSB Contest with two or more stations.  Ops say they will have veterans and fresh energy of a new generation, "the future of our hobby."  QSL direct to 7Q7CT or use LoTW or QRZ Logbook. https://www.qrz.com/db/7Q1A The DXObsessed team is preparing for their 2025 FW5K DXPedition to Wallis Island. The group is excited about the trip, with all members packing and finalizing logistics. Team members will depart from Arizona and Oregon, meeting in Dallas, Texas, before flying to Nadi, Fiji, then onward to Wallis Island. Arrival is scheduled for 2:25 PM on Saturday, October 18, 2025, local time. Gregg, W6IZT, reports that the PJ6Y team (https://pj6y2025.com/) is enroute and will rendezvous in St. Martin early this afternoon before boarding the short flight to Saba. The entire team is very excited to arrive on the island. Thanks to everyone for your continued support — we look forward to seeing you in the pileups! The D2A DXPedition to Angola, QRV until October 28, consists of Portuguese and Spanish operators commemorating Angola's 50th anniversary of independence. QSL via EA7FTR.  The 5KØUA DXPedition team will arrive on San Andrés Island between October 15-20 and expects to be on the air October 20-30. They will leave the island November 3. They plan to operate 160-10M CW, SSB, and FT8, and will be in the CQ Worldwide DX Contest, SSB. Before and after the contest, they will conduct “regular DX activity.” QSL using LoTW or Club Log OQRS.  Phill remains active as C21TS from Nauru until the end of November, then he will be QRT for 2 months and back starting from February 2026. ‘I'll probably be back for a few months from February 2026 with minimal gear, probably just FT-891. Hard finish will be June 2026 and no later.' QSL via M0OXO OQRS or LoTW. Maurizio, IK2GZU is QRV again as 5H3MB from Tanzania until November 20. He returns as a volunteer in the Ikelu hospital in the South Highlands. He will be operating is his spare time on HF using CW, SSB and digi. QSL via home call, LoTW, Club Log. Luc, F5RAV, is QRV from The Gambia as C5R until October 31. Following on from previous visit where money was raised to build a new classroom for infants, the plan this time is build two more classrooms and to start a radio club to introduce YOTA.   Until next week, this is Bill, AJ8B saying 73 and thanks to my XYL Karen for her love and support. I Hope to hear you in the pileups! Have a great DX week!

