“It's very easy to say Gen Z's and millennials are demanding, they're needy, but if you really look at the core of what they want, they're basic human needs that we all want.”There's a generational divide in the work place that Madeline Miller wants to change. Madeline is a career coach who focuses specifically on Gen Z and millennial clients, who she says are entering the workforce with an entirely novel set of challenges.Madeline's clients are in their twenties, and grew up in the age of climate change, sweeping tech innovations, and being educated online during a global pandemic. That all amounts to a brand new kind of instability, so it's no wonder they need a unique type of guidance at work.In this episode, Madeline takes us through those shaky work stories - including her own, in her former life as a very successful but very unsatisfied entertainment lawyer (continuing with our over-representation of guests who were once dissatisfied lawyers…there's something to explore there!). She shares how she helps her clients find their footing, and explains why it's high time that employers respond to the needs of new generations of workers. Madeline Miller's BioI'm Madeline, founder of Coaching with Madeline. I strive to make executive coaching accessible for everyone—strengthening connections, cultivating empathy, and transforming leadership to create healthier, happier workplaces.Through my unique A.I.R. coaching formula, I've empowered hundreds of individuals worldwide to thrive in their careers. My program is grounded in strategies that work, drawing from my personal journey of transformation. I went from feeling stuck and unmotivated, bouncing from job to job, to becoming a Hollywood entertainment executive, then the production attorney for the James Bond franchise. In 2021, I started coaching Senior Executives in media, tech, and entertainment to become happier, more impactful leaders. Then, in 2024, I built my own coaching platform, Coaching with Madeline. It is designed to provide high-impact coaching in a relevant, future-building way—especially to Gen Z and Millennials, who often lack the career guidance and leadership development they deserve.  Connect with MadelineCoaching with Madeline - Website Madeline Miller - LinkedIn About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “We can look at fertility, we can look at cognition, memory, the nervous system, sleep, really there's not a single system of the body that yoga and meditation don't have have evidence to support for helping you function.” Ann Swanson has written the book on the science of yoga. Literally. After dealing with chronic pain and anxiety throughout her life, Ann tried yoga and meditation. Reluctant at first, once she started seeing real improvements, she went all in - and today, Ann's published two books that map out the hard evidence on the profound impacts these practices can have on our health and well-being. In her books Meditation for the Real World and Science of Yoga, Ann breaks down how these practices can improve nearly every aspect of our health, and how anyone can build them into their day - without a complete lifestyle overhaul. It's January, the time of year when everyone hits the ground running. We're setting goals, building new habits, and pushing to start the year off strong. But all that momentum can come with a price. Stress, burnout, and routines that just don't stick. If you're feeling the pressure, you're not alone. So, in this episode, Ann explains how yoga and meditation helped her overcome her significant health challenges, and how they can help you too. She has dedicated her career to helping people harness the power of mindfulness, movement and the mind-body connection in tiny, manageable steps. No need for incense, chanting, or intense, lengthy, cross-legged sessions. It's the New Year's episode you need. We've got 30-second yoga moves, one-minute meditations, and the small, sustainable habits that can make all the difference.About Ann SwansonAnn Swanson teaches meditation to busy people with busy minds. She is the author of the bestselling book SCIENCE OF YOGA, which has been translated into over 15 languages. Her new book, Meditation for the Real World, illuminates the fascinating science behind meditation with step-by-step practices to help you find peace in everyday life. However, Ann wasn't a naturally “chill person,” and meditation didn't come easy to her. Overcoming chronic pain and anxiety led her to India to study yoga, to China to explore tai chi, into the cadaver lab to teach anatomy, to night school to become a licensed massage therapist, and, ultimately, to earn a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy. Ann blends cutting-edge research with ancient wisdom, resulting in realistic techniques you won't just learn – you'll love to live by! Connect with AnnAnn Swanson website Science of Yoga (2nd addition available)Meditation for the Real World and the Meditation Challenge About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 100 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won silver in the 200 meter.  