This is the first in our series of short special episodes that we recorded at 2000 Trees Festival. For this one we are joined by Matt and Ken from The Bronx. The band were approaching the end of an epic European Twentieth anniversary tour which they told us all about. It was a pleasure to spend some time with these guys, and look out for a cameo from a member of Eagles Of Death Metal! Big thanks to Greg O'Grady for stepping in for Nick! Here's a quick chat with one of my favourite singers in one of my favourite bands - well, a few of my favourite bands if you include Mariachi El Bronx and the much underrated The Drips. I'm speaking of course about Matt Caughthran from The Bronx. We talk about the LA band's most recent record Bronx VI, what's next for Mariachi, and how can I get hold of one of those amazing promotional Bronx ouija boards that were knocking about around fifteen years ago. I had one. I think someone stole it. If you've got one and you wanna sell, I wanna talk. Step right up!Yeah, it's a cool episode this. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter. Oh hell yes, Matt from The Bronx/Mariachi El Bronx is hanging with me on the podcast today. We get into it by discussing his life growing up in Los Angeles, how important 90's punk was to him as he started to develop his own music tastes and the insane times that he experienced when The Bronx was in the middle of a major label bidding war at the start of the band. If you've ever had the pleasure of seeing a Bronx show, you can attest to the fact Matt Caughthran is a dynamic enigma all to his own. True to his own style, Matt took the concept of My Mixtape and turned it on it's head, instead of making a mixtape of songs he loves, he's chosen all the songs he hates, and joined Redbeard to explain why. "That's one of the benefits of playing music for a living I guess," voiced Matt Caughthran, vocalist for The Bronx about a seemingly endless parade of international touring. "We're still technically on the Bronx V tour, or coming to the tail end of it, but Australia has always been a great place to play. It's crazy to think but we really try to come over every year. This year it will be twice for us so we're some lucky dudes man, and we don't take it for granted. We're really excited to come back over and have a good time."In a revealing interview Matt talks about what The Bronx have in store for the tour, the real reason why they have refused to play on Saturday nights while here, his thoughts on the two Aussie support bands hitting the road with them - High Tension and Private Function, the importance of having a good time with music, exactly what Matt wanted to achieve when he started the band, their decision early on in their career to shun the big labels, the recording of their debut album in Gilby Clarke's kitchen plus heaps more. Matt Caughthran is the incomparable singer of L.A. punk rock band The Bronx and it's Latin flavored sister band, Mariachi El Bronx. Whether its tearing up basement punk clubs with Bronx or opening bigger arena shows with El Bronx - Matt and company have found a way to balance both reaching many people from a variety of backgrounds. We talk about striking that balance, as well as his early days growing up in East L.A., lineup changes, and some details about new the Bronx record due this fall! Ben Flanagan is the singer and bassist for Black Map. The bay area band has been busy since releasing their second album, "In Droves" last year. They've hit the road in the U.S. more than ever before touring with the likes of Chevelle and Bush. I chat with Ben about his days in early bands like The Actual and Trophy Fire, 90's comedy, Scott Weiland, signing with EOne Music, and future plans with Black Map.

Jake and Matt sit and discuss how to make it in a band when you have no discernable talent, feeling like a ghost in your own city, how to slow down time, and how "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit!"