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio The other day I received an email from Frank K4FMH asking me about an idea I'd worked on some time ago, namely the notion that I might monitor solar flux at home using a software defined radio. At the time I was attempting to get some software running on my PlutoSDR and got nowhere fast. Before I continue, a PlutoSDR, or more formally an ADALM Pluto Active Learning Module by Analog Devices, is both a computer and a software defined radio receiver and transmitter in a cute little blue box. I've talked about this device before. It's an open design, which means that both the software and hardware are documented and available straight from the manufacturer. Out of the box it covers 325 MHz to 3.8 GHz. You can connect to a PlutoSDR using USB or via the network, wireless or Ethernet, though I will mention that neither of those last two is currently working for me, but more on that later. Encouraged by Frank's email, I set out to explore further and came across a 2019 European GNU Radio days workshop, which discussed some of the tools that are available for the PlutoSDR, accompanied by two PDF documents walking you through the experience. One comment around why the PlutoSDR uses networking as one of the connectivity options spoke to me. From a usability perspective, networking makes it easier to access the PlutoSDR from a virtual machine, since most of the time that already has network connectivity, whereas USB often requires drivers. As you might recall, network connectivity is one of the many things that I'm trying to achieve with a project that I'm calling Bald Yak, since by the time we're done, there's not going to be much hair left from all the Yak Shaving. The Bald Yak project aims to create a modular, bidirectional and distributed signal processing and control system that leverages GNU Radio. As a result, I set about trying to actually walk myself through those PDF tutorials .. and got stuck on the first sentence on the first page, which helpfully states: "The necessary prerequisites have been installed on the local lab machine." It went on to supply a link to a page with instructions on how to acquire those very same prerequisites. Two days later, after much trial and error, I can now report that I too have these installed and because I cannot help myself, I made it into a Docker container and published this on my VK6FLAB GitHub page. To put it mildly, there's a few moving parts and plenty of gotchas. As an aside, if you think that installing Docker is harder than installing these tools, I have some news for you .. trust me .. by a long shot .. it's not. Right now I'm working on writing the documentation that accompanies this project such that you can actually use it without needing to bang your head against the desk in frustration. Mind you, the documentation part of this is non-trivial. For reasons I don't yet understand, my Pluto does not want to talk to the network directly over either WiFi or Ethernet, and connecting over USB through a virtual machine inside a Docker container is giving me headaches, so right now I'm connected across the network to a Raspberry Pi that's physically connected to the Pluto. As a result, I can now use the tools inside my Docker container, connected to the Pluto through the Pi and if you're curious, 'iiod' is the tool to make that happen .. more documentation. At this point you might well ask, why bother? This is a fair question. Let me see if I can give you an answer that will satisfy. Monitoring solar flux typically occurs at 2.8 GHz, which is outside the range of RTL-SDR dongles which top out at about 1.7 GHz. For the PlutoSDR however, it's almost perfectly within the standard frequency range. One of the tools that is introduced by the talk is an application called 'iio-scope', which as the name suggests, is an oscilloscope for 'iio' or Industrial I/O devices, of which the PlutoSDR is one. As an aside, the accelerometer in your laptop, the battery voltage, the CPU temperatures, fans, and plenty of others, are all 'iio' devices that you can look at with various tools. So, once I've finished the tutorials, I suspect that I will understand a little better how some of the various parts of the PlutoSDR hang together, and I can set it up to monitor 2.8 GHz. Of course, that's only step one, the next step is to make a Raspberry Pi record the power levels over time, better still, record it on the PlutoSDR itself, and see if we can actually notice any change .. without requiring anything fancy like a special antenna, some massive filters, a special mount and all the other fun and games that no doubt will reveal themselves in good time. It also means that, if I got this right, I have the beginnings of the bits needed to get the PlutoSDR to talk to GNU Radio. Why? Because I can, and because Frank asked, also Yak Shaving. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

EYE on NPI - Qualcomm & Arduino UNO Q Microcontroller Board

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2025 18:46

This week's EYE ON NPI is as mysterious and powerful as the extra-dimensional being from Star Trek (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(Star_Trek)) - it's the new Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/uno-q-microcontroller-board) microcontroller board, released as part of the Qualcomm/Arduino acquisition announcement (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2025/10/qualcomm-to-acquire-arduino-accelerating-developers--access-to-i). This Uno-shaped board is packed with both an STM32 microcontroller and a Qualcomm Dragonwing microprocessor so you get the best-of-both-worlds: 3.3V/5V logic compatibility with timers and ADCs, plus a full Debian install and AI support for running local vision models. We last checked in on Arduino we were reviewing their new announcements based on a partnership with Renesas: the Arduino Nano R4 SoC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLAI41ZfCfw) which is a miniaturized version of the UNO R4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw0EU8urz5M). These boards feature an Arm microcontroller, with lots of fun on-board accessories like an LED grid, Qwiic connector, and WiFi/Bluetooth module. These boards represented a bump in capabilities over the classic UNO R3 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000073/3476357) but are still under-powered compared to the 'Portenta' line (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00045/15294134). So, when we see the Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/short/qc9d09fm) is a merging of three separate 'strands' of Arduino development history. One, it's shaped and has hardware-compatibility with the classic UNO which has been their mainstay for decades. Two, it has the powerful microcontroller type that the Pro line features. And three, it revives some of the Linux-based boards that Arduino had previously released like the Yun (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000008/4486331), Tian (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-tian/) and Tre (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-tre). What sets the Q apart is that this time instead of being just a chip-supplier partnership, Arduino has been acquired as a subsidiary of Qualcomm (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2025/10/qualcomm-to-acquire-arduino-accelerating-developers--access-to-i) which means that there's going to be first-class engineering support for the onboard Dragonwing processor. Speaking of, let's take a look at the hardware included in the new Q! There's two chipsets on each board: the big processor is a Qualcomm Dragonwing™ QRB2210 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/qualcomm/QRB-2210-0-NSP752-TR-00-0/27904331) - 64-bit System-on-Chip with 4 × Arm Cortex-A53 running at 2.0 GHz and Adreno 702 GPU running at 845 MHz for 3D graphics. This chip runs mainline Debian OS with upstream support so you can configure a kernel and distribution image without needing patches. Arduino and Qualcomm distribute their own ready to go image too (https://docs.arduino.cc/tutorials/uno-q/update-image/). This chip has modern A/V support with both CSI camera and DSI MIPI display capability to match. Those high speed connects are available on the dual 60-pin bottom connects - while there isn't a sub-connect board right now, it's likely that Arduino will develop one soon. Meanwhile, you can use their documentation (https://docs.arduino.cc/hardware/uno-q/) such as STEP and Gerber files if you want to start adding a direct-plug integration into your hardware now. The second chipset is a STM32U585 Arm Cortex-M33 with 2 MB Flash, 786 kB SRAM and running at 160 MHz - it runs the Arduino Core via Zephyr OS and from the block diagram, looks like it communicates with the main core via UART and SPI. The STM is what handles GPIO, PWM, ADC, DAC, timers, etc since it is 3.3V logic and has some 5V logic-level compatibility. The main headers on the Arduino - and some of the bottom extra headers - expose the STM logic so you can connect standard sensors, OLEDs, relays etc. While there are some GPIO from the Dragonwing also available, they're 1.8V logic and are already allocated in the Linux Device tree. The Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/short/qc9d09fm) is available for pre-order right now from DigiKey for a door-busting $44! We've already put in our order, and we'll do a project to check it out as soon as it arrives. After you get your pre-order in, check out some of the projects that have already been published to get a sense of the Q's capabilities like this MAME emulation arcade cabinet (https://projecthub.arduino.cc/jcarolinares/arduino-uno-q-arcade-cabinet-machine-39dd38) or face-recognition car (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGDxAXpH_Ag). You can start dreaming of what you'll be able to do with a full computer + microcontroller board that fits where your old UNO R3 would fit, while you wait for the shipping notification.