It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. From his early years in competitive swimming when he actually vomited from nerves before every race, to his philosophical views on winning and losing, Ryan takes us through a career that's been built on family and team support, and incredible focus and drive. He also discusses his passion project, opening his St. Johns. Florida location of Goldfish Swim School, and helping to share the joyful and lifesaving skill of swimming. You don't want to miss this great conversation as we get an Olympic icon's valuable wisdom  on performing under pressure, the power of a team, dealing with the unknowns, and yes, managing the expectations. About Ryan MurphyRyan Murphy began breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment, Ryan has fulfilled his academic and athletic dreams. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four straight years. He holds the American Record in multiple backstroke events. In his Olympic debut in Rio, Ryan won three golds medals, sweeping the backstroke events and helping the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m medley relay, where his backstroke lead-off set a world record. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming. In 2021, he shined in Tokyo winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. A native of Ponte Vedra Beach (Jacksonville), Fla., Murphy is passionate about giving every young child the opportunity to learn how to swim and being a role model for young swimmers.  Connect with Ryan & Goldfish Swim SchoolsRyan Murphy websiteRyan on Instagram @ryan_f_murphyGoldfish Swim School Instagram Goldfish Swim School website About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. At 33 years old, Tatiana Miller suddenly lost feeling and movement in her legs, and was lying in a hospital bed. “I had four orthopedic surgeons tell me, ‘this is going to be your new normal', and at that moment, I remember thinking, no, absolutely not. You're wrong”. When it comes to her health, accepting the status quo has never been in the cards for Tatiana. As a teen, she saw multiple doctors to find help for her autoimmune disease and chronic pain. For years, she struggled to find answers, studying holistic medicine and practicing yoga, but her body kept degenerating, until one day, a bad fall left her paralyzed. In this episode, Tatiana shares how her refusal to accept her doctor's prognosis and her journey to recovery inspired her to found RX for Life, a health consulting business that helps bridge the gap between Western healthcare and holistic medicine. At RX 4 Life, Tatiana helps her clients connect with what's happening in their bodies, the ways that things like mental health and lifestyle could effect that, and how holistic medicine might help. It's a fascinating discussion where we dive into how we approach healthcare and why it's critical that we rethink it.About Tatiana MillerTatiana Miller started RX 4 Life over a decade ago. Drawing from her experiences with Western healthcare, and her experience in psychology and holistic practices, her services aim to support individuals, especially those with high-stress jobs, those dealing with burnout and anxiety, and those living with chronic illnesses. The day has finally come! Friends…our book is officially launched! Join us on today's episode as we celebrate the book, vacillate from excitement to nausea, and look back on the incredible guests on The Breakout who inspired it all.One of our amazing guests once said, “all these rules that have been taught to us? They were not bargained for collectively. We did not actually agree to them”.  She was actually talking about monogamy, but for us, that sentiment applies universally to every expectation we live by. It's also a sentiment that serves as the starting point for our book, Whatever the Hell You Want. It's a book about the unspoken expectations, the “I shoulds” that we live by, and the secret dreams we've tried to ignore.  But it's also a guide for seeing those stifling boxes for what they are, pushing back on expectations, making changes and embracing the life you (yes, you) really want. We know a thing or two about transformations and we know they're not easy. So we wanted to write a practical guide to help people make the changes they are aching to make. Episode Summary: Swimming  has always been something that the black culture can do. Trust me, I've been to the Olympics. Team Nigeria, Team South Africa. It's a problem in the U.S. And it starts with the culture. We have to stop saying we don't swim. Yes. We. Do.  Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Cullen Jones' journey into the sport started with a near drowning when he was five-years old. The experience left him terrified of deep water – as soon as he couldn't touch the floor he would panic. But his mother was adamant that her son learn how to swim and with incredible determination and against a lot of odds, Cullen  became one of the fastest in the world. In this episode, Cullen takes us through his journey from being a kid scared to jump into the pool to facing racism at swim meets and going on to break a world record in swimming.  He tells us about Brad the instructor who taught him to love swimming and about the time Serena Williams gave him a shout of encouragement before a big race. Cullen also gets candid about the barriers he faced as an African American swimmer, what he is doing now to change the swimming narrative in the Black community, and his mission to ensure underserved communities learn the life-saving skill of swimming. About Cullen Jones:Cullen Jones is a four time Olympic medalist and the first African American to break a world record in swimming. As a member of Team USA, he made history by helping break world records and winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in what many say was the most exciting race in Olympic History. Off the pool deck, he is a passionate advocate for water safety. Cullen serves as an ambassador and board member of the USA Swimming Foundation and works with GoldFish Swim School to help make swimming lessons more accessible to underserved communities.Connect with Cullen: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cullenjones41/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cullenjones/?hl=en Team USA: https://www.teamusa.com/profiles/cullen-jonesAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Max's personal journey, having witnessed his mother's battle with Lewy body dementia, has fueled his passion for educating others about the power of nutrition and healthy habits. He dives deep into the science behind key nutrients like astaxanthin, magnesium, and collagen, and busts myths surrounding popular diet trends like intermittent fasting. “Anger is telling us something. It's often telling us that something isn't right or that a boundary is being violated”. Cara Tuttle is a lawyer, consultant, and educator focused on addressing sexual assault and harassment in higher education, and she wants us to explore our anger as a key tool in assertiveness training.  After years of working on a university campus, Cara found that assertiveness was a major struggle for women of all ages, and that has a lot to do with how women have been raised, and how complicated anger can be for women in particular. As Cara explains, “a lot of the women [I work with] have been raised to be well behaved. They've been raised to be pleasant, which delays them in asserting their boundaries.”In this episode, Cara talks about her important book Drowning In Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living, that she wrote to address the questions she heard from women over and over about how to speak up for themselves. Plus, we do a deep dive into anger, assertiveness and boundaries, to explore why anger is a good thing and why it's so complicated for women; the small things you can do to create big change; and we even talk about the life-changing power of quality sexual education. About Cara TuttleCara Tuttle is a speaker, author, consultant, and activist-minded educator with over twenty years' experience working in higher education.  Cara is the author of Drowning in Timidity: Women, Politeness, and the Power of Assertive Living and has contributed chapters to various books and publications, including The Future Female Leader: Preparing Girls and Women to Lead the World, The Female Code: A Woman's Book for Empowerment and Confidence, The Professional Woman: Pivoting to the New Normal, and Raising Daughters:Raising Healthy Children in an Unhealthy World.Connect with CaraFacebook  https://www.facebook.com/102113045263870Linked In  https://www.linkedin.com/in/caratuttlebellInstagram https://www.instagram.com/carajtuttle Threads https://www.threads.net/@carajtuttle Website:  https://caratuttlebell.comwww.drowningintimidity.comDrowning in Timidity on AmazonAbout The ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Over that time, running her own landscaping business she began to see a crucial need amongst her fellow creatives and trade-based entrepreneurs: they had started a business because they loved their work, and then suddenly they became managers and stopped actually doing that work that they loved. So she developed a fascinating coaching method that focuses on the unique struggles of trade-based entrepreneurs.“Nature is a system”, Monique tells us. “It's the living and non-living things in connection with each other, with the overlay of energy and human interaction. This isn't all that much different than how businesses are formed”. “There's this really old, really crap story that how we got here is about what the guys did. And women were just like some side character behind a hill, just like pounding some tubers, saying, ‘Oh, sorry guys. I see you're busy. I'm just gonna build the future of our species in my actual body'.” That's how the brilliant and hilarious Cat Bohannon introduces the idea behind her New York Times bestselling book, Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution. Ten years in the making, and making a huge splash internationally, the book is a fascinating, myth-busting tour of biological evolution that re-examines everything we think we know