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Hello again. this is Trey. This is part 2 in my Cheap Yellow Display (CYD) Project series. You can find Part 1 in episode 4472 . We previously left our handy hero learning about the technology of the CYD, but without a compelling reason to begin using one. As we rejoin the topic, it was Winter Field Day 2025 (Jan 25 & 26, 2025). Winter Field Day is an annual event where amateur radio operators from around the world gather some portable radio equipment and setup somewhere away from their normal base of operations. It is designed to encourage operators to practice their emergency preparedness skills in unfavorable weather. Usually, they will run their equipment using batteries or generators. I chose this day because I knew there would be a good amount of radio traffic. I had just finished tuning my first handmade inverted-V dipole antenna for use on the 10 meter amateur radio bands. These span 28 MHz to 29.700 MHz. I had the antenna connected to a 10 meter transceiver to listen in on the radio traffic. Yes, I will include pictures of the antenna in the show notes. Scanning through the lower end of the band resulted in receiving a number of very strong continuous wave signals. Continuous wave, is abbreviated CW in amateur radio circles, and it stands for morse code signals transmitted over radio frequencies. The tones indicating dots and dashes of Morse code were clearly audible through the radio's speaker. "WAIT! STOP! Time out!!" I can hear you shouting as you listen. "This is supposed to be a discussion of the ESP32 CYD. What does this have to do with amateur radio?" You are absolutely right. Now hold your horses and we will get there. I barely learned Morse code as a child, and I used it a bit as an aviator in the '90s (while always being able to reference a visual representation of the Morse beside the actual letters). Thus, I never became proficient. Shortly after Winter Field Day 2025, I began taking lessons on Morse code, with the goal of becoming proficient at both sending and receiving at around 20 words per minute. This training may be a topic for another episode in a different series, as my journey advances. Scanning further up the band, I also identified some digital transmissions (Probably FT-8) and many voice transmissions. The antenna was working, at least for receiving. For a little back history, I have held an amateur radio license since 2016, and quickly progressed all the way to an Extra Class, giving me permission to use all of the amateur radio frequencies allowed within the United States in the High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) bands. However, to this point, I have only operated in the VHF and UHF bands, and have done so using mobile and handheld transceivers. I inherited some HF equipment from a close friend who went silent key in 2023, and I was only now trying to use it. You can learn more about my friend, and about the term "Silent Key" in episode HPR3922 https://www.hackerpublicradio.org/eps/hpr3922/index.html ) On field day, there was far too much traffic, and it was too intimidating for me to make my first attempt at transmitting on the HF bands. This would have to wait until later. But I did need to determine how well my antenna would transmit. I began to ponder my options. I really did not want to talk to anyone until I had listened to more QSOs and I could implement proper practices. The term QSO the amateur radio term for radio conversations. I also have no interest in digital modes (yet). I like the simplicity of voice and CW. There I am, back at Morse code again. What if there was a way that I could transmit a signal in Morse code and get reliable feedback on signal propagation, without the need to try to reply to any responses? It would need to be an accurate, repeatable, properly structured and timed Morse code transmission, more than my training (at that point, or even this point) could accomplish. This was something to think about. And think about. And think about... Tune in to the next episode in the series to learn where these thoughts led me, and how all this relates to my CYD project. Provide feedback on this episode.