about the human body by placing women at the center of it all. In honor of International Women's Day on March 8th, we're thrilled to talk with Cat about her boundary-breaking book, which puts the female body in the foreground of biological research. “ It's not that there's a sexist cabal saying, ha ha! We're gonna understudy females”, she tells us, “It's that there's this pre-existing idea that ovaries don't matter”. Cat shares how there's a long history of female bodies being excluded from medical, evolutionary and biological research, and why that matters for everyone. The interview also dives into Cat's sci-fi movie inspiration for the book, how female figures in evolution were key to the humans of today, why the “male norm” in biological research developed in the first place, and how change in the scientific community is happening…slowly: “paradigm shifts are hard…that's the hardest thing to break out of. A paradigm shift is the biggest thing there is”. Don't miss this eye-opening discussion that looks at the human body from a whole different vantage point. About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Get ready for a Valentine's Day episode like no other. True to form, we're challenging some expectations, and today, it's that age-old ideal of “the couple”.  Why is it still so glorified, and what are some ways to do relationships differently? Psychologist and sex educator Dr. Joli Hamilton is one expert who wants to shake up the monogamy paradigm. In her practice, Joli helps people explore non-monogamy and the many ways it can be implemented in a relationship. Joli specializes in helping couples develop their own self-awareness, and navigate the bumpy road of non-monogamy – a choice that for lots of people can be overwhelming. But, she says it doesn't have to be, “a lot of times we accidentally shame people for not following the script – for not just sticking with monogamy. If we actually had these conversations, we would have a different way of approaching this and it might not be so scary”.Joli also happens to be in a consensually non-monogamous relationship herself. But when she first began living non-monogamously, she made a lot of mistakes. She developed her own coaching and therapy practice to help couples avoid the difficulties she had. On this episode, Joli shares that messy monogamy breakout story, and gives us the 101 on non-monogamy, polyamory, and all the relationship concepts we need to know. She also explains how she takes couples through “the year of opening”: a year long process to help them navigate their open relationships in healthy and empowering ways.About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “I never felt I was Bengali enough. I never felt I was Italian enough…And because of that, I struggled to find my cultural identity”. Urmi Hossain is Italian by birth, and Bengali by blood, but there's always been friction between those two identities. Born and raised in Italy to immigrant parents from Bangladesh, Urmi grew up at the center of a clash between Italian culture, strict Muslim parenting, and a society that wanted to categorize her one way or another. You know that tendency we all sometimes have where we want to define someone's cultural identity with one convenient, hyphenated label? Well, it's not always that simple. And on this episode, Urmi explains why it can also be a real problem. She tells us about her ongoing journey of breaking out of a single cultural box and how her writing and mentoring helps others do the same. Urmi talks about the push and pull of being raised in a country where cultural diversity is not the norm, and how it took her many years and a move to a new country to find her confidence, leadership skills, and self-awareness. In her book Discovering Your Identity: A rebirth from interracial struggle, Urmi explores the delicate balance of cultural self-discovery and her journey toward owning her own identity. Now she mentors young women of all cultures, in business and finance, helping them push their careers forward and embrace their power.About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “Four years after I left – four long years of being stalked and having my tires slashed – my former husband took the kids one day and disappeared out of country.” That's the beginning of Lizbeth Meredith's years-long nightmare of searching for her two young daughters after her abusive ex-husband kidnapped them and took them to Greece. Living on just $10 an hour at the time, Lizbeth embarks on a $100,000 journey working with a private detective, fighting through a foreign court system, getting arrested, and taking terrifying risks to bring her children home. But this is a story that really begins with Lizbeth's own difficult childhood. In this episode, Lizbeth shares the long road from her own early trauma to surviving domestic abuse, to rescuing her girls and growing a foundation of confidence and self-worth. She now works as a writer, true crime interviewer, probation worker, and child abuse investigator, and uses her voice and her experiences to advocate for victims everywhere.Lizbeth talks