EYE ON NPI - Microchip Technology MCP41U83 (Single) and MCP42U83 (Dual) Potentiometers

This week's EYE ON NPI takes a look at a new product with a lot of potential: it's the Microchip Technology MCP41U83 (Single) and MCP42U83 (Dual) Digital Potentiometer series. This family of solid-state potentiometers is ready to replace your mechanical knobs and trimmers: no through hole soldering, and no mechanical failures due to oil, dirt or vibration. With 10-bit resolution, you'll get excellent repeatability and precision for tweaking analog voltages. And, the high 100MHz+ bandwidth means you can use it for filters, audio, sensors, without worry that about losing your signal shape. Potentiometers are trusty mechanical-to-electrical components, used in almost every design to convert mechanical motion - both linear and rotational - to an electronic signal that can easily be measured. They're inexpensive, available in thousands of configurations (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/potentiometers-variable-resistors/5): linear or logarithmic, panel mount or SMT, single or dual, linear or rotational, in values from 1 ohm up to 1 Meg. They all pretty much work the same way, with a strip of conductive material such that from end-to-end the resistance is the total 'range' of the pot, and a wiper that literally wipes across from one end to another. Pots can be easily configured as voltage dividers by putting a signal across the two ends and then 'tapping' in to the wiper. Or, they can be rheostats (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentiometer#Rheostat) where only one end and the wiper are used to make a variable resistor value. We love pots and trimmers and use them all the time, but they have serious down-sides. Over time, the wipers eventually scrape through the conductive material creating 'scratchy' pots that jump around in value. Or, oil and dust get in and gunk up the internals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUMxFIH5BN8). They can also drift over time or with humidity so that the center isn't really centered anymore. Also, if your product gets moved around, the knob can get bumped or if its a trimmer, it can get shifted from the vibration (https://forum.digikey.com/t/potentiometer-locking-adhesive-goop/50757) - for that reason if you open up a product with trimmers often times they are dabbed with wax or glue to keep them 'set' (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/mg-chemicals/4228A-55ML/17884735). Thus the genius of digital pots! The Microchip Technology MCP41U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt3zwnq5) and MCP42U83 series chips can replace the mechanical versions while providing I2C or SPI interface for configuration. Unlike many digital pot chips we've used in the past, the MCP41U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt3zwnq5) has 10-bits of resolution for 1024 positions - most top-out at 7-bits or 128 positions! That means you'll actually get better resolution and repeatability than a mechanical pot. Also, many digipots lose their value when power cycled, but the MCP41U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt3zwnq5) comes with internal non-volatile memory so once you've settled on a value you can save it semi-permanently. Note that the NVRAM is rated for 1000 cycle writes so just be aware you can't write to it continuously. The MCP41U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt3zwnq5) comes with both I2C and SPI interfaces. For I2C there are two address pins so you can select up to 4 addresses. For SPI, the pots can be 'daisy-chained' together for up to 128 without needing separate CS lines for each one. For power/logic you can use 2.7~5.5V. If you happen to want to use this for a split supply, you can but the split voltages will still need to be no more than -2.75 and +2.75V. A nice specification we noted in the datasheet is the high bandwidth, with tens-of-MHz even at 100Kohm - this makes it a fine substitute for trimmers in analog settings where signal is passing through the pot such as filters or op-amp circuits. For times when you have stereo signals you want to manage at the same time, there's also the MCP42U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/hcqj8nn2) which has dual separated pots inside. Both configurations come in both QFN and TSSOP packages, for easy pick-and-placing. We really like the ease and simplicity of these digital potentiometers with good documentation and just enough features to solve common engineering requirements. Whether you need the signal channel MCP41U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt3zwnq5) or dual MCP42U83 (https://www.digikey.com/short/hcqj8nn2), 5K or 100K, QFN or TSSOP. DigiKey has the full series in stock (https://www.digikey.com/short/wz13wpp5) right now for immediate shipment! Order today and you can start integrating these components into your next design by tomorrow afternoon.

399 Crash Survival: How Pilots Can Be Found Faster with Cyriel Kronenberg + GA News

Max talks with Cyriel Kronenberg, Vice President of Airports and Air Traffic Management at uAvionix and a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol's National Radar Analysis Team (NRAT), about one of aviation's most overlooked safety questions: if you survive a crash, how quickly will you be found? How Long Searches TakeCyriel explains that while ADS-B has shortened search times, the reality is sobering. Without a flight plan, overdue aircraft may not even be reported missing for hours. Average search times have historically stretched from 18 hours with a VFR flight plan to more than 60 hours with no plan at all. Even today, two to three hours is considered fast for locating a downed aircraft. ELTs: The Critical DifferenceCyriel stresses the enormous difference between old 121.5 MHz ELTs and modern 406 MHz beacons. The older units provide only a vague signal and are prone to false alarms, often ignored. A properly registered 406 beacon, by contrast, transmits GPS coordinates via satellite, dramatically reducing search times. But here's the catch: as many as half are mis-registered, with outdated or missing phone numbers. That makes even the best ELT nearly useless until rescuers conduct a blind search. Flight Plans, Contacts, and ADS-BFiling a flight plan helps, but only if searchers can reach someone who knows your intended route. Cyriel urges pilots to list an emergency contact not on the aircraft in the remarks section—ideally a spouse, friend, or FBO. While apps like ForeFlight allow pilots to enter contact details, those aren't passed to the FAA. ADS-B provides an even bigger safety net: an aircraft with ADS-B out can usually be pinpointed within yards, while non-equipped aircraft may take days to locate. Survival LessonsCyriel shares personal changes he's made after years of analyzing accidents. He always keeps his cell phone in his pocket so it won't be lost in a violent crash, carries a handheld transceiver tuned to 121.5 MHz, and wears or packs high-visibility gear. He emphasizes staying with the aircraft, since wreckage is easier to spot than a single person. Route planning also matters—flying near highways or populated areas at night increases survivability compared to wilderness routes. Behind the Scenes of NRATMax and Cyriel dive into how NRAT works with the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC). Using radar, ADS-B, and even cell-phone forensics, the team helps determine whether an incident is a false alarm, an accident with no survivors, or a mission where lives can be saved. They coordinate directly with controllers and search crews, sometimes correcting errors in coordinate formats that would otherwise send helicopters to the wrong location. Success Stories and ScaleIn 2024, AFRCC handled nearly 500 aviation missions, with over 200 lives saved. Civil Air Patrol was involved in more than 300 of those missions, while NRAT contributed to 71 cases—directly responsible for dozens of finds and 10 documented saves. Cyriel recalls a dramatic case in Montana where local ADS-B receivers installed by uAvionix employees helped locate a couple who survived a crash into icy water; thanks to quick coordination, a helicopter pulled them out within 20 minutes. Key Takeaways for PilotsCyriel closes with a checklist: Make sure your ELT is registered correctly. Consider adding a personal locator beacon. Use ADS-B out whenever possible. File a flight plan and put a reachable emergency contact in remarks. Carry your cell phone and handheld radio on your person. Stay with the aircraft if you go down. Max underscores the theme: nobody takes off expecting to crash, but hundreds of missions each year prove it happens. With preparation, you can improve your odds not just of surviving the impact, but of being found in time.