honestly about being “a good victim”, staying quiet in hopes that things would get better, and how her childhood contributed to decades of not believing in herself. She wrote about the whole harrowing journey of defying the odds and the expectations in her memoir, Pieces of Me, and in 2022, that book was made into a Lifetime movie, called Stolen by Their Father. In 2023, Lizbeth published her second book, Grounded In Grit, that she describes as “personal development for women weighed down by crises or abuse, finally ready to become their own best advocate”.You don't want to miss this amazing story of transformation and survival.About the ShowThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Episode 6 – 499: Box Series – Little Boxes Not All The Same Let's talk about one size not fitting all. There is a song that talks about little boxes on the hillside that all look just the same, and it speaks to the lack of variance in experiences, expectation, and outcome. The reality is that no matter how similar our experiences may seem, they are not identical and one size, one solution, one approach will not fit all.  I heard a quote recently that said when we try to be all things to everyone, we accomplish being nothing for anyone. So, as we end this year and have the blessing to begin a new year, I want us all to keep in mind that boxes come in different shapes and sizes, and they contain contents in different variety.  Variety can be a beneficial thing, especially if we use variety as a way to compliment, complete, build, create new opportunities, and realize new progress. It may seem a bit cliché to wish you prosperity in the new year, but I do hope for each of you the unique things that allow you to think, learn, grow, and live in your unique fullness. “I lived in Southern California, born and raised my whole life. And I was bullied for being different”. That's how Dr. Zabina Bhasin, better known as “Dr. Zee”, experienced her childhood as a South Asian American growing up in California. Today she is a child psychiatrist who is deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of children. Her work is about building self-confidence and self-awareness in kids, and she's been committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in the healthcare space since her career began. So when her own child came to her upset and confused about how she was treated as a South Asian American, she realized history was repeating itself, “It hit me: Oh my God! This is the exact same thing I went through”. The same ignorance Dr. Zee experienced as a kid was still happening today. Frustrated, dismayed, and sad all at once, Dr. Zee knew the only way to change things is through education. And that's when her life took an unexpected turn. She left her thriving career as a doctor to start InKidz, an educational toy company that aims to build belonging, self-worth, and acceptance from an early age. On this episode, we're digging into two breakouts: Dr. Zee's courageous decision to leave one passion to pursue another, and how she dealt with the friction she experienced in moving from a respected profession to create products that challenge the status quo. Dr. Zee's second breakout is about her work in stopping the cycle of ignorance and building more acceptance in the world. But when her marriage ended after 28 years, for the first time, Stacie was thrown. On this episode, Stacie takes us through her post-divorce reinvention and how it inspired her to found Modern Consciousness, a coaching company that offers personal growth programs to help people cut through the noise so they can live the life they want.  After intensive healing work, meditation, and study, Stacie found her self-confidence again, and developed her step-by-step Elevate Your Life program. Víctor Jara sang the reality of his people; their past, present and dreams for a better future. His music was deeply political but also deeply human. Today we will be taking a closer look at his 1971 "El Derecho de Vivir en Paz" album and talk a bit about its meaning. As we head into September, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. backed military coup that would oust Allende from presidency and take the lives of thousands, including Víctor Jara (a show is coming about that next week). So, it is essential we take this time to commemorate, remember and evoke for justice. Songs: (all written by Jara unless otherwise stated) El Derecho de Vivir en Paz (with Los Blops) Abre La Ventana La Partida (instrumental) El Niño Yuntero - comp. Miguel Hernandez Vamos Por Ancho Camino A La Molina No Voy Mas A Cuba Las Casitas de Barrio Alto El Alma Llena de Banderas (originally Little Boxes, comp. Although Lee Mynett had music in her bones and heart from a tender age, she didn't start writing songs till the age of 50, sort of like what happened with Melvina Reynolds of Little Boxes fame. Lee has a passion for music and story-telling, and has played music as Magdaleena's Muse, Gypsy Maggie, and as Lee Mynett and the Root Tappers, and after decades in the South, she has returned to her native habitat of Eau Claire, WI.
